The Pokemon OR/AS 'Should-Change' Thread

Hello! I hope you read this and tell me about your thoughts about the subject matter as well as what I will discuss to this community.

Well, I am now playing OR and it seems like some of my expectations have not been met yet. I have played Pokemon RBGY Versions from the very first year they have been available in the market but I have never had what I hoped for in this very recent generation.

And now the points:

*The Battles Are Too Easy. They should have made it much more challenging by beefing up the AI system in move selection as well as Individual Values. The problem here is that 80% (if not 85-90%) of your story mode, you end up one hitting Trainers' Pokemon because players just do the "Weakness Switch" on them and they will go down in flames very easily. Any Pokemon are subject to this, even the 'cool-looking' ones, the 'strong-looking' ones and even Legendaries. This is absurd. It takes away the thrill we have had when it was in the older generations. Bottom line is that we become 'very overpowered' at an early stage of the game.

*Even Number of Pokemon in Trainer Battles- Seriously, right from the very beginning, the first ever Gym Leader (Brock of Kanto) has only 2 Pokemon. It is not very realistic and noteworthy to defeat him with 6 Pokemon in full health. There should be implementation of "Even Numbers of Battling Pokemon" even just in Gyms. If a trainer will put out 3 Pokemon, then the Player should only use 3 Pokemon. Because that is how battles should work. It would be one heck of a better gaming. We do NOT need Nuzlocke if these things will be included in the game. There will be no need for them at all.

*Use of Trainer Items- Have you seen Ash use a Revive to wake his fainted Pokemon while battling a Trainer? Well, I haven't. And I believe there is no need for usage of items whenever in a Trainer battle. Why? Because what is the use of battling a Pokemon if you will just use 10 Hyper Potions just to stay alive to knock off the EXP out of the more powerful Pokemon? Your Pokemon will be much happier if he/she will be able to defeat the said Pokemon without the use of items. I will not be proud of my Pokemon if he/she has won being revived 20 times.

*Legendaries- Oh the Legends.. wait.. are they not just Pokemon that exist in almost every game in every Pokemon Players all around the Globe? Well that makes them... common Pokemon. Yes, that's right. What I really wish is that they implement a ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD Pokemon. One that can be won through WIFI competitions and the winner will defend the Pokemon ownership. Seriously. They should just be trophies and not just be given away easily. Do not get me wrong. I do not want 'all' of them to have only one original in existence. Some mild legendaries can exist in 50s or 100s but not 100,000s. That is just insanely out of the question. This takes away their Legendary title.

*Lack of Pokemon Present in the Overworld- It is the Pokemon World after all. Why do we see only few of them available in houses or in other maps? There should be Pokemon running around in towns, cities, malls. They may have improved in the latest version about this but to me, it is not good enough.

So far these are the main concerns I have. I have some more but my brain is a bit exhausted from the day's work. I will update soon and let you know which part of the Pokemon Generation should have/ should change.

Pinkie-Dawn November 27th, 2014 9:08 AM

These aren't legitimate criticisms in ORAS, especially the first one since anyone can beat a Pokémon game if they know what they're doing. The real criticism here is still the lack of type diversity, causing the gym leader/Elite Four's rosters to be lackluster. They could've added more Pokémon alongside of the cross-gen pre-evolved/evolved forms to fix this major issue, but they didn't. Don't even try telling me their teams change postgame, because I wanted those changes during the story mode, so my OCD doesn't kick in from this major flaw. It baffles me that the recent gen games get criticized for being too easy because of the rosters but praise the older games for their difficulty, even though the fact that Hoenn's Elite Four are still using mid-evolved forms of their ace Pokémon would've actually made me easier than the newer gens' Elite Four. Because of this issue, I sincerely hope that ORAS doesn't outsell XY, causing Game Freak to give the idea that fans only want enhanced versions of the old games rather than new experiences that fixes the major problem the old games suffered from, which is type diversity.

Pendraflare November 27th, 2014 9:23 AM

As far as legends go, it was mentioned in another thread, but some people think one of the reasons almost all of them are available here is so they can be used in VGC tournaments, which require Pokémon obtained in XY or ORAS, none from the DS games. (That and it aids in letting the newer players complete the Pokédex without having to transfer.)

And for the record, Steven's Champion team has 30 IVs across the board, but that's a different thing to address.

Howmander November 27th, 2014 9:24 AM

You guys DO understand this is a game set up for 6 and 7 years old to be able to beat, right?

morrison November 27th, 2014 9:45 AM

ah the ever present "it is too easy" cry. If you want a harder game play games that are harder. Pokemon is an all audiences game pretty much and there are people who enjoy not having to grind to hell to play through. If you want a harder game then nuzlocke it or similar.

I only just got it so cant say much yet on other issues.

I would like if the sky had a more representative colour . I can't stand the BSOD colour of sky. Also it seems to be quite windy all the time...

PlatinumDude November 27th, 2014 10:02 AM

The only thing I'd like to change in OR/AS is to include the Emerald Battle Frontier instead of the Battle Maison.

Nah November 27th, 2014 10:40 AM

I have to agree with Pinkie on the lack of Pokemon diversity in ORAS. I was hoping that they'd expand the Hoenn Dex in ORAS, and it really doesn't seem like that's the case. The Mauville Gym is still filled with Voltorbs and Magnemites. Battle Girls with a Meditite are still in Gyms that aren't Brawly's. Team Magma and Aqua still only use the Poochyena, Zubat, and Numel/Carvanha lines--Oh wait they sometimes use Grimers now, such a huge difference. And lemme guess, Glacia is still gonna come at me with 2 Sealeos and 2 Glalies? I wanna see some different stuff.....

@the thing about the games being too easy:
http://www.pokecommunity.com/showpost.php?p=8484353&postcount=11

So I don't have to type that all out again.

You know how the Battle Maison has you being able to team up with another player in Multi Battles? This is likely to ensure compatibility with X/Y's Battle Maison. Platinum and HG/SS were similar in this regard with the Battle Frontier, and also B/W and B2/W2 with the Battle Subway.

In regards to the other topics, the main reason to blame for recent Pokemon games being easier is likely changes in Experience mechanics (such as 6th Gen's overpowered Exp. Share causing overleveling at times) but also, if you're someone who has played Pokemon games for a long time, you get smarter which means you know how everything works and that makes the game easier as a result. For those who want to step up difficulty, we do have Nuzlockes and the like for that.

Legendaries being easily available in-game? In 6th Gen you can essentially obtain every non-event legendary (and also every starter as well) just by trading between X/Y and OR/AS. There are some solid claims backing this up, such as eligibility for VGC Tournaments which require Pokemon generated within 6th Gen (like what Pendraflare said) or to help newer players complete the Pokedex by implementing this "anti-frustration" feature, because not everyone can get Pokemon Bank.

I also agree with Pinkie-Dawn's post especially regarding type diversity in regional dexes. Some regions (like Sinnoh and Hoenn in particular) greatly lack specific types and that means type specialists who use the said lacking types can end up with dupes (aka different members of the same evolution line) or in the case of Volkner and Flint in D/P, Pokemon that aren't even their specialized type.

But in OR/AS she replaced the Sealeos with a duo of Froslass, which is something new. Same with Phoebe evolving her ace Dusclops into a Dusknoir. Still doesn't stop them having dupes from the same evolution lines though.

Maggs November 27th, 2014 1:41 PM

I guess it's a little cliche, but it would be amazing if GF started to make "Drayano-ish" games

Brittani November 27th, 2014 2:23 PM

I personally just have a few complaints:

Exp. Share- I hated the new mechanic for the exp. share. It's way too easy to level up your team now. You can pretty much just use the first pokemon in your party and never have to switch.

No Battle Frontier- I don't even need to explain this. I know the game hints towards an Emerald remake but the frontier should already be in ORAS in my opinion. There was no need to leave it out, it was a huge disappointment for me.

Trainers Are Too Easy- If I can OHKO a trainer's team without grinding for lvl gains then you know something needs to be done here. Yes, this game is for all ages but that doesn't mean there can't be a challenge every once in awhile. I'm breezing through this game like it's nothing and that's not what I had expected for this remake.

Cosplay Pikachu- Im probably the only one that thinks this but I just hate the idea of a pokemon who is good in all contest themes without you having to do anything and can transform into whichever form you need it to be in. It makes the competitions too easy. If they are going to give you something like that, why not make you put more effort into getting it? I won one competition and got it, woah what an accomplishment.

No Character Customization- Need I say more? X and Y had the right idea with you being able choose how your trainer looked. I know this is a remake but can we at least change outfits? It's really not that big of a deal but I was expecting a little more than what was given.

That's all I can think of right now. I was very impressed with the game all-in-all. The Dex Nav is just an awesome feature and flying is super fun (: That and it was nice to see the Hoenn world recreated in 3D, I think they did a very good job with it.

GF is fully capable of doing that. In fact, the rematches of the Elite Four in Generation 5 is the most brutal thing. Especially that Chandelure. The only problem with that is those who don't play the hacks or know alot about Pokémon will stand no chance against 30IVs, EV trained, competitve teams. Having that difficulty in the main game is trying on a young person's patience.

I would love to have something like that in Post-Game on a hard difficulty setting. But nothing like that in the main-game.

QueenNatSumi November 27th, 2014 3:42 PM

Steven got more awesome is that a plus? Oh yes it is. I just like the games for the enjoyment of it, i'll let it get hard during online battles. Frankly I feel exp share helps more with post game. Still at least you can turn it off which is why I dont really mind it so much. At least they gave us rematches with trainers and the E4 this time. Why I can agree with most things said. The games are an improvement. Plus secret bases are so cool.

BourbonWhiskey November 27th, 2014 5:22 PM

Sadly, only points already discussed in the past and the weaknesses of this thread was put to light and not the other points given.

Spinosaurus November 27th, 2014 5:27 PM

I'm genuinely bugged that the NPC Trainer's Pokemon rosters are still weak. This is one of the biggest flaws of the original RSE, and they haven't bothered to fix it. Gym leaders got it the worst. I would be fine if they had their Emerlad roster, but for some reason they stuck with their vastly inferior Ruby and Sapphire roster. Tate and Liza battle in Emerald was such a vast improvement over R/S because of the addition of Xatu and Claydol.

But it's not like these these remakes ever really tend to fix the original's flaws. HG/SS kept G/S/C's ******** level curve. >_>

Sydian November 27th, 2014 5:34 PM

I'm pretty in love with these games and don't have a lot of complaints, honestly. I just wish the music had a little more BOOM! to it, but it's still a nice soundtrack regardless.

About the legendary thing, ever since generation IV, people have been crying "too many legendaries!" And I understand that they should be in smaller quantities, but I think the reason for so many in this game is so that we can get pentagon legendaries. Makes sense to me since, from what I understand, they have to be XY/ORAS born (pentagon) to be used in tournaments and such, as well as what the traders online value. So while in the sense that legendaries shouldn't be given so freely, it doesn't make sense. But for the new pentagon system, it makes perfect sense and I think that was the intent on putting in so many.

It would be nice if challenge mode from BW2 would make a return, but even then, I didn't find that all too challenging if I'm being honest. I guess it depends on the player. I haven't had a hard time with Pokemon games since...my first playthrough of Diamond and Pearl. I've just been good at them since then and considering the target age range, it makes sense that they're on the easy side.

Pendraflare November 27th, 2014 5:53 PM

On the note of NPC trainer rosters, I think Gen V and XY's trainers actually had pretty strong teams, especially in areas like Frost Cavern, Victory Road, and the Veterans in those games. In those games, or at least XY, I would go so far as to say that trainers are more cumbersome than Gym Leaders. It's weird, but that's what i've been thrown.

Jacrad November 28th, 2014 4:28 PM

Take what I have with a grain of salt as I haven't played the game. But based on the information that has come out there's a lot that I'm disappointed about.

-The first is easy, no Battle Frontier. Getting to play the game with a set of new rules that both you and the AI have to follow would have been really cool and probably would keep my attention longer.

-The Mirage Spots just being battles rather than being areas to explore. They could have been able to add diversity and puzzles if they had turned these into explorable areas. (I know there are mirage islands, but I don't know if that counts as a Mirage Spot)

-The inability to choose the team of Pokemon your lackies have in your secret base. You can't really make a gym like they were advertising because you can't make a coherent theme. I was thinking you'd be able to assign a roster of Pokemon you actually own to the other trainers. Which would have been amazing!

-Less puzzles in the trick house. There's really no excuse for it.

-The removal of the berry mixing game. I personally liked it. Make a reset block, like the reset bag from X and Y for EVs, and we're cool.

-The removal of the Pokemon Center men. I guess the O-Power guy is supposed to replace them? But I really wanted to see what they would do with The Story Teller, Trader, Bard, Hipster, and Giddy.

-Inverse battles still being limited to once a day. Why is this even a thing? I should be able to battle the character any time that I want... (I was also hoping to see him get upgraded to a Frontier Brain.)

-Lack of another region. Reading this one you might immediately jump to 'The originals didn't have one >.>.' But that's exactly it. I was hoping ORAS could remedy what made RSE so lackluster for me and caused me to leave the Pokemon fandom way back when. (This one requires a lot more in-depth explanation to get where I'm coming from so please PM me if you want to talk about this particular point.)

Rainflower November 28th, 2014 4:43 PM

I don't have much complaints for the gameplay aside of the weaker NPCs/Gym Leaders. Basically, I'm more of a storyline/character/aesthetic person, so...

- They should've put back Frontier Brain and their redesigns (but they are probably too lazy for that, so).
- Where is Juan? We all know the poor guy's an Emerald-exclusive only, but hey, at least they can put him back to the story in a similar role to Lisia (as a coordinator) or Alder in B2/W2.
- I actually like having Pokemon center and Pokemart in one building, it's much more efficient and convenient too.
- Character customization. I really like that feature :<

Altairis November 29th, 2014 1:36 PM

My disappointments mostly lie with what Gamefreak changed from RS to ORAS, but there were some other things, for example:
- Teleportation: I know you could have selected No when your rival asked if you wanted to travel with them, but I honestly cannot imagine what made Gamefreak even put this option in the game. I accidentally beat the whole game without going to the desert, and I realize it's my fault but why would they ever include that option. It's like encouraging players to rush through the game instead of exploring the region =/
- Mirage Tower: Speaking of the desert, I wish Mirage Tower was back, and maybe there was some Team Aqua/Magma grunts in there. The Mach Bike puzzle would be easier because of the new controls, but it would still be pretty cool.
- Lack of Juan: I didn't like how Juan disappeared off of the face of PokeEarth. He was a gym leader for one game, would have been nice to see him again.
- Lack of Battle Frontier: I realize that it was still being built in Ruby and Sapphire but honestly who cares if the timeline is broken if we can have the Battle Frontier back, lol. That thing was awesome and challenging.
- Handing us legendaries: It was nice, I guess, that we got [email protected] without chasing after it postgame but it was literally just thrown in there and handed to us on a silver platter. I don't care that we got access to a zillion legendaries in game, because it's awesome and nice that I don't have to transfer them all.
- No Sandform Castform! :(
- Split Pokemart + Pokecenter: not a big deal, but I don't really get why they did it regardless.
- New Mauville: I really hate this design, not only is it kind of confusing but it feels claustrophobic to me, why is an entire city under one roof?

Honestly, having played these games, I really LOVE most of the additions they did (DexNav, Flying, new characters), but I really do like Emerald's storyline a little better. I didn't really feel like Kyogre was going to destroy the world, kinda felt like it was just waiting for me. Seeing a Primal battle and having to go get Rayquaza would have been awesome, honestly, but that's just a personal preference. The opposite team in the game you weren't playing was also a bit weird, and I didn't really like how easily the evil teams gave up after literally achieving their goal.

This is what bothered me when ORAS was announced, not only will it retcon Emerald as non-canon, but anything after it in the timeline as non-canon, since Juan appears in BW2's PWT.

Yet you people complained that XY had too few legendaries to catch. This is why Game Freak should never listen to their fans when it comes to adding content, because the fans have no idea what they really want due to how diverse they are.

Quote:

They wanted to stay true to the original layout, since it's a remake. While you could say they could at least add a new exclusive building to take the PokeMart's place, but you've complained about New Mauville, so presumably, you'll be too lightly on the new building.

It was stated that Brendan and May were too iconic to be customizable, which is why it was exclusive to XY, since Calem and Serena are too recent to become iconic themselves.

MarinoKadame November 30th, 2014 8:26 AM

Even if they were too iconic for customisation, they could of at least gave us different color for the outfits, be it blue and green. also the contest outfit model is kind of useless if it's only to show off to Lisia and some seconds before a contest, they could of at least let us wear it the whole game.

The only problem with that is now everyone will look the same online, and if 2 people happen to have the same name only their class icon will make them different. And speaking of icons why they didn't even bothered to offer May and Brendan icons.

I've only got 6 badges atm, but didn't they pull some parallel dimension shtick with ORAS, making it its own separate canon from most of the rest of the series or something like that?

I don't know why you're addressing me as if I represent the entire Pokemon fanbase as a whole or just addressing what I put in bold instead of what I said after, but okay.

I literally said I didn't care amount the amount of legendaries, (in fact, I said I liked how we had access to all of them) I cared about how [email protected] were handed to us - given without capture. That was my problem, not the amount. I also don't understand how you drew the connection between New Mauville and the split Pokemon Center/Mart, because I explicitly stated that I didn't like New Mauville because it had a confusing layout and it felt claustrophobic due to an entire city being under one roof, I said nothing about me not liking it because it was a new building.

Plus, the whole point of a remake is not to do things exactly as they were before. By saying, "they wanted to do it as it was before," you're ignoring everything Gamefreak put into the game that wasn't there - well, let's just toss out the Delta Episode, Primals, Mega Evolutions, new aspects of Secret Bases and contests, Pokemon that were introduced after Gen 3, because none of those were in the original game and thus shouldn't be in a remake, right? The whole point of a remake is to make the games better, plus at the end of the game it says "Based off of the works by the Ruby and Sapphire development team" (something like that) so Gamefreak took what they liked about Gen 3 and worked off of it, they didn't necessarily make RS on 3ds and then said, "What can we do to change this?"

Altius November 30th, 2014 7:36 PM

Well, apart from the obvious ones like the Battle Frontier, I was hoping for gym leader as well as rival rematches. I know Wally counts as one, but the original pair can mega evolve as well. It's a bit sad to see them able to mega evolve once in a rather sudden battle.

mist1234 December 27th, 2014 10:33 AM

I don't know about you guys but, I came here for the trading system. I really hope there is some way to tell the gamedevs that the trading system without levels and communication is terribly inefficient. How am I going to know who to trade with judging by their faces? And how can I tell others I like or dislike his or her offering pokemon? I'm really confused about why they went back in the improvements they made in BW BW2 and XY. :(
