Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle?
We need to revive some of these threads. ; -;
http://pkmn.net/sprites/frlg/1.png http://pkmn.net/sprites/frlg/4.png http://pkmn.net/sprites/frlg/7.png Which starter did you choose in FR/LG in your first playthrough, if you remember? Did you make new files to use the other starters? Which was your favorite to use? What do you think of the Kanto starters overall? |
Bulbasaur is probably the best one in-game, since it has advantage over Brock and Misty and Venusaur is probably the best against Gary. However, I don't really have a favourite. Charizard is definitely the best one competitively, though.
Charmander. It reminds of both games and anime so I always go with it. Yes, it does have trouble beating Brock if it doesnt have Metal Claw but other than that it's pretty awesome :D
Starters are awesome, design and balance wise, in my opinion. Even with nostalgia excluded, they are still my favorite set of starters :D |
My nostalgia glasses see flawlessness.
It's funny because I began with loving Charmander and always choosing it as the starter. I've really lost my excitement for that Pokemon and so I almost always go with Squirtle or Bulbasaur. |
I wound up picking all three, haha.
In my first run of FireRed version, I chose Charmander. Back then, I used to be obsessed with fire-types, generally, which was one of the reasons to my decision. Next is that Charizard was the game's mascot, so it seemed to have been sort of fitting for me to go with that. Second run—when it came to selecting starters, I picked Squirtle. I would have chosen Charmander again, but heavily leaned on not doing so, as I had already done it in my previous play-through. As for third run, it was Bulbasaur, all due to similar reasons. |
Squirtle. I always choose Squirtle. I like how cute he is and I think the "Squartle Squad" from the anime made me think of him in a cute and kick-ass way. I love turtle's (or tortoise's) in general. Plus, water-type starters are the way for me.
Bulbasaur, him being chosen makes the first 2 gyms easy to beat.
Bulbasaur is my absolute favorite Pokémon of all time. However, I picked Squirtle during my very first playthrough because my sister already had a good Bulbasaur that she was willing to trade me. Of course, I ended up picking Bulbasaur in all of my subsequent playthroughs.
While I'm not that fond of the Kanto region as a whole, the Kanto starters have always been my favorite starter trio (though I really like the others, as well). |
I picked Charmander for my very first run through FireRed, and had so much fun that I pretty much always pick Charmander. While I have used the other starters, it just feels wrong to play FireRed/LeafGreen without starting with Charmander.
SQUIRTLE, its my first choose when im started to play on fr/lg . Its energetic and when i so it the series, i love the episode when the squirtle squad got a mission.. haha :) ! Squirtle! Squirtle! Squirtle! ^_^
I chose Squirtle. I chose Squirtle at the very beginning starting with Pokemon Blue Version, so it felt fitting to start with Squirtle once again. He's at level 82 and I still have him somewhere in Pokemon Bank.
I chose Bulbasuar. I love Bulbasuar. I think the whole Charmander and Charizard thing is overrated. I chose Squirtile in my other version. The two of them help loads with Brock and Misty!
I picked Charmander for my first playthrough. The fact that it had metal claw made Brock easier to beat.
I picked Bulbasaur because of the first 3 gyms and he was a monster. I loved him in that generation. I made so many files I wanted to text all of their abilities and they all did great. I won the game with Bulbasaur. #Memories
Picked Bulbasaur in FRLG since I picked Squirtle in R/B
The game wasn't kidding on how things would start out for the starters (Oak saying Bulbasaur is easy to raise, Squirtle being more on the medium side of things, Charmander being the hardest to raise) Quote:
I have always preferred Charmander over the other two, but it already made the game so dull.
I went with Bulbasaur and had fun, so Bulbasaur wins. |
I've always gone with Bulbasaur. It made the game easier for me when it evolved into Venusaur. That thing was a beast. xD And I loved it.
I always choose Squirtle, since it has an advantage over Charizard and Venusaur, when it becomes a blastoise. Surf & Ice beam with a quick claw. Yea
I always go with Charmander when it's this lot. I restarted my game in FR because I had an unbalanced team and still went with Charmander.
My friend that had gifted the cartridge to me picked a Bulbasaur though. Never used it (I moved it to HG) but heard good things about Venasaur. |
Squirtle!
http://pkmn.net/sprites/frlg/7.png Just to quote myself from the starter trio thread: Quote:
There was also that dang Rock Tunnel, you know, with all the Hikers and their Ground and Rock pokemon.. ugh, I regretted not training my Bulbasaur or Squirtle that I've gotten on Pokémon Yellow, and those Rock Pokémon were really tough to beat, especially the ones with Self-Destruct that OHKO'd my Pikachu. So there fore, Squirtle was just my way of saying 'REVENGE' to all those ground pokemon in Pokemon LeafGreen, and so that I could breeze through the game much easier! (◍•ᴗ•◍)❤ |
I personally tend to favour Squirtle, he was my first ever starter and will always have a place in my heart~! Though I did go through part of the game with charmander once, and that was a fun experience.
Ah, a hard decision it can be. But I think Squirtle has most often been my favorite.
I am all about Bulbasaur ^^ though I love all three. This is probably the only gen until X and Y that I truly love all three starters. That being said, I cannot stand the design of Blastoise, I really dislike the cannons. Always felt like one artist on the team was really pushing for a mech warrior in the line-up. Shame on that person.
Squirtle, because Water types are useful when paired with a good Defense stat.
I recall choosing squirtle because of ice beama nd water attacks XP.
I usually choose Charmander since when it evolved to Charizard I can use fly so I can go to different cities, although Squirtle is usually my favorite out of the three.
I used to choose Squirtle and charmandar, but now I choose Bulbasaur because it fills the spot in my team for a grass type whereas I can choose anything else for fire and water. I had Red, Blue, Fire Red, and Leaf Green so I got to use everything. My favorite is Squirtle because it learns a lot of different moves and has the best chances of defeating the other starters in a 1 on 1 battle. Kanto starters are about my second or third favorite.
My favourite starter is Squirtle, but I was always unsure about this. I liked Charmander too (Fire-type Pokémon are more my type).
Kanto starters are good. They were the first starter Pokémon and were great in a surprising sorta way. |
I always choose Charmander because he has a soft spot in my heart. :)
I chose Bulbasaur and Squirtle a few of my many times playing Fire Red or Leaf Green, but I usually choose Charmander because it seems like he gets the most exp out of the three and evolves into the beloved Charizard who I use for fly. Plus, I usually get like a Starmie or a Poliwrath to fill in for Squirtle, and a Vileplume for Bulbasaur. The only problem with Charizard is facing either your Rival or Lance. Tough times -_-
Charmander Cuz Charizard is Awesome
As with most starters, I end up choosing different ones in different playthroughs, but with my newest playthrough of Leaf Green, which I started just over two weeks ago, I went with Bulbasaur. I'm glad I did because I find it's quite under-appreciated compared to the other two, and although it's Grass-type it still does good against quite a few of the opponents present (particularly at the beginning of the game).
Bulbasaur all the way, that first gen toxic + leech seed combo, just awesome :D
charmander was my first choice because i used to think there weren't any other fire pokemons available, lol. if i'd to play kanto again bulbasaur would be my choice - all the other grass pokemons from gen 1 aren't as cool as the fire/water types in my opinion.
In my very first playthrough of FireRed, I picked Charmander. In all of my following playthroughs, I picked Squirtle for most of them, and then recently in the past couple of years I've started to really appreciate Bulbasaur.
So, first one was Charmander, but right now my favorite is Bulbasaur, closely followed by Squirtle, and then Charmander! |
I choose squirtle and ended up over leveling him because I would use him for every battle, even if he had a typing disadvantage. I swept through all the gym leaders in my fire game and the elite four. I had a very unbalanced team and had trouble leveling my other pokemon up (I didn't know anything about the exp. share in those days).
AND THAT IS WHY MY FAVOURITE POKEMON IS BLASTOISE. |
I've played with all three, but my first starter in FireRed was FIREY the Charmander!
I chose Squirtle, just as I did back in my original Red file. Blastoise is my favorite Pokemon, so I tend to pick Squirtle whenever it's available.
My friend and I started our games at the same time, and we reset one file over and over again to get spares of each of the starters, so I used all three when playing. The Kanto starters are probably my favorite starter trio overall. |
I love their designs, on the competitive aspect I prefer Charmander's though. :(
I recall restarting and trading off the starters in order to get all the Kanto starter trio. |
In the brief moment I played Leaf Green a few years back, the chosen starter on the file was Squirtle, so I'd say Squirtle here. However if I was playing it myself I would have gone for Bulbasaur as well.
Bulbasaur is the only Kanto starter I pick. I like the other two fine but theyre not Bulbasaur.

In Leaf Green I picked Charmander as a challenge since other than Squirtle and Bulbasaur the only available Pokemon that can defeat Brock is Mankey in the grass outside the Pokemon league entrance (there is also a Gary battle just above the grass), an area that is easy to forget which I did here.
I'd first discovered it in the original games but by that time they were pretty obsolete. hehe. I've begun a few new files in Fire Red and am just beginning in a new one now. I chose this time to start with Bulbasaur and it took me weeks, but I successfully soft-reset it shiny! My choice was driven by the fact that I had chosen Bulbasaur least often in the original games and I believe it's the best grass Pokemon in its generation whereas there are plenty of good fire and water types. For me that cancels out the fact that it's also the easiest starter because it can single-handedly take out both Brock and Misty. I was also adamant for once about making it shiny (usually try as I might I have little patience for it) because I find it's line's shiny colors beautiful. Ivysaur's yellow flower pwns the pink. I was disappointed to discover Venusaur's is orange, so now I have to decide whether or not to fully evolve it. |
Bulbasaur is probably my favourite of the three, that's the one I'll usually choose since it was my first ever starter choice back playing Blue.
I am playing Leaf Green currently, and I picked Bulbasaur. While I'm not a huge fan of Grass types, it has a great moveset and Venusaur is just too good.
Back when I was a lot younger, the only one I'd use was Bulbasaur. Bulbasaur destroyed the early game! It could single-handedly take out Brock, Misty, Lt. Surge...
Now I've branched out a lot more and I find that I like Charmander the most, as I try to make the games as challenging as possible now. Charizard seems to be the strongest of the three, even if it has the fewest favorable matchups in Kanto. I've never been too fond of Squirtle, but that's not to say I don't like it. I've gotten it to Wartortle a few times (never Blastoise, sad to say) and it's been fun using it, but it doesn't stick out as particularly great. |
I honestly like all 3! All 3 are cute in their first stages. I only like Ivysaur and Wartortle though. I don't care for Charmeleon at all. I like all 3 of the final evolutions, but I have to say Charmander is the closest to my heart.
I usually get all three in the very beginning of the game but each time I start a new game I pick Charmander first. Just something about that little guy.
Squirtle was the first starter I have ever picked. I loved its design, and the fact I wouldn't have to pick up another water Pokemon to use Surf.
However, the more I played the games, the more I began to appreciate all of their designs equally. I don't really have a preference when it comes to starters of any generation, and I just pick whatever one I feel like during that particular playthrough. |
I first played Leaf Green and so i end up choosing Bulbasaur. I didn't make any new files because my skills as Hacker were and still are non existent. My favorite of the three starters is Squirtle because of the anime and his "gang" and cool glasses. :) Well here is my opinion of the Kanto starters. For me Venusaur is the strongest, then Blastoise and in the last place is Charizard. Venusaur is great at stall games and Blastoise is good overall but I always thought that Charizard is kinda fragile. In artwork Charizard is coolest, than Blastoise and in the last place Venusaur. I remember when i played with Blastoise in FR/LG he was kinda balanced and when he learn Ice Beam he was really useful. Venusaur have one of the best moves in game Leech Seed so i always ended up choosing one of these two.
Bulbasaur! <3
I've used Charmander and Squirtle in other playthroughs, so I've played with them all, and Squirtle is a really close second but ultimately I have a soft spot for Bulbasaur. Charmander was the first one I used in FRLG and I love the Metal Claw addition for facing Brock, but I'm not the craziest about it. Maybe someday I'll play one of the games again and use Charmander. |
Bulbasaur master race. Charizard and Squirtle are far too mainstream.
Always Bulbasaur for me in earlier play throughts but Charmander is a popular choice because of the relative rarity of fire types.
I've always chosen Charmander back then but noe I choose Bulbasaur since it is easier ti raise although Charizard is better competitively
Like a lot of people I know, I instantly grew attached to Charmander, and I even picked to use Charmander in my X playthrough. However, that's for a different topic. I liked Charmander's design, stats, and evolutions more than Bulbasaur's or Squirtle's.
Charmander. My favorite type, knows awesome moves, evolves to super powerful Pokemon, has a very good looking shiny counterpart. What else can I ask for?
I'd choose Charmander, it's far greater than the others
Charmander. I never pick any Grass starters except for Treecko on occasion, and it feels like much of my walkthrough time throughout the series has been spent with a Water-type starter.
but a fact chicorita is the worst starter,,
Charmander. No hesitation. The first two gyms are tough, but easily recoverable. The way I see it is:
Bulbasaur : 2 easy gyms. Squirtle : 1 easy gym. Charmander char: 0 easy gym. I didn't pick him for the challenge though. He's cute! Spoiler:

Charmander will always be the dearest to me.
I chose Squirtle in my first playthrough. Mainly because Squirtle is kyoot.
Other then that, I generally go for Bulbasaur now. I like using the not so popular starters ^_^; |
In My very first game (Pokemon Blue) i picked Squirtle, in Leaf Green and Fire Red i usually picked Bulbasaur....Hard to tell witch one is more favorite to me,but if i had to pick i would pick Squirtle.
Also funny thing,my best friend always picked Charmender in all Games where its available,so we had some sort of Red Blue action going on :D |
All 3 because I'm a ****ing gangsta like that.
Charmander for FR, Squirtle for LG, and Bulbasaur for a no catch run on FR. Good times man, good times. |
I have and always will love my Bulbasuar with the entirety of my soul.
I've used all three on different playthroughs.
When I first got LeafGreen, I used Bulbasaur. A few years later, I got FireRed and used Charmander. But I've also used Squirtle. |
well charmander is my first pick because it is cute and it can evolve into charmeleon and charizard which has the most bad ass looking pokemon. I also used squirtle and bulbasaur too. These starters are the most classic and the best yet.
I went with charmander on my first FR play through however I prefer squirte.
Charmander for Charizar
I think bulbasaur has the most advantages over the gyms being supper effective against Misty, Brock and giovanni plus bulbasaur has a resistance to Surge and erica however squirtle and charmander have a lot more to offer outside of gyms.
I chose Bulbasaur at first play.
but I like charizard :) |
I still picked Bulbasaur for my Firered run even though I picked it for Red too since it's just for the nostalgia.
I choose Squirtle most of the time, but occasionally I'll do a run with Charmander so I can teach it Seismic Toss after a while. I don't like Bulbasaur much, so I don't use them at all.
Charmander.
Yeah, I started with Charmander. Ever since I first played Red, I've made it a tradition to always pick the fire-type starters for every single one of my first play-throughs. I've played FR/LG using the other starters, but to be honest, I've never beaten the Elite Four using any of the other options. Just... never happened. Don't get me wrong, I like the other Kanto starters a lot, I just have my favorites. :> |
Squirtle! I love Blastoise and almost always tend to pick the Water type starter.
Nowadays I choose bulbasaur because of it's type advantage against the first two gyms, but my very first starter was squirtle.
Squirtle all the way! He's by far the cutest!
I think it was Charmander, but I've also recalled using Bulbasaur as well! I never made it past the second gym however, I was only about six or seven and didn't know what the hell I was doing back then. Quite a shame, child me would have probably jumped for joy when my Charmeleon finally evolved to a Charizard. :(
Charmander.
Squirtle. I like water type Pokémon so I chose it.
Oh boy, this is my favorite set of starters and it's always so hard to choose! XD I used Squirtle the first time and named it Salty; I chose Bulbasaur and Charmander various times and the two are still battling for the coveted favorite spot... I definitely love Bulbasaur, though :)
I tend to go with Squirtle, but I try to switch it up every now and then. I love 'em all, I can't help it DX.
If I remember correctly, Bulbasaur was my first... but it could have been Squirtle too. |
I usually go with Bulbasaur because it's an easy way to beat the first two gyms.
I tend to prefer leveling the Pokémon I have to catching new ones, and as a result I often get to the Elite Four without even having a full team of 6. Picking Bulbasaur right off the bat gives me time to decide what my second Pokémon should be rather than having to catch one right away to deal with Misty. |
Squirtle! Mostly because I always had Pokemon Blue so I always want to get the Pokemon that's on the cover. A long time later, it becomes my favorite Pokemon, so I pick Squirtle as my Kanto starter.
First playthrough? Charmander. But now its a different story...
Generally bulbasaur, he never really caught my eye until generation 6 where I used him and oh boy the fairies didn't stand a chance... And since we might as well, Charmander is my second choice because he has a good design. Although I like totodile and treeko as well so it might be a reptile thing... And Mega Charizard Y? The greatest design, so much better than the terrible design they gave X. I mean thanks gamefreak for making the kids think they're cool cause they have a "Shiny" charizard. *Nerd rage* (Actually if you color swap Mega X with a standard pallete, he isn't that bad, but Y is still better IMO) Oh and squirtle... eh. I actually rank him near the bottom of all 18 starters, Although turtwig and chikorita are down there with him. |
in my first playthrough I chosen charmander in pokemon firered, in leafgreen I chosen bulbasaur and in pokemo. red (yes the one of gb) I chosen squirtle, but of the three I prefer charmander
Charmander, cos the extra Flying type in Charizard made things slightly easier.
Unless I'm doing like a monotype challenge, then I will always pick charmander because that is my favorite starter of the three and charizard is such a badass Pokemon. I really like all of the starters for Gen. 1.
I usually pick Charmander, because of FRLG's small number of Fire-types. Before completing the seventh gym, the only options are Arcanine (FR), Ninetales (LG), and Flareon. Even afterwards, the only options are Rapidash, Magmar (LG), and, if you're willing to use it, Moltres.
Grass and Water have more options available earlier on. |
I used to always choose Charmander but these days, I'm more of a squirtle/bulbasaur person. I guess years of always going with the same thing got to me!
My first Firered I used my favorite, Squirtle. Got Leafgreen and used Bulbasaur, and got another Firered and finally was able to use Charmander :P
Only got the first game in 2012, played LG last year, and just fnishing my second FR now actually. I'm glad I was able to use all of Kanto's starters over time :D |
I like them all. It really just depends on who my team consists of since I usually plan my team ahead of time.
I like using Charmander. Charizard's secondary Flying typing lets me save the teamslot I would normally dedicate to Pidgeot for something potentially more useful. That said, I don't mind using Bulbasaur or Squirtle since they make life much easier when facing the first couple of Gyms.
I first used Squirtle. Pretty good, i liked using it. I just never evolved it into Blastoise.
You can choose any pokemon which you love, but from my point, Charmander is considered the best. If you choose Bulbasaur, then your little dinosaur will face a FLYING and FIRE lizard in the end, which is quadruple the power to a tiny GRASS pokemon. If you choose Squirtle, you can destroy Venusaur later with your Ice Beam, but later in the game you will find more powerful Water pokemon. Yes, more powerful. For example, exchange with your friend and have a Polywrath - Fighter pokemon, or Gyarados or even Lapras. As you can see, lots of Water pokemon in the First Generation to choose. However Charizard is the only Flying combined with Fire, with great Special attack and dmg.
I've only used bulbasaur and It was pretty easy, would choose charmander next time though
I think the most powerful is Blastoise as I am a big fan of the water-type pokemon.
I actually went with Bulbasaur, since it makes the game quite easy getting through the first two gyms and resisting the third. Like most, I eventually reset and went through with them all.
Squirmasaur!!
I've played through the games so many times that I'm certain I've played with all three of them at some point. I used to default to Charmander all the time, but lately I've been a lot more likely to go with Bulbasaur.
For some it might depend on how much of a challenge you want. I think Bulbasaur is the easiest to start out with, while Charmander presents a little more of a challenge with the first two gyms. Squirtle is relatively easy to start with and I would say it's a little harder later with the electric and grass gyms, but by then I think most people definitely have started to build a team with other pokemon. |
