Are you a boy or are you a girl?
Pokemon X and Y, like all other main series Pokemon games since Pokemon Crystal, gave us the option to play as the male character, Calem, or the female character, Serena.
So what gender did you choose to play as in Pokemon X and Y? Did you choose the opposite gender? Why did you choose to play as the gender you chose? |
I chose to play as female since, well, I'm female.
I picked the girl because...er, only partially because I'm a girl as well. That's never stopped me from playing male protagonists before though. It's also because I thought she looked better - but only slightly! The guy was cool too. I just thought the girl would be a better pick for me right now.
I played as Serena, the female character obviously. Always been tradition for me to play as the female since I am female myself, and also she happens to get all the good stuff when it comes to the customization so it's a win-win.
Well, I'm a dude, so I normally pick the male character, but I did play as Dawn in one of my platinum playthroughs.
Since I have both editions- played as the female character in X, and the male character in Y.
Female, but I swap just about every time I play a Pokemon game, regardless of the generation. The only exception is 3rd gen on the older games, 'cause it amuses me to think that I'm running around as a tiny old man rather than a kid in a white cap.
I picked the boy, if I could choose again I'd choose the girl tho.
Just for fun, and I would probably play more around with the character customization. |
In X, my main playthrough, I chose the dude because I'm a dude and with character customization I could make him look similar to how I look IRL. With Y though, I played as Serena.
I played as a female because I'm female. The only games I first started as male were those were the protagonists were only available as male.
If I were to obtain the opposite version though, I would usually make that file begin as a male trainer. I dunno, I think of the protagonists as fraternal twins because I'm also a fraternal twin. It's always a call back to my brother playing the Pokemon games along side me up (until the 5th generation when he lost interest). |
In X version I play as Kalem and in Y supposedly as Serena. But I lend my Y version to my young sister lately hahaha!
Since I am a male, it makes sense for me to play as the male character.
As many of the females said when they played the game, I had the same reason, though opposite.
I played as a male, since i'm a male. It's just a tradition for me to be honest to the game. Though I would've chosen the female in numerous other games, due to their exquisite design. |
Ever since Nintendo added the girl as an option, I have been playing the girl. Very seldom do I ever play the guy. I always like to use 'Kimi' as my character name, and I name my pokemon after J-rockers as well. It's only natural for me to choose the girl for these reasons. XD
I usually play as Serena, though I have played as Calem before. I mostly play as the girl characters as I'm actually a girl.
I think Calem is really ugly so I always play as Serena when I restart my Y.
I always play as the girl. It seems that Game Freak is incapable of making a male protagonist who looks decent.
Plus, I wanted to play AS Serena, not battle against her. |
I've always pick a girl since I'm also a girl and always connect the protagonist with myself, haha. I think I would pick a boy if I kept a second file for the generation, but it's always simple 'ole me with the same ign. :)
Since I have both X and Y I dedicated one game to each protagonist; Calem for X (since it was my first) and Serena for Y, which was my second playthrough. I thought both characters were really well developed and enjoyed the customisation options offered. Here's to hoping it's expanded over time, rather that removed like in ORAS! |
Well like all games since Crystal, unless I have no say on the matter, I go with the girl character. I just simply prefer to play as my own gender. ^^
I'm unisex.
I choose the male character... I never play with the female character.
Obviously I chose the female character. I really love how we're able to customize our character!
I choose my gender in every game unless I hate the character representing it, so female. I dont think Ill like another game in the series as much as XY just because of trainer customization. Hopefully the XY sequels have it and Ill be set.
I can't think of a game that's given me the option to pick a male or female where I don't reliably choose the female in outside of B/W. ^-^; I just relate to women more and generally greatly prefer their design. But in a game where I can change their appearance? Female automatically wins, by default, guaranteed.
I picked the boy in Y ;)
But in platinum i picked Dawn, she was quit cool! But for me the gender isnt importent, never had the feeling that "this is a 10 years old version of me" :) |
Am female, chose female. I adore the style of Kalos.
I just restarted the game because I felt uncomfortable using a female model. Male one looks so much better to me.
I played as female because Calem is plain and boring. Then again, I have plenty of reasons.
I picked boy (because I am a boy)
I chose to play as a girl because I'm a girl. :) But yes, woot for character customization. :)
I've gone with the female character in run one. I've been playing as male for most of my play-through of games prior to gen six, and when X and Y were released, I wanted to side with something different. In my second and third runs, however, it was male.
I chose Calem because I thought he was the best looking male player since Gold.
Well, I chose the boy because I'm a boy! But I have to say ... the female character has a lot more costumization! For example, the hair-styles. The male character only has 3 or 4( I don't remember well) hair-styles, but the female one has many!
I normally don't choose to play as a girl. I don't mind it, but if it's a silent protagonist that I'm supposed to identify with, then I'll choose the character closest to myself. On top of that, in Y, the male had the customization features I wanted. Wish there was a way for me to upload his outfits before I started a New Game.
I went with a girl because I am a girl. Not really fond of the customization options in terms of bags, but I can deal.

Picked the girl because of the high amount of customisation options and Calem looking plain generic.
Sometimes I like to dress my character up as a trainer class as close as I can. Currently my character is dressed as a Hoenn Aroma Lady. |
I play as a male. I've tried playing as the female a couple of times but always restart the save after an hour or so. Just doesn't feel right cause I'm a male in real life and when I play Pokémon I want the character to be a little digital version of myself.
I played a boy because I have this weird complex where I feel awkward picking outfits for a girl but if I have the choice to give her functional armor (not the awkwardly sexual kind) then Id rather play a female.
i played as Calem in Y since i was planning on cosplaying him later with my friend ( who'd be serena )
i only regret it a little bit since i wanted to wear a dress, but oh well. |
to be honest, I played as the girl in X due to more clothing options. other games it really depends for me.

I chose Girl mostly cause it had alot of cool customizations and Serena was very cute and calem didnt appeal to me as much :D
I always play as the girl, because I am a girl and I always like how the heroine looks. I am also a moetaku
I played as a boy since I am one. It's just a tradition since I starting playing Blue back in '98.
I always play as both, so, in X, I played as a female, and in Y, I played as a male. This is so I can get a feel for both protagonists~.
I like the idea of playing as the guy in one version and playing as the girl in the other, lets you play both. :p
But I prefer playing as the character of the same gender as I am, easier to feel like I am the character in the game that way. |
I usually just pick who looks better between the two, the gender does not matter.
In the case of X/Y, the female had more customization options, so I went with her. |
I selected boy this time, even though its false. I guess "I" thought the game would be easier.
I almost always choose the female, but it was never really important to me. I really really love the new feature that allows us to customize our clothes and hair :)
Always picked the Male character, except that one time when Crystal came out I picked the female character. Selecting a gender was a new thing and I thought I'd do a simple run with her.
I always went for the Female character. I liked that the Female character had more customization options.
I always choose to be a boy when I'm playing X/Y but I've "rolled" female on other RPGs that have the option.
I always choose boy because I'm male, but I think I'll play as Serena in XY as she has better customization options than Calem, and I also like her design overall more than Calem's.
I always play as the male character..in every pokemon game. I think this is because when the professor at the start asks you your gender I always felt like a rebel when I choose the opposite one.
However, I do personally like the hair the female character can get when in X/Y. |
In X/Y, the female just for the awesome customization. Every other time, male because I'm male :P
I usually choose the boy. Sometimes the girl, other times not so much.
Knowing customization was here and I didn't completely despise the look of one of the characters (Or absolutely love), I flipped a coin.
Ended up as a dude. |
I've only played as girls since Crystal came out and it became an option. So, obviously I picked a girl! I was expecting more hairstyles available when the game announced the feature to customize trainers, and was a little disappointed but I'm still appreciative. Maybe we'll get more in Z Version...? ;)
I own both X and Y versions, so I went with female in X and male in Y.
Two reasons. First is X has a more whimsical tune playing on the 3DS home screen and Y has a bolder, deeper tune. Second is because of XX (female) and XY (male) chromosomes. Yes, I put thought into this. |

I tend to play as the male character in Pokémon games even though I nowadays often play as a female in many other games. I guess it could be either for consistency or that I really want to relate to the protagonist in Pokémon games xD.
I always play as the male on my main file. On opposite versions, I'll sometimes play as the female. The dialogue changes up a little so it's refreshing and I like some of their designs. In XY's case, the female has more customization.
I usually play as a boy cause i am a boy
I played as female in Y, as I always do. I might play as a guy if I end up getting X, just to change things up, but in general I tend to prefer playing as my real-life gender for my main playthroughs--especially in X/Y, since with the character customizations I can actually make the main character somewhat resemble me :)
I played as Calem in Pokémon X because I'm a male. :P However, like many others, I chose to play as Serena in Y. It's been a habit of mine to always pick the male character as my main file because it just seems right, haha.
I played as the male protagonist in Pokemon X because it's easier for me to identify myself with a male character. But in my OWN OPINION, Serena-users get more respect and attention than Calem-users. {:3}
I was a girl, because I AM a girl! Having that option has always been a refreshing break from most video games, because the game becomes much more personal when you can truly identify as your avatar. The various options and outfits made it possible for me to really feel as if I were part of the world of Kalos; especially the pigtails. I never go anywhere without pigtails, a skirt, and OTK socks, so I was psyched that my little trainer could do the same.
I loved the fact that you get to choose character and even change the appearence during the game. I chose girl ofcourse! n_n |
When I was a young child, I would be pretty annoyed at having to play boys in my video games. Spyro, Crash & Pokemon. I still remember how happy I was when my oldest brother bought me Crystal for Christmas (I didn't have Gold or Silver,) and how my eyes lit up when the game asked: "Are you a boy, or are you a girl?"
Then I restarted my game as a boy because I thought that the avatar of Kris holding the Pokeball when you engage in battle looked really, really creepy. Hahah. I believe I eventually got over it and played as a girl on my second run. But in all other Pokemon games, I've been the girl on my first playthrough, because I like to project that it is me. I feel sorry for anyone who played a boy on X/Y and was excited for customization though. they got only 4 hairstyles. |
I always pick the female character, I really liked having the customisation options and mixing and matching outfits, although I wish there hard been a darker red hair colour, cause I've always really wanted to project how I look onto the character, and while when X and Y came out my hair was purple, I usually keep it at a dark red.
X and Y, I'm a girl, only because Serena has more customization options than Callum.
I played as a girl because... well.... I am a girl. I felt more comfortable playing as a girl rather than a boy.
I play as a boy, because I'm am a boy.
I chose the girl because I think her design is amazing, plus the customization options are really cute!
Like every game that I have I picked the girl.
I chose to play as the boy. I actually thought about choosing to play the girl but dropped the idea lol.
I pretty much always choose the female character because I think they're cuter x:. And in XY there were more customisation options so even better~
I don't really care whether my character is a boy or girl so why not choose the one I think looks better :p |
I am male, and I've always chosen the male character for the games for that reason, regardless of my preference on how they look compared to the female one.
I usually play as a girl (but alternate genders when restarting my game), and this time is no different. The girls have much cuter customization. I'll still always be mad about the fact that male trainers only get one good hairstyle. >o
I usually play as a girl despite the fact that I'm not one and being called a girl freaks me out in real life, but the customization options are amazing! Plus, I see a lot of guys in the big VGC tournaments playing as girls, even in Hoenn (though less so?), so I don't feel less of a not-girl for playing a girl.
I've chosen the boy, because...well, I am a boy.
Oh, and I think he looks a little bit better than Serena. |
I normally play male because I'm a male. I play female characters for fun.
I play male because I'm a male. I like to play my own gender to get into the game more. Especially with Pokemon where I like to put myself in the trainers shoes.
I gravitate towards male characters, even if I'm a woman IRL (honestly it helps so much to prevent harrassment... but I also tend to like their designs more, so for me it's a win-win).
But I do have exceptions. Y is my main game, so I made the character look like me, so it's a girl. X has a girl too, because I had an idea for a name (Fairy monotype, my naming theme was 'sweets', and her name is "Cocoa"... I could have easily done a male character, but the dark-skinned female IS SO CUTE OMG I WANNA HUG HER). I ran through OR as the very default Brendan. Dunno about my next playthroughs XD. |
Regardless of being a girl in real life, I chose the boy because I liked his design more and I felt like playing as a boy was a more suitable choice for me for some reason.
I played as the male, and always do, because I am one.
I am a boy, so I played as a boy.
Once I finally get around to buying Y version though, I'll play as a girl. |
Only sort-of a girl, but I went with the girl for X because I like skirts and feminine-type things regardless so I felt the customization suited me better. More importantly, my little brother was playing as the boy already. :p
If pokemon were a first person shooter, I'd definitely pick a female character just so the other players would feel my hitboxes are smaller. But since pokemon isn't that kind of game, I've always chosen the male character.
But maybe I have always been wrong... maybe female characters do put some kind of mental pressure on their challengers. |
I usually choose the girl and I just love Serena's design which made the choice even easier! I've loved customising her as well!
For X I played as Calem, and for Y I played Serena. It's a tradition of mine to buy both versions (if possible lol) and play a male and a female. Third versions are kind of odd, but I guess I just pick whatever gender I feel like picking at the time.
I chose Serena because of customization. She has so many clothes and hairstyles compared to Calem (205 vs. 102)! I would love for them to allow more pants for her though since she only has a few skinny jeans. I also want that bamboo sprig hat for her.
When the game was released I picked Calem since I'm a boy and was curious on what kind of customization he got. After completing the game and seeing the customization Serena got I restarted and picked her. :)
When I think about it, I usually pick the girl character in a Pokemon game - except for Soul Silver since Ethan looks awesome. :D |
When I picked X in the first place, I chose to play as Calem because well, I'm male in real life (like my usual gender picks in most Pokémon games), and I can make my character closely resemble myself when I wanted to. However, I wanted to do something different when playing Y, so I picked Serena because she's cute, and because she got much more style options for sure.
I traditionally always run through Pokemon games multiple times, usually picking the male character on my first run and decide on a whim in later ones, recently leaning more towards the female protagonist. XY are sliiightly different due to character customization. Because the male character's outfits are trash, I have chosen Serena on almost every subsequent playthrough.
I am a boy and so of course i chose the male character. I have been choosing male since Red and i dont think i am ever gonna choose the opposite gender.
