The Explorers' Guild ☼ Mystery Dungeon Club

Hello and welcome to PC's one and only Mystery Dungeon Club! Here, we will discuss all aspects about this wonderful spin-off series, in which you transform into a Pokémon, form a Team with others, and go on missions to save the world. Hooray!

Guild Regulations:
1. Follow all PC and Pokémon Clubs rules.
2. Be nice and respectful towards other members.
3. When joining, you may choose any non-evolved, non-Legendary Pokémon to represent you.
4. You will start at level 1, and gain a level for every post you make in this club, so work hard to evolve your Pokémon!
(Evolutions that work with anything other than leveling will be allowed from 20 posts on.)
5. From 40 posts on, you will be able to add another member to your team. This can be any Pokémon, also evolved ones, and your team will be listed separate from the individual members.
6. If you think you have enough posts to evolve or add a team member, please notify me and I'll check and get right on it.
7. Please try to stay active and on-topic. That doesn't mean you can't reply to other's posts, though! Discussion is promoted!
8. Smiles go for miles! Have fun!

Well, as I'm the Co-Owner, I still feel like answering the question given. If I had to choose my favourite mystery dungeon game, that'd be Gates to Infinity. It's the game which really got me into the Mystery Dungeon games, and not to forget, the all mighty feature that is called 3D.

I really liked Gates to Infinity because of its design, and because of the 3D features. The pokemon I use the most is Trubbish. Yep, you read it correctly, it's Trubbish. I really dunno why I loved it so much, maybe it was because it looked so derpy.

What is your favourite Mystery Dungeon game?
My favorite is my first and only (so far) Mystery Dungeon game... Explorers of Sky! I love the selection of Pokemon you could have for your character and partner, the music, the cute and quirky characters, the good ol' pixel art, and all that other good stuff. I remember my first playthrough like it was yesterday... I was a Skitty and my partner was a Piplup. http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m0myqi1VgT1qcfn0j.gif http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m9pdbpGWWe1qid2nw.gif

hey, Lisia! it's great to see you here (^ᴗ^) welcome to the Explorers' Guild!
i agree, Explorers of Sky is also my favourite Mystery Dungeon game. it had a great story, and i loved the large selection of Pokémon you could play as. it also improved on several things that Rescue Team could have maybe done better. still, i have to say that if you enjoyed Sky, i definitely recommend to give Rescue Team a try, too!
what did you like most about the game? and did you ever play it again after your first playthrough? c:

Finally! :D

I want to join this, but I cant choose a Pokemon lmao. I honestly cant. I noticed you're creating team names. Maybe we could add a new team member after 40th post or something like that?

Anyway,

My application:

Username: Sven
Team name: Guardians
Pokemon species: I have no freakin idea! Poochyena? Eevee? Gastly...I dont know...I'll pick later.

My favorite game...Honestly...I am not sure. One thing I loved more about Red rescue team is a story. It was more emotional and made a bit more sense. But Wigglytuff's base is such a perfect place. It has everything one could want. And the story was just a bit under the Red rescue team's. I'll go with Pokemon Explorers of Darkness for now. I am going to start a new EO Sky run and it'll probably become my favorite then. Till then, it's Darkness. I could write a book why those games were perfect so I'll leave it at this. :D

that's a good idea! i may implement that. still, i think everyone's a long way from reaching 40 posts for the time being, haha.
i gave you Poochyena for now, but i can change it any time if you want to change, ok? of course it'll keep the same level. c: that goes for everyone, by the way!

so, welcome, Sven and Dedenne! (i'm surprised you didn't pick Dedenne, haha).
i've noticed you both mention the story as your main reason for picking your favourites. i definitely think the storyline is one of the things that make the Mystery Dungeon series so great. still it's funny that you picked different games based on the same criterium!
what was the most memorable part of the story for you? put it in spoiler tags just to be sure (。 >艸<)

Oooh, mystery dungeon club! Also mimi why did you steal my DofE team name I'm going to kill you

My favorite game is definitely explorers of Sky. I haven't completed it yet due to my game card becoming corrupted (still have the save file somehwhere though), but the game was real feels trip for me. I named and chose my partner after my brother, and had him do the test. He ended up with Panphy (which is a really good partner BTW) and I ended up with Chimchar :D

You are still not accepted. Read the rules again, and post your post, then maybe we'll consider it again. (you can't have an evolved pokemon for now)

God I love dong this to my brother. It's like he's worth nothing.

That's better! Accepted! Welcome. That's it, you don't get an extra welcome.

Thanks! Alright, leave it at that for now. I kinda prefer Pooch over Eevee anyway x)

I didnt like one particular part in EO Darkness that made me prefer the older versions. Main character knew all along he was going to disappear and he said nothing about it. Then in the middle of that bridge he started to vanish and the other guy panicked for maybe 10 seconds and few moments later if was all "Oh I guess thats how it should be". Kinda unrealistic, at least compared to the first story. That particular part kinda bugged me and gave it the second place, story-wise.

Firstly thanks for the welcome!
Secondly i think its a good idea to allow an extra member to join your team but id only keep it up to 2 and idk howd they reach it haha. But anyways thanks again and
Thats always a surprise that i dont pick dedenne haha. But i love Emolga! Its in my favs and such Dedenne is also stuck in my username forever haha
Anyways spoilers.....
Spoiler:
My fav Part of Explorers of time was when they went to the future the storyline and crazy pokes there was really memorable! And i really like the cool destroyed future and everything ️unmoving! Although i still dont like Sableye for them being on the bad side and being quite the scray hunters heheh. Also meeting Primal Dialga was something but it took forever to beat him!

*gasp* Did someone say Mystery Dungeon?! I'm in! (It's my absolute favorite thing about the entire Pokémon franchise, okay?)

Username: Revise Librarian

What is your favourite Mystery Dungeon game?
That would definitely have to be Explorers of Sky. Not only did it have a massive amount of (engaging) content, but the plot writing was absolutely beautiful. I've already played through it about three times, and the game just never gets old. (I also love the wide variety of starters you can choose from as well!)

Aaand, despite loving the Explorers titles so much, I also adore Red Rescue Team with a passion. While it didn't have as much to offer as its successor, it still possessed the same engaging gameplay, and it'll always have a special place in my heart. Unfortunately, I have yet to play Gates to Infinity, but I'll try to fix that eventually!

(I would also like to point out that my avatar is from Red & Blue Rescue Team, haha.)

aah, i definitely know what you mean c: i also think the first story was maybe a bit more 'realistic'... as far as that's possible given the setting. and i thought it was a bit more endearing as well. while the story in Explorers was a lot more full of suspense and twists and wow! i think that way it also made more of an impression on most players. but i'm currently replaying Red Rescue Team (to restore my old team to its former glory!) and i have to say i'm touched by the little moments every single time (。 >艸<)
i'm also going to add the second-team member rule to the main post, now that i've had a little time to think about it, haha. thanks again for the suggestion!

Spoiler:
i definitely agree that the distorted future was a great place to visit. even before playing the game, i loved Sableye for being... kind of evil-but-cute? because of its goofy smile, mostly based on its anime counterpart. but Explorers definitely changed my opinion - they can be vicious hunters if need be!

Thanks! =D This is actually the first Pokémon club that I've ever joined, so I apologize in advance if I make any weird mistakes. xD

Hmm... tough one. I'm not exactly sure if this counts as an actual "feature," but I definitely like the gameplay mechanics above the rest! As for features exclusive to the Explorers titles, I really like how you can recruit any Pokémon right off the bat without Friend Areas. Oh, and I can't forget the super giant Treasure Bags later in the game! (Gotta love those, haha.)

I'm glad you like my suggestion! :D

I think that the main factor about the Darkness/Time/Sky is, the bonds you make, and about that Guild. I still remember walking around that Guild, reading diaries, having that freaking awesome dinners. All the characters were all soooo amazingly built in details. The family surroundings really made the game awesome. The only reason why I stopped playing Darkness cos I finally got Sky and want it to be as fresh as possible. But once Im finish it...I'll keep going back to it and I'll basically never "finish" it! On the other hand, I dont "finish" any Pokemon game, I love going back to all of them.

I found a lot of things lacked in gate of infinity though haha pretty much everything though it was to easy and the storyline wasnt great either any thoughts on this to anyone whose played?

Hey there ReadWolf! Welcome to the family!
I only played two Mystery dungeon games too, so I don't really understand all of what they're saying. You can start posting from now, even if your name isn't on the main thread. Anyways, welcome!

Coming from my experience with the old school Mystery Dungeon, I found it was a little lacking for story. But then this was from the people who make Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow in how they just threw you into a world and had you fight all the gym leaders just because. There comes a story a little ways in, like after you've done 10 or so missions? Anywho, they let you play with the mission mechanic a little before taking that all away and making you go on a wonderful journey that will wipe you off the map so many times if you have the wrong partnership. (Never try to fight Zapdos with a Pikachu and Bulbasaur. It just doesn't work). But once you were done, the outro was heartwarming (I'm not gonna spoil it!) and it moved me a bit. So it was worth all the grinding and wipes for me.

One thing I loved was the questionnaire at the beginning, that was a stroke of genius in my honest opinion.

also welcome to RedWolf98! i didn't have the time to make a post earlier but i added you to the first post at least. Gastly is a nice choice! c: and don't worry too much about having only played Rescue Team - we'll take care not to spoil anything.

i actually haven't played any of the extra episodes in Explorers of Sky! but i should really get to that, from the looks of what everyone said! (ノ>▽<。)ノ i did like the story for Rescue Team though, even though it was less elaborate than it maybe could have been.
and the personality test at the beginning of the game, combined with the wide selection of Pokémon to choose from afterwards was great! did Gates to Infinity actually still have that? does anyone who played it know? ( ´ ▽ ` )ゞ since i think you can only play 5 Pokémon in that game... sadly.

and the personality test at the beginning of the game, combined with the wide selection of Pokémon to choose from afterwards was great! did Gates to Infinity actually still have that? does anyone who played it know? ( ´ ▽ ` )ゞ since i think you can only play 5 Pokémon in that game... sadly.

You actually pick who you are and who your partner is. Theres no test and no fingerprint which i must say i dont like its no fun picking! Plus the test was extremely fun!

Meadow March 31st, 2015 3:21 PM

As much as I loved the personality test, I always found myself soft-resetting just to get Bulbasaur. xD It's pretty hard though, because not all of the questions will yield points for the nature you're looking for, even if you know exactly which answers to go with.

Yeah GtI had no test, which kinda sucked, but I got to pick Tepig with no problems. :0 Recently I started up EoS and kept resetting to get Pikachu so I could use Pikachu and Bulbasaur, I don't even especially like those two haha.

Hey there Flare, welcome to the family man!Your choice of Eevee was a really good one, as you have many evolutions to choose once you level up. I never tried Explorers of Darkness, but I reckon it'd be nice. In my opinion, Gates to infinity was the best Mystery Dungeon game.

Is that an unpopular opinion for you? I mean, how the hell wouldn't you like the 3D, it was just so amusing! I picked Snivy, and boy I liked. The only downfall to it, is that there was no mind test.

Yes, I agree completely. I originally wanted a Turtwig, but after getting Chimchar 3 times I accepted my fate and embraced the little guy <3

I don't like how gates to infinity allowed you to pick - the test was a lot more fun :D

Yay, Flare's here! =D

I honestly find it hard to imagine Bulbasaur as the partner, seeing how Bulbasaur is generally an introverted Pokémon (like the player), while the partner on the other hand is beyond extroverted. xD

Guardian April 1st, 2015 2:10 AM

I liked the personality test. I always gave me the Pokemon and Nature I agreed with. Still, I'd reset it for as long as needed until I get the one I wanted to play with.

RedWolf98 April 1st, 2015 4:54 AM

What I did was play the game the first time with the Pokemon that was selected for me (Torchick and partner was Pikachu of course) Then I tried my hardest to get Cubone but kept ending up with Pikachu so I stuck with Pikachu. That was how I came to beat Zapdos with nothing but a Pikachu and Bulbasaur. It sucked XD

Dedenne1 April 1st, 2015 7:47 AM

The question is what did everyone get when they took the personality test as your partner? And how many people rigged the personality test or tried to take it multiple times to get the pokemon you wanted?

DyingWillFlareon April 1st, 2015 11:24 AM

WELLLL
1 The first time I took it in Darkness I got Piplup and randomly chose Chikorita. Other than Dragon types, we had most types covered in our movesets, so that was great. Mostly I play with the character I get unless I've used it before.
2 I have already admitted to this. XD Sometimes I just want a specific character. :P Also Pikachu and Bulbasaur are in Team Titans. Because I was listening to Teen Ttitans stuff at the time. XD

Guardian April 1st, 2015 12:25 PM

I think I got Pikachu many times, but I wanted him as a partner so I kept resetting and googled for what I should asnwer to get the one I want.

Foxrally April 1st, 2015 12:52 PM

I got Chimchar :D He's not my favorite starter but I did the test 3-5 times and always ended up with him, so I eventually shrugged and went along with it.

Meadow April 1st, 2015 3:49 PM

I never really paid attention to the ones I got unless they were Bulbasaur, haha. I usually just take the test multiple times with a guide in front of me. xD

Dedenne1 April 1st, 2015 8:40 PM

Yay im not the only one!
For me i tried like 11 times to get a chimchar just because him and Turtwig are the top rated ones is something but i just love chimchar the best and Turtwig is great support too. I actually thought about it yesterday and began playing explorers of time again! I forgot how fun this game is but ive found that the meanest word the pokemon use in the game is "those mean stinkers!" ~your partner
Haha i wish they had just a little less censoring :p

Nagi April 2nd, 2015 2:55 AM

haha! yeah, i'm the same way with regards to soft resetting the test over and over... though it never took me too many tries to be honest c:
i always went with Eevee in Rescue Team, and Vulpix in Explorers... and i think i'd go with Snivy in Gates to Infinity. most of you have already mentioned which Pokémon they go with as player character, but let's just make this a proper topic and include some more.

Do you always choose the same Pokémon as Main and Partner? Which Pokémon are they, and why? Does it differ between games?
as for me, like i said: Eevee, Vulpix and Snivy as mains. and then, for partners... in Rescue Team, i always chose Charmander. in Explorers i've had several. the first time i chose Treecko.. so then i was really confused to find out Grovyle was actually in the story - for the longest time i thought they were secretly brothers or something (ノ>▽<。)ノ

Meadow April 2nd, 2015 10:45 AM

Do you always choose the same Pokémon as Main and Partner? Which Pokémon are they, and why? Does it differ between games?

Yes! I absolutely always choose Bulbasaur as my player, with Charmander being my partner. Their absence in Gates to Infinity is quite depressing, which is one of the few reasons I haven't played it yet. If I had a choice between the GTI starters, I would probably play as Tepig and choose Snivy as my partner.

Lycanthropy April 3rd, 2015 5:24 AM

The Mystery Dungeon series is a great series, a bit of a crossover between two awesome things: Pokémon and Dungeons and Dragons.

I have only played one Mystery Dungeon game: Red Rescue Team. This makes it quite trivial I always picked the same Pokémon. The test claimed me to be a Mudkip, which I accepted as my main Pokémon. I hadn't used Mudkip's evolutionairy family at the time and this seemed a good chance. As partner I wanted a Pokémon of one of the other two starter types, grass or fire. I picked Charmander in this place.

Nagi April 3rd, 2015 12:31 PM

welcome, H.A.N.! haha, i think your team name works great c: i just put the abbreviation in the main post for shortness' sake, but i think this way it'll leave everyone wondering what it stands for (。 >艸<)

i just noticed that all three of us picked Charmander as a partner. is he just that popular or is this a massive coincidence? (ノ>▽<。)ノ i trust he served you as well as he did me.
does anyone else have any other partner or main characters not listed? did you ever want to go for a gender-exclusive Pokémon but couldn't? c:

I'm surprisingly not a big fan of Charmander, but I always picked him as my partner (with Bulbasaur as the player) for the good old memories of my first Red Rescue Team playthrough. Plus, I always loved the picture in my avatar, as it almost makes my team feel a bit more iconic, if you know what I mean. xD

RedWolf98 April 4th, 2015 6:23 AM

The first time I ran through RRT I was Mudkip and my partner Pikachu. Then I did it like the Manga of RRT and did Torchik and Mudkip as my partner and then I did Pikachu and Bulbasaur lastly. I can admit I fudged the test a couple times, but I've never tried Charmander as a partner.

aah, i do i do! to have official art of your team is definitely a cool thing, and it makes it feel like you really accomplished something, no? c: i for example also tried to make my team iconic by kinda emulating the existing Team ACT from Rescue Team with my own 'Team ACE': Aron, Charmander and Eevee, later to become Aggron, Charizard and Espeon! i see! you've had quite the variation in teams then c: i really hope you can try out Explorers of Sky too sometime, since it added quite a few interesting playable additions, like Riolu and Shinx!

so, after the Easter hiatus it's reeeeally time for a new topic i'd say:
What is your favourite Dungeon in all of the games, and why?

I'm not sure actually. I know I wanted a grass or fire Pokémon to join Mudkip. I think I picked Charmander because Charizard would be immune to Swampert's Earthquake, which I eventually didn't learn. Charizard was a great partner Pokémon, its Heat Wave was of some great use on floors that consisted of only one room, clearing the entire floor with just one attack.

Hmm, that one's a real toughie. I can only give a rough answer until I look through all of the dungeons again, but for now I'd probably say the Temporal Tower. Due to the events that lead up to the dungeon, I usually feel a huge emotional drive to brave through it with everything I've got. Not to mention, the music feels so climatic that it gives the dungeon a more "urgent" atmosphere, which both complements its placement in the story and separates it from any other dungeon that you'd normally complete for the heck of it. As for its difficulty, I'd say it was perfectly reasonable – not too easy, but not ridiculously difficult either.

whoa, impressive! i don't think i ever managed that, but it's also cause i've never actually evolved my Charmander into Charizard yet ( ´ ▽ ` )ゞ but i'm working on it with my current playthrough of Rescue Team! it's already a Charmeleon at least, hehe.
if you were to play through Explorers of Sky (taking that example because of its larger initial selection), which Pokémon do you think you would you choose as starter and partner? c:

yeah, i totally get why the question is a difficult one - there's so many dungeons to choose from, after all! Temporal Tower is a great choice, though. i think for everyone, it's one of the most memorable dungeons, and the music as you said is great as well. there's a real sense of urgency, and because you visit it after going through all those hardships, leading up to a climax... it's definitely that much more awesome! music in the spoiler for those curious!
Spoiler:

as for me... because i'm playing Rescue Team again at the moment, i think i'll take my favourite from that game. the first one that came to mind for me (after reading yours probably, haha) is Sky Tower, since like Temporal Tower, it's kinda the climax of the game. the music i like a lot too, though it's not quite as 'epic' as Temporal Tower's. i especially like how in the beginning you can hear that bit in the background that sounds like a choir? i'm not sure that it is really, but it always reminds me of Golden Sun when i hear it, haha!
Spoiler:

secondly, i'll mention Lapis Cave. i don't know, but i like that one a lot. it is the first dungeon you get to after the story really gets going, and you have to flee from your former home with your partner. the music in Lapis Cave really suits it, with the high 'plinks' of the shimmering cave, but as times passes the music gets more and more scary and urgent as enemy Pokémon wait around every corner. luckily the dungeon itself is relatively easy to get through though, as it has few corridors and generally large rooms. c:
Spoiler:

for all those who haven't answered the topic yet, i'd really like to hear about your favourite dungeons! you don't have to go through all dungeons to give an answer - just what was most memorable to you is perfectly fine ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ

That is hard to answer. It would be either Chikorita, the only of the Pokémon from the first three generations I haven't much used in any of the games (aside Meowth, but I don't really feel like playing with Meowth as main character), or one of the fourth generation Pokémon. From that I think I'll choose Shinx. And probably either Chikorita or Turtwig as partner.

I think I choose the Western Cave from Rescue Team. It is a large dungeon with a good amount of obtainable experience on the higher floors and there appear some Kecleon Shops to rob every time.

By the way, your YouTube videos don't show up sadly.
EDIT: They're fine now.

Hearing those musics brings me completely back into the game, especially the one from the Lapis Cave. I can suddenly see the dungeons and Pokémon appear and move around in my mind just as clearly as when I'm actually playing the game. It's just scary.

woops! thanks for pointing that out. i fixed them now! c:
ah, i like it! Shinx and Chikorita or Turtwig. it's really nice to use Pokémon you haven't before and kind of get to know them, no?
you have some serious guts for robbing Kecleon Shops, though! aren't Kecleon insanely powerful? but i suppose to get to Western Cave you'd already have a very high level already, eh?

if you can see the Pokémon walking around when listening to the music, you must really be a great Mystery Dungeon fan c: great to have you on board of the club!

Wow, I can't believe Lapis Cave slipped my mind! But yeah, you're right. My heart always hurt for the player/partner whenever we traveled through that dungeon, so the emotional drive was almost as strong as the Temporal Tower's. And I can totally see why you like the Sky Tower! It gives off a certain vibe in which you know the game is going to end, but you don't want it to, haha. (Not only that, but I also thought it was one of the prettier dungeons in the series, ehehe.)

And since we happen to be talking about the music as well, I always found Craggy Coast's theme to be sooo catchy, haha. I also liked Blizzard Island's theme simply because it's a medley of the Rescue Team dungeons, which was quite nostalgic in a nice way (especially the Sky Tower part of the medley). =D

Here's the music, if anyone is interested:

True, I admit the my levels are indeed high, I'm a level 100 Swampert. I don't know about my partner, Charizard, his level was somewhat lower, but I don't know how much. Robbing Kecleon shops is a nice challenge and not even that hard when you plan your things out. First of all you must know where the stairs to the next floor are located. That is you safehouse. If the shop is next to this room, it's only a short run, but if you have to search the entire floor there's a good chance you won't survive that. Secondly you can use status moves in advance. Using agility to max out your speed even before you actually rob the shop, helps you fleeing away more quickly. But still with a level 100 Pokémon the Kecleon might provide some trouble. Their Fury Swipes can be quite strong, certainly when its stats are raised by Ancientpower. Last of all, a backup escape plan helps too. Having an Escape Orb or that one that teleports you to the stairs gets you out of troublesome situations.

I've never come close to being level 100. Devotion at its best.

DyingWillFlareon April 9th, 2015 10:36 AM

The highest level I ever got to was a level 80 something Piplup and Chikorita, but my sister had a level 100 Totodile....
But I used to rob Keckleon stores all the time. XD I'd go to Mystifying Forest and take my partner,at least two pure seeds, maybe some reviver seeds, and just go for it. Even though I rarely actually evolve the pokemkn it always felt great to get a sun stone or something haha. The fun y thing is that even if you steal an item from them, you can still sell it to them back in Treasure Town as if you found it fairly. XD

As for favorite dungeon, I'm not sure. But I can say I hate the dungeons that had no walls so Ghost types would come in. Like Azurill's Nightmare or some of the future ones in PMD2.

level 80 is still an impressive feat! i have to wonder though - why didn't you evolve your Pokémon at such high levels? surely you played out the main story by then. seeing as how you (and HAN) are also Kecleon Shop Robbers... perhaps you should be known as high-rank outlaws rather than rescuers hm?!

i recognize your annoyance with the Ghost Types though... how they can move through walls is one thing, but then they can attack you from inside the wall and you can't do anything to return fire! especially on escort missions when ghosts would sneak up on your client. ARGH

finally; since we're listening to music and all, i'd like to point you towards my latest discovery (that everyone else probably already knew, lol): Glitch City's PMD Remixes! ah, particularly this one i thought was amazingggggg. but also for example the Temporal Tower Remix was great c:

Or when you have no more Reviver Seeds and your partner keeps trying to attack a Ghost who's in the wall. And you have to say 'Woah Chikorita, I'm changing your tactic to Run Away, and taking away all your moves, you need to stop that.'

That music is so pretty!~ I like the part where it plays music

No, I never managed to do that, but it's another reason to try robbing the store. I've read it was possible, but the chance was terribly low. You needed to have a Pokémon of at least level 90 holding a Friend Bow and still then the chance was small.
EDIT: I looked it up. Having a Pokémon of at least level 90 holding a Friend Bow, will give a chance of 0.1% of recruiting a Kecleon (or 1.1% if your Pokémon has the skill Fast Friend).

Those things are really annoying, because you have to beat them, or they'll just keeping attack you. But walking away, may result them following you in the wall, so annoying. But playing as a ghost yourself, doesn't work out pretty well. Walking through walls makes you hungry very quickly and that's problematic.

Welcome to the club, Draskk!
Why shouldn't this be a thing? Mystery Dungeon might be a spin-off series, but because it shows a completely different gameplay, there's plenty of stuff to talk about.
You picked Totodile as your Pokémon. Did you play as Totodile in the games too? I remember having a Feraligatr on my team myself sometimes, I used a lot in water dungeons.

Guardian April 12th, 2015 1:49 AM

HAN you're really after evolving that Mudkip arent you lol

The most annoying Pokemon had to be Drufblim. How is that guy able to fight from across the room and how can Ominous Wind be so strong is beyond me but I remember how just seeing him made me want to soft reset the game.

Love mystery dungeon and feraligatr is my fav poke of all time so naturally I always try to get it but I also love playing as cubone in red because hes kinda op and awesome against zapdos and groudon (which are annoying sometimes) anyways always loved the dungeon crawl and great story of these games and I need to play GTI and explorers of sky but my fav game so far is EOT because everything about it was great; especially story

Actually not. Because the activity on Pokémon Clubs was a little dying, I decided to counter the post-and-go principle that's often seen around here by replying to people forcing a little conversation. I do that at other clubs too (including those which don't have a system like this).

The most annoying Pokémon in my opinion is Kingdra. It is an ultimate support. In Rescue Team you have one room floors in some dungeons where Kingdra live. They just use Agility and the whole room (equals the entire floor) and in no time you are surrounded by tons of Pokémon which keep constantly attacking you. Beating them takes so long... (Unless I brought my Charizard. One Heat Wave destroys them all. But fire Pokémon in deep seas don't sound like a clever plan.)

Meadow April 12th, 2015 10:59 AM

I personally think the most annoying Pokémon is Nidoqueen. I mean, UGH! It keeps using Earth Power spam in giant rooms where there's little to no way to counter it. <_<

I have to admit I haven't played it in a while. But the games are extremely addicting, so yes, I played it quite a lot. Still, I think the biggest Mystery Dungeon fan around here is Revise Librarian.

Hahaha, I honestly think we're all big fans of it, so let's just leave it at that. xD

But dang, your level 100s are sure more impressive than me, that's for sure. =D

thanks for getting the activity up c:
ugh, the everyone-agility issue is a serious one though. i didn't know about the one-room floors in Mystery Dungeon, but i've had the same issue with Monster Houses in regular dungeons more than once. especially when several Pokémon are able to use Agility, and at some point the entire room is at quadruple speed... but of course i'm still too stubborn to use an Escape Orb at those times.

... to be honest i don't think i've ever had much trouble with Nidoqueen ( ´ ▽ ` )ゞ but i can totally imagine your frustration. i had the same with Seedot in the Uproar Forest, where their Nature Power attack constantly turned into Earthquake. and seeing as i had a team with Charmander (2x weak) and Aron (4x weak), that was hellish indeed.

thanks much for another great music admission c: i love these remixes so much now! i don't know, especially for studying (i had an exam this morning) i really like listening to instrumental tracks. these are perfect because they also have something to get you fired up - and of course nostalgia bits, haha.

Exactly that. Using escape orbs is sometimes necessary, but I always prefer not to use it when I don't have to. Some dungeons have a lot floors and scaling them takes much time. And mostly the lower floors are the least interesting ones.

dadadadum! time for a new topic.

Who is your favourite Villain in the Mystery Dungeon series?
be careful to use spoiler tags for this question, since not everyone has played all games, and it'd be a shame to miss out on the plot twists...
it doesn't just have to be your favourite though. who was the most evil, most cunning, or even most clumsy villain? discuss!

Meadow April 17th, 2015 5:45 PM

Ah, sorry for not being active! Exam season was starting to get intense, but hopefully it should settle down within the next 2-3 weeks. =D

Who is your favourite Villain in the Mystery Dungeon series?

Spoiler:
My favorite so-called "villain" would have to be none other than Grovyle! Now I know he is eventually revealed to be a good guy, but he was pretty much framed as a villain for the entire beginning of the game. Grovyle is just a really great character who cares about saving the world, and he takes everyone's insults while not wanting to hurt them. In fact, he couldn't care less if he wasn't remembered as a hero, because the future was the most important thing of all to him. Despite knowing that the player's partner hates him, he never hesitated to help out the team, because he actually cares about them despite being silent about it.

As for the most menacing villain, I would definitely have to say Gengar. That guy was just despicable, and even though he went on a life-changing journey with the player after the beating the first story, I can't say that was enough to actually "redeem" his character. But I dunno, I guess he stopped being evil. (Oh, and this basically applies to Team Skull as well, minus the life-changing journey.)

as for my favourite villain... (spoilers for Rescue Team and Explorers only)
Spoiler:
i have to agree with you that Grovyle was definitely the most lovable villain in that sense. incredibly self-sacrificial, and just.. argh. i wish you could've recruited Grovyle in the end though!

to be honest, i thought Dusknoir was incredible though. seriously. since it's a children's game, playing it as an adult always allows you to have some insight in who the bad guy is going to be, even when a plot twist like this is waiting, no? but for Dusknoir... no. i had my suspicions right from the start - a powerful Ghost-type Pokémon like that would of course be a villain. but then, it took so long for him to do anything villainous, and all the while he was helping everyone out, and slowly but surely, he won even my trust, as an experienced player. i thought this game must have actually broken the prejudices that starter pokemon are always good and ghost/dark types are evil! ... but then, when he pulled the player characters into the future like he did, i was completely baffled. he betrayed us. man, for that reason i wish i could go back in time and play the game blind again, haha! the FEELS.

ahem.
with regard to Gengar... i actually thought he was annoying more than anything else at first, but i have to say in the end i kinda liked how his whole change in character was dealt with. he wasn't obvious about it, but helped the player out little by little, and i thought that was cool. thanks, Gengar.
Team Skull was kinda in the same boat as Team Meanies in the end, but as much as i liked the concept of them, they really didn't redeem themselves as an evil group as much as Gengar did in my eyes. (also i was so confused when Medicham from Team Meanies was suddenly in Team Charm in the next game (ノ>▽<。)ノ )

don't worry about being inactive for a while... but do remember to check in every now and then! i'll get lonely without you all! c:

DyingWillFlareon April 21st, 2015 3:54 AM

Favorite villains? Sheesh I hate those guys let's see....

Spoiler: This one has Gates to Infinity
RRT- I've only played through once, and couldn't remember the whole game if I tried, plus I only got to the end and haven't glne through postgame yet.... I guess I'll have to say Gengar? Unless you'd like Caterpie or something? :P

EoD- Of course I agree 100% about Grovyle. And Dusknoir was a pain in the butt the first playthrough..... Ahh blind runs...~
But I'm giving this title to the postgame villain Darkrai. He sets you up to fail in time, which was what turned you into a Pokemon in the first place. When that plan fails, he tries to get rid of you through space, and this time even reveals himself to you, er, sorta. When even the second time fails, he straight up challenges you, and when you get to him on Dark Crater or whatever it's called, and traps you in a nightmare, from which you must break out of to protect your partner.
All in all, Darkrai in this game is the embodiment of pure evil, making it ok to flat out hate this guy. Well, I'd still like to know what happened to him after Palkia.....
Twam Skull are just buttheads lol. But they're our buttheads.......

GtI- Let's see..... the one you would think was the bad guy is my favorite character in that game, other than my patner. XD But I guess I'll say the Bittercold. It isn't a Pokemon, yet it takes forever to beat. I love the cutscenes around it, that's probably why I like it. >.<
Ok you know what I'm just saying Emolga, he's a brat at the beginning. XD

My favorite? Probably gunna say Hydreigon!

I've played Pokémon Blue Rescue Team and Pokémon Explorers of Sky, Sky being my favorite installation. :333 Riolu was my favorite starter Pokémon, and Munchlax was my partner. God I loved the ost and storyline, along with the nearly endless post-story content. I must have played that game for hundreds of hours, and started it over a lot, the PMD games were what introduced me to the Pokémon games, so I have a lot of sentimentality attached to them, haha.

it seems most people have at least played one of the Rescue Team games c: which is good, cause i think they're still the best first encounter with the PMD games. allows you to enjoy the improvements made in Explorers to the max (。 >艸<)!
i'm not sure i understood you correctly, but it sounds like these games were also the first games that you played in the entire Pokémon franchise as well, correct? that's really amazing, i think! how did you feel about the main series games after being introduced to such different gameplay at first? and do you like the PMD or main series games more now? just curious, hehe.

Yup :) PMD Red Rescue team was my first ever Pokemon game!
At first, I didn't understand the mechanics of PMD but overtime, I enjoyed it. as for the transition from PMD to the main games, it was easy because they both have elements that were similar.

I definitely agree! I played the Rescue Team games a ton, but once I began the Explorers, I was absolutely hooked (being able to change your team name, and assemble such diverse teams won me over haha).

And yes! The PMD games were what introduced me to the Pokémon franchise (albeit, I did have some cards). After playing the Rescue Team games, I quickly bought a copy of Pokémon Diamond and started watching the show, lol. Playing the main series after getting used to the PMD style and mechanics wasn't all that disorienting, actually. I caught on quickly, and the PMD games probably made me more prepared for the moves, strengths of different Pokémon, etc. I think that both series have their different charms and appeals, so I can't really compare them! I'd definitely say that I love them both though, albeit for different reasons.

That's a tough one. I guess I'd go with the Marine Resort, because it's a beach and it has cool Pokémon. From the main plot it's probably Crystal Crossing, that one looked pretty cool and the music was nice.

Do you always choose the same Pokémon as Main and Partner? Which Pokémon are they, and why? Does it differ between games?
No, I rarely use the same Pokémon in any of the games. The first one I "chose" was Turtwig with Totodile, then came Chikorita and Charmander, Treecko and Piplup and at last Eevee and Shinx. Yeah, many grass types, but I love this type and these were all just the results of the questions. Except for Treecko, that one was deliberate, because I thought it'd fit the story, considering the whole business with Grovyle. But it is funny, since the game gave me two of my favorite Pokémon (Chikorita and Eevee) this way. The one I liked most was the combination of Eevee "the Beast" and Shinx, though.

What is your favourite Mystery Dungeon game?
I've played Explorers of Time, Blue Rescue Team and Explorers of Sky in that order. My favorite was Sky, hands down. The story was already gripping in Time, but the bonus episodes were just the cherry on top. I absolutely love it and it's also my favorite Pokémon game in general.

Well, in the special episodes it will probably Spring Cave. In the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon - Red/Blue Rescue Team, it's Mt. Freeze. Spring Cave because that's the Dungeon Sunflora explored to apprehend those three, villainous Haunters. Mt. Freeze because I love its music because it's so cool and that's where I got to meet Articuno, and Articuno is special to me!

Welcome to the club Dots! Since we really havent had a topic in a while to discuss i have a question for everyone since atm im playing explorers of time and id like to know what other peoples opinions are;
In the Mystery Dungeon games a new aspect was created of linking moves that you may have learned about farther in the the storyline. Did you ever link moves? If so did you like it and do it regularly with your partner pokemon and such? If not why?

I personally did it once and never did it again idk why just i guess the aspect confused me at first and once i played a game without it i never felt a need to do it again. Thoughts on this?

Guardian April 27th, 2015 11:34 AM

I completely forgot about that. That was seriously one AWESOME feature. Realistic and useful. I linked Fire attacks of my Charmander.

Yes... I do link moves. (Ehehe... talking like a regular person when being interviewed...) In Sky, I, as a Riolu, linked Foresight and Force Palm. Well, since Fighting-types won't work on Ghost-types, I use Foresight. This also helped me to beat Darkrai since he has Double Team... it was annoying that my attacks kept missing...! As for my partner, a Chickorita, I linked her Sweet Scent and Razor Leaf. (Well, Razor Leaf DOES have a miss chance) So that way, using Sweet Scent, the foes can be easily hit.

I linked moves all the time. the problem, though, was that it drained a lot of my hunger in explorers of time, and I'd always die if not for the hunger-suppressing scarf.

Nagi April 28th, 2015 3:17 AM

i'm so sorry for neglecting this club the past week! but a big thanks to Dedenne for coming up with such a great new topic c:

also, a very warm welcome to Tora and IamDots! it's funny to read that you picked Treecko since it'd tie in with the story nicely. i picked Treecko as my partner on my first playthrough, completely oblivious to the story, so i spent all of my time convinced they were secretly brothers or something (ノ>▽<。)ノ
to IamDots... i'm afraid i cannot allow you to choose Shaymin as your representative Pokémon - it cannot be a legendary. i'd love for you to choose another, though!

finally, i'll answer this topic as well!
In the Mystery Dungeon games a new aspect was created of linking moves that you may have learned about farther in the the storyline. Did you ever link moves? If so did you like it and do it regularly with your partner pokemon and such? If not why?
to be honest, i don't link moves very much. i'd only ever link a damage dealing move to a non-damage dealing move, since else i probably wouldn't ever use the non-damaging move. but i'd never link more than two moves together, not even for a boss fight as i've heard many do. this is mainly because i always have my team members be Exclusive Move Users (IQ skill), to make sure i always get the double experience from beating enemy Pokémon. a drawback however is that i tend to run out of PP very fast - and of course even more so when your moves are linked! so, that's why i don't link much, hehe.
still - i think the concept of linking moves in itself is great, and allows me to use moves that i would otherwise skip, like stat-boosting moves. you also mentioned a bunch of great examples, specifically the Foresight and Force Palm combination. that's so smart! (。 >艸<)

It was certainly an interesting feature, but I rarely made use of it, as it drained twice the PP. I used it sometimes before facing a hard boss battle, because attacking thrice in one turn is extremely overpowered, but I delinked them afterwards, as it wasn't really necessary on regular floors.

Tried it, so yup :)

I didn't it was too much PP consuming, it wasn't necessary when your on easy dungeons because the first move usually kills the 'mons

No I usually don't I often just answer the questions honestly and hope that it gives me a great pokemon. I usually get Torchic or Charmander while I usually pick Pikachu it always depends on what type I'm using and how cute they look..

Occasionally, yes.
Usually with moves like Leer/Scratch. My most recent team CyndaquilxPikachu do not have any moves I'd consider linkable, so they haven't gotten that privledge. XD

it's funny to see that some of us have really gone wild with the link feature, to the point of them dying of hunger, while others haven't used it much at all because of its usurping of PP. i wonder if it's really due to different playstyles? c:
also since we're talking about linking moves, what are some moves that you found most useful in the Mystery Dungeon games? maybe a move that had a surprisingly different effect than what you were used to in the main series games, for example?

Yes I've linked moves in my games with almost all my pokemon. It makes the whole exploring part a bit easy in my case. And it makes you conscious of what moves you use because it might break. It makes the whole PMD Series unique imo

Well, I find Baton Pass a fun move! All Pokémon on the room, including the user, will switch places. Wow, that reminds me of a party game. I find AncientPower a useful move since it can raise all stats at once and a majority of Pokémon learns this early! (ex. Kabuto, Phanpy, etc.)

I liked long range move it felt fun using moves like flamethrower and beating enemies off screen. I felt like I was a sniper or something haha

Sometimes I linked things like Leer + Scratch, if they had around the same amount of PP (or the status move had more), yes, but no two attacking moves and it didn't happen very often. In my first plays I totally forgot about that. I didn't even know until now that your hunger could decrease from using this feature.

Oh, yes. Waay too many. Bullet Seed would be the first that comes to mind. It was so overpowered, being able to kill more than one opponent if they were all standing in a row. In my first play through, when I didn't have a move that hit the whole room it was my best attack.
Absorb/Mega Drain are also worth mentioning. If you were low on health, just absorb whatever was in front of you, get the Overgrow-boost and bring yourself to full health while defeating the enemy in front of you, even if it resisted you. I rarely used Giga Drain, because that one had not enough PP.
Then of course Silver Wind, Ominous Wind, Earth Power, Discharge and so on, even though they were even more annoying if an enemy used them.
Beat Up was nice, I had that on my Houndoom and activated it whenever the whole party was scattered all over the floor after a trap or similar nonsense, so they'd be teleported to wherever Houndoom was. Especially helpful if I had a weak client wandering around on its own.
And some boosting moves I never use in the main series, but quite liked in Mystery Dungeon are Agility (for obvious reasons) and Helping Hand. I kept that one on my Eevee for quite a while, just to boost my whole team's attack stats for a boss fight.
I also kept Tackle on Eevee as its main attacking move, because it had a huge amount of PP and was ridiculously strong due to STAB and Adaptability.

I have a question... to all of you, my fellow guildmates...

If you were directly in a Pokémon Mystery Dungeon game, will you talk to someone? If you do, who will you talk to and what will you say?
(Any game would be nice!)

Nagi May 3rd, 2015 1:44 PM

wow, i didn't even know about some of these. Baton Pass and Beat Up for example, i've never gotten to use, but they seem really useful indeed!
similar to Tora, i also kept Tackle and Helping Hand on my Eevee for a very long time, since they were quite powerful c: i also liked Quick Attack since it allowed you to cut corners and attack from one square further, hehe. and i totally get feeling like a sniper if you kill an enemy that was still off-screen too! so you basically mean... if we could meet anyone from the PMD games, who would we want to meet and what would we say? well then, i'd definitely like to meet Wigglytuff! he seems like such a weirdo, haha. but still it'd be interesting to get to know him better, i suppose.
i'd also like to meet Chatot, for some advice on how to run my own guild (RP) better (。 >艸<)

Hi there! I'm so sorry I haven't been posting here in the longest time hahaha, but hopefully that's about to change! (I haven't been able to do much on PC lately, but that problem will be fixed once I get over a few obstacles. =D)

Anyway, I know there are three topics floating around at the moment, but I'll answer one and get back to the rest later on.

Heck, yeah! I absolutely abused that system to no end, haha. Even though it came with a huge drawback in that we'd waste PP if we only wanted to use one of those moves, I felt that linking moves was a vital part in fighting large numbers of Pokémon with a small team. The ability to attack twice in one turn is game changing, and it has incredible use when dealing with Monster Houses. Sometimes I would link stuff like Leech Seed and Toxic together, while other times I would combine a status move with an attacking move or even two attacking moves if I was going for an aggressive strategy. It's never a bad idea to keep a Link Box handy so that you could unlink moves and then re-link two different moves to help flow with the current situation.

I never really thought of linking Leech Seed and Toxic, since both seemed kind of useless in these games. Did you use them just for boss battles or also for random enemies?

As for the question:
If you were directly in a Pokémon Mystery Dungeon game, will you talk to someone? If you do, who will you talk to and what will you say?

I'd want to talk to Grovyle and Celebi and ask them for details about living in the future for a fanfiction. Also, if I had the opportunity to meet Spinda, I'd take it. I mean, come on. He seems pretty fun.

no worries about the absence, but it's good to have you back! c:
like Tora, i'm quite surprised at the combo of Toxic and Leech Seed. but i suppose it's a way to passively defeat enemies? i'd also really like to hear what kind of enemies you'd use it for (。 >艸<)
haha, i never used Link Boxes much either c: but i'm glad to hear that some people made good use of the linking system and accompanying features!

hm, interesting suggestions as well! c: Spinda is kinda similar to Wigglytuff in sillyness, so i understand why you'd want to meet him. try one of his gummi juices maybe... and i'd totally read that fanfic of yours
