The Prism Cup (Challengers Welcome)

With the unanimous support of our members, I'm proud to finally announce the 3DS Division of the Prism League's first tournament, The Prism Cup!

The premise of the tournament is simple. Leaders and Elites will retain their typings from the Prism League proper, and challengers can pick two the available types in our list on a first come, first serve basis:

Typing List

The Trainer who receives the Prism Cup, as well as the 2 runners up, will receive some very rare Pokemon including shinies, event-only legends and hidden abilities, and generation-locked level up moves such as Extreme Speed and Defog that are breedable in the current generation. Due to the number of them, I've also committed the prizes to a spreadsheet:

Prizes

Rules Unique to the Cup:

Spoiler:
- Participants may select a different team for each round of the tournament, based on their opponent's typing, dissatisfaction in previous matches, etc. This is allowed in order to provide a concession to typing underdogs (Dragon and Ground vs. Ice and Fairy, as an extreme example), as well as format fluidity for all typings. Nonetheless, we all have our signature Pokemon that we run, and should you be suspected of counter teaming against those signatures, you will be disqualified.

- Since we are all type-locked, participants will be permitted to use type-changed Mega Evolutions so long as the final form includes one of their chosen types. EX: if a participant's types are Fairy and Electric, they may use Mega Audino. The Pokemon will be required to mega evolve during the match, failing to do so will result in an automatic disqualification.

- Each participant will declare a preferred format (Doubles and Singles are allowed). Should your format match your opponent's, that will be the format for the match. If you do not have a preference, the battle will be in your opponent's preferred format. Should a disagreement arise, or if neither opponent prefers a particular format, the match's format will fall to a coin toss: Heads for Doubles, Tails for Singles.

- Each round will last for a single week. You will be responsible for coordinating with your opponent to secure a match within this time frame. Results will be tallied at 22:00 MST the on the final night of each round (Friday). If results have not been posted by 22:00 the night prior to conclusion (Thursday), a participant may claim their opponent absent for the match. The opponent will have until the end of the round to contest their absence. In the event that the absence is contested, victory will fall to a coin flip. Otherwise, the participant who attended the match will win by default.

- More to be declared, this is open to discussion.

League Standard Rules:

Spoiler:
-All battles are 6v6

-This league will be using most of Smogon's ORAS OU rules, which can be found here.

-All Pokemon on this list are banned from both divisions. Any challengers who use these Pokemon will be disqualified.

-Dark Void is banned in all Double battles.

-Both league members and challengers must save all battle videos and post them here so we can confirm a challenger's victory.

-In the event of a disconnect, attempt to battle again, unless it is clear who the winner was. Take a picture of your PSS screen immediately after the battle ends as proof of who was the one to disconnect.

-Follow all the rules of the PokeCommunity.

Registration opens today and will end on May 16th or when no more types are available, whichever comes first. Please respond with your preferred battle format in order to be counted. Challengers, please include your selected typing as well.

The tournament's first round will begin on May 30th! Let's hit the breeding ground and get those teams started, folks.

Polar Spectrum April 29th, 2015 7:43 PM

I'll take it! InnnnnnnnnNNNNNNN HO

Edit: I've been instructed to include my preferred format in this post. :J

In case you all didn't know.

It is triples

lol no it's doubles, double battles.

Charcoal Embers April 29th, 2015 8:01 PM

Looks like I am going to be with the big boys/girls here. XD Hope I don't choke and mess up. XD

While I prefer Singes, Doubles is never not an option. And I will be using the Grass and Normal Types.

skyburial April 29th, 2015 8:04 PM

Aaaaaand I should mention that my preferred format is Doubles.

ScraggyTrainer April 29th, 2015 8:07 PM

Definitely in. I would like to use fairy/fire and my preferred format is doubles

rob_thijs April 29th, 2015 8:13 PM

My preferred format is not singles and hell no not doubles. I'm going for the Triple Battles. GLHF

Or I'm I just a fool and do I have to choose between doubles and singles?

Hey Scraggy, if you want to use this typing you will have to officially switch to it through the main Prism League thread and go through the approval process. You'd be joining this tournament as a leader with your Psychic/Fairy typing until then.

I updated the rules to accommodate players without a preference :)

rob_thijs April 29th, 2015 8:47 PM

Will the format be declared some time before the battle start? Let's say your team is for Singles but you have to do a Double battle cause your opponent wins the toss.
You opponent clearly has an advantage cause the team for singles probally would not have support moves and protect on them.

This was one of the primary reasons behind the match selection clause:

"Participants may select a different team for each round of the tournament..."

I'd invite you to prepare Pokemon for both Doubles and Singles should you pursue the no-preference option. I'll announce the new matches in the same post as each round's tally.

Going to be a lot of fun!

Woot! Singles as your preferred format, right?

Blueboi22 April 29th, 2015 9:20 PM

Count me in. Singles FTW

Krystia April 29th, 2015 10:18 PM

wait, are we using our own league type or we can choose?

Nah April 30th, 2015 3:17 AM

We made a separate thread for this?

Anyway, I guess I can't not be in this, so......

And yeah, Singles is preferred format

Charcoal Embers April 30th, 2015 3:58 AM

I'm just glad I got such a versatile type. I have TONS of options with normal. I already have a nice Combo for doubles that I like. :P

skyburial April 30th, 2015 5:54 AM

Folks, I am working on getting together some prizes for the players who place in the top 3. They'll be Pokemon that are difficult to obtain in the current generation. I can personally contribute Extreme Speed Dratini, Defog Scyther, and Chimchar and Timburr with Iron Fist. I'm waiting to hear back from some breeders, shoot me a message if you'd like to contribute to the winners' pot.

As ScraggyTrainer demonstrated above, leaders/members will use their assigned typings as of the final date to register. Challengers, who aren't normally type-locked, are allowed to choose from the remaining types so that they can participate.

The subject didn't really conveniently fit into league challenges or discussion of league rules, and I didn't want a lot of cross talk happening between this and other league matters.

ScraggyTrainer May 1st, 2015 8:29 AM

I can offer a modest ev trained 6 iv shiny male Gardevoir for a prize if I can get it cloned. I also have Shiny adamant ev trained Terrakion (not sure ivs) and Shiny 3 iv adamant entei. Wonder trade is a great place

skyburial May 1st, 2015 9:55 AM

I was going to breach the subject of prizes but it looks as though Scraggy gets to have that pleasure :)

I threw out the idea a few days ago of awarding the 3 players who place in Gold, Silver, and Bronze in the Prism Cup with Pokemon that are hard to find in Generation VI (previous Gen moves, Event-only, etc.) and the results have been astounding. We've got a total offering of 22 mons and counting, folks. Legends will be reserved for 1st place and the breedables will be dispersed among the 3 highest placing participants.

I'm editing a spreadsheet into the OP of everything we've received so far. Rob and Dylan, if you could please provide me with either your Gmail addresses or the missing details in your sections of the sheet.

Major shout out to Cakesu, whose generosity knows no bounds.

ScraggyTrainer May 1st, 2015 10:34 AM

All of mine are Kalos born. The Gardevoir has Trace for an ability. Gardevoir's ivs are erfect, Terrakion's ivs are perfect except for defense, and the Entei has 31 in Defense, Special Attack, and Sp Defense. The Entei's evs are 252 atk, 252 speed, 4 hp. Terrakion has 252 atk, 252 speed, and 6 Sp Atk (I think, not trained by me). Gardevoir has 24 def, 232 Sp atk, and 252 speed. Anything else you need to know?

skyburial May 1st, 2015 10:49 AM

Does the Gardy have any egg moves?

rob_thijs May 1st, 2015 10:52 AM

I think the prices should be discussed in a PM or VM.

Yeah I suppose. If you have new prizes post them here and then we can discuss them and old prizes in a PM. That sound good?

skyburial May 1st, 2015 11:23 AM

I am in agreement. Also, if anyone else has prizes to contribute, it will only make victory that much sweeter.

PicPax May 1st, 2015 7:29 PM

I assume this is where I post? Well, my preferred Battle Format is Singles and I decided that I would use my two favorite Types; Poison and Steel. Let's just hope I don't come across 20 Garchomps.

TGM May 1st, 2015 7:33 PM

I'll be participating.

My preferred battling type is doubles.

Welcome to the League! I don't think TGM will be bringing a Garchomp, but should you and I lock horns, I will be sure to stretch the muscle that hurts you the most ;) So far he and I are the only 2 participants who can use Garchomp.

Looks like Cyclone is the last to confirm. I asked if he'd be willing to contribute any crown jewels from his collection to our prize list as well. Otherwise, we are nearing our sweet spot for registrants - ideally, I'd like to get 16 (see the link for the brackets where I've illustrated the tournament with 16 battlers). We can accomodate 18, so that will be the hard cutoff, but 16 will allow everyone to participate in Week 1, whereas 18 will require certain members to wait until week 2 for their first battle.

Just curious in the description it says it's not allowed to counter opponents signature pokémon. Now I have nothing against that.

I'm just here because I would like to know what are your favorite and signature pokémon?

I think a lot of people here can guess mine:P

skyburial May 3rd, 2015 4:58 PM

Guh, One hour of editing later
OKAY FOLKS, Rub Thighs has upped the ante and committed about a dozen additional prizes to the pot, and Zekrom has made some contributions as well. The spreadsheet has been updated, we now have 35 prizes and counting.

Gallade, Slowking, and Crobat, yeah?

Mine are Altaria, Excadrill, Swampert and Goodra these days.

Zagan May 3rd, 2015 5:53 PM

The one thing I have about the not counter teaming someones signature mon (an interesting idea to be sure) is what if someone has not stated what the signature mon is, but later trys to call someone out on it?

This question confuses me.

skyburial May 3rd, 2015 6:26 PM

It's really hard to call someone out on counter teaming. It comes down to how familiar the opponents are with each others' teams. It would be very easy, for example, for Polar Spectrum and I to counter each other, because we've battled each other upwards of 2-300 times since October.

At the same time, it's equally difficult for one of us to "counter team" the other because we know the secret threats and are usually prepared for each others' shenanigans.

rob_thijs May 3rd, 2015 6:32 PM

I need clearance to see the prize file ?:P

Oh, I'm sorry, I never noticed the link in the PM I last received. I can go ahead and join up with this tournament idea; I'm going to swap back to my computer tomorrow and get my Skype going again so it's easier to reach me quickly. I've been doing a lot of Bulbapedia editing of late, so my activity pretty much everywhere else on the Web has declined somewhat.

I heard about Shinies being suggested to add to the pot. If me cloning it isn't minded at all, I can offer the 4IV Shiny Torchic I hatched. I have a 1IV Shiny Eevee hatched as well, but would have to look for it. Both were actually accidents (kinda like that extra kid you didn't plan to have but are proud to have).

Uh, I can do that later, but I know it's a 4IV Shiny Torchic. that arrived while I was creating 6IV babies of the Hoenn starters (I finally got all three, and they were in my OR playthrough). The 1IV Eevee came while doing a breeding project and all I wanted was a female; oddly, it was the worst Eevee of the group of 18. Only kept it cause it was Shiny.

Word. Shoot me a PM when you've got that info.

Since there's a high likelihood that some of us will end up playing in a format we're unaccustomed to, I thought I'd share an article that might help you with setting up a separate team for Doubles:

Sorry for the dp, wolf and Zeffy

Alrighty guys, so I'm all finished with finals and ready to tie up the registrations on this tourney so we can lock in our bracket and all that good stuff.

Here is what our bracket is looking like as things stand:

http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r99/staplepod/Capture_zpskbjw4vbt.jpg

I removed the filler participants, and shuffled the seeds so I wouldn't be pre-qualifying myself for Round 2.

If we can get two more participants before Saturday, we'll have enough seeds for everyone to battle in Round 1. After registration closes, I'll look into how we can go about divvying up the spoils amongst the victors.

Cyclone May 21st, 2015 8:41 PM

I guess I better do a little breeding. Been addicted to Smash again lately.

skyburial May 24th, 2015 9:11 PM

Here's how I'm thinking of divvying up the prizes. We have a total of:

8 Legends (4 of them shiny)
11 Non-Legendary Shinies
11 Hidden Ability/Egg Move mons.

I'm thinking of distributing them as such:

First Place will receive all the legends, all the Hidden Ability mons, and 6 of the shinies (first pick).
Second Place will receive the remaining shinies and a copy of all the Hidden Ability mons
Third Place will receive all the Hidden Ability mons.

This would mean that some of us would have to breed copies of our offerings. If you want to trade them into my custody, I'd be glad to do the honors. But if you can help, that would also be much appreciated.

skyburial May 26th, 2015 6:57 AM

So guys, this is definitely a new rule I'm adding in that gives myself a certain favoritism, but otherwise I don't see how it would be possible for me to overcome particular typing disadvantages and I'm sure some of y'all are having the same problem.

Since we are all type-locked, participants will be permitted to use type-changed Mega Evolutions so long as the final form includes one of their chosen types. EX: if a participant's types are Fairy and Electric, they may use Mega Audino. The Pokemon will be required to mega evolve during the match, failing to do so will result in an automatic disqualification.

I will add this to the first post and stop using stuff like Mega Sceptile when people challenge me. My apologies to anyone I've beaten in the past with a Mega Sceptile. I know this is coming in at short notice, so let me know what you think.

Your type is Ground/Dragon so you are allowed to use Mega Sceptile as long as you Mega Evolve Sceptile. I don't know why you apologies because you didn't break any rules.

I had a conversation with Polar that was in disagreement with this statement. Evidently the rule allows for using Mega Evolutions that evolve out of the chosen typing. Meaning that Mega Gyarados is a permissible mon on his Flying/Fighting team, but things like Mega Charizard X are not allowed on mine.

PicPax May 29th, 2015 7:25 PM

Nevermind, I found the PM. I'm still not quite used to the layout of this forum, so I end up having a good amount of problems navigating it.

skyburial May 30th, 2015 4:31 AM

Glad to hear you found it PicPax.

Folks, it's with great honor that I make today's announcement.

The First Round of the Prism Cup has officially begun!

Please be sure to contact your opponent and arrange a time and date for your match. Submit the results in this thread before 22:00 MST on June 5th (4:00 GMT June 6th), or the match will fall to a coin flip. Also on the subject of coin flips, I used Heads for Singles and Tails for Doubles to determine the formats for this round's mismatches:

Zekrom (Nah) v. Zagan - Singles
Polar Spectrum v. Krystia - Doubles

Good luck, everyone. In the words of Queen Elincia, "Fight Well! Fight Brave! Fight True!"

What do I do if I, for some reason, don't get a reply from my challenger? I just want to know so there isn't amy confusion.

Zagan May 30th, 2015 8:33 AM

I will flip a coin to determine the victor if this happens, giving each battler a 50/50 shot at victory.

skyburial May 30th, 2015 7:06 PM

I'm stoked to be the first to announce my match results!

Surprisingly, I overcame a severe typing advantage and won Round 1 against TGM. I think Kyurem-B and Gastrodon were definitely the MVP's in this match.

5LRW-WWWW-WW24-DCW6

Also, make sure you're saving battle videos and posting them for review, folks.

Nah May 31st, 2015 5:04 AM

I lost to Zagan:

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/pokecommunity-ou-174993

There's a reason as to why we did it on the battle server and not via 3DS. We tried that at first, but along with a few connection drops there was a message that kept popping up that said "you cannot battle the other player" or something like that. Idk why that message was coming up, so we decided that we might as well do the battle on the server.

Also I did not think that Mega Beedrill could eat a +2 Dragon Pulse from Serperior.

Zagan May 31st, 2015 5:06 AM

Yeah it was a good game, and just to add - we were trying for at least an hour before moving on to the battle server - i just kept getting connection issue messages :( but it was indeed a good game, quite close as i didnt think Mega Beedrill would of lived that attack

+2 252 SpA Serperior Dragon Pulse vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Mega Beedrill: 154-182 (56.8 - 67.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

I need to take my Mega Bee out of its box again...

Snagged the victory on Oblivion Wing.
Battle video can be found with this code : XGMW-WWWW-WW24-YF2T

If I'm the one waiting for my opponent and he doesn't show up, is there still a coin flip even if I have been here all along?

He has the rest of the week, and the answer is yes.

So I could still potentially lose even if he was never here?

Polar Spectrum May 31st, 2015 5:05 PM

Yaaay lucky coin flip. Krystal, I'll play you in doubles soon as I get home from vacation. Should be Tuesday / Wednesday. You'll be available before then right?

PicPax May 31st, 2015 6:07 PM

I actually won. I was really surprised. I thought I would lose really quickly. Well anyway, Good Game BlueBoi22, and here's the Battle Code: NLLW-WWWW-WW24-JHXR.

This is how you know that you are easy to get beaten ^

skyburial June 4th, 2015 9:59 AM

Alright y'all,

There's been enough protest on the coin-flip victory that I'm gonna modify it to accommodate victory by default to the entrant in attendance. The rule will be as follows:

Each round will last for a single week.

Be sure to let your opponent know if you're going to claim their absence as well, guys. I'd hate for this to get political - it is a game after all :)

Charcoal Embers June 4th, 2015 10:05 AM

That's what you get for letting me in this game. Politics. XD

Krystia June 4th, 2015 9:05 PM

I knew I wasn't going to win. :P Polar had won the fight between the both of us :) Good luck

Polar Spectrum June 4th, 2015 9:18 PM

I saw someone actually do a joke team with 6 Tallonflame. XD

Charcoal Embers June 5th, 2015 6:57 AM

On the subject of absence though, I need to proclaim that Yveltal (Teravolt on PC) has only been on the forum 2 times in total. The last time he was here was 4 days ago. So I would like to claim absence for Yveltal.

skyburial June 5th, 2015 8:10 PM

Alright folks, the results are in for Round 1. Charcoal Embers wins his match by default.

A lot of you have already figured out your opponents by now. The following format disagreement was resolved by coin flip:

Zagan v. PicPax: Singles

I hope you're ready, Scraggy.

Zagan June 6th, 2015 3:41 AM

Cool, Picpax - its me and you :D

Don't take him lightly. I have battled him many times over and he is no joke when he gets serious. XD

Cyclone June 6th, 2015 10:13 PM

I didn't even know this was underway; didn't have the thread open. I literally JUST found out the battle I just had was for this.

7THG-WWWW-WW25-KP2J

We both nerfed each other's attempts to set up sweepers, but when we swapped Pokémon at the same time, that gave Tyranitar a chance to set up a Dragon Dance and then took half the opposition away. Whimsicott did a nice stall to get it out by preventing it from changing away from Earthquake (Encore).

I'll keep the thread open for further developments.

Zagan June 8th, 2015 11:43 AM

Woo, got 6-0 by Picpax, grats
RLUG-WWWW-WW25-TMMS

skyburial June 8th, 2015 12:18 PM

^ That was absolutely brutal. Props to PicPax, great work on that Steelix.

Also, congrats to PicPax and Cyclone for making it to the semifinals!!! It looks like the finals and bronze match will both be a coin flip on format.

Zagan June 8th, 2015 12:37 PM

Yeah Ill say - I lost hope when Infernape hardly did a thing to steelix :(

Cyclone June 10th, 2015 6:55 PM

6-0? Oh boy, I will be boned next round. LOL

rob_thijs June 11th, 2015 3:17 AM

Defeated Polar for the Prism League match.
Good to know Sky Drop ignores Follow Me for some reason.

Very nice! I have to watch the replay of my next challenger, but it sounds from the earlier comments that Steelix will be my main problem. It seems we both choose singles, too, so I won't be able to gang up a duo on it either (I prefer singles anyway for that very reason against me LOL). I have to see what else he has and be ready for possibilities, but I'd say he has the typical Gym challenge edge knowing what my types are, so I might have a hard time even if I prep. Knowing I did lose two (one was admittedly a sacrifice staller, so could even be seen as really losing only one) means I see myself already at a potential disadvantage here.
