ORAS OU Team Building Competition (Go vote!)

ORAS OverUsed Team Building Competition

Hey PokéCommunity! This is our version of the team building competitions you'll find on Smogon, like this one. We hope that this competition will allow people to hone their team building skills and learn from their peers so that a major barrier for entry to battling here at PC ("I don't have a good team") will be defanged. More importantly, its main purpose is just to be a fun way to casually compete with others in a different environment than a battle and to be a fun way to engage competitive Pokemon.

The process is relatively straightforward. Each round will last two weeks. The rounds will start with me posting a new core of two Pokemon. Once the core is posted, you will have a full week to brainstorm, test, and post your team which includes those two core members. After a week, submissions will be closed, and there will be three days to discuss the teams that have been posted and to offer suggestions. Anyone who made a submission can implement suggestions or otherwise edit their team during this time if they so choose, so long as they note what edits have been made. (You are also free to discuss the teams during the submission period! This is just to make sure that there is enough room for discussion.) There will then be three days of voting. The top three vote-getters will be put before a three-person panel (currently consisting of myself, D_A, and a third person to be named soon) who will determine the winner. We will post an explanation for each decision. We will then post a new core and begin again!

While there aren't any rules, per se, we do ask that you consider the following guidelines:
  • When you post a team, please include an importable of your team (you can copy this from Showdown) and an explanation of the choices you made during team building. A sample entry is posted below.
  • There is no need for ostentatious presentation of your submission, but using images as a visual aid would be a good touch.
  • Don't bandwagon teams during the voting process. That's why the judging panel exists, but even so, try to judge the team on its own merits rather than who posted it.
  • When voting, consider the criteria that the panel will be using: viability (if the team good?), creativity (does it stray from standard builds?), and synergy (is there evidence of thoughtful team building?).
  • You can only post one team for each round, so use your submission wisely!
  • Remember that this is for fun, so don't be a jerk when making suggestions for other teams. It's a competition, yes, but we are also striving for a sort of collective construction of team-building knowledge.

Here is a sample submission, based on the core of Landorus-T and Mega Manectric:

Explanation:

This team is based around the fast VoltTurn core of Mega Manectric and Choice Scarf Landorus-T. I wanted to use a Pokemon that could benefit from the free turns that their momentum provides, and Greninja was the perfect choice given how difficult it is to stop. Latios and Heatran form a nice hazards core, and the latter prevents this team from getting destroyed by Earthquake Charizard X. Bisharp is another Pokemon that can struggle to get into battle but is very difficult to stop once it gets in. He's also a major weapon against stall teams, who are quite problematic for this team since it is compromised of so many fast hitters who don't necessarily break walls very well.

mega altaria and kyurem black form a very good offensive core and mega altaria also has great synergy with jirachi. scarf kyub outspeeds jolly scarf lando. sharp and kyub help beat gengar, starmie as an offensive rapid spinner and also to beat keldeo and the likes. bb from sharp beak talonflame is like a 2hko to terrak, but talon doesnt seem like much of a problem.

Mega Altaria and Jirachi form a nice duo. Considering all bulky waters can be handled by Heracross and Manaphy, Body Slam replaces Toxic. This move can paralyze Landorus, which can otherwise screw up this team pretty badly. Especially considering Jirachi can tank an Earth Power at full health. Jirachi also provides Wish support from the team.
With Wish support and Stealth Rock up, DD Mega Altaria can do a nice job of sweeping offensive teams. Decided to go with max attack and max speed since Altaria needs all the power it can get.
Manaphy helps against Air Balloon Heatran, Landorus-T and Gliscor and punishes stall. With Wish support it can also clean up weakened offense.
Heracross is an excellent status absorber, being able to take on Breloom, Rotom-W, Mega Slowbro and Mega Sableye. It's also the team's main answer to Ferrothorn and Cresselia. It smashes balanced and stall teams with support from Jirachi, especially if burned or poisoned.
Heatran is an amazing lure to Rotom-W and Mega Swampert while OHKOing Ferrothorn, Mega Heracross, Skarmory and Scizor. It also sets up SR for the team. Earth Power is for opposing Heatran,
And finally, Scarf Tyranitar's main role on this team is to checkmate [email protected], Gengar, Starmie, Scarf Magnezone and Mega Manectric, which can otherwise really annoy Heracross and turn the tables on Manaphy's sweep. I prefer it over Bisharp since it takes special hits much better (doesn't take a fuckton from Draco Meteor), checks Talonflame if Rhyperior's dead. Sand Stream is helpful since it allows the team to screw over rain teams, which means Mega Swampert can't go to town.

Admittedly Mega Meta is ridiculously annoying since I usually need to sac one Pokemon to kill it, or try to paralyze it with Jirachi and hope it doesn't have EQ. Landorus is also troublesome, although Jirachi can also sort of handle it (paralyze + flinch), while Altaria can play mindgames with it.

Also, where's the "You can't vote for yourself" rule?

Nah January 8th, 2015 12:33 PM

Eh fuck it, I'll join in too. Don't expect anything great though.

Thought I'd try something a little more on the defensive side. Paraflinch sets on Jirachi are always really nice, and this one does that while having some bulk. Body Slam is there to try and paralyze Ground types if need be, Wish for healing. Mega Altaria's just a standard bulky MegaTaria. Went with Fire Blast instead of Earthquake because of Lando-T. Blissey is a somewhat different answer to Gengar; I know most people prefer Chansey, but Chansey is just Gengar bait. Decided on Ice Beam instead of Flamethrower because I felt that Steels could more or less be covered by the rest of the team and Ice is great for slapping all the Ice-weak pokes running around. Tentacruel provides some useful resists (Water, Ice, Fairy, Poison, etc), soaks up Toxic Spikes laid on my side and is immune to Toxic, while both setting up and removing hazards for me. Lando-T pairs well with it, being immune to 2 of Tentacruel's weaknesses while Tentacruel resists Water and Ice for Lando. Lando also provides Stealth Rocks and much needed EdgeQuake coverage. Replaced Conkeldurr with Chesnaught as per Anti's suggestion. Bulletproof is a nice ability (and it even makes Chesnaught immune to Gengar's most common attacks), and being Grass/Fighting type gives me a Spore/Sleep Powder/Leech Seed immunity and another Water and Electric resist while still maintaining a Dark resist. Swapped Blissey with Cofagrigus to be a sorta mixed wall and spinblocker and provide burns. Shuts down Mega Meta and Mega Gallade, more or less. Suppose I could've used Sableye but it's too mainstream less bulky and is Fairy weak. Still not sure if it's the best option, but....

Anti January 9th, 2015 6:15 AM

I'll post some feedback! :)

srinator: The biggest problem I'm seeing is defensively, especially against opposing Fire-types. Heatran is actually a huge problem, especially if it runs Flash Cannon or Toxic for Altaria (even with Heal Bell, it can Toxic spam you and stall you out of PP or even Taunt and then toss Toxic your way), while SD Talonflame is a pretty big lategame threat. (Zap is really easy to corner with SR damage and doesn't take Blitz very well.) It also seems stall weak, in large part because of the Heatran problem. To fix this (hope this isn't too drastic), I may consider Starmie over Celebi (still checks Keld decently, can Spin) to cover Heatran and open up the Defogger/Zapdos slot for a wallbreaker who can still check Pinsir and Talon okay. Unfortunately, that's pretty tough, but I would honestly just ignore BirdSpam entirely--it's not common at all right now, and LandT, while very shaky, can check it well enough (and Pinsir struggles to set up on anything else). With that, wallbreaking choices are limited since the best ones are Mega wallbreakers, but maybe you could try CB Azumarill? It gives priority and has good defensive utility, and it's nice to U-turn in. I don't know exactly how that final product would look, but the big thing I want to emphasize is that I think Zapdos is a very inefficient choice in this meta and replacing it will help your team a lot.

Archer99: Actually, you have pretty much the same problem: Heatran is running wild against this build, and Starmie is very easily worn down by a few Lava Plumes, Earth Powers, or Toxics, even with Natural Cure and decent bulk. BU Talon is really good vs. stall but needs a little help as well, again from Heatran. With that in mind, a cool option might be to try Earthquake over Draco on Altaria to lure it a little, but it's not going to come close to OHKOing and you really have to go for the kill on it, so IDK. I think the slot to look at in the fix would be Clefable over Bisharp. I don't like Bisharp a whole lot here for some reason, but I think Keldeo might be solid in its spot (SubMind or Specs) as a way to pressures defensive builds and balance while giving you a decent Heatran check and more offense. This opens you up to MMeta a fair amount, but Land can hold it off and Talon can RK it, though you'll be pretty weak to it regardless. (Of course, MMeta is pretty insane, so whatever.) There is also the problem of Raikou/MegaManec being more troublesome, so it Keld may be more trouble than it's worth. I apologize for struggling to come up with a solution. You could always just run a bulkier Starmie which can then hold off Tran way easier, though you'll be fairly stall weak. The more I look at Bisharp, the more I get its place since it is a nice offensive check to a few things mentioned before. I'll get back to you if I think of something else, but hopefully there are ideas hidden in here somewhere.

AmourPearlShipper: I think you should be able to vote for yourself if you think your team is the best, but if it gets abused, I'll add it.

Anyway, cool team--I really dig the hipster balance build, and the Heracross is a unique touch that I can see helping a lot vs. balance and maybe even stall. The change I'd make is Rhyperior. Mega Pinsir is nowhere to be seen right now and ScarfTar can RK if just fine. I would run LO+3 Atks Latios in its place (while running SR on Jirachi, even though that can admittedly get dicey) since you have enormous problems with Landorus and Keldeo (don't wanna risk an Altaria burn on that post-MEvo) and it handles both well while providing a nice offensive presence. It can also RK Mega Heracross who can break you down pretty badly. In any case, I'd say Land/Keld are way more important threats than Mega Pinsir. Admittedly softens you up against Talon a lot but that can be pressured a little easier at least with inferior bulk and sand/rox weakness.

Zekrom: IDK why you're running Blissey when Tenta/Conk handle it okay at least, though I suppose it's defensible. I think one thing you could do is keep Blissey on for Gar and run Chesnaught over Conk, which provides you with more insurance vs. SubMind Keld and can set up Spikes, which even minus a SpinBlocker can be very useful. (It helps that Exca doesn't want to spin on it.) I don't have a ton else to say. It's pretty MHera weak but he's not as common anymore, though the more common MMeta can threaten you if its coverage moves are EQ/Ice Punch (though that's uncommon, iirc?). I'll probably have more to say after mulling it over some more, but yeah, nice submission.

And nice submissions everyone. Fun to see some already!

this is theorymon, but between jirachi, keldeo, mega alt and hera i can handle keldeo, whether specs, scarf or subcm. if it switches into rhyperior i'd probably go to jirachi since it will likely go for the scald, while if it catches tyranitar, will likely go to hera or even mega alt if i feel like it. (of course, predictions are a thing but still). even ttar can deal decent damage with superpower.
manaphy can handle lando-i with wish support (and btw jirachi can tank an earth power), while t-tar and heracross (is psychic lando-i still popular?) deal heavy damage to it.

i really don't want to have two members weak to pursuit. mega aero, which is popular in high level play, would also buttfuck this team, especially when paired with rotom-w.

But then again, I don't really know how would my team handle Lando and Keldeo in practice. I've tested it and right now I have a rating of about 1420. But I don't think that's enough.

Strategy

Spoiler:
I began with Altaria and Jirachi as per the rules of the competition, I opted for the Special Attacker altaria set, the DD variant has to choose between being walled by Ferrothorn or Heatran, which are two of the most common Pokemon in the metagame; I didn't want that. I invested enough speed for Altaria to outrun max speed belly drum azumarill, and used the rest to pad its Special Attacker as well as its defensive bulk, given that it will be switching into Pokemon like Keldeo and Rotom-W frequently, given that those Pokemon's typings give them a lot of opportunities to come in and attack. I opted for specially defensive jirachi here, I think scarf might be a very good alternative, but ultimately I have my defensive core to rely on, and Tornadus-Therian is already a speedy Pokemon; the team would have to beat clefable by Suicune critting it in a CM war if I ran scarf, since that set can be easily weakened. Not the best answer to such a common threat since Clefable has reliable recovery [so more chances to attack and crit], with some running stored power. Fire Punch can work over Body Slam but I would probably have to change to 112+Def/144 Sdef or a similar mixed wall thread on hippowdon so Thundurus doesnt become a threat to the team. Anyways after the main core, I thought in terms of frameworks and remembered how many times I had seen a water paired with those two. In the metagame there are 4 water types right now that are able to break apart balanced/stall cores; Crawdaunt, SubCM Keldeo, Suicune and Manaphy. Crawdaunt on balance has been done before but even with so many potential users of U-Turn I feel like it isn't a great fit, as the burden falls on the rest of the team to support it defensively. Keldeo and Manaphy are interesting, but the keldeo-altaria-jirachi has been done the most, and I liked having Suicune to fall back on due to its bulk, so I could have an answer in a pinch to a lot of powerful threats.

At this point in teambuilding I usually just consider the strongest sweepers in the metagame and if I can beat them; as it stood Mega Charizard-X was a pretty big threat, so I fell back on old reliable Hippowdon. I usually run mixed wall but I feel this team could afford to run max def since Jirachi and Altaria are already specially bulky; this would give me more insurance vs Charizard-X, Bisharp, Metagross-Mega, etc. Stone Edge is there to beat Mega Pinsir and Talonflame 1 on 1, Whirlwind is an option too I guess. I struggled with the fifth slot a lot, I wasn't terribly weak to Azumarill but I wasn't a huge fan of its ability to get chip damage on my team. Suicune needs a scald burn to beat it and Jirachi struggles to beat it 1 on 1 [252+ Atk Huge Power Azumarill Waterfall vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Jirachi: 159-187 (39.3 - 46.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery, 252+ Atk Huge Power Azumarill Knock Off vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Jirachi (No Item): 172-204 (42.5 - 50.4%) -- 1.2% chance to 2HKO] while losing to CB versions, it can't switch in on Knock Off either, as it does around 70% while Jirachi has an item.

Next I wanted the team to have both hazard control and a way of beating Azumarill, as well as a secondary answer to Rotom-W just because it's annoying. I tried Celebi first, it would have been a decent fit but it can't defog, Mew could work too, but eventually I found my best option in Zapdos, which allows me to not only take on Azumarill, but threatening Pokemon like Mega-Pinsir and Mega-Scizor as well, while giving me the hazard control I wanted with Defog. The 6th slot was originally a hawlucha to further break cores, but I looked through the viability rankings and noticed that I was still decently weak against Gengar, Landorus and Mega Gallade. Luckily there's a Pokemon with a 70% chance to beat all 3 [I need hurricane for the power to KO gallade but this move is horrible]. Assault Vest Tornadus allowed me to give the team its much needed speed and take on these three threats, Timid so I don't have to sacrifice its defensive capabilities, Knock Off hits what it needs to hard enough and it has respectable base 100 attack anyways.

Explanation:

Spoiler:
So fair warning, I've barely tested this but I wanted to throw it in before the deadline, so it's pretty much garbage. ANYWAYS, Jirachi and Altaria have great defensive synergy, so I decided to build around that and go for a more semi-stall/balanced approach. I decided to use Defensive Pivot M-Altaria, as any semi-stall team loves a cleric, so being able to absorb status pre-mega and use Heal Bell are fantastic. Jirachi I decided to use as a Wish passer to spread health around, with Body Slam to spread paralysis around, and U-turn if I want to get momentum.

The next obvious step in semi-stall is hazards. I knew I wanted to run Spikes and Stealth Rock. I figured Stealth Rock was more important, so I threw Hippowdon in there. It sets my rocks, gets some passive damage up with sand, and phazes with Whirlwind. Plus Zard-X destroys the Altaria/Jirachi core so it's cute with Slack Off. It works well with Ferrothorn, which sets up my Spikes, with Leech Seed forcing switches and racking up residual damage.

My next thought was taking hazards off my side, since they annoy my team so far. I didn't really want to use Defog and remove my hazards, so I settled on Spinning them away. Pretty much the only two good spinners are Excadrill and Starmie. As much as Excadrill loves the sand, I went with Starmie since it helps with the Fighting and Fire types that kinda hurt me (minus Altaria). Max HP and Speed for bulk and ability to spin fast, plus STABs for coverage against what's hurting me.

My last thought is how bulky waters crap on me, so I wanted something to help that. Thundurus is cute, and running a Mixed set with Defiant punishes people trying to Defog me.

tl;dr awful and in a rush

Strategy
Spoiler:
Landorus for a good speed lead and pivoting prowess complimented by his Intimidate and teammate Rotom-Wash can turn it right back to him with Volt Switch. Heatran has great synergy with Rotom-Wash, they cover each other's weaknesses fairly well. I prefer both sets with Calm because of Will-O-Wisp on Rotom-Wash. Heatran absorbs Jirachi's Fire weakness as and floats over ground as long as balloon is up. Levitate on Rotom-Wash and Flying Landorus-Therian are helpful in that department as well. I went with a Defensive Cleric on Altaira-Mega and tried an Special Defensive Jirachi with Assault Vest and he has plenty of secondary effects and coverage for his Serene Grace. Possibly considering Drain Punch. And Gothitelle for revenge killing and some needed Special Attacking power.

oh yeah, no more submissions, but yall are free to discuss, edit, etc. the ones currently there over the next few days before we start the vote :)

also, apologies if the core was a little difficult to build around. will be more deliberate next time. (i test ran it myself and found the build v challenging)

Anti January 16th, 2015 10:05 AM

alright everyone can vote, just post the username of the person whose team you think should win (criteria are in the op)

gl everyone!

KorpiklaaniVodka January 16th, 2015 10:38 AM

myself lol

I hate how most of our teams get wrecked by pretty much stallbreaker not named Mega Gardy/Gallade... and Archer's team doesn't have that much offensive presence. I'll give my vote to Zekrom, as I really don't want to vote for myself.

champagnepapi January 17th, 2015 9:24 AM

i like jake's team best, cool team structure although i am not sure about the thundurus

srinator January 17th, 2015 10:43 PM

I vote for elf
I think I shall vote for Exile's team.

Nah January 18th, 2015 5:20 AM

Could use another vote in here.....I guess I'll vote for.....Yoshikko's team.

Yoshikko January 18th, 2015 6:00 AM

My vote goes to AmourPearlShipper!! Gl everyone

KorpiklaaniVodka January 18th, 2015 12:14 PM

... wait, I just realized Exile's Altaria doesn't have 510 EVs while Jirachi uses a -atk nature (?!) despite using physical attacks.

late vote ahhh

voting for exile

Zeffy January 22nd, 2015 5:19 AM

if i may vote, i'm voting for jake. i like how he swayed towards a more defensive style--which is how i would personally utilize jirachi and mega altaria given their amazing synergy.

Tallies of the votes so far (including mine):

Exile - 3 votes
AmourPearlShipper, Jake♫ - 2 votes
Zekrom, , Yoshikko - 1 vote

Additionally, out of 8 participants, only 6 have cast their vote so far.

Anti January 23rd, 2015 3:57 AM

sorry for the delay, i can't seem to locate d_a or sweep or line up online times! next round we'll probably just do away with the panel, which has been rather cumbersome if i'm being honest, and just hold a vote, but for now i still gotta run into them haha. if i still can't in a day or two, i'll just call it based on the voting totals.

which i guess means i should cast my vote, which would be exile if put at gunpoint though i felt like there were plenty of solid ones.

Anti January 25th, 2015 7:23 AM

Well we (just D_A and myself, sorry Sweep where art thou) decided on a winner. Even after narrowing it somewhat it was a bit tricky but ultimately we decided that...

JAKE TAKES THE CAKE

grats br0

The panel is gone because it made everything take forever so it'll just be votes next time, and with that, the next round's core is...

I have Mega Sableye and Talonflame as the cores. Mega Sableye has a standard set with Calm Mind to utilize Prankster on the first turn, Dark Pulse and Shadow Ball for STAB and Recover to bring the beast back up! Talonflame has a Banded set as it has a great attack stat. It has Brave Bird, Flare Blitz for STAB and to utilize the high attack stat. It has Max Speed to outspeed things like Weavile, but then again there's Gale Wings. I have Excadrill as a Rapid Spinner and Rotom-W for a Water type with Will-O-Wisp to burn mons. I have Sylveon with Pixilate with Hyper Voice. And Gengar for Taunt to stop set-up Pokemon like Tyranitar and Skarmory.

Anyway, Good Luck to the other participants, and Vote for me if you find it interesting! Also, Feel free to use it! God Bless.

Talonflame and Mega Sableye form a great duo, both covering their weaknesses and Mega Sableye bouncing back SR, which is really detrimental to the Smogon bird.
Tentacruel is a reliable Rapid Spinner that also punishes CM sweepers, like Suicune and Keldeo.
Bronzong helps against Mega Gardy and [email protected] and sets up SR for the team.
Gliscor dispatches Heatran, Landorus-T and helps against Mega Metagross.
Kyurem-B is the revenge killer of the team and adds some offensive presence.

Spoiler: Explanation

Team kinda ended up being a defensive one again. Decided to go with a Bulk-Up Talonflame so it can actually sponge some Fairy hits for Mega Sableye, and it's pretty good anyway. Not sure about Taunt though. Sableye's running the standard Mega set. Next put Ferrothorn onto the team to cover Talonflame's weaknesses and as a backup Fairy block. Put in Slowbro to complete the Fire-Water-Grass core. Lando-T to set up rocks and deal with Electric attacks since Slowbro and Talonflame hate those. Threw in Conkeldurr to check Dark types have an additional priority move and stuff. Wonder if I should swap out Poison Jab or Knock Off though.

Admittedly the team's a little Magnezone weak....

Description:
Spoiler:

Well I am very well aware of my bad team building skills, dual birds just seemed super cool to me although the tea, was garb, this is not that good but better than he previous one and takes a more semi stall route? Idk lol. Anyway clefable and Sableye match great together and possible one of the most seen core on stall teams today. Rhyp is my bird spam check and possible the one that can kind of check Heatran unless of course it is the more offensive variant, This team actually does have problems against heatran and I would have loved to fin in mantine over talon, rofl. Exca is great, enough speed investments to outspeed the more common Rotom wash, and probably hope the guy thinks I am scarf? Lol kidding. But I think this set is great. Would have given it sr and lefties but I need to try that first. Ferro checks rain spam, kinda checks fairies although everything runs HP Fire, but hopefully people would see running something else over hp Fire on mega diancie is better and run zone with it, Ss helps to get out of there and bring in something like Rhyp after I scout with protect. I use talon as my late game sweep after the first 5 mons have done their jobs of weakening everything as much as possible and the rocks+spikes make talons life easier, exca also helps keep the hazards of the feild. So well that's it.

Dark Azelf February 7th, 2015 8:14 AM

Not trying to be an ass (which probs means im about to be) but there is quite alot of foe birdspam weak teams being posted. That and the defensive structure is questionable in regards to basically to every common boosting or powerful sweeper. I know oras sucks and whatnot but slow teams with bad defensive structures are a no go. Obviously this doesnt apply to all teams posted but its something to go over because it DOES influence who wins and who loses in this, so it would probably be advisable to take note of common threats a little better. But thats http://cbc.pokecommunity.com/config/emoticons/kermit.png none of my business. ;)

Anti February 7th, 2015 8:43 AM

yeah so uhhh maybe in the spirit of being a wee bit more constructive i'd say that adding serp because you're "spore bait" is super paranoid of breloom (u have mega sableye m8 lol) and while it helps with bro/cune i might consider other mons for that. since latios gets a kill every time it comes in (you have no steel or fairy) i would strongly consider azumarill or clefable or something to help with that. cm unaware clef over serp would be much more defensively sound, for example. though since you're an offense team, i also think azumarill is a decent idea and is much less of a tempo killer.

it's just rly difficult to build a solid defensive unit when you're running liabilities like staraptor serp and mamo so i'd bulk it up a bit esp since you dont have quite enough immediate power to make the tradeoff worth it

Detox February 7th, 2015 3:19 PM

I wasn't really vibing well with Sableye (or the fact that this turned out to be a stall team, and a M-Sableye one at that), but I couldn't find a way to flip this into anything offensive. The closest I got was balance. So, if the team sucks, that's why. I haven't built a stall team since Flygon was actually a threat in OU. Well, I did what I could. Here's the squad.

Here's the explanation.
Spoiler:

Already knowing what my core would be, I immediately started looking for ways to make them as effective as possible. I decided to run bulky utility on M-Sableye and a special defensive Swords Dance set on Talonflame. Blah blah they have synergy and all of that, this has been stated several times in this thread and I don’t really need to say that again lol. I chose the Talonflame set I did because I’m a fan of how it can set up on or force out a few notable things, but the main one is opposing Mega Sableye. It can also act as a pseudo-revenge killer if needed, but more often than not that hasn’t been needed.

Sableye’s job is to deter those who want to fling around entry hazards or status as if they were Oprah Winfrey giving out prizes on an episode of one of her TV Shows. Knock Off is fun because people usually expect the Calm Mind set and switch to the appropriate check or counter, only for its item to be slapped clean off. I play a lot of mind games with this thing, and I only mega evolve it at the appropriate time. I usually try to throw around a few burns, but if that isn’t needed then I just get right to the nitty gritty and evolve it to do its job. The rest of the set is fairly obvious, Recover is there for longevity purposes and Foul Play helps it not be setup bait to things like Char-X and Talonflame who love to switch in.

Now, I knew I needed something to setup rocks. I also knew that bird spam was still a thing and I didn’t want to end up being ravaged by a Pinsir or Talonflame. Going through all the available options, Rhyperior stood out as an excellent user of Stealth Rock and deterrent to our bird overlords. The set is bog standard and copied directly from Smogon’s PokéDex, but that is okay. It does what it needs to very well and I have no complaints. I run Toxic > Ice Punch because Slowbro loves to switch in on my guy, and what better way to get the early jump on CM MegaBro variants than to lure then in and poison them? Most of the things Ice Punch would hit hard (Gliscor, Garchomp, Dragonite Etc.) are of no real concern to me, so I didn’t feel as if Ice Punch was needed.

Slowbro is one of my favorite Pokémon nowadays and I plug him in on most any team if I can, whether it be as a late game win condition or as a physical wall, the latter being what I use him as here. Slowbro is a lovely check to Mega Metagross and Keldeo, though I usually scout the hidden power type of Keldeo before switching in. I have to be wary of Grass Knot on MegaGross, but for some reason that seems to be uncommon. I’m not complaining. Anyways yeah, he’s bulky and besides walling those two, he can serve as a nice backup check to a lot of things.

I forgot what I originally had in the spot of Clefable, it might have been CB Azumarill, but that wasn’t really working for me. Clefable provides much needed wish support and an answer to most setup sweepers. A big reason I added this guy in is because he allows me some wiggle room when it comes to playing around Mega Gyarados, but after its paralyzed I can relax a bit and knock it out with Moonblast, or at least force the switch. I have to be careful because remembering that Clefable is bulky but not really is key, and the amount of powerful attacks it can take is actually about 3 or 4 lol.

Woo boy, this is the only slot that has given me any sort of problems, but even then they are miniscule. Latios is a nice revenge killer, and while I wouldn’t have dared used this before, it actually works out quite nicely. Trick is fun because it lets me create setup bait out of things like Chansey and Ferrothorn who oh so commonly switch in. It also serves as my primary method of hazard removal, but considering I have M-Sableye and I know how to play it, Defog is often not needed. I’ve used it maybe 3 times, idk.

But yeah, that’s the team. I think the synergy could be better, but I also feel as if I did a good job checking some of the most common threats in OU and to stall. Will edit post if I make any changes.

Yh get a room you two, anyway changed the team in my last post probably not as ass as before but oh well. Just mentioning, I would mark the changes in red but then the whole thing would be red. Hope I'm not too late for this.

Syndrome

team is all kinds of stall weak but they all kind of were so this gets my vote for being solid all-around. only real critique is half of the team is really easy to wear down or pressure but talon and sab themselves can struggle w/ that and seeing as that was the core, yolo. i felt like uniqueness was mostly a wash and this seemed to be the best team so it gets my vote. gj all

KorpiklaaniVodka February 11th, 2015 5:02 AM

I'm going to go ahead and vote for Yoshikko. His team has a really good core in Jirachi, Talonflame, Sableye and Clef. Could use better EV spreads, though. (I guess my implementation of Kyurem-B on semi-stall was really bad.)

Also, what about MMeta?

Detox February 11th, 2015 6:25 PM

probably a water type like starmie to go along with that starm/talon/sab/clef framework; the team is kind of weak to keldeo. i'd also maybe limit it to one fire type but i think the team has potential

hm okay yeah that makes sense i will probably do starmie then (obvs can't change it now anymore but i do plan on using this so i'll work on it!) thanks!!

Hmm, I was planning to tally up the votes and decide the winner, but King Syn and Yoshikko are tied. I'll decide who wins tomorrow when I'm not so tired. Possibly with Dark Azelf since Anti is currently away.

edit: Ahh I need to decide on a core brb.

punkysaur February 19th, 2015 1:29 AM

I have seen very less teams built around m-garde and metagross. If you like you can set them as the next polls two pokemon.I am saying this because I have seen only 1/2 people with both on their teams(Lol.I might be wrong. But still)

wolf February 22nd, 2015 7:14 PM

I'm really sorry for holding this out for so long. It won't happen again. I'm going to give the win to King Syn's team for reasons stated before. Yoshikko's team has problems with Keldeo's Scald spam. Though, Mega Diancie tears into Syn's team really easily. It also gets free switch-ins from Latios. However, Keldeo is a more relevant threat and all teams should have a reliable way of dealing with it.

There were requests for a core that doesn't include a Mega. However, I might consider going with Mega Gardevoir and Metagross in the future.

THE NEXT CORE IS...

DUAL GENIES. No Therian formes. Have fun pummeling your opponents to death, folks.

Hmmm this will be a struggle for me ill have to go more offensively than ive ever done.

4 walls and 2 genies sounds good to me.

Spoiler: Importable+Terrible reasoning

Thundurus (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 76 Atk / 180 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Superpower
- Knock Off
- Hidden Power [Ice]

Usually when they're used by themselves the genies run a specially based set but when you run both on the same team it's kinda pointless to do that, so I made Thundurus a mixed attacker. While you lose Prankster it's still got pretty good speed and can lure in and destroy Chansey which is nice. Defiant's good when there's plenty of Intimidate and Defog in OU.

Azumarill @ Choice Band
Ability: Huge Power
EVs: 172 HP / 252 Atk / 84 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Aqua Jet
- Play Rough
- Knock Off
- Superpower

Since both genies are Ice weak its kinda mandatory to run something that resists Ice, and Azumarill does that while also resisting other stuff (especially Water and Dragon) and bringing priority as well. Choice Band for greater power without needing to set up Belly Drum.

Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 248 HP / 192 SpD / 68 Spe
Calm Nature
- Lava Plume
- Stealth Rock
- Earth Power
- Toxic

Heatran absorbs WoW and Toxic nicely and sets up much needed rocks for the team. Adds and additional Ice resist while also resisting Grass and Fairy 4x, and since half the team is Ground immune that's nice. Though despite that I'm thinking about whether or not I should give it a Balloon and/or do a more offensive rocks set.

Landorus (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Earth Power
- Focus Blast
- Calm Mind
- Psychic

Had Lando do it's usual CM role, which works nicely. The Sp.Def boost CM gives is nice, and Lando provides an Electric immunity to boot. Hard to choose between Psychic and Sludge Wave though....

Latios (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Psyshock
- Defog
- Hidden Power [Fire]

This thing is stupidly common but I needed a Defogger and couldn't really think of anything else that would fit since most of the other spinners/defoggers would just stack weaknesses, although Latios is Ice weak too. But at least there's the 3rd Ground immunity and it can lure in and destroy Scizor/Ferrothorn with HP Fire. Also completes a little Dragon/Fairy/Steel core with Azu+Tran.

Lopunny (F) @ Lopunnite
Ability: Limber
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- High Jump Kick
- Return
- Ice Punch
- Fake Out

Usually at the end of team building I start running out of ideas but since there's no mandatory mega this time I can use whatever mega I want so I went with Mega Lopunny. I think it provides some offensive coverage I needed.....

Most of 'em run Healing Wish but I was like eh fuck that let's use Fake Out to safely mega evolve and get free damage whenever it switches in.

thundurus and landorus form an excellent attacking core: thundurus can stop late-game sweeps and clean-ups as well as 2hko chansey and ttar. lando has the ability to sweep offense teams at late-game. latias checks keldeo and provides healing wish support. m-blastoise is a rapid spinner that can easily threaten ferro and mega scizor and get superb coverage in three moves. tran sets up rocks and acts as a great stallbreaker. bisharp pressures defog and is the team's check to [email protected]

Description
Spoiler:
The core given was dual genies, for me it is way more offensive than what I am used to so I went ahead and made what I think is a HO team. I didnt want to use cm land because it is pretty easy for it to get rk'd so i went with a full out attacking set since it p much threats most common stuff in ou rn like gliscor/lando/ferrothorn/clef etc. I do miss psychic but i think the current move set is the most versatile it can get. Since this was a more offensive team i thought about having a mechanism that would allow me to get in stuff easily to start bombing the opponent and band scizor does this just fine alongside thundurus. Band Scizor is also p good rn since bullet punch hits really hard against common stuff like lando t or even mega loppunny which if i am not mistaken is or was for some reason s ranked ( -1 band scizor does around 40 to lando t while it does around 70 to lop) . next i added something for latis since i was p weak to them esp if the hidden fire sets ( they are pretty much present on every team hard to ignore etc) and also priority ice or in general ice attacks. so i added in azumaril. I tried banded azu but i think ass vest is overall better for this since i really like picking off weakened threats with aqua jet after having smashed it while the opponent switches something in with a more powerful stab. I realised i needed some kind of win-con that could set up late game, i needed something really solid that could take out a large portion of the meta game and mega zard x popped into my mind. I went with the bulky dragon dance set sine it is easier to set up on stuff. In the end i added latias to really complete the team, since i am p stealth rock and opposing mega zard's weak. I don't have a stealth rock user so I slashed it with lando. I know rocks are what every team should have etc but eh.

changes in bold.

Mega Pidgeot and Garchomp form a good core that beats a large portion of the OU metagame.
Thundurus is here to destroy [email protected], bulky waters and stop sweepers.
Celebi and Excadrill support the team with Stealth Rock and Rapid Spin.
Talonflame is the mid-game sweeper of the team, as well as a great lure to Rotom-W and Mega Gyarados, which otherwise are huge threats to this team.

Kind of a different take with a bulky team, Garchomp plus the FWG defensive core is there to take on a lot of the metagame. Slowbro was the first added since the core we were given doesn't like switching into Keldeo and is outright beaten by Charizard-X at +1. From there Tangrowth and Heatran were added to check other big threats in the game like Clefable, Gyarados, Bisharp, etc. Heatran is also nice for potentially allowing me to chip Rotom-W with burn or toxic so that Pidgeot can do more damage, same with Slowbro. I chose the Work Up set on Pidgeot, with enough speed for Tornadus-T as it's a cool balance breaker right now. CM Landorus was added as the teams final member and stallbreaker, it acts as an auxiliary to Pidgeot by weakening Rotom-W and taking advantage of Pokemon like Tyranitar that Pidgeot can't beat.

Team building process-
Spoiler:

The given core was Garchomp and Mega Pidgeot, and although it hints towards a hyper offense style, I went for a balanced (I am not sure) team. I knew Mega Pidgeot runs U-turn most of the time and I wanted to abuse this a bit by forming a volt turn core in the team. I didn't use Scizor because then I get walled by Mega Pidgeots most famous counter in Heatran, and I anyway wanted to use Jirachi to stop fairies from tearing away at me. so I went with Rotom-Wash and Jirachi since I always kind of struggle with talon, and it gives me momentum in volt switch. the EV's on Rotom ensure I don't get 5hko'd by Talon ( this was so that I can be sure I can take SD variants which have set up as well) while giving it a bit of special bulk. Chomp's ev's may seem weird but it allows me to out speed max speed which have a base speed of 77 or less (lol heatran), and the SpDef investment allow me to survive 2 fire blast's from mega zard y to phaze it out and get more rocks damage. mew is my stall breaker and can also act as a hazard remover ( but I don't use defog much so I slashed it in). and finally to cover and finish my team i added hippo that helps me against things like megazard x etc.

EDIT: I apologize for my insensitivity. I have decided to include a TRIGGER WARNING for users Archer99 and static. I'm happy to have a prayer circle with you guys or something.

LET'S GET TO IT:

wow, shout-outs to mega pidgeot. some call him bird Jesus, but i think most of u know him as ur worst nightmare. bow down to the lord himself, for only one mega pokemon is worthy of our lord and savior's name, and here he is in all his glory. just click hurricane the rest doesn't matter. i would have gone with work up or something but hey, i just took this straight out of the mega pidgeot all-stars. have you ever heard the saying "if it aint broke don't fix it"? bingo welcome to this pidgeot set. i even have uturn for #momentum even though hurricane is all the momentum you need, especially when you bs through someone with the confusion chance LOL. truly a legend pokemon, few trainers exhibit the mastery needed to click its stab move and bulldoze through the various hyper offense builds on our server that don't prep for it despite its majesty. i love you mega pidgeot, even more thank drunk gloom.

Garchomp @ Life Orb

decided to go really aggressive with the chomp to get some early damage. it blows the doors down on clefable:

252 Atk Life Orb Garchomp Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 160 Def Clefable: 226-266 (57.3 - 67.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

i've had trouble with the last moveslot. swords dance puts a ton of pressure on the opponent and can break down defensive cores (a lot of slow builds built around stopping stuff like m-meta aren't super well equipped to take lo sd boosted stab attacks) but fire blast has more utility against hazard-setting steel-types and chesnaught. without spin/defog support, i opted for the latter.

simply amazing offensive synergy with pidgeot, even though it opens up the manectric weakness a bit. tyranitar and heatran want nothing to do with this thing and it can easily weaken rotom-w into pidgeot kill range. it also puts pressure on chansey. i can't say i'm thrilled that this is my main stall breaker but hey, with bisharp and chomp/pidg it can tag-team some stuff. went for specs because the immediate power is rly nice and having used submind a lot, i feel like the metagame has adapted to it pretty well and its inability to hit hard until boosted can make it a liability in certain match-ups. :/

idk wtf this is tbh but i use clef on like, all of my teams lol. i opted for a bit of a glue build here where it acts as a decent stop to physical attackers. was insanely talon weak and this lures it well, though tbolt's utility is pretty barren outside of that. status absorption is rly nice and can at least absorb non choice locked volt switches without dying in three seconds. :(

eh these last two slots suck and i'll change them if i have time, but i noticed weaknesses to diancie/m-bro/manaphy (really the usual suspects for the types of teams i like running) and also needed another ground immune/resist so i tossed this guy on. thunder wave is as an emergency stop against a few things i'm pretty poorly prepared for (can maim a torn-t or m-meta or w/e) though idk i might go with a nastypass since keld and pidg would love that!

mostly just here to provide added offensive pressure vs. stall/semistall while acting as further protection from the latis. also checks clefable who i am pretty weak to haha. i'll make these last couple slots more efficient if i don't run out of time.

but let's be real. you're not here to see some bulky offense squad i threw together. i have better entries for this competition.

for the uu ladder race, i made some insanely stall weak voltturn (literally no wallbreakers LOL) that went 15-0 before i stopped playing since i had locked up the #1 seed. (btw will get around to my match vs. elf in that eventually LOL #kingjohn) anyway, once raikou and jirachi rose to ou i needed a new squad. turns out this is a terrible uu team but it has revolutionized the ou metagame with innovations like "anti as its user" and "mega pidgeot." so BEHOLD THE MEGA PIDGEOT ALL-STARS:

no garchomp? yeah whatever pidg has beaten too many of those to care for your petty restrictions.

don't believe me? as per the request in the op, i shall provide replays exhibiting this team's greatness:

some hilarious gimmicks on this squad, hw shaymin gets 'em every time and the bronzong makes me weep tears of joy.

i have even more replays showcasing the devilish nature of this squad:

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/pokecommunity-ou-154886: oof
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/pokecommunity-ou-154779: pidgeot gets 5 kills man what a legend
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/pokecommunity-ou-147996: a rare defeat and some possible chokin' down the stretch but yolo. even the great d_a is pushed to the brink
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/pokecommunity-ou-145879: ROFL

wow, i am but a mere peasant compared to m-pidg ^_^

SO, i enter all three teams into this competition. while the final two are ineligible, i hope you consider their impact on the metagame and admire their presence and their creator.

furthermore, consider this post a FINAL TEAM RETIREMENT of the mega pidgeot allstars, both v1 and v2. they have served me well, and they shall be missed. may pidgeot rest in peace...

Nah April 12th, 2015 9:40 AM

Anti you forgot to include the replay where I beat the UU version

Why're you retiring the teams already though?

Yoshikko May 2nd, 2015 6:56 AM

WOLF DONT FORGET THIS ONE!!

wolf May 2nd, 2015 12:04 PM

YES SORRY. I've been pushing this off so I could complete my team. :x Give me a moment.

Time to vote.

Post the username of your preferred winner, along with a reason why (optional). Please read the criteria:

Quote:

When voting, consider the criteria that the panel will be using: viability (is the team good?), creativity (does it stray from standard builds?), and synergy (is there evidence of thoughtful team building?).

Yoshikko May 3rd, 2015 6:29 AM

omfg......wolf x)

i vote for....anti's uu team...

srinator May 3rd, 2015 6:41 AM

anti's uu team does not have chomp x)

i shall vote for anti

Nah May 9th, 2015 2:33 PM

was reminded to vote on this

If Anti's team is eligible for this, then I vote for that. If not, then Exile's team

Zeffy May 9th, 2015 6:14 PM

anti's uu team doesn't count so I'm gonna vote for his OU team 8)

although I think I should mention gloom's team is pretty good as well

Detox May 9th, 2015 9:49 PM

Gonna vote for Exile. Play tested the squad and it's pretty solid; Work Up Pidgeot is cool and apparently not a lot of people expect it so it can snag a lot of free KO's.

Zeffy June 30th, 2015 9:23 AM

Sorry for the really delayed results everyone, but a quick tally of the results shows that Anti has won! (As if it wasn't obvious enough, that core was pretty much made by him!) Anyway, the next round probably wouldn't come until after the get-together finishes, so see you by then!

Of course, if anyone wants to host this for a couple of rounds, feel free to contact me! Alternatively, you can post on the Events & Groups Approvals forum so we can discuss specifics in a better way. :)
