Those cupcakes are beautiful.

Your second pixel art spoiler is amazing! I could definitely see that in a game somewhere, it's very convincing. Really good showcase, everything looks top notch.

queeniewolf May 31st, 2015 6:34 AM

Wow, I really really enjoy your style! :> the eyes, the round and soft faces ... thumbs up! I'm looking forward to seeing more from you

And those cakes ... oh my! They definitely fall under the category of "kind of too pretty to eat" ... though I'm sure they taste amazing haha

Circuit May 31st, 2015 7:19 AM

I really like your digital illustrations of those princesses. The one little thing that bothers me is the nose; I'd try and perhaps scale it down a little, or perhaps just change the shape slightly. But it's by no means bad. Your pixel art is also cool, though I've not much to say on it really, other than it's great :P

But your cupcakes... They make me hungry, and at the same time I don't think I could bring myself to eat one. They look so good, I'd just want to look at it. I love how each swirl of icing is so defined and looks like it has a purpose. You've got a really good hand there for that.

You've got some lovely stuff here :)

Thanks! Haha, I'm happy you think that about my little rework. When I think pixel art I always try and think about game assets. I want to make more 100% original ones, even if it's just small items.

They're mini cupcakes by the way! I made them for a party and so many were left over because I just made too many!! I actually don't like eating a ton of cake or so much icing, just making it pretty.
Thanks for the compliment!

Thank you!
You would be right in that my nose game is...not that great. I don't fuss over the shape too much and it ends up looking like a blob, so I should pay more attention to it!

A lot of cornstarch (or powdered sugar if you want an overload) is what makes the icing so defined. That and months of practice at my job, haha! It looked so easy when I started, but getting the right squeeze pressure takes just a little to learn...

SvelteDonut May 31st, 2015 9:04 AM

Daaaaaaaaang this is a good gallery. Love the cupcakes :D
I think your noses are awesome; finally someone who agrees on their appropriate size xd

Thank a lot! Well, I mean there are many types of noses of many different sizes, so it wouldn't hurt to vary the shapes and sizes!

Anyways, here's a quick hour coloring for a pencil sketch I scanned in a few days ago. I grabbed a color pallet and rolled with it.

oh i love the variety of art work! that's really cool you have a degree in illustration. i was working towards a graphic design degree before i switched my degrees. it was cool seeing the photography of the cupcakes. they're so cute and look delicious! i really like the little illustrations of the flowers (the ones in the white square boxes.) i feel like that's something you would put on a simple thank you card. i like how you have an outline around them and then have a watercolor texture to color them. i really like your pixel artwork especially of the one in the above post. i wouldn't use the one with the black outline. i never like black outlines they just don't look natural to me. i would just do a darker outline of the gray like you were doing in the first one you posted. anyways, i really love all of your work and i hope you keep posting.

I had good graphic design friends in college, it's so great to see their different work. What degree did you switch to?

Haha, the flowering of the berries actually is watercolor, but I did add an additional watercolor texture to their portfolio setup. That's something that I go back and forth in, drawing and coloring digitally, then doing traditional sketches and coloring digitally, then doing full traditional drawing and watercolors, then shuffle it again! It depends on my time and space I have setup. (My art desk isn't clean and it's faster to color digitally atm.)

Thanks for the input on the outline! I agree I'm not too sure on the black outline. I think maybe I would make the grey outline just a smidge darker, but I like that kind of outline better.

My favourite has to be the watercolor berry bushes! It's so simple yet I can't seem to look away for a while. <3 Also the princesses, especially the star one. The shading is so nice and the colors you chose just work well together. :3

I can't wait to see more from you~

Yeah, I need to get back into some watercolor again! It's been awhile, and it's fun to mix colors that way!

----

So a small update-ish? I didn't have time to do anything today, had to get my car fixed and do laundry for work tomorrow.

I played around with trying to animate something yesterday in photoshop. I used assets from Final Fantasy: Tactics Advance, I didn't change anything so it's not like it's part of my showcase, I just wanted to talk about it.
I think it's kind of a proof of concept of what I would like to do, make small transparent scenes. If I have time I want to try my hand at making plants and maps in the same style of this game, as it's one that has inspired me a lot. Though I'm not so good at the animation part.

The colouring looks really nice :> I like how you added so much structure and details to the surfaces, it makes them look solid and vivid

By the way, have you tried using different weights for your outlines? Make some parts thicker than others, play around with it a little bit :> It's not for everybody, of course, but you might enjoy it!

Fairy June 22nd, 2015 8:43 PM

Oh man those Deku Babas are like, way more expressive than I've ever imagined them being. I didn't know those things were even able to be drawn in a way that makes them express some kind of emotion other than 'eat nao', if that makes any sense?? Like wow my entire perspective of those enemies has been changed lol.

I love the sketched version of those Deku Babas. I don't know why, but your pencil work is just nice. Lmao. I don't even know where that sentence was going but you get the idea.

Anyway, I think you should do more sketches and put them here, especially WIPs. I'd like to see your though process during a piece. I also agree with what Queenie said about thickening some of your lines, and emphasising parts. Could make a really dynamic piece. :)

I really like these sketches for the avatars you made. This one in particular. The whole thing looks really nice. This one I find the face bugs me a little. I think the definition in her face is a tad lacking. The cheek on the left side and her chin are just a little too round in my opinion. I think defining the contours of their faces a little would go a long way.

Anastasia.R July 5th, 2015 11:06 AM

Woo, long time no see!

I'm in love with your palette. Just - everything has such a nice arrangement of colors - even your colored sketches! ;o;
I'm a sucker for watercolor pieces so I really love this peice.
I agree on the crit already about the recent avatars, but I just also wanted to add the eyes kind of line up weird. ouo The second avatar actually is pretty good on that - it's the first one that has one eye higher than the other.

Other than that, hey nice work yo. ouo/ I adore your palette and the brush textures in those avatar pieces, oh my gooooddd. <3

Nina July 5th, 2015 1:15 PM

Thanks for the input guys! Yeah, they're in chronological order, I use them to warm up to the first one is bleh till the third. Unfortunately, I usually do these late at night so by the time I get to rolling closer to the third that I really like I'm too tired to continue!

In terms of texture, I use Kyle T Webster's brushes. He's got a billion gazillion now and I think the original set I had is divided up into bigger ones, but I primarily use the Ultimate Pastel to draw and color, and sometimes I mix it up like in these avatars I used the Ultimate Watercolor Flat brush to give it a bit more texture. But not being fancy, just bending with a square or rectangle brush can give things a different look.

Nina July 8th, 2015 6:11 PM

Super quick update. I thought I'd show some process, even though I might rework this whole thing. I just sketched some stuff out tonight, but gotta get up for work tomorrow.
I was thinking about doing a drawing in combination of a new profile for the fantasy theme, but it's a possibility I just won't have time!!

I was trying something different with ink lines, but half way realized that's not what I wanted. I might just paint over and make lineart that way, working it in more than normal. I might also just print out the sketch larger and ink it traditionally on a larger paper, just to try and capture some of the previous energy?

Oooh that's very nice! I absolutely adore the way you coloured it, it looks so pretty :>

Depending on what material the blade of the sword is made of, it maybe could've benefited from some shading and especially light and it's not completely straight either ... but to be honest, I don't really mind that too much because it kinda harmonizes with that "messy" (not in a bad way!) colouring style :D

Just one small thing: the arm she has raised in front of her doesn't look completely straight/weirdly wobbly. I get that it's probably supposed to be the way her clothes fall but it looks more like the arm itself is dented.

Well when I did those teacups, it was literally my first week of modeling, so you can learn pretty fast!
I find certain parts kinda frustrating, as I actually made textures for the petal and it is not as intuitive as you think it would be to paint something. Well I guess if I just literally hand painted it it wouldn't be so bad, but trying to get the faces to work and saving the textures and what nots. That I have no idea if it's put into something else do I need to join everything and make it one object and one texture???

That probably didn't make any sense, but yeah! I made up a design and I like how it turned out. It almost looks like it could be a hard candy to me haha.

Pixel art takes a lot longer than anything else unfortunately.

I think these in total took like....4 hours all together? I started with very quick drawings, then pixel sketches, then some shading and refining. The smaller sprites that aren't so detailed only took about 30 minutes at most. The people were pretty hard, I didn't keep track of them.

Haha, I get a lot of outfit/drawing idea from Gaia Online. Not really active on there, but it's a nice dress up game.

I on one side like how diverse I am, but also get mad at myself because I think I need to focus on thing instead of a bunch of different things at one.

oh man really? haha! i remember gaia! i used to go on there back in my middle school days, that's cool to see that it's still around. some of the outfits on there are pretty nice, so i can see how that would give you inspiration! oh and i know exactly what you mean, i think that being diverse doesn't hurt necessarily though as long as you enjoy what you're doing, it allows you to play around with and explore a lot of different things and find out what you really like. but there are also pros to focusing on one thing and getting good at it as well. i suppose it depends. c: i think it's really cool how versatile you are, though!

It's not a true update, but I was looking through old stuff so I might as well show a comparison shot here! If anyone is worried about not being good enough when they start out...don't be.

[snipp]

With the color pallets on the pixel ones, I'm not saying using a small amount of colors is inherently better, but it does take some control to limit your colors and match with other shades.

The water reflection in the 2009 piece is so cute!! I'd really love to see you do a draw-again-meme of that one with your new 2016 skills!! Especially since I really enjoyed watched the speed pixel of the Cleffa-- really interesting to see your process!

The headshot pixels look great too-- very retro haha! Though I think it would help if you added a highlight color-- It's hard for me to describe but I feel like there's just not enough "shine" on it, you know? Either adding a highlight color or, since I know you like limiting your color palettes on pixel works, maybe limiting the use of the lightest shade of pink to the upper half of her hair? That said, I definitely like it better without the strand of shading in the middle- it looks nice in large solid pieces IMO! I also think it would help if you nudged the mouth over to the right about 3 pixels? Right now it seems a bit too far to the left!

I hope your week improves Nina! ;v;;/ Really looking forward to the next update!

Brownish colour shade and the light source is from upper right.

Do you mean a direction shadow on the background being cast by the figure, or do you mean actual shading on the figure itself?
I thought you meant just a background color, which I could get behind, however I think adding any dark shading would ruin the light pastel feeling that the image has.

Ahh Nina this latest piece looks really lovely! The looseness really works with the way the flowers have been drawn in a way where I feel like it looks neat instead of messy like usual-- and the nice crisp green tones are really refreshing. It's probably just a sketch, but the unpolishedness is quite charming here!

It's probably just a sketch, but the unpolishedness is quite charming here!

Yeah, it's just supposed to be a sketch so I can make it into a real illustration later, but I really do like the way it looks right now!

As a King and self proclaimed sub admin (maybe someday after a millenium lol) i checked Nina san's artwork and i can say some words about it. First of all, i could say that you are a big fan of Super Mario probably since you like to make flowers with mouth reminded me of petey piranha lol. Secondly, 50 hours per week? So under my royal command i name you Mikaela (Michelangelo female lol) you seem to like art a lot and your passion can be seen behind the essence of each art which is very cool in my opinion. Pure and nice art Nina san grats! Keep it like that and don't you ever change :)

P.S If you feel flattered about my words np almost every girl feels like that lol. Anyway, good luck for the future arts Nina! And i'm sorry that i'm not good at judging art like other people :(

Keep it up with this because it's a nice little scene. I find I don't improve much unless I actually finish my WIP's for the most part. I can see this one being a pretty tough piece to tidy up and fill out but it has enough potential to be worth it. Stick with your first colour palette too, the hues are nice but certainly considering adding some shifting to the purple ground to add more detail. This is one scene I'd love to see finished!
