There was only one regional bird line since gen 3 that I didn't really like, and that's the Pidove line. Pidove is cute, but Tranquill annoys me a lot when I face it, and Unfezant is meh to me. Male Unfezant has an okay design, but female Unfezant's design sucks in my opinion.

I think every regional birds are pretty good at their own right, even though sometimes I'm not pretty sure about some of the designs (like Talonflame, for example).

I really love the gender difference concept with Unfezant. They really took inspiration from typical gender differences of birds in real life, where the males are more colourful than the females.

My favourite regional birds are Talonflame, Staraptor, and Swellow. When it comes to other Normal/Flying types, I'm fond of Dodrio and Braviary.

EDIT: @Hikamaru, you forgot to change the number.

I do agree that the gender difference concept with Unfezant was a good idea, but I'm still not very fond of its appearance, male or female. As for other birds in the game, I like Braviary, Swanna, and Murkrow (and while Honchkrow is okay, it just isn't as cool as Murkrow). I'm not a huge fan of Mandibuzz, Dodrio, Fearow, or Farfetch'd though.

Today is a sad day to be a Unova fan and you will soon learn why

And then there's Feather Dance too, which Blue's Pidgeot knows in FRLG along Sand Attack, which was a terrible trouble for my Raticate solorun. I had to keep resetting until I could land a crit or flinch the bird with Hyper Fang.

I love Starly and while I like Fletchling's line too, I'm still not fond of the idea the regional bird splits its type to one of the starter types. You know, because of balance.

I was actually glad that Fletchinder and Talonflame became Fire/Flying. Besides, there are people who use Fennekin and Fletchling on the same team.

classiccartoonsftw July 14th, 2015 10:11 AM

Agreed. Braviary would've made a great Fighting/Flying type too.

I think Noctowl should have been Flying/Psychic, I'm pretty sure it can learn a few Psychic moves and it would set it apart from the likes of Pidgeot etc.

classiccartoonsftw July 14th, 2015 1:04 PM

I too think that Noctowl should've been Psychic/Flying. Aside from that, I think Luxray should've been Electric/Dark, Lilligant should've been Grass/Fairy, and the Goomy line should've been Dragon/Poison. Also, Mega Blastoise could've been a great Water/Steel type.

I used to be confused when I saw Ash's Noctowl being a different coloration..but that was before I knew what a Shiny Pokémon was xD

Hikamaru July 14th, 2015 7:26 PM

I have to admit it took me ages to even learn that shinies exist.

Gulpin July 14th, 2015 7:40 PM

I think I had a vague idea of them from the Red Gyarados in GSC but didn't really realize that every Pokemon had an alternate coloring. Then I ran into a blue Voltorb in Sapphire and knew that it was something significant.. If I remember, going online to see what it was may have been my first foray into the Pokemon fanbase on the internet.

Hikamaru July 14th, 2015 10:59 PM

Another problem is so many Pokemon have shiny forms that are so barely different from the original so you wouldn't even know they were shiny.

Lycanthropy July 15th, 2015 1:43 AM

18

They do show some stars when sent out of the Pokéball or when you walk into them, so that's not a real problem, unless you're not paying attention.

Gulpin July 15th, 2015 3:22 PM

19

Yeah, but I'm not paying attention half the time. I think I know well enough the normal colors of every Pokemon to be able to at least look up their shiny if I have any suspicions.
I'm always worried about missing a shiny in GSC though because the colors are so dull (and different from newer games even) that I'm not sure I would notice a minute difference.

I find it quite funny how Mega Garchomp's shiny form is a shade of pink (which makes it look slightly less intimidating in my eyes), while its non-Mega shiny form is hardly different from its original colors. xD

I believe we've moved on to Graveler now?

Hikamaru July 15th, 2015 8:35 PM

I'm on the Geodude line hate-team so still on the counting down side here.

Gulpin July 15th, 2015 8:43 PM

Yeah, I've decided to count down for Graveler. Not a big fan of its design and it doesn't have the same nostalgia associated with it that Geodude has.

I've noticed a similar thing with Charmander and Charizard, they have the same colors, but a shiny Charmander is yellow, while Charizard is black.

Looks like we may get through this one quickly since Graveler is unloved

What I find odd about Geodude's evolution line is the number of arms each evolution has, which increses, but decreases afterwards. I don't see the logic here.
