Destiny 's style has been described as a first-person shooter that incorporates role-playing and massively multiplayer online game (MMO) elements, but Bungie has avoided defining Destiny as a traditional MMO game. Instead, the game has been referred to as a "shared-world shooter," as it lacks many of the characteristics of a traditional MMO game. For instance, rather than players being able to see and interact with all other players in the game or on a particular server—as is the case in many conventional MMO games—Destiny includes on-the-fly matchmaking that allows players to see and interact only with other players with whom they are "matched" by the game. Events may happen in-game that are not necessarily controlled or planned by the developer, which will help to create a dynamic developing experience for Bungie and a dynamic playing experience for gamers."

Who owns Destiny? What are your thoughts on it so far? Do you plan on getting it if you don't own it? How do you think of the game as a follow-up to Bungie's hit franchise of Halo? Feel free to discuss all things Destiny-related in this thread.

It seems like it's okay, but I personally have no interest in it. It feels like it's just trying to be what Halo was and it can't live up to that. I could be wrong though, since I've never played it. Just hear it has a weak story. So idk. I won't ever get it, that's fur shur.

It's like Halo-meets-Borderlands in a way. The story is a little meh; not as enticing as the Halo one that's for sure. Is story a major selling point for you?

In some games. If it's a game where the story is important, i.e. Halo, Mass Effect, Fallout), then a weak story hurts my desire to purchase. But if it's a series I already love, like the three above, then I might let it slide. I'm not willing to give a new game any chance if the story is weak or of no interest to me. I loved Bioshock the instant I saw a teaser trailer for it and it hooked me instantly, so it really depends.

Some games though, like Mario games, don't need a perfect story as long as the setting is great. Some games don't even need story cause they have great gameplay or a unique twist, like Prison Architect or similar titles.

Ive seen and heard so much about destiny. Ive never played but i would love to. It seems like one of those games that has you coming back for more. In other words, high replay value.

It's a yes and no right now for me when it comes to replay value. Single player not really, although if you're looking to get all Legendary/Exotic gear (highest levels of equipment in the game) then it will be fun trying to get the equipment. You have Crucible in the game, which essentially is its matchmaking system, and that's also pretty fun considering it allows you to keep your customization via multiplayer.

The most fun part though is the Rair system, which basically is 6-player hell as you face some of the toughest enemies in existence. The developers weren't kidding when they said it would take several hours to beat. If anything, I feel like the game is meant to be played with friends, similar in how Borderlands works.

Oh, alright. I understand a little better now. Thanks for clearing some things up for me. Sorry for the silly question but, aside from it being 1st person, is it anything like Halo?

Nah that's not silly at all! Considering this is a game from Bungie, I've persoanlly been able to find a lot of similarities between the two: you as the Guardian is like Master Chief, your Ghost is basically Cortana, and the Hive is like the Flood. So in a way, it's like visual style of Halo combined with the loot system of Borderlands combined in a "MMO" of sorts, if that makes sense.

For the most part, yes, it makes sense to me. It would make a lot more sense to me if I actually played borderlands before xD

I have owned Destiny since it came out. The version I have is the Xbox 360 version. I have really enjoyed playing it. I play as a Titan class male Exo Guardian. I have reached level 20 while playing it. Course now I need to find an item that has Light in order to level up even higher.

How has the connection been for you as of late? I have it for the Xbox One and I keep getting disconnected because of the crap servers.

Mana November 13th, 2014 9:29 AM

I really enjoy Destiny! Yes, the story is pretty straight forward but the Crucible gameplay is pretty fun. I don't mind the grindy-ness of the bounties either.

So far myself and my bf both have level ~26 characters (he is using Void Walker Warlock, I am a Blade Dancer Hunter). We've just started getting Exotic weapon bounties which is pretty cool!

Only thing I find disappointing is there is DLC coming out already next month :( I wish companies would not make customers pay for extra content so soon after the initial release.

Woot woot another Blade Dancer! When does DLC usually come out? It'll be 3 months since he game has been released when the DLC drops; seems like an appropriate window to me.

Early December I think? The main controversy is some of the things for the DLC seem to be features that were available during the initial release but then removed for 'repairs'. Plus there's actually very little in the DLC for the price (last I saw it was $20?).

Has anyone been on Salvage? I played it just the other day, but then yesterday the option was missing. Have they made it weekend only orrrr...

Mario is really an example of when a story means little or even nothing to the game. Really all you need to know is "Bowser kidnapped the Princess. Now go save her."

Anyway I haven't played this game yet. From what I've seen of destiny, and from what people are saying it kinda deterred me from the game. But, I'd rather play the game myself then judge it based on what I've heard so I may pick it up some time in the future.

Yeah. You never play Mario for the story, it's the gameplay that's key.

But I've seen someone LP Destiny and it didn't appeal to me story-wise or gameplay-wise. I would definitely be willing to play it though, since I can't really judge it 100% having no experience with it. Definitely pick it up if it seems good to you, but you'd probably be better off waiting until it's priced lower in case it disappoints! :)

Eruption November 14th, 2014 5:36 PM

I had it and it was reasonably enjoyable for about a month then it got pretty stale. The single player is pretty much a write off because the story is practically non-existent and all the missions are the same with one exception, but I originally bought it with multiplayer in mind anyway so that's not too bad.

The crucible is pretty fun and it's quite a polished multiplayer compared to a lot of FPS games, but once you hit the soft level cap of 20 you don't get much motivation to keep playing since the loot drops that make you level past that seem completely random. Because of that, I stopped playing a couple of days after reaching level 20 and traded it in because I didn't see myself playing it again especially after the DLC pack comes out.

Nakasu November 16th, 2014 5:59 PM

The game is over hyped at most. I was also apart of that hype and was expecting a fabulous game. The lack of good storytelling, the cheap kills and weapons, oh and especially the broken RNG mechanics for the Loot. I really don't understand the 10 year plan..it's basically saying there is a considerably large amount of content you can get to make the game feel satisfying. That is fine and all but it doesn't excuse the missing content and storytelling from release. The introduction of the game explains more of the "plot" than anything else in the entire game. Don't get me wrong im not just here to bash the game. I really did enjoy the fact that early progression is rewarding and enjoyable. The leveling up system, to the creation of your own subclass you can switch back to back with. It kept me playing despite everything else. The gunplay is fabulous, Halo players would immediately feel at home with it's similar gameplay mechanics. And my god the soundtrack, it completely outclasses everything else in the game. The world and graphics are breath taking, especially Venus in particular. Something that made me really mad was the amount of grinding by doing strikes. I expected to at least get 2x the loot or better loot for completing the strike, but the RNG always screws you up. There are no tactics to the bosses during these raids. It's just hide behind something and lite em up. There are times when it feels like you have been fighting the boss for hours. Then when you finish the long and tiring boss you notice that Strike bosses don't drop loot. And this "light" system negates the players customization. PVP was excellent when the game first came out. Then after everyone becomes insanely OP, PVP becomes cheap with all of the 1 hit kills, and cheap OP abilities on a constant basis. The game is enjoyable at times. I really enjoy playing it. Im just nitpicking it because I spent an absurd amount of money on a game that was over hyped, and didn't live to the expectations that they told us about. It's a decent game but has it's flaws. To me it was another Skyrim experience. Overhyped.

El Héroe Oscuro November 17th, 2014 6:17 AM

My biggest complaint is the end game. I'm stuck on Level 24 because I've had absolutely no luck in finding legendary armor, and the fact that you need to grind and farm strikes and bounties just makes the game monotonous and boring. I've gotten so annoyed as of late raising my crypting rank and encrypting engrams just to get Rare items; all that time is wasted as a result. I wish the loot system was better, as it's ultimately a broken system that Bungie has implicated to "extend" the game.

Mana November 22nd, 2014 1:56 PM

is anyone still playing?

One thing that keeps me going is the idea of collecting the exotic equipment pieces. So far I have none, but I have the Thorn bounty - it's so fricking hard! I'm on what I'm hoping is the last stage, and it's gonna take me ages :(.

Mini-rant/explanation:
Spoiler:
I have to gain 500 'void kill' points - 5 points for a void kill in the crucible. Sounds alright at first until the realisation that at every death you lose two points. Then you realise my only Void weapon is a shotgun.

On a good game I win 30-40 points - most of my kills come from blink strike finishers so don't count. But on a bad game, like that really open Moon map, I can be at a loss. Turrents+Vehicles are just not possible to destory with such a close range, slow weapon DX.

So far I'm on 140/500 points - after about 15 crucible matches. I am steadily getting better though, it took about five matches just to get to 30 haha.

El Héroe Oscuro November 26th, 2014 2:44 PM

I'm so annoyed that I've put in over 50+ hours into this game. I'm stuck on Lv. 26 just trying to farm for Ascendent materials for my armor to level up more. It's so stupid yet I'm hooked for some bizarre reason.

TY December 9th, 2014 9:21 AM

I recently got it for PS3 (too impatient to wait for PC version if it comes for it and im not wasting money on a PS4) and I really like it. Coming from someone who really enjoyed Borderlands, I can get over the farming for good loot thing, since I already did that jazz before and back then I enjoyed it so why not in Destiny. It's not just a average FPS game, it is a looter-shooter as people call it. It's a sub-genre people either love or hate, and if you hated it in Borderlands (or even never played it cause of that), you will not like it in Destiny.

As of now I am lvl a 15 Titan with some blue armor but mainly white weapons cause screw you RNG, only giving me armor pieces from strikes while I want a good gun >_>

It takes awhile to get better armor/gear, and without getting too much into it because of spoilers, let's just say it will be hard once you reach level 20.

But cool, you bought the game! What part are you at?

I know how hard it is to get good gear, I played Borderlands 2 a lot and getting a Legendary there takes ages :P

Right now I have to start at Mars but I am doing some strikes first to get at least some blue weapons cause all I get is sodding white and sometimes a green one. Most of my green weapons are outdated aswell so they have no use anymore.

I don't know if you'll get that many blue drops from Strikes considering how low of a level you are. I'm a level 28 Hunter and basically a lot of blue engram drops came from the level 24 Strikes, which unfortunately don't drop anymore blue engrams thanks to the new DLC that's out. Maybe it's different for lower levels though, I honestly don't rememeber.

If you haven't already been doing it, keep checking in on the bounty board everyday. Ignoring the Crucible ones, Bounties in general will allow you to buy Legendary weapons once you reach Vanguard Rank 3. Also because you can only gain 100 Vanguard Marks in a given week and that's the currency accepted to buy Legendary weapons - at least from one of the quartermasters in the Tower - the. It's better to start earlier rather than later.
