Did any of you have an allowance as a kid?
My youngest brother was complaining to my mom today that he wanted a bit more of an allowance and I was sitting there like "man I wish I had even gotten one" because I can't ever remember having one haha. Though had I gotten one I probably would have spent it all on video games and food ;(
I get enough allowance per week to save up and eventually waste on hauls of manga back when I was still in school.
Now I get more money per month for college, but at the same time I live away whenever I start a new term so my money goes away for living expenses, especially for my internet. |
I am born in a traditional Indian family and in these types of family giving allowances to children is considered worthless. So naturally I havent got any allowance!
But still if I would have got any allowance I would have straight away ordered a ps or a nintendo 3ds!Cause I want these systems badly! |
I never got an allowance when I was younger, but my sister did, and I was always angry about that, haha. She got extra allowance when she got good grades, too. One of the few disadvantages of being the oldest, I guess :p
I got my allowance during my early teenage years, as we are required to eat outside the school.
Well I'm still in high school, but the way things are going: no. Although $100 dollars for my birthday seems to make up for it, so I'm fine with getting zilch.

From time to time I did. Kind of. It was never a guaranteed thing, more like "oh maybe I'll feel like giving you a few bucks for doing chores this time around." Although it was that way for my siblings as well, so I couldn't really call any sort of unfairness about how it was given out. :P
I do vaguely recall trying to whine about how unfair in general it was to my parents at least once, since "every other kid gets an allowance for at least doing chores" ah ha ha. Oh, if only I could smack my younger self right now. |
I got £10 a week when I was 14. I had a friend who then used to work as a paper boy and get £25 a week, and I used to get overtly jealous of his superior income soo much lolol
Yeah, I got £10 a week, so long as I behaved myself (I was a little turd of a child, so it got stopped a lot).
It stopped completely once I hit 16, though I still got money on birthdays and Christmas, still do, actually. |
I used to get like €2 a day just to buy food at school, and €10 if I ever went somewhere with friends. If my parents had ever given me allowance I'd probably have saved it and done nothing with it anyway.

Oh, the joys of being an older sibling. I didn't have an allowance. Every once in a while, like some of you have mentioned, my parents would institute a chore system where we'd get paid, but every time without fail it would eventually fall apart. There was this one time where my parents thought up a pretty neat way to try and get us all to run - we each were given an empty progress chart and whenever we reached certain cumulative mile markers, we got some nifty prize. Sometimes there were group prizes, like when we all reached 25 miles we'd go out to a fancy restaurant. That one only lasted 50 miles or so (well, I got to 50 miles).
Now, though, each of my younger sisters gets an allowance. They get more monthly income than I ever had as a child, and still complain about not having enough money. I spent my paltry funds on food and video games, but I have no idea what they buy. Clothes, I guess. And makeup and StarBucks and other essentials. |

I used to for doing chores and stuff, but my allowance sort of stopped in middle school and stuff. I dont really care at this point, but I usually save my money when I get some, so I might have like...3 years worth of allowance saved up. I will probably be working next summer, so I dont care all that much because I dont really spend my money all that often. |
Nope. My special needs were pretty bad as a kid, so it was hard for my parents to get me to do anything. :/ Plus, nowadays, I get SSI the first of the month. So, I don't really need an allowance or anything.
I did get things like... for example, if I was good for an entire day, my parents would buy me something I wanted. Either that or... in order for me to get what I wanted, I had to do something for my parents as a compromise. |
I never got an allowance. My parents would say I was allowed to live in our house and eat the food they bought so I didn't deserve to get money for doing simple chores around the house or anything.
it was three dollars a week (when my dad remembered) so not really lol. the only money i got as a kid was birthday money or from doing chores for my grandparents.
I don't think my parents really gave me an allowance in the sense of x amount a week or for doing chores. During high school, however, my parents often would give me some money for lunch and usually on my birthday.
Um no, we didn't get an allowance because we were told that being able to live in the house was allowance enough and that we had to do chores to pay our parents. lol Like thanks. But apparently when I had moved in with my grandfather for two years, my mom started giving my sister an allowance because she naturally had to pick up all of my chores. wtf mom.
I was getting an allowance for a little while, but it stopped when I got older and I'm not really sure why.
I never really got a steady allowance. Instead, my parents would pay us for any extra chores we did that weren't a part of the regular schedule. I remember breaking one of my friend's longboards, and those thing are expensive, so I ended up raking the pineneedles that fell in our lawn for a week. That might not seem so bad, but our lawn is at least once acre big and surrounded by pine trees. That money combined with the amount I already had was enough to buy a new board. I learned the value of money really quickly, haha.
Once we got older, however, my parents started paying us for mowing the lawn. I can't tell if it was because we were older, or the fact that my dad tripled the lawn size. I was always on the riding lawn mower, and the job used to take an hour. That's when my dad expanded the lawn, and the time got bumped up to four hours. I got paid twenty bucks a week for that, so I was happy. |
I recall during all of my school years, from kindergarden to my senior year of high school, I got an allowance twice a month. Course half of it was for saving, the other half for spending.
Remember a few years ago when I made a joke saying that most of the people here have an allowance from their parents and use it on video games? Those were the days.
Nope. I never got an allowance. My father was too cheap to ever give us any money, so I never had an allowance. The most I'd ever get out of him was a dollar.
Nope. Too poor. Back when we had money family didn't care.
I think for maybe one or two years in middle school, I got a little money (like $10 or $15) for good grades whenever the end of the semester report cards came around. Of course that's when my grades started slipping too so that didn't last long lmao.
Other than that no allowance for me, other than the $1 my grandma used to give me whenever she saw me when I was really little. Any birthday and Christmas money I got usually went straight into my savings account too, which I opened up when I was 13 so lol. |
I still get allowance which confuses me but I don't ask questions
I get my allowance per week. It lasts for a week. Back in elementary, my allowance per week was 50 pesos.
I never had an allowance per say, but I got most of what I needed, which wasn't much so lol.
Not really. The only allowance I got while growing up was birthday/Christmas money. I would have to save all that money up to get what I wanted. There were times, though that I earned money for doing some major chores or helping people out, but other than that, that was it.
hahahahahahaha nope
Allowance? Nope. If I wanted something I had to tell the parents and they'd consider it but they wouldn't outright give me money unless it was for lunch/a snack at school and the like. So the whole concept of an allowance is odd to me since I'm so used to just asking for a gift as a reward rather than the money to actually buy said reward.
Spoiled spoiled spoiled. Kind of. |

OP: "I know most people on this site are below 17, so I'll establish my dominance by reminiscing about when I was a kid, clearly yet subtly establishing the age gap between myself and these infants."
I had £10 a month in pocket money, which would have been £15, but as I got the Official Nintendo Magazine and Astonishing Spiderman comic every month, it was taken out of it. If I wanted anything as a kid, I had to either pray the car needed washing, or nag and nag and NAG until I got it. Neither option really worked, so I just made do with what I got. Better than nothing, after all~ |

I never got one as my parents didn't have a lot of money.
I remember receiving money for extra chores here and there, or for baby-sitting, but a steady allowance wasn't a thing for me. I can't say I've never gotten it, but I also can't re-call the last time I did.
Like others it was more-so I could ask for something and it'd be considered, or I would get money for special occasions like my birthday or for Christmas, but otherwise there was like a month or two where I received it in my lifetime, but nothing consistent. I was already spoiled, so I guess that's a good thing. |
Nope. My parent's didn't have enough money to give me or any of my 2 older sisters allowances. :(
Nope. I remember asking a few times while I was a kid but I never got one. The only time I got money from them was birthday, christmas, or whenever I needed money for something school related and such.
I got allowance when I was a kid. At first I got $20 a week, but only after I did some chores (Or if I made some good grades), then it had to be switched to $20 every other week (I could still get $20 a week if I also did some chores for my dad.).
Nope. I didn't receive an allowance as a kid. My father used to live by the motto that we shouldn't need to be paid to help out around the house. We live together; we're family, so we don't charge each other for help. In a way it was admirable, but as a kid I used to always be jealous of my friends who got pocket money. That being said, I never missed out. My parents never let me go without. Not to the point of spoiling me, but I was sure as hell more lucky than a lot of people which I will always be grateful for.
Never did get one. Anything that I did want to buy was bought by my parents, and any birthday/holiday money was put directly into my savings account. I do wish that I did get an allowance as a kid because it would have taught me to hold onto any money I had on hand. I spent a lot of money for no good reason when I first got a job.
I don't recall ever having an allowance, but if I needed money for something I would help out more than usual around the house. I would only get 5 dollars but that wasn't monthly. I'm 19 now, so I really only get money for my birthday and Christmas. I don't think allowances were a thing where I grew up, none of my friends had one. Whenever I have kids, I'll give them an allowance only if they help out more than usual. I do see the benefits of having one, it teaches kids the value of money and they respect it more.
I used to be given the daily allowance when I was studying in school, usually to buy usual things like foods or drinks when I feel like it.
The only allowance I ever received was called "lunch money"
