ORAS OU Threat list

While the list shouldn't be the thing that should be used start team building, it should be used as a way to finish up or polish your idea or concept that has been incorporated into the team to handle the meta-game better. The List has been divided into 4 parts (Mega's, Offensive, Defensive, Niche) and also has a section called "common cores" and "what to use". The cores section has been added so that you have an idea about how people normally build their teams around while also providing some good ideas about cores, it also helps in figuring out what kind of cores your team is extremely weak to and hence patch up the problem. What to use is where you get to know the classifications of the various Pokemons stated in the main list. It can also help you in choosing a pokemon that might the duty you want for your team (keep in mind that the pokemons listed are those that have been tried and proven successful and is in no way a complete list, but also you should keep in mind while using other pokemons that may have certain niches that it shouldn't be too specific (as in just used to beat a singular pokemon, for example claydol for landorus i or for rapid spin). I hope this list serves your team building purposes, as always all suggestions/changes that you might want added to op is welcome. The latest PS! usage statistics can be found here. What To Use: Spoiler:
A special thanks to the btb forum and the battle server. Anti, Elf, Archer have really been a big help and have done a super majority of the list. so yeah they are cool people |
Correction: as a pure Electric Pokemon in base form, Ampharos can't learn Draco Meteor (Draco Meteor can only be learned by natural Dragon Pokemon at max happiness, as well as a select few event Pokemon and Draco Plate Arceus).
Other notable moves for Diggersby are U-turn, Knock Off and Fire Punch. |
Yeah I couple of little things I'll throw in here. For Mega Gardevoir you can add Will-o-Wisp to the list of notable support moves and for Kabutops you can put in Rapid Spin under its list of support moves.
If I think of other shit I'll let ya know. |
Pretty cooool - looks pretty inclusive, only things I can spot off the top of my head, (and please correct if these are just my misinformed conjectures) besides the ones you haven't put anything under just because you haven't got to 'em yet -
* Is Stone Edge worth mentioning on Diggersby? * Is Iron Head / Tail worth mentioning on Garchomp? * Is there a reason AV Azumarill is listed as a counter over another azumarill for mega gyarados when M Gyra is not a special attacker? * For Amoonguss - I think you meant Rage Powder, not just Rage. lol but if there's actually a crazy strategy that involves amoonguss and rage - I am ashamed for missing it. Also, is rage powder worth mentioning since OU is considered seperate from doubles; and rage powder has no use in singles play? |
Quote:
2. Iron Tail is inaccurate. There isn't much of a difference between a neutral STAB Earthquake and a 2x super effective Iron Head: 252 Atk Garchomp Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Altaria: 151-178 (51.8 - 61.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO 252 Atk Garchomp Iron Head vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Altaria: 162-192 (55.6 - 65.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO |
Plus iron head only hits togekiss which is hit harder by stone edge.

looks gr8 thanks for doing this, here are my comments:
- remove the shitmons, esp. mega. to be specific, i would remove the following: ampharos, blastoise, camerupt, lucario, ludicolo, pidgeot, smeargle, staraptor, zygarde, audino (lol), aggron, cofagrigus, forretress, gastrodon, porygon2, seismitoad, slowking, steelix, whimsicott. maybe thundurus-t, tangrowth, bronzong and a few other more borderline mons. politoed is def/support, not offensive. it's not that these mons are bad (though some of them definitely are), but oras is a metagame with an oversaturation of threats. since it's a team-building resource especially for newer players, i think having these threats is both misleading and makes everything seem more daunting than it is. but no one runs most of these mons. the better ones (like slowking pidgeot blastoise tangrowth bronzong etc) might have their own section like "lesser threats" but i would not group them with everything else. - i would organize this roughly by usage. 1760+ stats (or w/e the cutoff is now) is best. alphabetical is convenient but has no coherent purpose, whereas usage/viability does. - i would also separate megas and non megas. this seems less necessary but it still makes sense to me since the mechanic restricts building. - to the first point, i'd make the rough cutoff of what should be on this like "ou by usage" but adding important or unique lower tier threats. the rain sweepers are a good example. also stuff like togekiss which is unique AND annoying *enough* to be noted. - capitalize everything. - i would only list relevant competitive abilities. so only sheer force for landorus, etc. - bold, asterisk, or otherwise visually mark STAB attacks - not sure about color coding the types just cause the thought of yellow electric types is painful - i thought it might be cool instead of the teammates things to just axe that and instead have an end section of the list where common cores of these mons were listed, ie skarm/chans, venutran, keldtar, rotomw/landt, ferro/glisc/bro, keld/lati/landt, sand core, rain core, etc. no need to go into much depth but just so people see common combos. teammates section seems a little awkward as it stands now i guess? looks good thanks again gr8 contributions ^^ |

i am implementing the changes and the info elf and everyone provided now and will probably put a updated+date tag in the title so we know if the suggestions have been updated or not. |
there are so many threats in OU. gotta love it
|
you can keep those mons in if you want but i'd put them in their own section. "lesser threats" or "not ou by usage" or something like that is very necessary i think. here, look at this:
| 88 | Staraptor | 1.045% | | 125 | Bronzong | 0.454% | | 141 | Cofagrigus | 0.336% | | 149 | Aggron | 0.279% | if we add up this usage, it adds to 2.114% usage. combined that is less than: | 69 | Sceptile | 2.197% | who is not ou itself. this is a threat list, not a viability list. the math does not lie - these are not threats. if you want to include them for the sake of completeness, i'm not going to stop you (and you're right that it would improve the list in an objective sense - just don't want you to needlessly make too much work for yourself...x_x). but the math is just way too significant to conflate something like the latis (used on almost exactly 1/3 of teams) with mons who you are more likely to not run into than to run into if you played 50 (or many more) matches... you can include trick room in the "cores" part of the list though just so people are aware it exists. |
Quote:
And i shall make a sub-division called lesser threats or something (i will make an explanation in the intro about these later) and put these underused mons there, since they do have some niche how ever small Also is there some kind of list with all the common core that i can refer? |
i'll just list some and people can add on
m-metagross/keldeo (pending ban) m-venusaur/heatran m-sableye/heatran skarmory/chansey landorus/thundurus landorus-t/rotom-w ferrothorn/slowbro m-pinsir/talonflame m-gallade/bisharp m-scizor/bisharp gengar/bisharp tyranitar/excadrill tyranitar/keldeo tyranitar/landorus m-charizard y/tyranitar m-manectric/landorus-t politoed/list of possible rain sweepers m-diancie/magnezone m-gardevoir/keldeo slowbro/amoonguss/tornadus-t clefable/quagsire and so on there are a ton. perhaps to narrow it it might be better to focus on things that might affect teambuilding, especially trapping cores ("don't rely too much on lati/ferro" etc.), weather cores (self-explanatory), stall/defensive cores (so you know how to focus your breakers), and voltturn cores (since these tend to function as a single unit rather than as individual threats, to some degree). this would take out cores that are very good but don't need extra teambuilding consideration (ie mgarde/keld or bisharp/gar). in fact that's almost certainly what i'd do. |
add weezing

Add Weavile and Exploud on this list (offensive threats). Weav is a good trapper and punishes offense teams, while Exploud eats orphans on TR or with Sticky Web support.

splendid work!!

Updated-
thanks anti, and i shall arrange the offense section according to the usage list tomorrow or so, since i think i will be a bit free on sunday. |
In regards to the "Counters: N/A" stuff
Add Scizor Mega to counters to Mega Metagross, its as near a 100% counter as you're gonna get. Cresselia with some sp.def evs is basically THE counter to Landorus-I too. It takes no shit from the CMer either as CM Sludge Wave fails to 2HKO and Ice Beam to 2hko it back. Claydol also walls basically all Landorus-I variations. I know it sucks but hey lol. Also id still call Doublade a counter to MHera because no self respecting one runs EQ lol. Also Defensive Granbull is probs as near as a good counter as you're ever going to find for MHera because of Intimidate i know its niche garbage but hey lol. Will edit possibly later. |

Sorry for no updates, i have been really busy with my exams and was feeling a bit sick. Anyway i have update the op with what has been suggested and completed the data of all the mons. I have also added a what to use section so you can easily find out what kind of a mons of some type (wall breaker/stall breaker) people may use.
Work Pending: Fill in niche mons. i shall write up a list and post it here later, and update the op with it if people think the list is okay. Edit: Niche list megas Spoiler:

ok so the main thing i did here was i revamped the cores part whose structure i wasn't digging, so that's done now. all this really needs is a few pokemon to finish and then some some quality control (and probably new font for the headings sry 'frijole' is uuuugly) but yeah this is pretty solid. also moved stuff to niche mon status.

These cores are usually more defensive due to the lack of Spikers suitable for offensive teams after the Greninja ban, but Spikes are often paired with strong Mega Pokemon like Lopunny, Charizard X, and Gyarados whose checks and counters are often ground-bound. It is important not to give these cores free turns. http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/479w.pnghttp://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/310-m.pnghttp://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/243.pnghttp://sprites.pokecheck.org/icon/645-therian.pnghttp://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/212.pnghttp://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/212-m.pnghttp://pldh.net/media/pokexycons/015-mega.pnghttp://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/641-s.pnghttp://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/385.png VoltTurn: VoltTurn cores abuse the momentum that Volt Switch and U-turn provide to maintain a favorable game-state for the user. Some VoltTurn Pokemon are fast to maintain offensive pressure, while some are slow to grant frail attackers free switch-ins. In either case, VoltTurn teams often utilize powerful breaker Pokemon like Landorus in order to take full advantage of the pressure that VoltTurn can provide. http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/462.pnghttp://pldh.net/media/pokexycons/576.pnghttp://pldh.net/media/pokexycons/334-mega.pnghttp://pldh.net/media/pokexycons/719-mega.pnghttp://pldh.net/media/pokexycons/376-mega.pnghttp://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/282-m.pnghttp://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/127-m.png Steel Trapping: Steel trapping cores typically run Magnezone (Gothitelle is also effective) to remove Steel-type Pokemon, especially Scizor-Mega and Ferrothorn, in order to facilitate a sweep for attackers walled or troubled by those Pokemon. Fairy-type Pokemon are typically run with this core, especially Fairy Mega Pokemon like Diancie and Altaria. It is important to have backup checks to these Pokemon if running Scizor or Ferrothorn; some Ferrothorn users run Shed Shell Ferrothorn or Skarmory to combat these cores. http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/248.pnghttp://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/625.pnghttp://pldh.net/media/pokexycons/376-mega.pnghttp://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/212.pnghttp://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/647.pnghttp://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/645.pnghttp://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/490.png Pursuit Trapping: Pursuit trapping cores aim to remove specific Dark-weak Pokemon like Starmie, Jirachi, Celebi, and especially [email protected] to clear the way for specific sweepers. Keldeo and Landorus are the most common offensive Pokemon used with Pursuit support. These cores also benefit from shutting down teams that rely on Starmie for hazard control. http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/186.pnghttp://pldh.net/media/pokexycons/260-mega.pnghttp://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/230.pnghttp://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/141.pnghttp://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/139.pnghttp://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/641-s.png Rain Offense: Rain offense is more of a playstyle than a core, but the core of Rain teams consists of Drizzle Politoed and at least two Rain abusers. Not every Pokemon on Rain teams are designed to take advantage of weather, however. Nevertheless, Rain is useful for making Swift Swim abusers extremely dangerous. Non-weather offensive teams often struggle with Rain teams. http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/248.pnghttp://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/450.pnghttp://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/530.pnghttp://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/445-m.png Sand Offense: Usually Smooth Rock Tyranitar and Sand Rush Excadrill, Sand offense provides a solid backbone for offense teams. Either Sand setter can set up Stealth Rock, while Excadrill can Rapid Spin. Excadrill's doubled Speed gives it great offensive and defensive utility alike, easing team-building. Garchomp-Mega can provide a breaker for these cores, though it is rare. Sand Rush Excadrill is the head of the beast and should be prepared for. http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/127-m.pnghttp://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/663.png | http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/212-m.pnghttp://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/625.png Overload Core: Overload cores attempt to single out specific defensive Pokemon and overpower them with offensive pressure. The most famous example of this strategy is the combination of Pinsir-Mega and Talonflame, AKA BirdSpam, which attempts to overpower Flying-type resists like Rotom-W. This usually functions by sacrificing one Pokemon to weaken the opposing team's defenses for the other, which can then sweep. Scizor-Mega + Bisharp is another example, which attempts to overload Keldeo, the most common Dark-type check on offensive teams. These cores vary widely and are very customizable, and defeating them requires strong strategic thinking in-battle. http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/080.pnghttp://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/591.pnghttp://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/641-s.pnghttp://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/594.pnghttp://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/465.pnghttp://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/199.png Regenerator Core: Regenerator cores leverage their inherent survivability against opponents, which affords users a wider margin for error. Regenerator cores are very difficult to wear down and require very strong breakers to overpower them. However, with the exception of Tornadus-T, Regenerator abusers are typically very passive and can be taken advantage of. |
