So, my search for a desktop is pretty much at a halt now that I have a hard drive dock for the drive. So far, it's done good to at least let me get my music library back up and running. :)

*is now looking for good mobile broadband deals in his home country*
Ah, so many things done today. A lot of cancellations, a lot of planning ahead... Sometimes I wish I could take my time with tech stuff, too. (I think I'll probably also get a new tablet.) |

I do want to get an Android phone sometime this year as well. Hmm, I'm looking at you Moto G. By the way guys, C&T's rules have been rewritten from scratch, so check those out if you haven't already. :) |

It's also important to note that Microsoft is, surprisingly, one of Google's direct competitors in Android. Not only do they make a healthy profit on Android sales, they're also one of the official partners for CyanogenOS now, and you'll start seeing CyanogenOS devices ship with Microsoft alternatives to Google offerings. Also for user data. The more people use Bing, the more data Microsoft has to improve Bing and offer relevant advertising options to bring in revenue. The introduction of Cortana just creates an additional mechanism for Microsoft to collect and use user data. |
I'm pondering about getting a desktop keyboard that is designed for gaming soon, as I think I will probably change my laptop into a funny-looking desktop. Thoughts?

If you do a lot of typing (or coding), you might look into getting a mechanical keyboard, which will offer significant benefits over a typical keyboard (and the built-in keyboard).

As for where the laptop should be located... Hmm... How should it be located relative to the monitor, keyboard, and mouse, when it's being used as a makeshift desktop rig? I'd want to have some clearance at both sides, especially on the right, as the optical drive is on the right side, and the exhaust vents are on the left side. I'd like them to be clear. I suspect I'll get a Razer gaming keyboard that's also mechanical. Goes along with my current setup, and I've also personally used one of them, too. |
Mechanical keyboard? Oh god, one of those will make my friends on Skype when we have our calls complain more while I type :P
Anyways. Don't you just hate it when you have tech problems for the longest of time, and the solution is a simple fix? Well, for me, my Wi-Fi had been so slow these past few weeks, and I wasn't sure why. Turns out, a channel change fixed the problem and now I have back to what I should be getting. :) http://www.speedtest.net/result/4392328368.png EDIT: For the sake of curiosity, a ping test as well: http://www.pingtest.net/result/124004814.png |
Changing the channel is a pretty good bet if you live in an a residential area with a lot of wireless networks in range.
Not all mechanical keyboards are 'clicky.' Mine has Cherry MX Blue switches, so it makes a lot of noise, but there's a lot of response. You also have the option of the Cherry MX Switches, which feel like Blue switches, but lack the mechanical click noise. There are a good number of variations of switches that you can get, tailored to your own preferences. Otherwise, most keyboards that aren't mechanical aren't too different from the ones built into laptops, so there is little gain to using them, unless you want the extra keys or want to use the laptop with the lid closed (with a monitor). |

If you want some brands to look for anyway, ones that I have had good experience with, in no particular order, are Corsair, Cooler Master(advertised as CM storm), Ducky, Steelseries and Razer (do note that Razer has recently started using their own switches instead of the market standard Cherry MX switches) |
Come on, nothing beats a s'more keyboard you guys! :P

Logitech has a new mechanical keyboard that I tried the other day and I really like. It's the G910 Orion Spark, and the keys feel really great and it's actually super quiet for a mechanical keyboard. Unfortunately, it's also $179.99, which is insane for a keyboard. @[email protected]
I'm hoping the G710+ drops in price to about $60-70 and I'd be tempted to pick one of those up. They have the O-rings pre-installed so it's considerably quieter than a stock mechanical keyboard, though still not as quiet as the G910. |
Quote:
I'd recommend going for either Razer or Logitech. I've heard some good things about Corsair, Das and Steelseries as well. |
Logitech has certainly been my go-to brand for years, and it's probably the same for many more of y'all if I had to guess.
|
I think Corsair is a really nice brand, actually. They have nice mouses, keyboards, computer case fans, and even cases themselves - some of their cases are really cool, and if I ever build a PC it will almost definitely have a Corsair case.
|
Been meaning to buy a laptop mouse sometime this weekend or my next paycheck. Because my touchpad is acting all...dumb. Plus why am I even using the freaking touchpad, anyways?
Logitech is a pretty good brand. I have a headset. |

I dunno, I might become an extreme cheapskate and turn my laptop into a desktop.
Or maybe I won't even bother with that. A 15.6" display with the keyboard laid out exactly like a laptop and a mouse? Sounds perfect to me. It's really compact. In the meantime, I think I'll keep browsing through product guides on various Windows machines. Still looking for the perfect tablet, and apparently the other Cherry Trail-based Windows tablets that aren't the Surface 3 are more expensive for some reason. |
Quote:
It really all depends on personal preference, but I think I would want a mechanical keyboard and a separate screen if I were in your position and had the money to spare. |
Quote:
A desktop does take up a whole lot of space, though, especially if you opt for a non-ITX build. |

There's a whole lot of cabling behind the desk, and there's a router and a printer beside my laptop right now. Perhaps I should try rearranging them. |

So I finally got my new PC and oh my god it's so much better than the toaster laptop I was using beforehand. Feels good, man. Feels good. https://i.warosu.org/data/cgl/img/0070/76/1378082107208.jpg |
No one seems to be inclined to make a compelling Windows tablet that has an Atom x7 that's also a better value than the Surface 3...
At this rate, I think I'll just go ahead and get a Surface 3 if things don't "improve" by early August. |

Unfortunately, that tablet is business-focused, and you know what happens to the price and amount of tablet/$. |

From what I can tell from news sites, Computex seems to have a few of the Cherry Trail Atoms around. Asus, HP and an Android from Acer, but I'm waiting for some more coverage. I'm very excited about Computex in general, but the problem with trade shows is that you never quite know when it will actually hit the market. |
Quote:
I find the Surface 3 to be just perfect in terms of what I want from a tablet, and I intend to just cough up the money for the whole thing - 4 GB RAM, 128 GB storage, a matching Type Cover, and a pen. Maybe even a screen protector. Should make for a nice secondary PC. |
Quote:
|
If a Surface was within my budget, I'd most definitely get one. Too bad it's not, because I would really like to have one.
|
Now, if only I got to build both a nice desktop and a Surface 3 that's fully decked out...
Too bad that won't happen. Right? |
Quote:
Too bad no one else makes tablets that nice, or charge even more for an inferior product. (I'm looking at you, Lenovo.) |
Quote:
Lenovo really should reconsider their desktop warranty terms. A significantly higher percentage of their desktop PCs come with only 1 year of warranty service and packs less extras than the competition - I'd have to buy an i7 just to get 3 years. Then again, maybe that's why they can price their products so low. I think I'll stick with my choice of Surface 3 as my next tablet purchase. |
We were thinking about getting my mom a Surface 3 to replace her gen 1 Surface RT, it was slightly out of budget at the time. But she's probably also fine with a laptop if thats cheaper if there's any good ones.
Speaking of laptops.. I have really low space xD Like 0-6MB free, I got the disk clean-up pop up, should've freed 2GB, but seems to took up more space as I had 80MB or 11MB. I also had 11GB just a few days ago and I haven't downloaded/installed anything. I need to go through my mess of files and delete delete delete. |
Lately, I've been playing with my Dell Venue 8 Pro a little more recently, and trying to figure out how I could use it to its maximum purpose. Too bad the thing doesn't seem to want to connect to the wifi at my college, despite me being right under the hotspots and having full bars. :|
|
Quote:
You're playing it dangerously close with that amount of "free" space! You really should clean up now - anything can go wrong on a system drive that's basically full. Try to leave at least 2 GB of free space on the system drive. Hopefully, you have somewhere for the extra files to go to. Quote:

Next time, if it doesn't connect, try turning off the tablet, wait for about 10 seconds, and turn it back on. See if it connects. |

Do you have an external hard disk drive? Consider changing your backup regimen so that it backs up to an external drive. Backing up files to the same drive means nothing in terms of backing up - you technically only made duplicates of the same file on the same drive, wasting space. That way, you'd have 250 GB of extra free space just from moving the backups out. (Norton 360 backups?) Also, you should also consider moving these video files out. Just saying. |

Might want to fix that first before continuing. |

If you're using Windows 8.1, disable it and use Windows' own File History instead. It should store only changed files after the first run. If you're running Windows 7, set up its backup feature. It's less convenient and robust compared to File History, but it still works. |

I did get a blue screen tonight, but pretty sure thats because my brother decided to hold down my power button while I was using it, using the button usually gives a blue screen on my laptop. |
Hey guys, how's it going in here? :)
So somehow or another, my phone seems to be able to bypass the fact that Wi-Fi here at this hotel is supposed to be paid for, yet I'm able to access it for free. It's only my phone though since my iPod Touch doesn't allow for me to bypass it. |
In what way do they restrict the access to those who haven't paid?

I just got the TP-Link Archer D5 to replace the extremely underperforming ISP-supplied modem-router.
That has to be the best ~$101 that I've ever spent.
I got the D5 instead of the D7 or D9 since, well, pretty much nothing can really make use of the higher-speed capabilities, and I find no need for beam-forming since the house is small enough in area that it's not really necessary. Even right next to the front and back doors, all the devices are attaining their maximum possible speed, or close to it, while maintaining at least four bars of signal strength, and no dropouts. Real file transfer speeds over 802.11n has also improved significantly - it went from about 30 Mbps to 105 Mbps. Now to see if it can maintain at least one week of uninterrupted up-time... the old router needed to be reset every two days or so. |
Quote:
With that said, I think my next router will have to be one that supports some sort of custom firmware, be it DD-WRT, OpenWRT or Tomato, because I would love to try and see if that will improve the experience. I've heard a lot of praise of Tomato in particular, but none of the routers in my closet support it... |
This reminds me of the last days I had DSL... I could never go a day without resetting the modem by turning it off/on. At least back then, I had 100% chance of changing my IP if I ever needed to do that.

Custom firmware isn't that important - at least, for TP-Link routers, from what I've heard. Most "normal" people probably won't even need custom firmware, so long as the stock firmware is being maintained. (Unfortunately, a lot of router vendors forget about the "maintenance" part after a few months...) Quote:

I've never had any trouble with my router, so far. It's never really been turned off, and I've never had to reset it I don't think. I don't remember if I have. Mine wasn't supplied by my ISP though, and has no language settings, meaning I have to read all the settings in German, making it very difficult to port forward, for example.

Now question. Since I'm running a Custom Rom and whatnot (Carbon to be exact), what other steps would I be taking? I'm guessing that installing a framework is nowhere near the same as just booting to custom recovery and flashing over an image. |

*Le sigh* Oh Windows 8.1, will I ever grow to actually like you. </3 Been having this annoying problem in that, whenever I put my laptop into hibernation, after I turn it back on it's almost impossible to instantly resume web browsing, as something funky seems to go on with the wifi receiver. I know it's something small in the grand scheme of things but the way I see it, I never once had this problem with previous laptops and I usually have to restart the wifi driver to get it working again. Time to go googling, I guess.

That's just it. Not only are there problems, but the computer seemed strange about me uninstalling drivers. I'd go to do it, but nothing would happen...I'm half thinking will I go back to the shop with this comp, as I've only had it a few months and I think it's still under warranty.

It seems like Windows is no fan of someone playing around with multiple image files. I was extracting frames from a couple videos and got a couple folders which all contained ~40000, which I then had to sort out for specific pictures I wanted to keep. As a result I had to delete a good amount of images.
My Explorer crashed multiple times and sometimes I even got errors when I deleted all those files. {XD} |
