Am I the only one who doesn't use fly anymore?
I mean, with the introduction of Soar, why even use Fly anymore? In online matches, the two-turn move lets the opponent switch to a steel pokemon or whatnot. Thing is, a lot of people at the Pokemon Club use it still, and it bewilders me. I know it's a bit of a pain using soar, but personally, I see no more need to use Fly. Plus it frees up a move space for your competitive team. But to each their own, I suppose.
Having said that, do you still use fly? If so, for what reason? |
I still use fly. It's faster than soaring, especially for faraway locations.
Plus, it's not such a bad move ingame. The AI is pretty much too dumb to switch in anyways. But soaring is indeed handy for people who don't use fly or don't want an ingame team with a flying pokemon just to move around. |
I'm using Fly on my breeder Talonflame. It's more about efficiency, really. I don't want to waste more time having to fly somewhere by my own, when I can still use the old fashioned automated way that flies me across the whole region in no time.
I think it wouldn't be so bad if we hadn't to watch the mega evolution cutscene every time. It's just such a time waster... |
Fly would be useless if I were a competitive player. But I'm not. So I still use it, since it's convenient.
I originally had Fly on my Altaria right up until I was able to use the Soar feature, now I use that instead of Fly completely. It's way more efficient and gets you directly to where you need to be.
I use the Soar feature with my Latias all the time, but I'll still use the traditional Fly in games where Soaring doesn't exist, given it's likely the feature will end up being OR/AS-exclusive.
I deleted fly from my Skarmory the moment I acquired the ability to soar. True, it can take me some extra time to locate my desired destination because my sense of direction on the map isn't the best but the extra precision is well worth the freed up pokemon/move slot.
Most of the time especially in my more recent playthroughs of any game, I'd rather not teach an HM I didn't desire to use in battle purely for its inability to be removed until reaching the move deleter who is typically located in one of the last three gym cities in any version. I've noticed that they're becoming more and more useless both in and out of battle with each generation. Surf and fly are the only HMs which are still efficient but I'd been jonesing to teach my Skarmory Steel Wing (or maybe it was metal claw, I just know it was a steel move) with fly as its only move I was willing to part with. In addition, the wild battles are interesting, not to mention possibly useful being the highest leveled in the game pre-Ever Grande. In addition, since soaring is the only way mirage spots can be accessed it just makes sense to combine fly with that for a single mode of air transportation. While some find the repeated wait through the opening animation obnoxious I don't have a problem with it and I don't understand the argument that flying is faster. That is true but barely. Once you get used to the soar map it only takes a few extra seconds if you don't end up in a wild battle along the way and when you think about it fly's opening animation is just about as long as soar's. |
I haven't used Fly in ORAS since I unlocked the ability to Soar. Yeah, Flying's faster, but Soaring doesn't take that long and is waaaaaaaaay cooler.
The only real reason I bother with Fly is when I go into the menu with the PokéNav to see which trainers want to rematch me or what not. Other than that, soaring is the way to go most of the time.
If only we could skip the cutscenes when soaring, then I'd probably use it more. But since we couldn't, I'll be sticking with fly. :P
I use fly when.... I guess I don't use it.
I don't use it at all anymore lol. I've always hated how Fly (and Surf) take up move slots when they're moves that a Pokémon should be able to use anyway... like [email protected] and Soar lol. The little cut scenes and having to actually do the Flying are so worth not having to keep a random Pokémon in my party just for Fly.
I really enjoy the Soaring cutscenes and such. And even did exactly like Blue- I instantly got rid of Fly from my own Altaria in favor of Soar. Even was able to get rid of Surf and Waterfall after reaching Evergrande! Actually I think you need at least Surf for Victory Road..... But whatever.
I didn't use Latias ingame so this makes up for it. Getting to Soar on her is awesome and I've memorized the entire Hoenn map in better detail then I had before, along with Mirage Spots and other legends. I even found Cresent Isle twice.... Too bad Cresselia doesn't respawn. XD Anyhow, I agree that Soar might be the new 'walking Pokemon' thing. I still use fly in Y of course, except I always forget and open my Town Map from the select menu first. :/ |
I already unlocked Soar, but I still use Fly...even in battle too. I haven't really bothered to delete the move. lmao.
I don't even have the games and had no idea this was a feature but I'm suddenly getting the urge to throw money at my computer screen until a 3DS and Pokemon OR/AS pops out. Needless to say, if I had the game I'd soar all the time.
If you never hear from me again its because I spent all my money to acquire the ability to Soar and am thus living under a cardboard box with my shiny new Pokemon game. |

As a few others have said, the Soaring animations can be time-consuming. I mean yes, they only last a few more seconds than the Flying animations, but when you regularly have to fly between Blissey Secret Base(s), Lilicove City (for the lottery), specific Horde locations and the Battle Resort, those extra few seconds start to add up. And seeing how you can put your Wifi team in your Battle Box, I don't see what's the deal with having a Fly user in your party, unless you want to have two different Wifi teams between the Battle Box and your actual party, so you can alternate between the two.
I use fly all the time still, like everyone else said, it's faster. Soar is definitely more fun and exciting I suppose, but that doesn't change the fact that I'd prefer to use fly over soar when going from Mossdeep to Fallarbor :)
I don't use fly anymore, but I'm having second thoughts.
Soaring to a place like Meteor Falls (secret base) is always a pain. |
I use Soar more than Fly, but I still use Fly on occasion. I mostly just want to stay in the habit of using it because Game Freak probably wont be including it in the next game because Game Freak.
I always use Fly because I am fly.
As soon as I gained access to the Eon Flute, I boxed Swellow and used soaring as my main town-hopping method. It may be more time-consuming to go from one town to the other, but it's more fun.
I removed Fly for the move slot wasting issue and now exclusively use Soar. Yes, Fly's more convenient. Especially for me, because I get super lost and don't know the layout of Hoenn all that well, so it takes me forever to find where I'm going. But I don't really care. Don't want to waste that slot. And whilst I hate that Mega Evolution cutscene and find it cumbersome, I like the classic feeling of flying through the region. It's like an old Final Fantasy game from the Playstation era. I just love world maps and airships. Also, I usually find some Mirage Spots and Legendaries as I'm going along too.
It's still quicker to move about the game using Fly, and if you have a Talonflame with Flame Body, it gives you the extra Egg hatching help (note to self, clone my Lv.100 one to move over for the Battle Resort). However, Soaring just is more fun.
I've been pottering about in Smash lately, but when I swap back into Pokémon, I'll be looking at getting my Pokédex full so I can start hunting down Egg Moves and then breed for Shinies. |
When the idea of soaring was first shown off, I honestly thought that they were going to replace the fly mechanic with soaring. I can't really say that I use soaring much, but that's only because I always carry around an HM slave for busy work, and it happens to have fly. I guess it's slightly faster to fly than to soar, but I honestly don't see why they need both in the game.
The things I like about Soaring is the Night Music (reminded me of Unova's gate theme) and the Mirage Spots
I wish there were more Pokémon options though, like Rayquaza and Mega Pidgeot HUGE missed opportunity there...ah well, maybe next Gen |
I still use Fly at times, in case I want to go to some routes quickly. Even though Soar is also the cool alternative to fly, because I love its music, and how I can ride my Latias to where I wanted to be.
I never use Fly anymore! This was especially useful when I was completing the Hoenn Pokedex. My party consisted of my lv 100 Sceptile with False Swipe and 5 Pokemon that I was trying to level up with the EXP Share so they would evolve. Maximum efficiency because then I didn't have to carry a Fly HM slave while I walked around Hoenn :) Plus, Soaring doesn't take that long anyway, and you can encounter the Mirage Islands and catch even more Pokemon.
uhhh... I find it kind of inconvenient to have to wait for the soar and land animations, as they are a few seconds longer than the Fly animations. Plus, I don't really like having to hover over the cities (somewhat too precisely for my tastes) to land, and tapping the map on the bottom screen and hitting Fly is a lot quicker. I do soar a lot, don't get me wrong - I just haven't replaced using Fly with it.
The animations can be a pain to go through when you have multiple places you want to go to, but it's definitely more fun and dare I say easier than needing an HM Fly slave in your party. I use the Soaring mechanic most of the time lol.
In the beginning, I didn't use Fly at all, because soaring was way too good to not use. But now it got a bit boring, and the cutscenes are too long, so I use Fly again (Except when searching for new Mirage spots everyday). Oh well...
Well in the beginning I used Soar all the time. But then it got tedious when I'm flying to search for Secret Bases and the like. Honestly, I don't want to fly from the Battle Resort all the way to Route 115 just to go to my Secret Base manually, it's faster to use Fly.
It's easier to have a Pokemon with Fly so you can immediately fly to a location via AreaNav. Other than that, I use Soar if I feel like exploring the Hoenn skies or searching for Mirage Spots. I'd use soar all the time if the cutscene isn't so long though. Pokemon Rangers: Guardian Signs simply had the [email protected] swoop down, pick you up and boom, you're flying in the sky already! Not to mention they have an area list that you could use as shortcuts. The spin-off did a good job making soaring not too tedious, why can't they do that? At least put shortcuts to the cities and towns. |
Personally, on average, I use fly like around 10 to 11 times per 4 hours or so.
I use Fly all the time. i would Soar if the Mega Evolving thing and landing things were shorter. And if you could just press where you wanted to go and then you're there.
But, Flying is just so much faster! |
i never use fly anymore lol! eon flute is the best
I don't think I've used Fly at all this generation. I don't have the 6th gen games and the fast travel provided by the NPC did most of the fly-worthy traveling for me anyway. Soaring imo is simply better -- despite the mandatory cutscene. Plus; mirage spots! Which I think you can't get to using fly?
I use Fly in my Alpha Sapphire. Not in my failed Omega Ruby Wonderlocke. I don't see the point of Fly once I get the ability to Soar for the story. Fly's useful for Secret Base hunting, Soaring is better for getting to places.
Fly is quicker for me. When you soar, you have to wait and watch Lati mega-evolve and I aint got time for that.
Soaring is cool tho. |
If I have a Pokemon with Fly in my party, I'll use Fly. If not, I'll soar.
Soar for me is better, I really love the cutscenes
Fly is faster since you dont have to see the darn mega evolve scene each time like with soar and flying alow you to land on any specific route now just like soar does
I generally find myself using soar most times as I only carry my three main Pokemon with me (Sceptile, Mightyena, Metagross) but if it's a short distance, say Mauville to Verdanturf (should walk but too lazy :p) I use fly if it's on hand.
It kind of depends on how I'm feeling for me. I find soaring to be more fun, but I am sick of that mega evolution cutscene (I zone out during it now). Also, checking on mirage spots daily is nice. However, if I have extra room in my party or I'm hopping around to check on berries, rematches, secret bases, etc. it's much more convenient to use fly since I can select it from my pokenav. And yes, I do farm berries all over. It's pretty convenient now that you can fly to a specific route, and the berry master still has a limit to how many can be grown there...
I still use it quite often, actually! The [email protected] animation is cool and all but it's time consuming and just flying does the job better. It's quite a waste to use the HM though when you can fly on the Eon when it doesn't even need to be on your party.
When I do fly on my Latios though, oh man it is fun! I like going as high as I can and just generally flying and messing around before I go to where I'm actually supposed to go lol. |
My Altraria knew at first but i deleted it b/c i got a Latias! Im gonna ride it everywhere i go!
Literally i just imagine myself riding into a city on a mega evolved Latias how sick is that? Im just flying everywhere on her now! Plus i like to fly around look at everywhere and see the mirage islands and such. Why would i use boring old fly anymore? Haha |
I use Fly all the time. @[email protected]; It's definitely convenient not needing a flyer on your team to go places but soaring takes a while and I'm almost always in a hurry when flying around. It's just a lot more convenient for someone like me who goes back and forth often for way too many things. :(

I use it. With the addition of the new fly mechanic where you can fly to routes now it makes pokemon hunting much more easier. Plus you dont get the eon flute until sometime after you get fly, or at least as far as i can remember. Ive been playing competitive for so long now i cant remember the storyline XD
I use fly.
It's not a terrible move itself, and it's the best flying STAB move I can give my dragonite, Volg. Worst case scenario, they switch out when the move starts and it doesn't do much damage. People always worry about switchouts too much. Unless the opponent knows I'll use fly before I do, they'll only switch out after the first turn, so on the second turn they take slight damage and Volg is ready for action. Unless I have Volg with me, though, I go with the Soar function, and I really hope they bring it into the future games. Spoiler:
I use fly up until the point I get Soar, it is cooler and to be honest it does mean you can remove the need for having a specific flying poke in your party - especially seeing as ORAS already needs a HM slave in the first place, which I think is the only thing I dislike about the start of ORAS.
Either way, I haven't used Fly competitively since I came back to Pokemon with X and Y (which is pretty limited - granted). |
Yeah fly is so gone from me it practically needs a wanted poster. But seriously as soon as you get the ability to soar it's practically useless and saves a move/pokemon slot.
