*formal bow* Osu!
Well, I suppose I'm in. I'm a hardcore Shotokan geek and Kendoka. Been doing both for two and a half years now, I think, and I've loved every minute of it. |
Yeah you're in. Nice to have ya with us.
|
Alrighty, I suppose I'll start us off with a question: Open-hand or close-hand techniques, which do you prefer and why?
Myself, I prefer a close-handed strike, partly because of my style. shotokan attacks focuse the energy of the blow into surprisingly small areas. The closed hand provides a better focus for this energy, making the attack all the more devastating. Urakun-uchi, for example. although I must admit, I do like a few open-hand strikes. |
I prefer close-hand, I find it mush easier to use, and I strike more powerful with close=hand
|
*Bows*
Good evening everyone. Some of you here may know me from the Martial Arts Club at Sppf, but it would be an honor to be part of this one as well. I'm a Kendoka and Swordsman, I also have some backround in Jujitsu and Kung Fu. And if you don't mind me asking Admant Dodger, What Kendo dojo do you practice at? Its always nice meeting a fellow Kendoka. Specially one that likes Pokemon as well ^_^. |
This is great...! I didn't know you practiced any martial arts, Adamant Dodger! ^__^
And Bluekikatana, I haven't seen you in a while too! I remember you from the Ninja Clan! :3 Anyways my avatar/signature might tell, I'm a Ninpo student. And as a Ninpo student, I study different kinds of weapons although the main focus for now is Taijutsu. How many kinds of weapons do they study in Kendo? I obviously know that the main weapon is the sword (as the name suggests too xP) but I have heard they also use weapons such as Yari, Naginata or even Nagemaki... is that true? :] Anyways, to answer the open hand/closed hand hits, I prefer both depending on the situation. A Shuto in Ninjutsu can knock the opponent with no problem, and it can also catch them with surprise. It depends from the situation, really... ^^ |
Hello Blue, welcome.
|
Hey there Ningi,
Hows the old ninja clan doing? I was planning to drop down there sometime to start some havoc, but with all my training and the spring festivals going on I just lose track of time XD. About your weapons question for Kendo.. Remember our soul is our sword. We don't need anything else to succeed in the battlefield! But if you must know ^_^. Once someone has more or less mastered the sword they can move on to different styles in Kendo that sometimes include different weapons. We're talking about duel wielding Kodachi's, or One handed Sword with a Wakizashi in the other. And there is also the infamous two sword style that was derived from Miyamoto Musashi. These are very elite styles, but flash is trash without the basics. People who use these styles are rare. One must seek "nito" masters (duel wielders) and also be able to do all the primary waza in their sleep to have the priveledge of learning this. There is also a broad sword that is sometimes used (Very heavy). And those other weapons you mentioned I have never seen practiced with. I'm still learning though ^_^ I will probably see the use of many other different weapons in Kendo as I keep walking the path. Here is a picture from my dojo of a "nito" practioner. http://img231.echo.cx/my.php?image=nito7mc.jpg All the samurai carried with them was a Katana, wakizashi (for indoor fighting), and a tanto (throwing dagger for them ninjas). Aside from maybe some extra sake and umeboshi this is all the samurai really need ~_^. |
*laughs* Yeah. The sword is our life, our soul, our heart. No other weapon is really necessary. Mastery of one weapon can overcome a limited understanding of many, many others (I'm also mixing in some Shotokan theory here). Blueki hit it on the head, actually, quite nicely.
What I think your impression of use of the Naginata and Nagimaki came from, Ningi, is that oftentimes, Kendoka will practice/train against/with Naginataka. Anyway, Blueki, I train at the Shogun Budokai under Sensei Tom Ryan, Sensei Dan Ryan, and Sensei King. All three trained under Sensei Iwamoto. I'm proud to be their student (although Sensei Tom is rather hard to get along with... ^_^). |
Woah...! That was great, Blue! ^__^ Thanks for the explanation... it was really nice to hear a kendoka's point of view ;)
Well, let's say I think we have some slight differences in Ninpo, because as far as I know, we do not consider the sword as our soul. We consider the sword as a tool, as well as an extention of the body during a fight. However, we do not concentrate on the sword only when fighting, and we use Taijutsu whenever its more appropriate. Anyways, as a Ninjutsu student, I have done some training in Bikenjutsu, which is the gathering of secret sword techniques developed by the Ninja. Those techniques were very effective against samurai as they were unkown to them. Besides that, a Ninja was required to learn how to use pretty much anything that could be used as a weapon, and the kinds of weapons varied from practical, simple ones to battlefield style ones, like the Bisento. It is really important for a Ninja to survive, no matter what the circumstances. If your sword gets destroyed, or if you lose it somehow does not mean you will give up the fight. A Ninja must rely on their ability to adapt and formulate strategies relative to the situation, and any tool can be used as well as Taijutsu or escaping techniques. I have a question though - I know from experience that samurai use to practice hand to hand combat too, like Jujutsu or Aikido. Do you guys practice anything like this in Kendo? ^^ |
*Bows*
Im in. I do Taekwondo |
Welcome coolmaster! What belt are you in? Nice to have another TKD dude with us.
|

However, each and every one of the students at my Kendo dojo take some other form of martial art. I, Sam, and Andrew are all Shotokan Karateka, Brian takes Aikido, the Senseis Ryan teach our Karate class as well, Sensei King practices Shorei-do Karate, Mark and Jon take Judo, Dave, Aikido, so on and so forth. |
*bows*
Hi, Kurou-Kun/Bart/dpkuro. Its groudon. I do Tae Kwon Do, and I am a 1st dan black belt. I teach classes at my school, and I am going to open my school in many years! |
Try telling me something I don't know Groudon. XD Welcome!
|
Quote:
Groudon, I have a question - how comes that you're only 14 and yet, you're a 1st dan? o.o; Anyways... welcome! ^^ |
*everyone hears a voice from Fortree City* o.O
YAAAAAAAAY! *flies to Saffron City* *joins* Hu maminm jjrfiopjipjigji! *explodes* |

|
I used to do karate when I was 8...
|
meeh il join ^_^i wanna do ninjutsu i only need to find a dojo :(
|
Well, I have been training since I was like 9. In three days, It's my 5th year of training. I also progressed through the belts quickly. I am planning to test for second dan in maybe 2 years... . I am also the only instructor at my school now. We have had another guy, but he quit. Now its my master and I.
|
Welcome Mrs Vice Prezzie and mr_loonytik!
Groudon, in our dojang you don't get a dan until you're 16 o.o Instead, if you've reached the black belt level and are under 16, you get a JBB (I'll give you a dollar if you can guess what JBB means) |
Junior black-belt would be my guess. :P
Although, I must say, in my eyes, achieving a dan rank in under ten years is a little foolish. To become a yudansha is the kind of thing that requires extreme dedication and patience. One of the higher-ranking instructuors in my area, Sensei Iwakabi is currently 65. He's been training since he was 13, I think and has only recently achieved his eighth dan. Although that could just be the way my style trains... |
Well, I totally agree with this, Adamant Dodger...! (btw, is there a shorter name with which I can call you? ^^)
A Dan isn't just being able to execute certain techniques, it requires loads of experience both in life and in the art itself, which cannot be obtained at a young age. In Ninpo, it is not easy to become a Dan. Apart from the difficulty of the techniques (just to give you an example, for the 10th Kyu you need to be able to backflip and frontflip already.... o.O) there is a deep understanding of life that a person must have. A Blackbelt Ninja needs to be a fully formed strong person, both physically and mentally, who has overcome and understood many things in life already. A young person hasn't got the knowledge to be a real warrior, however strong his spirit might be. Or at least, this is what I think regarding my warrior art, which makes it simply my opinion in front of you all... ^^; |
TAD, AD, Dodger, Adamant, Takai, Ozy. Take your pick. *laughs*
I think it's actually particular between governing bodies. I know that a few of the Shotokan federations other than mine have looser requirements. I presonally disagree with that, but eh, if they want to have substandard yudansha, their choice. I don't know what governing bodies there are in Ninpo, but they have the right idea. Personally, I believe that martial arts are a lifetime thing, and that the right to wear a black belt has to be fought for, that you must prove your knowledge of not only the art, but your dedication to developing and furthering it, your knowledge of its history, and your abilty to responsibly use it. That is an area I'm intamately familiar with, many Shotokan techniques are potentially deadly, even if you can't develop all the power behind them a yudansha can. |
WRONG! JBB means Juvenile Big Beating. You get a beating cos you're too good for your age. You get a JBB in TKD for 30 minutes till you're 16. XD j/k. You're right. It does mean junior black belt.
Anyway, you guys are starting to make me think that I won't make it to black belt. Well, that won't stop me from training though. |
Hi I'm new here... I love wolves and http://www.neopets.com/refer.phtml?username=eevee__eevee Poke`mon...
|
A) Wrong forum
B) Wrong thread C) Quadruple post (very poor ettiquete) D) All these questions can be answered in this thread. |
Quote:
That requires a lot of dedication to it, though, so get training! xP |
Or at least it seems like no time. :D I still can't believe I've been doing this for two years. But yeah. it takes dedication. Then again, everything worth having does.
|
Bart, if you had enough determination to persuade your parents to let you do TKD, then you surely will have enough determination to make it to black belt. ;)
|
So, what's happenin in here?
|
Meow... nothing much I guess...? Not many people are posting in here, apparently. Well, let's revive the conversation, then, warriors! ^_^
What shall we talk about as a next topic? =) |
OK I'll start a topic.
What do you prefer out of these: punches, blocks, kicks or strikes (like knifehand strkie, etc.) Personally I like punches the best. |
Meow... I like the blockings done in Ninpo because they really hurt... XD Its more like hitting the opponent's arm than blocking imho... xP
Anyways, I can't say I prefer any of them as each of them complement each other. Sometimes you have to use punches, sometimse shuto, sometimes elbows, kicks etc... It all depends from the situation, you might prefer one or the other but its important to adapt to certain situations and be able to use all of them instinctively, whichever is more appropriate... ^_^ |
I like kicking, I can kick better than I can punch
|
I like kicking too. We have a kick called helicopter kick. You go 360 degrees and then kick.
|
I practice that kick o_O;;
|
And what is the 360 spin used for? o.o;
|
To make it like a helicopter o_O
|
Ahh! Then it makes sense... or not? XD
Doesn't make combat sense, though, tiglet! :3 |
Quote:
Anyway, yeah, they all complement each other. For my best techniques, though, Gyaku-tsuki, Mawashigeri, and Uro-mawashigeri (reverse-punch, roundhouse kick, and back-roundhouse kick). *agrees with Nin-nin-kun about helicopter kick-dealie* Just takes extra time, and in a combat situation, so much as a sixteenth of a second can make the difference between victory and defeat. The spin takes longer than a sixteenth of a second. |
Watch it or I will Slash you o.o
|
*sharpens katana* Say what now? :P
|
She quieted down... XD
Meow... Although there might be some effective uses of the spinning kick, as my friend can use it quite effectively after he dodges a kick... I don't really know how to explain it, but it works for him! :P Oh, and a correction - I believe the uro mawashi geri is called ura mawashi geri... xP *gets shot for his 'I know everything attitude'* XD Meh... nothing serious... just teasing ya. XD |
*assassinates TAD* o.o
You say what? Oh wait you can't speak XP |
Hehe, I am not sure whether he's THAT easy to assassinate... XD *points to his 'samurai' tag*
He owns you. XD |
*dodges assassination attempt and comes in with a beheading stroke*
I've heard it both ways, but it's listed as uro-mawashigeri in Dynamic Karate and the way Sensei Merrell taught it to me (along with imparting ways of making it the TAD-uro-mawashigeri special, served with a side dish of your ***). But I'm fairly sure both are vaild. As for a spinning kick, well, I've seen them used effectively too. I've also seen them easily defeated with backfist strike. |
I like bali kick best, you jump, kick and land all on the same foot(360 degree spin)
|
mmm I don't know the kick you're talking about, groudon... ^^;
And TAD, the definition of ura means back or reverse, ne? The Japanese term then should be ura, not uro :P Like ura gyaku, ura shuto, ura oni kudaki etc... :3 |
Eh, like I said, I've heard it both ways. But whatever. What matters is that you can do the technique and do it right. Knowing the name isn't what's gonna keep you safe.
|
Muwahahaha I know! As I said, just teasing ya...! XD *pokes you annoyingly* :3
So... what shall we talk about now? Let's see - how often do you train? (including when you train by yourself) |
Bali is really hard to explain, so I wont confuse you.
I train about 4-5 hours a day, at my dojang. |
Hmmm... Karate, I train three hours a week at my dojo, about a total of 12 or so outside. Kendo, two hours at the dojo, 11 outside.
|
The more appropriate question to sk me is when do I NOT train. I train about 10+ hours a day.
|
Quote:
I like your spirit! ^_^ Well, just as Bart, I train a bit everywhere I don't get noticed... sometimes I jump benches in the park when I'm alone, and other times I practise things like the happo tenchi tobi a bit everywhere I go... :P Regarding more intense training, I train every day for at least an hour, but not only on martial arts, also weight lifting, flexibility exercises etc... Then at the Dojo I train 3 hours a week plus some special events where we train for three hours... it comes about once every three months, and we do some special high level stuff there... ^_^ |
If we're talking that kinda stuff, then I suppose that jacks my count up a good bit. Serious, devoted training, though, I don't have the time for much more than I mentioned. Come summer, though...
|
Woah bart! You train more than me! 0_o and I'm an instructor...
|
Well I just came back from TKD training.
|
Quote:
Anyways, I haven't got much time either to train every day, but I try to at least do some general exercises for half an hour minimum... you know, just to keep fit! ^^ |
I'd be able to train a bit more if it wasn't for finals... How I loathe finals. well, finals, and perfecting lightsaber dueling techinques... Hehe... Yes, I am a total Star Wars geek.
|
Oh, pleeeeease! Don't tell me you're into this 'Star Wars Mania' too!? XD
That's disappointing.... *shakes head* *runs to the cinema to watch Star Wars episode 3* XD |
Totally, completely into it... Hehe... I've already seen it twice, gonna go see it again in a few days.
|
Meow... I should show ya a video called Star Wars III: A Lost Hope! XD
It's funny.... xD |
*bows* I think I'll try to revive this club.
Remember me? I was checking old messages from my club on sppf, and I came across your post telling us about your club here. So I came here to check it out. May I join? I train in Moo Duk Kwan Tang Soo Do and Aikido. I also trained in Tae Kwon Do for a year, and I occasionly cross-train in many other arts too. |
It is kinda too late too revive it... It has been dead for over a month... You might as well start a new club.
|
That was fast...
What would be the point in starting a new club, shouldn't we just bring this one back? It is perfectly fine. |
I didn't make up the rules... So... what mertial art do you do?
|
Tang Soo Do, Aikido, and Tae Kwon Do. I have also cross trained in many other arts.
|
Eh, can't change the past, coolmaster. Welcome Buff Norris!
Since you do TKD, Buff, can you teach me the moves of the patterns Chon-Ji and Tan-Gun? |
OMG!!!!i cant beleive i havent seen this club yet!please let me join.i go every staurday.
|
Welcome Nicole. What style do you do?
Quote:
Tae Kwon Do. But I don't remember Chon-Ji or Tan-Gun. Are they katas? I think some different schools have different katas. The only Tae Kwon Do katas that I learned were Kamsah, Kyu-Yul, and Jayoo. |
Hi Nicole! Welcome!
Cool! You do Taekwondo, Buff Norris? Cool! I do it too! |
Welcome Nicole. And yup, Chon-Ji and Tan-Gun are katas. Cho-Ji is for white belt/yellow tips, and Tan-Gun is for the yellow belts. I'm asking because grading is on 7 days, and in case I go up the ranking level, I already have a head start and I know my kata already. XD.
|
hey thanks everyone,oh my style,i dont even know how to spell it,its notTaekwondo,it like starts with a T.:)
|
Here's a list of martial arts that start with T, I hope one of them is your style: (you veteran martial artists may want to read this too, cos some of them you might never have heard of...)
Tang soo do, thai boxing, (Muay Thai) thaing, taijiquan, t'ien lung tao, tantui, tiger kung fu, tompei quan, turtle kung fu, tarung derajat, taijitsu, taido, taikiken, tantojutsu, tegumi, taekwondo, tukong moosul, tat kun tao, tsunami karate, thaikido, taekido (thaikido and taekido are different) So Nicole, which one of them's your style? |
Quote:
What do you get when you cross Muay Thai with Aikido? Thaikido lol, it sounds like Thailands version of Aikido. Though Muay Thai and Aikido are polar opposites in so many ways. Here's two more: Tai Chi (already listed as taijiquan) Taekyon There are also other uncommon or unique styles. Quote:
|
Why'd you quit taekwondo in the first place?
|
Quote:
I didnt have the money to continue there. They were charging over $80 a month plus belt promotions and other fees. Where I go to now for Tang Soo Do only charges $25-$30 a month. They don't have a fancy dojo, so they don't have high overhead. |
Wow, my dojang only charges:
$40 membership fee, only have to pay once $35 montly fee, paid every month $35 grading fee, pay 4 times a year |
Quote:
|
hey ill find out today, because i go today.yay!
|
I've just been to grading yesterday, and I don't get to know the results until Thurday. (Wednesday for some of you) Hope I pass!
And wow, $80 a month. That's pushing it. |
Okay we need a new topic so I'll post VP's topic from my club.
What's your favorite cartoon/anime that involves martial arts? My favorites are the three Dragon Ball series, Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X, Inuyasha, and Case Closed/Detective Conan (I know it doesn't have much MA in it, but Rachel is the captian of her school's Karate team.) |
Yo that's my topic. XD
My fave animes that have MA on it are Naruto, Dragon Ball/Z/GT/AF if it exists, Xiaolin Showdown (OK it's a cartoon, but meh), Real Bout High School, Spongebob Squarepants (Spongebob sometimes battles Sandy) and Ozzy and Drix (well only sometimes, but meh). |
I just got my red belt in Tang Soo Do! Next belt...Black! HOOAH!!!
\/ NEW TOPIC \/ Are you more of an offensive or defensive fighter? I can't remember if we already used this topic or not, but oh-well. I'm more defensive, but if my opponent won't attack I can be offensive too. |
