Old May versus new May

Is it just me, or am I the only one who has always hated the design of the original RSE May, but absolutely love the new ORAS design? I don't know, I'd love to hear opinions.

Sopheria November 6th, 2014 4:16 PM

She has a new design? I didn't even notice a difference. She looks the same to me :P

Nah November 6th, 2014 4:22 PM

I kinda like them both.

It is a small difference, but there is one. Side by side picture comparison:

Ohhh yea, I see it now. To that extent, I like the new one ever so slightly better :)

Hikamaru November 6th, 2014 4:59 PM

I think they're both cool, but her new design wins by a mile for me. Just gotta love how much cuter they've made her now, especially with that bow.

Degeezee November 6th, 2014 5:16 PM

It isn't that I didn't like her old design, but looking at it now the new one's so much cuter than the original. I like her a lot better without the gloves, and with the trendier bandana. I'm so excited to play through the game as her~

PumpJack November 6th, 2014 5:23 PM

The art style is better with the new one, but design-wise, I much prefer her old one. The front-tie bandana and the added frills kinda detract from her sporty look- and of course the redundant shorts-over-shorts thing. I also personally thought the gloves looked cool.

\/ November 6th, 2014 5:27 PM

I like the old May and new Brendan, I think they're more stylish and attractive.

Candy November 6th, 2014 5:35 PM

Am I the only one who prefers Sugimori's old art style? At least, when it comes to her face. Dang, no matter how good she looks in the Demo, she still looks awkward in the official art.

Anyway, design wise... I'm more with the minority and say old May looks better. Sure, New May looks cute and all, but I disapprove of the ribbon. Plus, they removed the gloves. >:

That totally makes sense, I'm not so much of a sporty person myself but I get what you're saying about the added ruffles and more cutesy style they've given her this time around. She's definitely less sporty than before. I honestly like the shorts over shorts more than under a skirt (is that a skirt? i've never really been sure?), though I'm not sure why...

Hiatus November 6th, 2014 6:15 PM

Her old design seems to have more of a better connection to me, in a way, since it was used in anime and whatnot. Back when Advanced series was still around, May used to be one of my favorite characters, and being able to play as her in-game exactly sort of added to the touch, if you know what I mean.

Though, I'm definitely fond of her new outfit; definitely an improvement over old. If you ask me, it's very modern and stylish. Hoenn is a tropical region, and is meant to be hot in most of its towns, routes, and cities; wearing light clothing like she's doing in ORAS does make sense, in a way. Only thing I dislike, though, is lack of gloves. In her older design, she had them, and they were actually pretty cool-looking!

Odyssey November 6th, 2014 6:24 PM

I like both designs, but much prefer May's new design. Since Hoenn is a tropical region, it would make sense if characters worn something light. Plus, I love the cute ribbon on new May's head. x) It's a shame that they removed the gloves, but it's nothing worth grieving over. :P

Teravolt November 6th, 2014 6:43 PM

New May FTW!!!

J a s m i n e © November 6th, 2014 6:48 PM

I LOVE new May's design. Tbh, I always hated the bandana but the new bandana is so cute!

Actually- the ribbon is another point of her new design that I'm none too fond of.

Whenever I see a front-tie knot like that- I just think of this:

Unless you've of a Bohemian lifestyle or doing housework- it just seems out of place.

Espeon Master November 6th, 2014 7:06 PM

Old May- gotta show love for that collared shirt (and those gloves). The only thing I really like about New May is the shorts. I really wish they didn't add those frills. Still, I have so much love for May in general, and can't wait to play as her.

The Gogoat November 6th, 2014 7:38 PM

Old May, for sure. Not that the new design is bad, I like it too, but the old is just better. Of course, it's just my opinion.

Jigglymilk November 6th, 2014 8:43 PM

They're pretty equal, but I definitely prefer new May's outfit, so my vote goes to her. I kinda wish they would've given her a new hair color like they did for Crystal though ~_~

ShivaDF November 6th, 2014 8:56 PM

I love all the new designs so far! May was always my favorite of the PCs, so I'm glad she got such a nice re-design. In my opinion, the artists didn't really even do much, they just made it bolder and more flashy, and updated it to the new art style.

To be honest, I always thought the RSE old character art looked lifeless and awful, like the artists were having a bad day or something. Especially the villains.

εcho. November 6th, 2014 11:16 PM

I never really cared for May's original design, her hair has always bothered me, but I've gotta say, I far prefer it over her new look.

The front tie bow just looks silly imo.

CJoE November 6th, 2014 11:53 PM

I much more prefer the new May. Look more cheerful to me with the ribbon on top of her head rather than a bandanna. She also look more girly without those gloves.

Juxapose November 7th, 2014 4:47 AM

As I thought for a while, this is what I came up with:

Old may looks very tomboyish, while new May looks more feminine. I usually play male characters, and this new may looks like something I would love to rival and impress. I feel the same way with Serena from X and Y, or Rosa from B2/W2.

Another thing that sways my opinion is the gameplay graphics. May looked kinda dumb in RSE. The remakes have more lifelike animation which makes her shine more as a character than a lifeless sprite.

For some reason, I really love the front tie bandanna and no gloves.

Last thing is that in the anime, Misty was always a character that I loved. When May replaced her, I was kinda harsh on May's character for replacing Misty. So I always hated her character for that reason. This new May has no connection to Misty or the anime series in general, so I can appreciate her more as a character as opposed to a replacement.

I had the same feelings about "new Crys" vs old Crys but the new version there finally won me over since the outfit is sort of unique and the old one was pretty bad. But with May, I just think they... went in the wrong direction.

I like my Sapphire :(

Wow. I didn't realise how similar the artwork was between the both, even right down to the pose!

But yeah I slightly prefer the newer design, obviously has a fresher look overall.

SkorXX November 7th, 2014 6:56 AM

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE NEW DESIGN!! But still, I wish there was a Sapphire Version of her design!

Altius November 7th, 2014 6:58 AM

I'm torn. I love the bow, but she'd look more professional with gloves.

Pinkie-Dawn November 7th, 2014 9:41 AM

Seeing that Hoenn is a tropical region, I would have to pick the new design because it makes the most sense. Plus it looks overall cuter than the old outfit.

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire November 7th, 2014 4:13 PM

I like better her old design as it's more iconic to me.

Legobricks November 7th, 2014 4:30 PM

Well, setting aside my bias toward Sugimori's older art style for its nostalgic look, the strangest thing about the original May (apart from her absurd hip-waist ratio, though every female protagonist shares that) was always how straightly her hair jutted out. The new May is far more proportional especially in that regard, and so as there's nothing peculiar about her appearance, I'd say I prefer the new one. Her shorts are also less confusing, which is nice.

What's tropical about Hōen? It certainly appears to be a warm region for the most part, but I don't remember observing much in the way of tropically-themed fauna and flora. Actually, out of all generations, there's more of that kind of thing in the first one, between Exeggutor, Vileplume, and Victreebel, in addition to the region visited by Mew's discoverers. Its location-sake Kyūshū is at most sub-tropical.

jacktheking November 7th, 2014 6:06 PM

I prefer the older version. The older version is what we used to see.. and we grow up seeing may like this. Oh well.. am I..

Old May, but Emerald May is much better.

theonirvana November 8th, 2014 8:19 AM

i prefer the new version.

janejane6178 November 8th, 2014 10:28 AM

i also prefer the new version.. especially her hair bow :)

Nakasu November 8th, 2014 11:21 AM

I'd go with ORAS May all the way. It looks 3x better than the original May. Actually I never knew what all the fuss was about with the R/S/E May, i'd consider this one to be the definitive version.

Altairis November 8th, 2014 2:37 PM

I don't really have that much of a preference, but new May's bow looks pretty cute in my opinion so I'll vote for her!

Itcheeee November 8th, 2014 5:05 PM

The original May is my favorite female protaganist, so I've grown quite used to that design. Both the RS and Emerald outfits were sporty, had a cycling/running theme and seemed quite tomboy like to me. I was excited to see her remake outfit be something simular atleast. Her bandana was just iconic, it's like Ash's cap. He may have different ones, but they are all the same kind of thing. Not bandana, to ribbon.

Plus, Pokespe's Sapphire is a pretty big tomboy. I really can't see her wearing this. The RS/E outfits fit her so well too.
And two pairs of shorts doesn't really seem logical. lol :S
But, atleast it's still the same May. Not like Kris to Lyra (again, tomboy to cutesy though)
Hope we can change the clothing to something simular to the RS/E outfits. :)

Well I heard the Hoenn Pokémon were suppose to have a more tropical design compared to the basic designs from the first two gens, so I assumed that Hoenn is a tropical region, which is why I thought May's new design made more sense than her old design.

Gigadweeb November 8th, 2014 8:47 PM

Old one by far. More used to the tomboyish design due to the manga.

Now she just looks like a generic cute loli to me.

LyokoGirl5000 November 9th, 2014 12:14 AM

I hate her new design. I just can't connect with girly-girl protagonists and I want to be able to connect with my player character. Give her the hat back, take away the frills, put her shirt a little higher up because she's what, ten or twelve, and I might like her. Maybe I'm just old fashioned on the shirt part, but I hate it when preteen characters wear low cut, form fitting or really revealing outfits. I know the undershirt is there, but May's new shirt is still a little too revealing to me.

classiccartoonsftw November 9th, 2014 1:01 AM

I've always loved the old May. She was very cute and adventurous. The new May looks too much like a prostitute, in my opinion. Such a downgrade, if you ask me.

Apollo November 9th, 2014 1:40 AM

Older May wins for me. I'm a fan of both designs, but the older version is more iconic and gives a tougher, tomboyish vibe to May which I'm a big fan of. New design is cute and all, but it just doesn't seem right for May imo. I guess it was kinda inevitable since as the generations progress the female character designs have grown from a tomboyish, sporty vibe to a more cutesy kind.

epicbiscuit23 November 9th, 2014 5:09 AM

Both are good.

Alfieri November 9th, 2014 11:49 AM

I prefer old May's design. Her outfit looks cooler. New May and new Brendan look more tropical which makes more sense but I just think their old outfits were cooler overall.

However it isn't to say that I dislike Ken Sugimori's new art style. The new trainer class art looks great. Especially the Battle Girl.

you do know her age right? You pervert! -_-

CalzoneCannon November 9th, 2014 2:40 PM

I'm gonna say that I love the old design so much better. Sure, the new design is fantastic, but it is no where near as good as the old one. The big reason May was my favourite Poke-girl in the first place was because of her Tom-boyish look, the sporty look. I liked her old bandana and gloves, now those are gone and she wears a girly bow. Plus, they made her really frilly which just kills the sporty look.
They are both great designs on their own, but the old design fits the May that I came to know and love, the new one just takes away from that.

Sabrewulf238 November 9th, 2014 4:37 PM

I prefer her older design. She looks more adventure ready.

The newer design doesn't look like somebody who'd be trekking through all kinds of terrain. Granted Serena is pretty much in the same boat design wise.

Bellsprout November 9th, 2014 5:13 PM

I always liked the original May. She was so badass looking with that bandanna and the gloves. The new May is still alright with me, but now she looks so cutesy and just idk not as cool. Makes me sad :(

Preach.

XtinaIsMeLuvinWWE November 9th, 2014 5:59 PM

Although the new one's grown on me a lot, and I do like her top and the white shorts, I honestly prefer the original May due to design (I prefer her bandana, hair, face, gloves and I just think her whole outfit works really well together) as well as nostalgia; she was the first female character I ever got to play as my actual gender so her design's just a lot more familiar and "May-like" to me :)

TheGinger63 November 10th, 2014 10:01 AM

I admit i was disappointed in the new Mays design originally. It has kinda grown on me. But honestly i was hoping for the blue variation of Sapphires outfit. And i was bummed they didnt include AT LEAST a customization for that one. Oh wellllllll. Overall new May is growing on me

KostK2Boss November 11th, 2014 7:58 AM

I like the new design, except for that weird bow. Don't get me wrong, it makes her look adorable, but for me May without the bandana just doesn't look like May at all. So, as a standalone design ORAS May looks better, but best May is still R/S May to me.

Thursday November 12th, 2014 12:49 PM

WHAT ABOUT EMERALD MAY?!

I wish they would have stuck with the sporty look since this may looks kind of.... fragile? Like, it seems like she's about to go to a nice place, not go into the wilderness to capture little creatures that could probably beat her up. I wish they would at least kept her gloves.

precita November 13th, 2014 4:24 PM

Design wise I'm fine with either, but I like the ponytail the new ORAS design has and I wish the original had that too.

Still the original May is too classic, being one of the most memorable and popular characters in the anime for years. Although I guess for people who don't watch the anime that wouldn't matter.

Evening November 18th, 2014 4:38 AM

I prefer the ORAS design, mainly because I'm not fond of sporty looks.

SapphireMillennium November 18th, 2014 12:24 PM

I voted "both".

I always loved May because of how professional looking and cute her design was (for both R/S and E).

I like the girly flair they've given her new design. I don't really like any of her designs better than the others. They're all great.

Though that may change once I actually get the game. xD

Pendraflare November 18th, 2014 2:52 PM

In thinking about it, I like May's new look considerably more than in RS. But I prefer her Emerald design to either one, personally. That pose in her Sugimori art has her looking more lively than either of the RS designs of hers.

Satoshi Ookami November 19th, 2014 7:27 AM

New one is voiced by HanaKana, I can't not vote for her =D

In terms of looks, they are equal for me, both are really cute =D

Saronai November 22nd, 2014 3:44 PM

Put me in for the old May as well. Also, I didn't realize they looked different by version (having only played Emerald--which was the first pokemon game I played). Do they still look different by version? Or do they all look the same now?

Also, ugh. I have a soft spot for tomboyish characters. They got rid of everything about May that gave her a tomboyish vibe (visually speaking) and gave her cutesy ruffles and a big frickin bow. Bleh. Not to mention far less muscle into a little twig.

*sigh*

"HoneyClaws" November 22nd, 2014 5:32 PM

I dont like May's new design. It's just so generic now. I just cant connect to this version anymore. I don't see May in it other than the hairstyle.

Shes the daughter of a field-researcher & enviromentalist. I think she of all the characters should have kept that active, sports wear design or at least had a wetsuit thing like what Brendan has. That giant bow on her head now and the context ball-dress with that side-tuff pony-tail is just too babyish looking. I feel embarassed playing as a character like that. It just too girly, rather than the more seamless, gender-neutral feeling the old one had.

I like cool looking go-getter tomboy May, not the moe-doll New May. I'm sorry.

Lugia16 November 22nd, 2014 8:46 PM

New may looks younger than old may.

MarinoKadame November 22nd, 2014 9:19 PM

The new art style is different, that's why May seems to be younger. I prefer the new May over the old.

Sun November 23rd, 2014 7:21 AM

I'm in for May's RS and Emerald outfit. I truly appreciate how tomboyish she was, in which sets her different from the rest of the other female protagonists -- this tomboyish trait of hers was even brought and emphasized in the well received manga 'Pokémon Special'. The new outfit's designs are actually not bad, but it just doesn't suit May. Probably Lyra can even wear it better.

Vegeta™ November 23rd, 2014 7:42 AM

Is Pokemon Alpha Sapphire for girls?

~Platina's Jason~ November 23rd, 2014 8:26 AM

I like both though Old slightly more. I think combining the two designs would be awesome though. Give the new design the gloves and collar and remove the frills while giving her back her skirt and it'd be great. The bandanna can go either way since I like both her old and new ones.

This!

Between R/S May and OR/AS May, I prefer the latter. I do really like her new design, especially when compared to the original, but I prefer Emerald's May design overall. I agree with Josh completely, and although I definitely do like OR/AS May I do prefer the sporty, "stronger" look of Emerald May.

Iceshadow3317 November 23rd, 2014 11:43 AM

I liked Emerald and original may better. I just liked the sporty look much better. But I think this is mainly because of the bow instead of the bandanna.

Clairissa November 23rd, 2014 11:47 AM

RSE's female protagonist did look a lot better to me personally.
Though that could be avoided if we had trainer customization... C'mon Gamefreak, let's keep new features in, not removing them in the next game.

LividZephyr November 23rd, 2014 1:13 PM

I greatly prefer Emerald May and the original is good too. New May? Ehh, not so much. I am not a fan of bow-tied bandannas like that and I don't find them cute in the slightest. The ring around her head with her hair being so weird is just... hideous.

I love a sporty look and Emerald May had that. I too wish there had been customization here, though, and am very disappointed it's gone. Why can't the customization options be reflective of the region they're in?

Megan November 23rd, 2014 1:32 PM

When I saw her design for the first time I was like "She is pretty ugly". Tbh she's almost your generic stereotypical anime girl, with an exception in her not having huge breasts.

May's old design was more raw and unpolished which gave her some kind of personality. Which is why I like her old design more.

But hey, at least she's not wearing a hat. That's a huge thing considering it's GF. {XD}

Enuff November 23rd, 2014 8:28 PM

What it is for me is the sprites are no longer short and stout you can actually see differences in weight and height of people.

I forgot about Emerald. Those designs made them look like they were in the Ace-Trainer class, characters I would expect to beat the Elite 4 and Battle Frontier with pride. Especially May.

Her new outfit now, and personality just reminds me of a Shaunna or Bianca downgrade, where they're rookie trainers all throughout the game and just want to be friends with all the cute pokemon.... which May never seemed to be. Now shes just another face among the Mei/Rosa clones.

I kinda like how she's now wearing a bow (her old design didn't really have a hat either, but a bandanna) which kinda sets her apart from most protagonists who tend to wear stereotypical hats. Hats get kinda boring after a while, it's nice to see change of pace from time to time.

I don't why people claim the OR/AS May is "too girly". There may be some frills on her top but it mixes the tomboyish style of her old outfit with some cute aspects as well. Essentially a fresh take on an iconic design.

She looks more childish because of her face. Look at Emerald May, then at ORAS may. If you photoshopped the old May's face over the new May's body she wouldn't look as cute as she does.

Again it's just a different art style that was used. Also the old May was more chubby and shorter if you compared their arts.

Definitely prefer the new May. For one, I feel like in the storyline she has a little more character than in the original. I also think the remix of the rival battle theme is one of the best pieces in the game. Like, I really feel like I'm battling my rival when the music plays and she gets her Pokeball ready. Plus, her updated team is nice.

Its her design that people have a problem with, not her team or characterization. Those apart from appearance were handled just fine. I mean even in the game her personality was changed as well into a complete parallel to the anime's Tundere may. But even that I could somewhat overlook, if not barely. Her appearance is what is whats presented more directly upfront. She just seems too forgettable in every other area drowned out by the kawaii cliches that rebooted on her.
To me there should be more variety to female trainers than just girly-girl cuteness.

As long as when the anime goes back to Hoenn they don't recast that throaty sexy voice actress they had in the Mirage Pokemon special. What they heck was that actress thinking? She's playing a 12 year old GIRL not Jessica Rabbit! yeesh!

I must admit that I'm actually quite fond of both of the character designs. May has always been my favourite of the female cast.

I however am unable to hide my disappointment I feel that I must type out my sorrow, for they did implement the clothing feature in this remake of the game. Which is unfortunately understandable given that the main character of the previous version of this game was unable to do so, and that would save on development time.

Don't know why, but I really don't like her new look. Her old one was "meh". I liked her Emerald one the most.

Moonlight Shadow November 26th, 2014 3:47 PM

Hmm I gotta to say that I much prefer the original R/S and Emerald May over the new one.
I really liked the sporty look and that bandanna was so cool.I don't mind the new May at all just don't really like the frills and the front bow, everything else is fine.

Spinosaurus November 26th, 2014 3:49 PM

My dislike of Sugimori's current art style brings the new May down significantly.

Plus she comes across as overly cute in this. No thanks.

Emerald May was the GOAT let's be real

Look at that smug face.

I don't get the love for Emerald May. Of the original two designs (that is RS and E) I think RS May looks far better than Emerald May.

Maybe its the colour scheme?

Though I do prefer her sleeveless look and the more black on her. Emerald may looks edgier.

i prefer the old one. new one is too skinny.

Probably. I like the outfit it's just the orange and green I'm not a fan of.

If someone has the skill like those artists at Pixiv/ I'd like to see a hypathetical costume fusion.

ShadowEdge November 28th, 2014 10:06 AM

I like the new one a bit more so much cuter IMO. Though the old one looks more a bit formidable as a trivial.

pokemontrainer_samuel November 28th, 2014 5:05 PM

I kinda like both, the old May was the cool sporty May while the new May looks cute (although the way she wears her bandana on her head makes her look like some housewife or something).

That said, I'm kinda disappointed that after 11 years of thinking I had a special place in May's heart, she tells me I'm her best friend :-O

Dedenne1 November 29th, 2014 11:58 AM

I like both but new may is much more loveable and actually looks a lot better id like to see her in the traditional emerald garb in green also but in red and blue she looks great! I mean why wouldnt you like the new may she has eyes too not black dots lol

Altairis November 29th, 2014 12:55 PM

Playing the game has really made me like new May's design. Her in-game model is really cute, you can't deny, and honestly now I prefer the bow to the bandana. It's a lot cuter and the bandana might not look as nice in 3D.

Sheep December 3rd, 2014 2:36 PM

Voted new version and evened out the old/new poll. 8D Though I probably should've voted both because I like both of them. May was cute originally but the bow this time around adds a lot of charm to her and she looks even more adorable, though also very young.

Nakala Pri December 4th, 2014 2:35 AM

Even though the new one is gorgeous, with a more stylish approach and that adorable bow... I'm not sure. I loved May's old bandana. Like, to the point of infatuation. @[email protected]

I guess I love them both, equally. I reckon more modern art of the original would bring out the charm, then I could probably compare her to the new one and make a firm decision. It's a bit tough when their art style are so different.

I kinda like it how in the original, she had slightly large thighs with strong calves, not stick legs.
