Not everyone can be beautiful
I read the following article in the newspaper on the way home from work this evening. I thought it would be interesting to discuss, particularly coming off the back of the discussion on the Victoria Secret fashion show thread.
Spoiler:
The message basically seems to be that people need to accept the fact that they may be average looking or even ugly. Discuss! |
I agree in a sense, we can't all be amazingly good looking but few off us are really ugly either. On the other hand though, what requirements is he using to define each category? Beauty is something subjective.

I think that we cannot all be beautiful when beauty is defined by the statistically average idea of attractiveness. What I mean by this is that when there is research conducted on attractiveness/beauty and individuals rate one another then there tends to be a group of people that statistically "comes out on top" in terms of beauty and attractiveness. One example of this was an Australia study conducted on heterosexual caucasians that's basis wasn't totally focused on attractiveness but did show that certain people were rated as attractive significantly more than others. (I apologize but unless you have access to journals you won't be able to read beyond the abstract afaik but here is a link for citation purposes).
So what is beauty in this sense? It's the most popular idea of beauty, but this can be different for any given purpose. Beauty here is just the statistical average. It is true that people need to face the fact that not everyone is the most beautiful in terms of the statistical average idea of beauty, but they can be beautiful to someone in the world. I think that is very important to note for one's self esteem haha. This is all on the basis of looks and doesn't touch upon other means of attractiveness (voice, opinions, smell, capabilities, humour, etc). SO I really wouldn't be telling people to accept they're not beautiful and get real haha. They should accept they might not conform to the average idea of physical beauty but they could conform to the average idea of other types of attractiveness! |
The idea that everyone can be beautiful is rather unrealistic. We live in a world of differences, of opposites. You cannot have ugly without beauty, strong without weak, smart without stupid, just as you can't have shadow without light. Like the people above me have said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. One person could consider me to be the fucking ugliest thing to ever walk the planet while another could think that I'm beauty incarnate. No one person can be considered ugly/beautiful by every single other person in the world. You can't be everything, and there's nothing wrong with that.
I've always found it a little strange/interesting/amusing that society in general will praise individuality/uniqueness/differences but then turn around and condemn that with things like "everyone is special" and "we're all human so why should we care about our differences" and stuff like that. |

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, aha. I mean in terms of PEOPLE, there's beautiful faces, beautiful personalities, beautiful talents, and beautiful virtues. Some people have all those things, others have none. Most people have just a few. Actually thinking about it, I'm surrounded by people who don't really care about what you look like, as long as your company is something that can be enjoyed.
So, I agree in a way and here's why: whether you are what society would call ugly, average, or beautiful, society shouldn't really care about that, since that's not what defines you as a person. You shouldn't care either for that very same reason. I've always thought that confidence in appearance and self-awareness is what makes people really shine in the end. But the reality is that this Kellie Scott person does have a point about where society as a whole stands. |
it is said that Beauty Lies in the Eye of the Beholder. . .
. . .but I doubt many have the bravery or the strength to go looking for it. Spoiler:
But that's neither here nor there. I think the 'everyone is beautiful' ideology is hogwash. The same goes for 'everyone gets a trophy'. You're not particular pretty, no I'm not going to date you, you're fat. You're not big boned, you're fat. Hop on that treadmill. As you can see, I have a special dark spot where I keep my hate of the obese. This particular breed of hate feeds off of sweat, tears, fat and. . . bacon. Beauty, to me, is an unattainable aspect, and I associate it with perfect on a close scale. Artful and beauty to one falls horribly short to another. But I'm sure most of us here can agree that to attain a shaving of that aspect, you have to want it. Sitting around and eating American cheese all day isn't helping you lose weight and it sure doesn't make you pretty. Being attractive or pretty takes some work, exercise and a lick of discipline. I think you'll agree with me that someone with a sour smell, someone that doesn't shower or bathes in perfume instead of showering, someone that weighs enough to have waves of back fat, someone who doesn't brush their teeth, i.e. someone that doesn't do proper maintenance on their person is not deserved of the term 'pretty' or 'beautiful' in any sense of the word. If they can crinkle your nose, they probably aren't the most beautiful of people. We're of course, excusing those that just finished with some form of strenuous activity that makes them smell a bit off as they haven't had the chance to wash, but if they have that chance and skip it. . . Don't listen to me. I just think it's another excuse to stuff our faces with garbage and call it a good day if we took five steps. I'm pretty sure it's an American concept. |
