Video Games Releases on Friday
Effective this week, new music releases are being moved from Tuesdays to Fridays. So in conversation with a coworker we were thinking: Would video games benefit from this same move?
For those of us who work full time Monday - Friday, getting a new game on a Friday gives us more time to be able to play the game on release night without having to worry about lack of sleep and having to go to work early the next morning, which would be the case for a Tuesday release. |
You know, this is actually a thing that will benefit gamers. I know Friday releases already benefits those who listen to music a lot (I know this because I'm a music junkie and it's the usual day for album releases here) so to have the usual release for games move to a Friday will be a huge win for gamers since they can enjoy their new game without having to worry about getting prepared for what happens the next day, given the weekend is a time to relax and have fun.

Nintendo already does this with their new releases. Personally, I much prefer Tuesday releases since I don't work on Fridays and I have to wait until after work on Sunday to pick the game up since I live outside the city and don't have nearby game stores. It's a lot more convenient for me to pick games up after work on Tuesday, especially if it's one I really want to play.
That said, Friday releases would probably be better for the vast majority of people who work a M-F workweek, since like you said, it gives them the whole weekend to enjoy the game. |
This has been a thing over in the UK for years now, and yeah, it's good for people who work a full week and then get the weekend to enjoy games that release on a Friday...although this occasionally backfires if the postal service doesn't get your game to you on time. Personally I've never really minded it, and when I was working I loved the end-of-week treat of having a new game. It's a nice finish and something to look forward to. I suppose it would be optimistic to hope for more simultaneous worldwide releases with this move, wouldn't it? |
Ugh, really? :( This sucks for online preorders because if you don't get same-day shipping, you have to wait the whoooole weekend to get your game on Monday at the earliest. I decided only this year to maybe try preordering games from Amazon or similar sites instead of going to pick them up at EB since games have gotten so expensive here now but... I don't wanna risk having to wait a whole weekend. I only pre-order stuff to avoid spoilers and if the rest of the internet has the entire weekend off to play it and then spoil it? Nah.
I'd probably be okay with this if Canada had Saturday shipping but alas. (I assume Canada is following suit with this, at least.) |
It's already this way for Europe lol
|
It wouldn't really matter to me since I tend to avoid new release purchases these days. I'd maybe want it for FO4, since I have Fridays off right now. ;)
|
I think Friday would be the best day. You get the game and you can spend the whole weekend playing it.
|
I can't imagine it benefiting sales that much. The time of year is much more important, in my opinion. I heard that they changed music releases to Friday to deter piracy (since a lot of people get paid on Fridays). Don't think new video games suffer as much from piracy, though.
As far as benefiting individual gamers, though, it's hard to say. Friday is best for some people, but so is Tuesday. |
