To start off, how do you guys discover music? What are ways that you find new music to add to your playlists? Nowadays, I tend to stumble into them randomly. If I find some song by a particular artist on, say, Spotify, and wind up liking, I will begin digging into their albums and take things from there. If it's some site like YouTube, I'd check out related videos option, which usually tends to link towards songs I haven't heard of before, and I believe this to be a great method of music discovery. From time to time, I also find myself asking friends and acquaintances for suggestions, and thankfully, it doesn't cease to do the trick. |
Most of the time, I discover my new music in my workplace! xD My store manager has this wonderful playlist of music that I haven't heard of before, yet they were released in the past, or were part of previous albums of popular artists like Britney Spears or Selena Gomez. It gets hard to get the name and the artist because I'm always on the floor and sometimes I have to pester my manager to tell me who sang the song that was playing at the moment haha.
Usually Slacker, Pandora, and Spotify are my main music discoverers, but there's also satellite radio, that plays new music right before it hits radios. :D Also, I just made the userlist...let me know if I'm missing anyone <3 |
This reminds me, I also tend to run into new music every once in a while on the radio while driving and whatnot. Though, I rarely wind up turning on the device, as forget that it even exists, unfortunately, so I should probably put more effort into remembering; things could get sort of bothersome if nobody's there with you in the car, and radio could definitely help lighten up the mood, whether it be in a big way or small.

This has happened to me multiple times, and it's killing me that I can't remember specifically what song(s) it was. Closest thing I can think of is a song resembling an artist. I already knew Cool Kids was Echosmith, but I could've sworn Taylor Swift sang that song. Oddly enough none of their other stuff sounds like T. Swift. |
Anyone went through the same moment like I did? Thinking that an artist was singing a certain song but turned out to be someone else?
Like above, this has happened to me plenty of times, too. Off top of my head, one music would have to be International Love by Pitbull. It happened to be on the radio in my car when I'd first heard this song, and when it was on Chris Brown's part, I immediately thought it was Lady Gaga (because, well, this does seem to be her style, haha), and was quite surprised to hear Pit mention Brown's name somewhere down the song. I don't believe I've heard any of Chris' music before, so it was completely new to me, but he did seem to put together his lines pretty nicely; all-together, I definitely liked the song. |
Anyone went through the same moment like I did? Thinking that an artist was singing a certain song but turned out to be someone else?
A lot of times when I'm listening to rap if there isn't something distinguishing about them or if I don't know the song beforehand I think it's all the same person. Like a couple of times I've mistaken Snowgoons for a handful of other artists. |

When it comes to underrated artists, I consider unsigned artists (musicians that haven't signed in any record labels or anywhere), underrated...because I do feel that they have so much potential to make it in the musical world but it's hard for them to get themselves "heard" or get on mainstream. Pentatonix used to be on my list of underrated artists, but they're finally making themselves heard due to their outrageously successful Christmas album that was released this year. Here's one I really really love: ZACPOOR. I discovered him through a Facebook game I played a crapload of years ago, and he's still one of my favorites. He's written good music for various artists, but for himself he never really made it big.
|
I consider artists to be underrated when they aren't... necessarily out there, if you know what I mean. Some gain popularity and rise to stardom in a blink of an eye, while others stay where they are without any movement on the latter; it's kind of unfortunate. Off top of my head, one artist that comes to mind is A Fine Frenzy. I've discovered them while watching an episode of House MD (they've used their song throughout the ending), and I wound up loving it. Music's called Whisper, I believe, and the girl who sings seemed to have had a lovely voice. I began searching for more of their songs afterward, and have instantly become a fan.
|
I'm not very good at thinking of musical acts that I consider "underrated", but if there was some act that people saw as not too great but I could find stuff to like about, I might be able to talk about them as such. And yes, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimi Hendrix are anything but underrated, they're well known but were cut short.

Most of their singles from Night Visions were quite good, and while some of them kinda run off of overused concepts, they work because Dan Reynolds (lead singer) has a lot of passion and personality in his voice. I think AM/FM radio - provided you're in range of a decent station - is good to listen to given the fact that you don't have to pay for it. But satellite radio is so much better and there's so much good music that you don't find on local stations.

To return to the old topic, I agree that you don't have to pay for AM/FM radio, but then you have the ads...something satellite radio doesn't have. The radio stations here in my area are just awful, you have 2 songs playing and BOOM 15 minutes of commercials/ads. They don't even play that much music anymore. Just ads. It's what tuned me off from the radio altogether. It also depends on the area in which you people live in. We don't have a lot of decent stations here. Big cities tend to have a much wider variety. But I was able to discover some country stations from outside my area. They are almost nothing here.
Anyways, I was able to think of another topic for here! When I was at best buy the other day (bought a Chromecast. oops) and I noticed that the music section of the store has been minimized to only one section. When a year ago or so there were just...more than that. It goes to show that the digital music industry like iTunes and Amazon are doing much success than physical CDs. What does everyone think of this decline of music CD's and the majority of the music being available digitally? Do you still prefer CDs, digital music, or both? Why? |
I like CD's. I like to have the music in some kind of physical form and I like to be able to play it on any device rather than just my computer and my iPod. I like actually being able to handle a disc rather that just tapping things on a screen to get it to play, and I like the general feeling that the disc I'm holding in my hand is the thing that I bought that has the music on it.
|
What does everyone think of this decline of music CD's and the majority of the music being available digitally? Do you still prefer CDs, digital music, or both? Why?
Nowadays I prefer digital downloads on iTunes, but if there's an album that I see in the stores and it strikes my interest right away, it's one i'll pick up. I did ask for - and get - Taylor Swift's 1989 album for Christmas a week and a half ago, and last Christmas (2013) I got Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP 2. The former was one I didn't really feel like spending my own money on but it did interest me, and the latter was one I hadn't thought about spending my money on but I did receive it. |
What does everyone think of this decline of music CD's and the majority of the music being available digitally? Do you still prefer CDs, digital music, or both? Why?
I believe one reason behind their decline is portability, so to speak. When carrying music CDs, we're kind of limited to how much we could take and whatnot. For example, if we have a CD player, we would be required to use discs, but when going outside with them, we likely wouldn't have enough space to store CDs in our handbag, backpack, or anything else we might be having with us if there are other items in there. Not sure if I'm making much sense here, but I hope I am! Digitally, however, we don't have to face issues like this. All we would have to worry about is how much memory we have in our device, but aside from that, it truly makes things a lot convenient. If we have some sort of radio software downloaded, such as either Spotify or Last.fm, then that's even better, as we wouldn't have to be dealing with memory space or anything of the like (we might need to be subscribed to some data plan for this while on phone, but this is not an issue if there's wi-fi available). |
Oh yeah, that makes sense. CD players are becoming pretty obsolete (and they are slowly getting to the point that they're...considered ancient now), because now we have to rely on iPods, MP3's and any digital device. But then like, I also wanna keep my CD just in case I lose my digital stuff and I can just rip the CD in my computer to conserve my music.
As much as I do prefer my iTunes music, it's also nice to keep an album of music. |
That is kind of true, I can get where you're coming from with that. We have a big collection of older CDs in the basement at my parents' house, and some in the TV room where I reside when i'm staying there. But still, usually it's more convenient to order things on iTunes whenever. (Not helped by the fact that CDs have those stupid sticker seals that you have to take off of them...)
|
I am definitely on digital's side. I do like to be able to physically see and touch my music collection, but then I really don't care, because if I was going to do that then I'd have to actually go out and buy all of my music. I don't know about you but I haven't won the lottery lately.

Some records i'll give one full listen and mention if I like them or not, but i'm sure they'll have a handful of songs I probably won't remember after one listen. But since I haven't heard as much underground music recently, it's difficult for me to say. |
Do you ever forgot about how good an album was?
Eh, not really. If I like a full album I already have it downloaded and I listen to it often enough that I won't forget it. |
There are some albums I would love to revisit, like Foster the People's first album. All of their songs in that album were super amazing and I would listen to that album non stop. Same goes for Pentatonix's latest Vol 3 album, as well as Luke Bryan's Crash My Party.

We can all meet in a plug.dj room and we can all listen (and discover) our own music. It'd be a...one night event for the club. Anyone interested? :D |

Also, welcome to our music club, Tryndamere! We are definitely happy to have you. Oh, wow, a $200 headphone; that sounds expensive. I only have an ear-bud at the moment, which had cost me around $20; this is nothing in comparison, haha.

Where'd everyone go? :O
I'm pretty excited because I just heard the Breaking Benjamin is releasing a new album June 23 and they have a new song that will be out on Monday! It'll be nice to hear from them after 6 years. They were one of my favorite bands if not my favorite in high school. |

Your Current Favorite Song: hard to say my absolute favorite, but I'll go with this one. The guitar solo in this song is the most amazing thing. Spoiler:
My last.fm profile is in my profile, and that's the best way to get a definitive view of my music taste I guess. Or at least what I'm listening to. I listen to different kinds of music in phases. Right now I've been listening to one of my friends' Spotify playlist of music he's starred from the radio. It's a very unique playlist as far as taste. Quote:

Anybody listening to anything new lately? I just picked up Lifehouse's new album and while it doesn't do much by the way of breaking new ground, it's still pretty solid if you ask me. |

Not sure if anyone has ever heard of the band Royal Blood, but Google Play had their album for only 99 cents, so I snatched that up. They play them on satellite radio a lot, so I know 3 of their songs (Out of the Black, Figure it Out, Little Monster) and they're all pretty good, so there was no way I wasn't going for that deal. |
