Roleplay Olympics Suggestion Box

Suggestion Box

PokeCommunity's annual Get Together is right around the corner, and this year it is bringing with it the return of the renowned Roleplay Olympics. For those of you who do not know, the Roleplay Olympics - usually shortened to RPOs - is an event in which several roleplay-based competitions (similar to the RPTournament in some instances) are simultaneously held for your enjoyment with the victors of events often winning prizes.

This year we want to make the RPOs better than ever, and as the goal of the event is for all of you to have as much fun as possible, the event's committee has decided the best way to do that is ask what you'd like to see during the Olympics.

In this thread please share with us any ideas you have for events you would like to participate in during the RPO's and comment sharing support for other ideas you like so we can get a good idea of the popularity of peoples' suggestions.

If for any reason you do not feel comfortable sharing your suggestions publicly, you are also welcome to private message SV, The Last Sentinel, Retro Bug, myself or one of the moderators of the RPT and we will gladly post it anonymously for you in this thread.

So you can get an idea of how the RPOs work, here are some useful links to previous RPO threads.

best IC post playing as a character killing GP, with a mini-SU including name, favorite color and testicle size

Sonata June 1st, 2015 10:07 PM

Special rpo dreamland scenario.

The battle thing looked nice. Maybe have people sign up and then break it up into even groups. Have them collaboratively brainstorm up a bbeg to fight and then reward the teams based on creativity and how interesting the battle is.

Some kind of JP challenge with a romantic theme - rated K+! Meaning challengers can't rely on secksy tiems to score, they need to make us understand the feels through elegant writing <3

GreyBidoof June 2nd, 2015 6:43 AM

Maybe have a challenge where players have to swap characters with each other?

Where were you when Connections was going on :(

A JP event sounds wonderful.

Foxrally June 2nd, 2015 8:02 AM

ooooh all of these ideas sound amazing, especially the character switching one

I call dibs on renegade

JukeboxTheGhoul June 2nd, 2015 9:27 AM

I agree with the Switching character thing, I've suggested it before, too.

How about it actually being roleplay instead of obvious fanfiction writing?

Just a thought.

Mana June 13th, 2015 10:48 AM

Playing one another sounds like fun but I'd be worried about insults and digs being mad ;-;.

Maybe there can be a gimmefox fanfic event though. Totally backing that. :P

We aren't RPing here? Is this actually the colkaberative fan-fiction section?

Anyway, I don't how accesible it would be, and there are some obvious managment problems, but I think it would be a lot of fun to re-imagine the existing RPs, and mainly the characters. I'm imagining something like an 'elseworld' story, where you adapt characters to a new setting. How would your character work if Venice was a Sci-Fi RP, what would Titans be like if the characters were in the British colonization of the US, how would your Camelot character look if it was a racecar RP?

We're doing the best we can in this regard. Although it should be noted that many of these events are also being designed to be accessible to the entirety of PC, not just to RPT regulars.

I'm only speaking from the experience I had with the last one.

What makes something roleplaying related and not just fanfiction? Is there a need for character interaction and JPs? Just wondering

Personally I think interaction is necessary. But I know others disagree. In any case, we're making this open to others on PC too as mentioned before, so it's writey too.

A medieval RP, where you are a king and you'll build your kingdom from the ground up!

I have no idea what "JPs" means.

It needs to be with others. You know, like what a roleplay actually is?

From what I saw, everything with the last one was basically fanfiction writing where you did it on your own with no participation from other members.

JP is the abbreviated terms for "Joint Post". Basically a single post with two or more contributors.

From what I understand the lack of interactivity was a common complaint, so we'll be doing a lot more interactive stuff. That isn't to say all events will be like this though since the RPOs are being held alongside the Get Together this year and we want them to be just as accessible.

Ice June 16th, 2015 7:16 AM

I was thinking about JP challenges, and a challenge in which you have to write a heist with someone else would be fun, I think. Like, have a set bank or building, with certain guidelines, guards, security system, and then have people create characters and JP. And the characters can be everything, from magic users to catburglars. I think It'll be fun. The different characters would give very different approaches to the same heist, so I think it'll be fun.

There's no need to emphasize your points with italics we understand what you're saying perfectly fine without that needless factor.

RP is Role Play, Role Play is a term used to describe the act of an individual taking on the role of another, usually a fictional character and acting out their actions. Role Play is most often used as a reference to video games, board games, acting and "LARP" (Live action Role Play).

Written role play is as such defined as the act of writing out the actions and the perspective of a specific character in a post by post format, as opposed to the writing of fiction, which is the act of writing out a story through the perspective of one or multiple characters and encompassing the actions of what is generally a very large variety of individuals.

At times, Role Play is synonymous with fiction, sometimes it is not depending on the content of a post. However the only requirement of "RP" is that one writes a post featuring a single character and focuses on said characters actions and perspective.

A JP, since you may still be unsure, is a special RP post where multiple RPers contribute their characters perspective in order to create a single tidy entry. It allows more efficient interaction between multiple writers and allows large IC events to be carried out in an efficient manner and not across ten + short posts.

Hopefully this definition clears it up for most people. Role Play is often enjoyed with multiple individuals, however it does not necessarily require them. The JP events, should they go ahead will serve to test the cooperative aspects of RP, other events will presumably focus more on the writers individual skills. We do our RPs in groups, but we usually create posts all by ourselves... in a test to ascertain the writing talent of an individual, the cooperative and group aspects of the hobby are completely irrelevant.

At the end of the day, RP is just fiction (note: fiction, NOT fanfiction, since it often involves original characters and settings) often with other people and a few extra conditions.

If individual testing is not acceptable to you, then perhaps the RPO just isn't your gig, ya dig? I hope this cleared up any confusion. ^^

*Clears throat.*

Now then, personally I love the idea of JP events. Perhaps two of them?

The romantic idea suggested by Apotheosis might be a two person JP event... and the heist event suggested by Ice might work better a 3+ event? Just my two cents on the topic.

I'd say keep it at 2. It's hard enough to plan a JP, and timezones start being a big problem at 3 people. I think turn out will be way bigger with groups of 2, because less groups of three can be formed because of restraints.
