Twitter users: what do you think of this change?

So this week, twitter eliminated custom backgrounds altogether, causing for a blank white background to appear instead of that custom background you may have set, or even one of twitter's many stock backgrounds. Surely, I'm not the only one because I've seen it from other users on twitter, and in the news as well.

What do you guys think? Was this a good move on twitter's part? Maybe a bad move?

Honestly, I'm not too pleased by the move because it does make twitter seem more bland now than it once was, but at the same time, I do ponder if it'll only be something that users become adjusted to over time.

I don't think I've seen it (my current background seems intact) but that is just so rude of a decision. Customization allows for individuality and this feature getting taken away is heavily akin to XY's trainer customization getting removed from ORAS.

Unfortunately this is an ever recurring design philosophy with the web in general. I hate it too, but it seems like it's here to stay. It happened to YouTube, Twitch, and even IM clients to name a few (after MSN was killed off.) Originally the idea was to give the user as many options as possible, but that's now changed to simplifying the user experience as much as possible, probably because of the rise of mobile and the little minimal customisation that can accompany it.

Even with that though, it's a mystery why they can't keep it. The desktop experience isn't being hindered, and in some cases you can debate that neither is the tablet experience. I guess it's where things are going whether we want them to or not. Oh well, at least there are still banners...for now.

Wait, that is a thing? OMFG I HATE IT. I liked seeing my background because it made Twitter look less bland. I was actually wondering what happened, and I thought maybe it was me for some reason. :/

Twitter search is wonderful! If you seem to be having a problem with anything, a search with your problem (using keywords like 'twitter background') may actually very well confirm if it's just you or not. :)

I'm pretty sure this is something temporary, although I am hearing things that Twitter is trying to be more like Facebook in a way, where you have very limited options on customization & such. It doesn't affect me as a twitter user, as long as you keep the 140 character limit, I'm good.

I had a nice background

Now it is gone

I cry because all this blank is burning my eyes :(

Spinosaurus July 24th, 2015 1:58 AM

The white background is an eyesore. What the shit?

Tsutarja July 24th, 2015 5:17 AM

I will say, it still hurts my eyes even though it's been four days since the sudden change. If they didn't want users to no longer have a custom background, they should at least have made it where the color wasn't so monotone; maybe like in the mobile app or on the mobile site: a blue background!

Starry Windy July 24th, 2015 5:33 AM

For me, the change into the white background feels too plain for me. That's no good when the feature of customizing the background is removed, because different backgrounds in many Twitter users is what makes them unique.

Not much of a twitter user here, but I do wonder why they thought it might be a good decision (maybe good for presenting a unified experience, but that's it). It seems so little compared to other things, but people like to customize things to their liking - why take that away after you've already given it to them?

Palkia July 24th, 2015 2:01 PM

I barley noticed it. Then again, getting riled up about minor cosmetic changes on free-to-use websites is so first world problems.

I mostly use Tweet Deck as I have two twitter accounts (one personal and one professional), so this didn't affect me as much either. Sometimes I do go to Twitter as Tweet Deck once in a while won't load past tweets and I can understand the white background being boring, but as mentioned I use Tweet Deck more.

Leviathan July 25th, 2015 10:54 AM

Oh brother. More white blandness. Meh.As others have previous said, seems to be the new phase for current websites to go though. Still, I wonder if you can use Stylish or some other kind of plugin to change the background to something else. I don't imagine it'd be too hard.

Urist McHemlock July 26th, 2015 6:03 AM

They should of kept the customizable backgrounds and fix the bot problem.

cream July 26th, 2015 3:28 PM

wait, isn't that old news? i've been unable to have a background on twitter for at least a year. they disappeared when that big twitter redesign happened, no?

Nope, it happened this past Monday.

"This new white-centric design isn't entirely new. The company appears to have started to remove backgrounds from new user profiles last year, when profiles were redesigned."

so it appears the change has gone into full effect for all twitter users only this past monday...

probably because of the rise of mobile and the little minimal customisation that can accompany it.
