CHESS YALL - The Tabletop Gaming Lounge

Introduction

Come one and come all. Are you wondering what this club is about? Well look no further, everything non-video gaming related be it tabletop, role-playing, board or card gaming; you name it, this is the club for it!

Additional Info

For the TGL there is a main topic, however you don't necessarily have to stay on topic. This is supposed to be a little more laid back. So if you have something you want to talk about that isn't related to whatever the main topic is, then don't be afraid to post about it! You won't get in trouble unless it's something that doesn't belong in the TGL.

Rules!

Every game and every club has them. These will probably be updated as time goes on, but for now here's ours:

-Follow all PokeCommunity and FC&G Rules
-Respect is a must in this group
-No trolling, flaming, bashing.
-Have fun!
-Don't spam with requests or anything like that
-If someone hasn't gotten back to you about something you've posted within two weeks you may repost it

Current main topic:

Bustin' out a schedule

Signups:

While there is no official club signup sheet, as time goes on we will be hopefully hosting many games here so as those games are created their signups will be here.

donavannj March 13th, 2015 11:28 AM

What time works for everyone for this weekend's CAH event? I've got nothing scheduled, but I may wind up not waking up before noon my time (GMT -6; currently in Daylight Savings).

Foxrally March 13th, 2015 1:12 PM

Please forgive my ignorance Sonata-sensei and Don-sensei but what is CAH?

Cards against humanity! If you're not familiar with it, think of apples to apples but much much dirtier. We'll for sure be playing tomorrow but we might also play on Sunday for those that don't see this until then or can't join us tomorrow.

And I'll probably end up staying up all night and just open a room at the start of the day in case the site decides to get busy. I'll post the link and password to it tomorrow.

Oooh, interesting :) Never tried it buy I've heard of it quite a bit. I'm probably going to be joining :D

Juno March 13th, 2015 4:28 PM

I'm so down for CAH! I'll try to swing by if you guys are playing on Sunday, but I doubt I can make it for tomorrow.

Austin March 13th, 2015 7:13 PM

Yup yup, I'll probably be there for CAH whenever you guys decide to play. :)

donavannj March 14th, 2015 1:36 PM

Okay, I'll probably be starting a room myself in an hour or two, depending on whether or not Sonata already has one.

EDIT: Targeting a 6 PM start for my session.

EDIT2: I mean, 6PM my time. Post was originally made at 4:36 PM my time, and it is now 5:15 PM my time.

Sonata will probably have a room already, though.

Lycanthropy March 15th, 2015 2:37 AM

Tabletop games, I'm a real fan of those!

I've never played CAH, but it's one of the games I really need to play sometime.

Sonata March 16th, 2015 12:15 AM

Well, we didn't really end up getting an official game going, but through the past two days we played through about 6 or 7 different games with the majority of the people that were interested. So now that that's out of the way, the question is what do we do now?

Remember, this club is not only a basic meeting grounds for people interested in playing games, but should also be treated as a place to come for all things related to tabletop gaming. Want a rate on a deck you've built? Drop the link. Need some inspiration for a character in a game? Just ask and you shall receive. Pretty much nothing is off limits guys. So if you don't feel like being part of the main conversation but still want to talk about TG related things, don't be afraid to post.

gimmepie March 16th, 2015 1:29 AM

It would be cool to see more CAH events, preferably ones accessible to my timezone xD

Foxrally March 16th, 2015 1:51 AM

Yesterday's CAH games were awesome. I agree with GP, there should be many more of them, for non-supporters too.

Sonata March 19th, 2015 1:10 AM

So how about trying to hammer out a date and time for another round of CAH? And then we can start looking at maybe brainstorming some other things we'd like to try and branch out to?

I could also make us a skype chat if we'd like to do that as well.

Lycanthropy March 19th, 2015 11:33 AM

Yeah, sure. But planning dates can be hard with timezones and stuff.

A Skype chat seems a good idea to me.

Sonata March 23rd, 2015 5:55 PM

Yo! If y'all wanna do some CAH or something else (if you have any ideas for anything just throw them out, can be boardgameonline, chess, monopoly, literally anything) post some times that you should be free for the next week or two and we'll start working something out.

And if we get like 5 or 6 people who want to have a skype group we could do that as well. Things like CAH are always more fun when you can hear voices.

Chess would be pretty cool, you could run it as a tourney perhaps. I haven't played in ages.
Uno or Rummy would be pretty fun too.
As long as I get my CAH in an accessible time :P

My timezone is GMT +8, it's currently 11:42am for me and it's usually easier for me to do things at night.

I'd be interested in doing a chess tournament :) I haven't played in so long. I'd also love to play euchre, but I don't even know if anyone on PC plays that or how we'd go about it.

CAH is a must though. Play all the CAH.

It's been a long time since I've played too, never heard of euchre though.

Lycanthropy March 25th, 2015 9:52 AM

As for games there are sites for CAH and Diplomacy in my knowledge. I also know a site with a few card games, but those games aren't even known all over my country, so the chance you know them is about 0. Also the site is non-English. Games like Mafia are possible to play via e-mail too, but that's not really necessary because of the existing game at Forum Games.

And I've never heard of euchre either, but I looked it up, and it shares some traits to games I know. I don't think it would be very hard to learn for me.

My timezone is GMT+1 by the way.

donavannj March 25th, 2015 10:57 AM

I'm interested in all of the games mentioned.

I'm in favor of doing a chess tournament next, if we can find a good way to play against each other online.

There are loads of online chess games. This site in particular looks promising.

If we are going to do a chess tournament, I recommend we do it as a round robin. Just have people register for it and then everyone plays everyone at least once, then tally points at the end to determine the overall winner. In chess tournaments points usually go like what I have below for memory.

Lose - 0
Draw - 1
Win - 2

Sonata March 27th, 2015 12:35 PM

I'll post up a blog entry here in a few minutes and try to get some people to come join in on chess. And if you actually want to be in the chess tournament just clarify that with another post if you would. On Monday I'll look at setting up a bracket, and depending on how many people sign up I may make it a double elimination thing. :)

Or I may just make it d.e. anyways.

Klippy March 27th, 2015 2:04 PM

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE SIGN ME UP BOOOOYS. I am not a chess master, but I love it. :D

I love chess xD

Lycanthropy March 28th, 2015 1:09 AM

Sure, I'm not that good at chess, but count me in.

Judge Mandolore Shepard March 29th, 2015 6:17 AM

While I am undecided whether I will join the chess tournament or not, I would like to mention that I am quite skilled at chess. I was even a member of a chess club when I was in elementary and middle school.

Me too xD
Well only in primary school, I went back to help teach for a few years after that though. I even did tournaments and got to get beaten by a grandmaster once. It's been years since I played seriously but I like to think I've still got some semblance of my old skill haha

Sonata March 29th, 2015 1:17 PM

I've never been anything special at chess, I've been playing with my dad since I was about 4 but have long since forgotten all of the special moves and whatnot. I just like to play for fun now :P

You weren't playing to have fun to begin with?

I don't remember very much myself, the limit of my memory is pretty much castling, pinning and forking haha

I was raised up to try and be the best at everything. Learning chess was just as much a drill as up downs for football were. But over time my dad realized I was too straightforward and hardheaded and probably wouldn't ever be good at it, so then it turned more into a for fun thing.

Looking through all of the special moves and whatnot you can do for chess, it appears the only thing I actually forgot about was en passant. Still don't expect much out of myself though haha.

I don't even remember what that is so I'm googling it now haha
I never needed help with wanting to be the best at everything myself haha, I'm very competitive.

Edit: Well that is very interesting, I've never actually learned about that.

Yep yep. Just one of those things you can do to people to forcibly open up a winning move or use against inexperienced players who are just too aggressive. I'm much more just about having fun haha.

I'm going to enjoy doing that to a noob and then making them rage when I prove I'm not cheating xD

A long time ago I played games on Pogo and I went into a game of chess and did that to like 5 in the beginner rooms and I also did the two and three move win a couple of times. It's fun to piss off noobs :3

I have only ever used the two move once and I don't think I ever did the three move.
I have used the four move to obliterate noobs and people who should know better on several occasions though.

The best part of any game, traditional or otherwise: completely wrecking your opponent in 5 moves or less.

I'll be ending sign ups tomorrow so, I'd really like it if you joined in :) it's always nice to have more people. I don't know that any of us are really that great at chess since we've all had some time to get rusty, but it'll be a fun time nonetheless!

I would say Pogo. If you don't have an account I would suggest making one, it's not a complicated process and it has a lot of games that we may be thinking about playing in the future.

dad March 31st, 2015 3:33 PM

if you're really desperate for another play then you can count me in. however, these next three days are gonna be busy for me if you don't mind. side note: i probably haven't played chess in 6/7 years so i basically suck.

You lost me. Making an account and playing games is free with pogo. There are exclusives that you have to pay for, but chess is free. And a few of the others that are on there that we'd be looking at are free such as Scrabble, Monopoly, Risk, Yahtzee, Battleship etc. etc. If there's a game we decide to play that costs money, we can always just find another site to use.

Alrighty we've got an even number and I've made a bracket! We'll be going at this round robin style to make sure everyone gets an equal chance. To get started you can either post here or vm/pm your opponents for round 1 and then once everyone gets done with those matches we'll move on to round 2 and then round 3, 4, 5.

Here is the bracket http://challonge.com/ChessIsYes

Klippy April 2nd, 2015 6:52 PM

I got wrecked hard. :'(

donavannj April 2nd, 2015 6:57 PM

Just a couple early mistakes was all it took to decide this match between rusty old veterans. With emphasis on the rusty.

gimmepie April 3rd, 2015 9:34 AM

I'm just messaging H.A.N. about our match now, I'll let you know how it goes once we get around to playing.

Edit: We'll be playing our game around the 11th

donavannj April 6th, 2015 11:23 AM

In the meantime while we wait for round one to finish, can we shift the topic to games we've picked up recently?

I picked up Weiss Schwarz a couple weeks ago and am trying to find room in my schedule to play it with the other people I got into it with as well as finding a way to make it to a local league some nights so I can make sure we're playing correctly.

Anyone else picked up a new tabletop game of some kind? Or getting back into something you were previously into?

Sonata April 6th, 2015 11:30 AM

Honey's been evading my challenge :P

A couple of weeks ago the skype group I found finally managed to get into the first session of our silver age sentinels game. And hopefully next week I'll be able to get back into played the d20 that my friend created. He put it on hold so we could play another game he made back in january, and then since then I haven't been going because of my great grandma's stroke.

Pretty hyped to get back to doing all that fun stuff, I've already got a new character made who's basically a monk who has the power to naturally negate magic and other powers.

MONK OP PLS NERF.

How is a superhero d20 like? I've never played a superhero one.

And what sorts of games has your friend been designing?

We use two d10s for all of our actions so a crit success and crit fail are 2 or 20. It gives a little more fairness to players who get crappy rolls like me. And then there's only 3 stats; body mind and soul. Body is for physical things obviously, soul is for most power based things like heat vision, shapeshifting, magic etc, and then mind is for pretty much everything else. It's pretty fun, but our gm has prtty much bailed on us.

My friend made his own system and his own world, gods, etc etc. It's completely from scratch and I could never do something like it haha. There's too much to remember. He's got 4 installations for the game so far.

Lycanthropy April 9th, 2015 4:57 AM

The newest board game I've played is Castle Panic. I've only played it once, but I really liked it. The point of the game is to semi-cooperate with the other players to defend the castle against the monsters (and boulders) coming from the forests surrounding it. I said semi-cooperative, because you have to work together to defend the castle. If the monsters completely take down all the towers, it's game over. But: the player who killed the most monsters will be awarded the title Master Slayer, so you don't want to trade all your good cards away. But yeah, if the monsters win, everybody loses.

As for tabletop RPGs, our D&D group tried to play Maid RPG some time ago, because some anime freaks wanted to play it. The game is meant to make no sense at all. One of the maids was a half-cat mermaid. The logic. Also seducing about everyone around you, should be quite common. It appeared we weren't perverted enough to play the game decently and quit halfway through the session.

gimmepie April 11th, 2015 1:15 AM

Just popping in to let you know the results. I was a good game and plot foiling was rife but I managed to end up the victor. :)

There's a chess tournament going on? That's cool, I can sub for anyone if they need it.

When I looked at the title, Boardgame Online was the first thing that came to mind. I wonder if anyone's played that, it's been a long time since I have.

I've played it a couple of times. I've been playing town of salem a lot lately though instead. Mafia always comes first for me.

Also if everyone wants to go ahead and look at round 2 that'd be fine. I need to go on and put the results up sometime today but yeah.

Don't know that you've noticed, but I updated the tournament to reflect on honey dropping out and now we are starting round 2 :) Don't feel rushed to get it done or anything, though it would be nice if we could do it sometime this week.

Euphoric April 13th, 2015 11:00 AM

I managed to defeat gimmepie, probably due to the fact that he was playing at 2 AM. gg!

Schedules may be hard to sync up for myself and H.A.N.

Are your time zones/schedules that conflicting? Perhaps you could try a weekend?

We're hashing out potential weekend stuff, but I've not had a chance to be home and check the family calendar to see if I'm expected to be somewhere or if I'll need to be asleep during the small weekend time-frame that we think might work.

Well see if you can work something out, and if not we'll figure something out after that. We might just move on to the next round and you two can play whenever you get the chance. We're not in any kind of rush right now though so don't get too excited. :)

So. The superhero tristat game that I was playing has officially derailed. The GM has abandoned us and so one of the other players started talking about what we should do next. And it seems like we'll be scrapping the superhero game and instead looking at playing something else. He dropped his pdf collection into the chat and the other players immediately jumped at the song of ice and fire game. But there's a bunch of other stuff in there too that looks promising if anyone wants to steal it for their own game or if we want to do something in the future. :)

So I'm just going to drop this link for you all to look over. I also have the pdf for the supers game that we just scrapped somewhere on my computer if that interests anyone. Don't click this link if you don't feel like reading, because there's a lot to read with most of these games. I've only read the Game of Thrones one and skimmed over Final Fantasy myself and I've had this for a couple of days now haha.

We're in the middle of a chess tournament right now, other than that it seems things are open to discussion.

Salzorrah April 20th, 2015 2:05 PM

Oh, who are the matchups left? I'm not really great when it comes to chess, but I would want to see who's left haha

Well, we're on round 2 of 4 and we've still got Me v Klippy whenever he gets back, and then donavannj v H.A.N.

We could start working out what we're going to do next though :)

Euphoric April 20th, 2015 7:58 PM

I'd be down for pretty much anything, CAH, mafia, eating some pizza, etc.

Salzorrah April 20th, 2015 11:57 PM

omg i do want another game of cah :] I kinda missed out on the first one tho :[

gimmepie April 21st, 2015 7:05 AM

I am desperate for some CAH, especially if I can actually be around for it!
I love an excuse to be terrible somewhere other than the Skype chats.

Salzorrah April 22nd, 2015 12:16 AM

OH IF WE DO CAH, can we guys make a custom deck, with custom black and white cards, based on PC?

It would be nice if we could have only blank cards somehow.

Circuit April 22nd, 2015 2:31 PM

[Jumping straight on the bandwagon here lol]

I would definitely be down for a CAH game, with a few specialised cards. Not sure how you'd do that. I'll look into that tomorrow if you want :)

If you guys know of anywhere other than xyzzy to play CAH online and you can make your own sets there then that'd be great. But for now we could always just put a group rule that any blanks that come up must be PC related for a game or two.

I'm going to make a skype group for us, so if anyone's interested just send me a pm with your skype name. Or if you've already got me on skype just message me over there and say you want in. :)

That sounds...frightening.

Xyzzy's the only place I've placed it, wasn't aware there were others. Anyways, I'll send a message forthwith.

dad April 22nd, 2015 5:29 PM

is down for cah

Salzorrah April 22nd, 2015 11:43 PM

Xyzzy is fine, but there's actually a thing called Cardcast, and you can make custom black cards and white cards, and it's compatible with Xyzzy. You just need to do a command I believe :P

Sonata April 23rd, 2015 1:48 AM

Ooooooh. OOOOOOOOOH. YES. This will be most fun to play with.

Salzorrah April 23rd, 2015 1:53 AM

It's only the final match of round two xD

Sonata April 24th, 2015 9:35 AM

Yes yes, there are still 3 more rounds to go. Unless everyone's tired and wants to move on. But I mean, I'd like to complete stuff and not just leave it hangin.

I will not be satisfied until my ass has been thoroughly kicked enough times xD

Circuit April 24th, 2015 10:17 AM

I wish I'd seen this and got in on it. I love Chess lol

Anyway, is there a way to spectate the games? (If they're not super late for me, I'd like to watch a couple)
