Nintendo focusing on other titles beside mario this year. Good? Bad? The future?
Miyamoto has stated recently that there are no new core mario games this year. Obviously though maio maker is coming and mario party ten. So my question is, what do you think of this? Good or bad? Do you think it will help change their image from just mario, more? I Think this will be a good thing, and help them delvelop other franchises in their lineup and allow them to have more creative with future mario games. Your thoughts?

HURRAH
I honestly despise Mario - not because it's a lame series, as most of the games are really good fun, but for the fact Nintendo seem to milk it. Like, realistically most of the Mario games are small rehashes of one another on a new console/slightly different graphics. There's also the ridiculously slow decline in the price of Mario games ;-; some are near full price despite being years old! /cry |
I'm a little disappointed, but not surprised. I think we'll see a new one next year, perhaps for the New 3DS? Either way, there's no lack of Mario games this year, with Mario Maker, Mario Party 10 and Mario vs. Donkey Kong Wii U all due out at some point during 2015.
|
I'm glad to see Nintendo trying some new things instead of dwelling on the ones that they already have. I think that it could be a good year for Nintendo, but it could also be a disaster. We will see, I suppose.
|
Yes its only natural the Mario franchise has had plenty of releases over the last few years.
I suspect Nintendo will be focusing on Zelda this year. |
It is good to have other focus. I do think mario is getting to milked atm as well. I hope that most focus goes to making splatoon, project guard and giant robot, Codenake steam, and whatever other new ips they may be planning. I also hope this interview mean f zero could potentially be revived. I would love to see that in HD. And i agree that zelda will be a big focus with zelda u and MM3d coming out, maybe even star fox as well.
|
Hopefully that will give them time to actually develop something new.
|
I feel like they've rushed, or rather pumped out too many Mario games in the past couple of years. It will be good to see them focusing on other titles and franchises and I'm interested to see what approach they take for this year.
|
If by 'core' Mario game you mean the 3D platformers, then this is normal. There's only been 2 3D Mario platformers this generation, and they're Super Mario 3d Land and Super Mario 3d World, which are on two different consoles. The Wii generation saw 2 3D Mario platformers in Super Mario Galaxy 1+2, both on Wii. Gamecube only saw 1 in Mario Sunshine. I don't think the 3d Mario is being milked to be honest. Maybe the Mario name in general, but most games are so different can you really just label them all as 'Mario' games?
For example, Super Mario 3D World is a 3D platformer, while Mario Tennis is a sports game. They're completely different genres, and Mario Tennis could be any old tennis game, they just slapped Mario's name on it because he's pretty much their mascot. The New Super Mario Bros. series is a 2D platformer and plays differently to the 3D Marios, and pretty much all other Mario games that aren't in the same style. And there's one per console. I think it seems like Mario games are getting milked more than they are because Nintendo are putting out both consoles and handhelds and naturally having flagship Mario games on both, but also throwing Mario's name on any old sports, racing, and party game that they can. The real core Mario games aren't being run into the ground in my opinion. |
It's about time. That explains why the only Mario game we're getting this year so far is Mario Maker. Though it is weird considering it's the 30th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. You'd think they would do something more grand for Mario.
|
Since Mario tends to be everywhere nowadays, and I'm glad that they're focusing on something different this time around.

While surprising, i am quite happy with mario maker as it can support it'self for years to come and has been something wanted by fans for years. I really like the looks of it and there seem be no boundarys. Maybe it will lead to things like zelda maker, when it succeeds as it seems to have become quite popular already, and should sell well. But there is also talks of an animated mario movie, through those leaked sony emails but that may or may not come to light but if it does maybe the movie will be for the anniversary? |
As fun as Mario is this is pretty good. We could go a few years without Mario. maybe some news ips :)
|
Ah, the old argument of Mario games being milked...
Here are the recent core console releases: 2006 - NOTHING 2007 - Super Mario Galaxy (platformer) 2008 - NOTHING 2009 - New Super Mario Bros. Wii (sidescroller) 2010 - Super Mario Galaxy 2 (platformer) 2011 - NOTHING 2012 - New Super Mario Bros. U (sidescroller) 2013 - Super Mario 3D World (platformer) 2014 - NOTHING 2015 - NOTHING Three main serieses with two or three years between each. I think that's a pretty good balance Nintendo had a good 2014 I think, without a major Mario release. Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart, Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 1 & 2, Captain Toad. And 2015 is shaping up to be great too - Splatoon, Kirby, Yoshi, Star Fox, Mario Maker, etc. So... everything is good |

What about new super mario bros 2 for 3ds, with all the coins? Wasn't that 2011 or 2012? I consider that main series to. But that in its's self could be debated as to whatever or not it really is. As for the rest of the timeline it seems to be fine and correct. |
If you count the NSMB series as mainline, then there are two mainline series going at the same time. But looking at the 3D games..
Galaxy 1 was in 2007. The next one was Galaxy 2 in 2010. That's three years between 2 mainline 3d titles. The next one was a year later, but was on 3ds. The next console one was another 3 years later than Galaxy 2. The only time where they really like bleeding Mario dry is with the NSMB series. NSMB2 and NSMBU both came out in the same year. If you consider the NSMB series as core Mario, then in that regard it may have been a little excessive. But I guess the excuse for that was that they wanted a NSMB game on each console, and the 3DS and Wii U releases happened to be very close together. The actual 3D Mario games are not being milked and have quite a large amount of time between each one, with the exception of Super Mario 3D Land. |
Truth is Mario is not needed for 2015. Splatoon,Devil's Third,Star Fox,Zelda U,Xenoblade and possibly FE X SMT plus Mr.Miyamoto said new games will be shown at E3 we don't know about. Granted they may not be this year but it seems for 2015 they are good. If we could only get 3rd party support that would be icing on the donut.

I wouldn't mind as much as long as a ported Super Mario Galaxy 1 and/or 2 come to Wii U. Most likely not though. Oh well I'd love to see what amazing things will be release and revealed this year.

As for more mature games 'polluting' Nintendo's name.. I don't think Nintendo games can be summed up as a whole like that. Sure, you have the happy colourful sunshine and rainbow games, like Mario, Kirby etc, but there are also things like Metroid which are a little more on the mature side. It's evident that Nintendo are a little more reluctant to have 18-rated games on their systems, but Nintendo games as a whole cover a vast range of genres and age range targets, even if they do try to appeal to people of all ages. |

EDIT: Oh, oops. I had included 3D Land on that list XD That shouldn't have been there. *removes* Ignore me. No portables |
I'm fine with it. Nintendo has a bunch of other fantastic IPs like Zelda, Pokemon, Star Fox, and Splatoon's debuting this year as well. It's gonna be a great year for Nintendo, and Mario isn't sitting this one out even if he's not the main focus. We've still got Mario Maker and Mario Party 10, so he's not missing out on the action. It's gonna be an awesome year.
Edit: I remembered Xenoblade too and my face melted off. Oh, 2015, I love you already. |
I don't hate Mario, but I think he could use a break for a while. Let him have a real vacation in Isle Delfino (and not get caught up in adventure last time he was there). At his age, working him too hard will make him sprout grey hairs too early.
Have Nintendo give his other Nintendo star co-workers some glory for a bit, ya know? |
I think it's nice to see Nintendo not doing as much Mario games this year, since this can give its other major franchises the spotlight for a while. We'll wait and see if it was a successful move or not.

Nintendo released quite a few non-Mario titles that turned out to be successful, like Kirby and Zelda related ones, so if they try for more of that, then Mario might turn out to get something more creative or different after a while off from it. |
Being new to the Nintendo scene, I haven't grown tired of the mario games - purchasing three games for my 3ds so far. But I can see it as a good thing for Nintendo, instead of focusing on such a long running title as Mario, they can turn to new IPS, or other games that have laid dormant for so long. I think it's a breath of fresh air in the gaming community/industry whenever developers/publishers focus on something new for a change. Especially when you have sequels upon sequels being churned out for so many games - Xbox/Sony, I'm looking at you!

It seems like the Mario name is a little saturated, since they like to put him and his friends on anything they can to generate appeal. Without Mario, 'Mario Tennis' would be a pretty normal Nintendo tennis game. It's very easy to put Mario and co. on that to generate appeal for the games, and that's what they do, which leads to people getting bored of seeing Mario everywhere. |

It's like Treyarch/Infinity Ward with Call of Duty. They just pump these games out continuously because that's what Activision want and they don't really have anything else that would be a success. |

Yeah, I agree with you. I'm a big Pokemon fan myself, and I welcome more Pokemon games. I was just responding to the post addressing Sony/Microsoft for putting out too many sequels, which Nintendo/GameFreak do themselves.
It's perfectly understandable, I mean Pokemon is so huge and I have no doubt it could keep GameFreak alive and well for years to come, not to mention they're likely very passionate about the franchise since it is nearing the 20th anniversary and it's come so far, and they've built something really great with it. It's just so big that I think there is potential for GameFreak to funnel some of that success into something fresh, perhaps with a respectable budget behind it. |
And a smaller mario title has been announced:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0vIXnXoi6U Looks neat, may have to pick it up. |

Answer: Gamefreak took a gamble. |

And considering how much money they've made off of Pokemon over the years, I think they can afford to make a few gambles here and there. |
Quote:
I do agree, however. Gamefreak could afford to make a game that isn't Pokemon with minimal losses. |
Gamefreak definitely should take more gambles, nintendo can afford a ton of resources to make a brand cult classic for people of all ages from gamefreak. I would like to see them do something likw shovel knight in terms of a simple but good story and gameplay elements.
|
Personally, I see this as a bit of fresh air. Nintendo wondered why Wii U wasn't selling as good as they wanted aside from redundant console design. For a company such as Nintendo, they have so much potential in other series than a constant Mario theme. While I appreciate that Mario was Nintendo's claim to fame, repetition is annoying.

Nintendo owns The Pokémon Company though. And Creatures Inc.
Game Freak is a second-party software development partner. |
i think it's a good thing for Nintendo to branch out from mario to try other series, especially series they haven't touched for a while. In fact, i heard from a Gamexplain video that not only is Nintendo bringing back star fox from the dustbin of forgotten IPs, but that Miyamoto dropped a few hints that they might be working on a new F-Zero game as well, so we might get a chance to show people our moves

Well, I think this is good news and bad news for Mario fans, since it will give Nintendo more time to come up with something big. Considering the fact that many of the Mario games for the past 4-5 years or so have simply been rehashes, it's obvious they need a break, especially given how big SSB4 was last year.
On the upside, at least a new Zelda is coming out along with the 3DS remake of Majora's Mask, as well as a new Star Fox game. As for the Pokemon franchise, other than the recent revealing of Hoopa, nothing has been heard on what the next game will be, whether we will get the third Kalos game or if it will just be smaller spin-off games this year, since 2016 IS going to be the 20th anniversary of the franchise, so it's possible that something big is planned for then. Sad to say, not all news is good news, as Nintendo recently pulled out of the Brazilian market due to high import taxes. Sad day for Brazilian gamers indeed. |
Just personally I think the Wii U needs a super impressive 3D Mario game. 3D World was a bit of a letdown in my books. Not to say it wasn't a good game, but to me it basically felt like 3D Land but in HD. The game just feels like a series of obstacle courses given the lack of a overworld/hubworld (well a good one at least) and the timer and flagpole goals as opposed to the mission style goals of previous 3D Mario games.
To me Mario games work best when it feels like what you're watching is a window to another world. So what I look for is a cohesive world that makes sense. To me that's the foundation to which Mario was based on. In the original game Super Mario Bros, the first cutscene in the game is between 1-1 and 1-2. 1-1 is a standard on the ground level and 1-2 is an underground level, so between the two levels there is a cutscene showing Mario enter a pipe to go underground, which obviously make sense as opposed to him just magically starting the next level underground. So with that in mind I just found it disappointing that in Mario 3D World you have a silly 3D overworld which despite being 3D is essentially linear and you can go from a mountain to a desert to a snow level all in a couple of levels from each other. Despite world being in the title, it didn't feel like a world at all, just a series of obstacle courses. They were fun and wonderfully looking obstacle courses, but the game failed to capture my imagination at least. So I'm hoping for a real home run of a 3D Mario coming up for the Wii U, something more in line with Sunshine and the Galaxy series that makes use of the Wii U's impressive tech to where the gameworlds can be vast and intricate and just fun to hang out in and interact with. There's a lot of unexplored territory with the Wii U tech that they can do with the Mario series, and as much as I'd like to see that next great Mario game sooner rather than latter, hopefully this news means that they're taking extra care in ensuring the next installment will be a top of the line game. Sorry for the long post but I'm a big time Mario guy (I just started replaying Galaxy again, great game) so I'm pretty opinionated when it comes to the pudgy plumber. |
Considering that they will release the different kind of Mario game (Mario Maker, for instance), I personally think they might be able to focus more on another franchise or even the new IP once for a while, so I think it's mostly a good thing.
|
Well, series like Metroid or Star Fox could certainly need some focus unlike the Mario series. Year of Luigi was fun, though.
|
I do hope they do other year of's for other characters, but i don't think that he likely.
