The things you can't do/or know
The topic exists becuase whenever someone comes over (your parents most likely) and ask you "How do you do x" they'll assume you'll know everything (and to an extent it is true) but there are some things that even you might not understand.
I don't know much more about video encoding other than "use handbrake" to convert videos for mobile phones. Ask about bitrates, profiles and other things like that and I won't even know a thing. Audio is a similar situation, especially when it comes to knowing what headphones are the best. |
In the past, I've been asked to fixed a ton of things relating to computers by parents, but luckily, I've been able to get around to almost each and every one.
Of course, there are some areas that I have zero idea on (one example of this would be creating a new disc partition and installing a copy of Linux Mint into my parents' desktop; when I was asked to do that, I did not know how things had actually worked, but they did expect me to), but thankfully, I usually get to figure things out in regards to them with some guidance from Internet. Normally, I don't find myself being bothered by situations like this; I suppose they give me chance to learn and add more into my knowledge. |
Oh yeah, when people find out you are good with computers they start constantly asking questions that can be completely irreverent to what I know. I know servers and windows OS, yet people will ask me why a website changed the way it looks.

There's a lot I don't understand or fully understand. At my job, knowing enough to get it working is generally enough to get by. There's not much time for diving into it full-bore. I try to at least have a basic understanding of everything I can, but my specialty is Windows servers and desktops.
