I've been taking on the Windows 10 upgrade offer several weeks ago, and I hope everything is alright after the upgrade, without any compatibility issues and all. Besides, I'm wondering if Cortana (the assistant of Windows 10, that is) will work well with me, since I almost never have a PC assistant before.
|
I reserved my copy of Windows 10 a long time ago, but I am not going to take the plunge yet. I am still not under the belief that Windows 10 is truly free (such as when it comes time for patches to be made), but at the same time I don't think Microsoft would ever charge people to actually use Windows 10.
|
I had already reserved my Windows 10 offer when it has shown in my computer a long time ago, but I'm wondering about a thing: Is Windows Store apps and games will work in the Computer same(Especially Music and Video apps) As They work on Windows Mobiles? Btw I'm very much exiticed to Install Windows 10 in my computer after all it will be the best Windows Version haha :D
|
Gonna wait a week or two and make sure it's solid enough. I saw an article on upgrading and it seems to be super easy and supposedly keeps most of your stuff no problem. Sounds great so far.
|
Windows 10 Update
So PC, will you be upgrading to the new Windows 10 on Wednesday? Why or why not?
|
holy shit I thought we were still on Windows 8
|
Moved to c&t :)
|
If it's all stable and works smoothly, definitely. If not, I can wait a while, I'm not in a big rush to upgrade.
|
Hmm, initially I want to upgrade to Windows 10 on the Day 1 several days ago, but right now I need to wait until I get a confirmation that the upgrade is safe, and that it's definitely better.
Sometimes it's better to be safe than sorry. |

I guess I will get it when Im building my new PC. Actually heading for a Intel i7 5820 and a GTX 980 Ti but feeling like its a bit to much...
Looks really interesting and DX12 is a must have. |
I'm still undecided.
I reserved my copy (at least on my desktop, I noticed my tablet had it as well but I haven't done anything with that yet) a while ago, and I've been told that Windows 10 is actually doing pretty well*, but I'm still kind of nervous about actually taking it, in case something does end up going wrong. * or at least, told to me by someone who was trying to install the tech demo or whatever on like 10 laptops at once when I saw him this weekend, lol. Maybe I'll wait a few days and then see. |
I was going to wait a week or so, but I think I might be impatient enough to just install it right away haha!
|
I reserved my Windows 10 copy months ago, but I've blocked the install program. I don't think I'll install Win10 before December or so. I wouldn't want to get an OS that doesn't work well, has bugs, compatibility issues, etc.
I may install it sooner if everything goes smoothly though. |
Not sure if I'll transition from Windows 7 to Windows 10, but I will make the jump on my Windows 8.1 computers. People seem to be pretty happy with it so far and, I have to say, getting a new OS after all this time is a little exciting.
|
Just checked my compatibility report and it says that my computer is ready to go! Can't wait till the upgrade rolls out. Been waiting for it for a while now.
|
Try several methods, but still doesn't get the windows 10 icon
|
I'm gonna start installing it in like 15 minutes
good luck to me |
It finally installed for me after about 2-3 hours! I have to say that it'll take a bit of time to adjust, but I'm liking it so far.
|
Got this up a couple hours ago, been playing around with it. So far, I definitely like it more than 8.1 and though in a very odd sense I'd say it's less simple than Windows 7 (in terms of easing you into the experience), it really is pretty intuitive. Looking around, it really does give the impression that Microsoft's trying to create an environment that can do pretty much everything someone would want without them having to download 3rd Party Software.
As for Microsoft Edge, I'm very impressed. It may be because after years and years of IE's status as being the worst "modern" browser, but this one really is fast. Would I make the switch from Chrome (or even Firefox) to it? Well...no. It's not so much because of the browser as it is the lack of plugins and 3rd Party Support (considering it's so new). That, and I've yet to really dig into it, just briefly doing some searches and like, but so far I like what I see. As for Xbox...it's kind of surprising what this has become. If you have an Xbox One, it basically does all of the things that does (minus play Xbone games, but supposedly you can stream them and, from what I've seen, it's pretty smooth). Which means you can record videos and put them online, take screenshots...of pretty much any game. You can add games from your computer and run them through Xbox creating an overlay that can be quite convenient for makeshift recording software. Only real beef I have so far, which really doesn't matter so much because basically no part of me was considering using the built-in video playback software (since I use MPC-HC + MadVR), but they say it can run mkv files and...well, when I tried with a few different files, after a long-ish load I only got sound. Other than that, Cortana...still undecided, I want to explore more of what she has to offer, but I'm not really sure how yet, and I'm still undecided on whether I'll upgrade my Gaming Windows 7 rig...though to get the most out of the gaming aspect of Windows I might need to. |
I just finished updating to 10 and I'm not sure what I think, but my initial impression is that having the start menu back is a gift from God and that alone makes it superior to 8.1. I think my touchpad might be acting up a bit though? It's a bit more stiff than I recall, but that may be me being a computer hypochondriac.
|
Windows 10 has in fact upgraded for me. So far there doesn't seem to be much cause for concern...
|
Okay, looks like I've made it into Windows 10 right now! So far it's doing so good, except for the white title bar (EDIT: and lower battery life, I'm wondering if this one was just me), and I'm glad the good old Start menu is back!
Oh, and I'm also bummed that I can't use Cortana, apparently it's limited to some countries, so if I want to use it, I have to switch the region in my PC or laptop. |
I started upgrading right as the upgrade rolled out, and it did took me the whole night. I did some installing and upgrading at my tech workplace earlier today which granted me the opportunity to play with the OS a little before I could actually use my own copy. Literally, it is freaking amazing. Exceeded my expectations. There's still a few nitpicks I have right now, such as transitioning from the skype standalone app to desktop, as well as the search bar on the taskbar taking some room. I'll grow to live with them. Besides, I'm really enjoying the start menu. <3
Still exploring the OS as I speak! edit: Microsoft Edge is awesome! Currently surfing PC with it. |
After the sluggish installation and upgrading process it finally came.
The menu is so slick and just simple with nice additional apps to toy with :P |
Found a way to get rid of the search bar. Right click taskbar> Search > Hidden. One less nitpick to deal with!
|
I dare say I love to choose a lockscreen which suits nicely with me :3
|
I would love to upgrade to 10 but there are several things that are currently holding me back, chiefly these problematic wifi adapter issues that are being reported and whether or not it's possible to dual-boot Windows 10 on a Windows 8.1 machine. I don't want to inadvertently nuke the original OS, as I've done before in the jump from Vista to 7.
|
Is there someway disable aeroview on 10? The option seems grayed out
|
I guess I'm hopeless to turn off aeroview ;_;
|
What does everyone think about the new Microsoft Edge? What turns me off about it is the lack of adblock support, but I'll learn to deal. You can easily tell that it's a hell lot faster (and less of a hogger) than Chrome.
|
The upgrade still hasn't appeared for me...weird.
Anyways, I'm gonna do a system image of my laptop now before I begin the upgrade, that way I can always restore if something goes wrong. |

e: Checked my recent updates, there's a failed one labelled "upgrade to windows 10 home". I dunno where to go from here, but you might want to check that. |

So Windows 10 really fucked up my computer. I kept getting a blue screen with the error "INTERNAL_POWER_ERROR". The solution to that seems to have been disabling all my graphics drivers... sigh. I also have a black bar on the bottom of the screen covering up a third of the taskbar.
|
Currently about halfway done downloading the upgrade! Can't wait to get it installed!

@Team Fail: I was going to try the manual update earlier, but it wasn't working for me and it seems to be a bit of a hassle. Thanks though. Never mind! Cleared out C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download and it's started. Thanks for the help. |
Yeah, guys...be sure you update EVERYTHING on your computer (that means windows update, as well as any drivers that are out of date). Out-dated drivers are usually the main reason why upgrade installations fail.
Also, back up your stuff too before jumping on. It's a rarity to lose things during installation, but you do want to be on the safe side. |
My system image is nearing completion (and it hasn't even been an hour yet!), so I could be on track to begin installation tonight ^^ yay!!
|
I did gave it a click, but won't budge
|
Windows Update has failed me so I'm using the tool now instead.

I have it reserved and am currently waiting for my update to be available for me.
|
Earlier I was all like, okay, why not go upgrade now--
Wait no never mind I still have to wait for my turn to get it. :T And I know about the one thing, but I really don't care that much about it to make it update. I can be patient in regards to this. I wouldn't be installing it until later anyway. I think right now I'll at least go back up the stuff I really want to keep, just in case. |
Installed it on both my desktop PC and my laptop and have had zero issues with drivers, but had to use the download tool on my laptop as I wasn't able to pre-load on it.
Highly recommended update, performance hasn't changed one bit and the new Start menu is less obtrusive than the old screen. The directx 12 support should be important for gaming in the future as well, should go well with the graphics card I'm planning to get soon for my desktop. |
I used Microsoft Edge to reinstall Google Chrome and that's truly the epitome of my Windows browser experience lmao
I made a comment last night about how the mouse seems to be rather glitchy compared to Windows 8.1 a couple of hours earlier and it's definitely not me being a technohypochondriac, it slips around a lot more and alternates between stiffness/limberness without any warning, plus it's developed a habit of being frustrating with clicking onto tabs and then dragging them out of the main browser. |
Well, I've been hyped for Windows 10 (I'm still irritated by the name and nonsensical counting, though - if we're going off of Windows 7 and Windows 8, the operating system's common name should be Windows 9, although at least the "Windows 9x issue" explanation sounds like a plausible rationale...I guess I'll have to indulge in extreme rounding of "Windows 8.1 → 9" so I can have some semblance of proper numbering.. -.- And in any case, the Roman-numeral alternative of "Windows X" sounds cooler, although I guess it kind of detracts from the uniqueness of the "Windows XP" name.. /Windows10namerant) for a while now; I guess I just like gravitating towards knowing about new technology. {XD}
Although I haven't actually tested out the system yet, it looks highly promising from what I've read as an excelling successor of Windows 7 - way better than the touch-infested disaster of Windows 8/Windows 8.1. I'm glad that Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 users get the opportunity of upgrading for free (especially for Windows 8.1 users, as Microsoft never did deliver a "proper" Start Menu as they supposedly intended). I'm a bit wary of the "software as a service" route that Windows 10 seems to be taking, though. I also dislike the practice of forcing updates on people; I distinctly recall an update from some time between 2014-2015 that inadvertently disrupted the functioning a lot of Microsoft Windows computers (or something along those lines), not to mention that Windows seems to inexplicably like installing (or at least wanting to install) updates at the most random times (even when set for a time frame like ~3:00 AM), particularly when the user is probably busy with stuff and at moments when shutting down would not be helpful. Hooray for the return of the proper Start Menu! ^^ As far as I'm concerned, that thing needs to be a mainstay on Windows computers until something better comes along (it definitely wasn't the Windows 8 Start Screen, that's for sure). The integration of tiles is a decent compromise, although I prefer the Windows 7 Start Menu layout. Thankfully, the free software of Classic Shell allows extensive Start Menu customization and seamless integration with Windows 10 (aside from the Windows 7 Start Menu version, it even lets you mimic Windows XP-era and Windows95/98-ish-era Start Menus; that is so cute! {<3}), so it looks like my Start Menu qualms are finally over. (I gotta donate to those guys someday..) Other positive points related to the classic Start Menu's return include the "Control Panel" being regularly accessible again from the Start Menu (I never thought I would have to make a desktop shortcut just to get there on Windows 8), "Accesories -> System Tools" becoming regularly accessible again for things like Calculator, Disk Cleanup, and Disk Defragmenter, and the command for shutting down being easy again (it has been the easily-pinpointable "Start Button → Shut Down" for years, I have no idea why Windows 8 opted for that non-intuitive "sliiiiide-down-the-right-of-the-screen! → wait for the menu → press the on-screen Power button → then Shut Down" nonsense or whatever the "Shut Down" gesture was - a Start Screen tile was needed just to escape that gesturing chaos). Also, it seems like "Modern Windows Apps" are confined to actual "windows" now instead of taking on the form of those Windows 8 "FULL-SCREEN, YEAH!" monstrosities (the prime offender being the Start Screen itself), which is a major plus. One of the biggest pains of Windows 8 is that it felt like almost every file-opening action mandated some kind of full-screen ordeal, even opening simple PDFs and images...sheesh. The "Continuum Mode" feature of Windows 10 that adapts towards whether the user is on a desktop/laptop computer, a touch-screen tablet device, or a laptop-tablet hybrid device is much appreciated, compared to Windows 8 forcing "TOUCH!" on you all the time (may those Charms never come back >:(). The flat "Metro"-style of Windows 8 and Windows 10 is decent, although I rather liked the "Aero Glass" style embellished by Windows 7...hopefully Aero Glass makes some sort of comeback in Windows 10..? Farewell, Internet Explorer! (although technically Windows 10 includes it for Enterprise purposes..?) I haven't tried out Microsoft Edge, although as a browser, I hope it can supersede Internet Explorer. The name is kind of underwhelming ("Edge" sounds like one of those technology buzzwords, for some reason), although I like that the "E" icon mimics the icon for Internet Explorer! :) Mozilla Firefox will still win for me as a web broswer in Windows 10, though (most likely XD). Lastly, I wish the pre-Windows 8 versions of Solitaire (and similar games) were included on Windows 10; they're like classics! The Windows Store "Modern App" versions for Solitaire and its gaming brethren are very pretty but don't quite do the originals justice (Advertisements in Solitaire? Really? -_- Apparently, it's been like that since Windows 8, but that doesn't mean that the practice should still be encouraged at all. :x) Tl;dr: Overall, Windows 10 looks largely promising compared to Windows 8 (with Classic Shell improving the Start Menu options multi-fold), although some aspects could be improved (Windows Update, Solitaire). EDIT: It seems that there have been a few quirks regarding Windows 10 installations and usage.. I hope they can be ironed out. Good example of why I tend to be averse to adopting technology on the first day - I can learn about arising mishaps from (hopefully reliable) second-hand accounts rather than encountering said mishaps firsthand and experiencing them the hard way. :x |
Same thing before I upgraded. Windows Update didn't show get windows 10 icon on the taskbar, so I download and run media tool instead.
|
I tried updating to 10 and the OS wouldn't even boot up, forcing me to use a method to revert back to 8.1
I don't know what caused this, but I'm sticking with 8.1 until Microsoft gets their shit together. |
It seems you don't meet the requirement for the upgrade. I got that when using preview version and reverts back to my old 7.
I miss the old 7, but Windows 10 boot and shut down much faster than 7 does. |
My computer doesn't suck shit, it's brand new and can play Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin.
I really don't know what caused that. |
I'm not sure why isn't it working for you. It should work just fine for new pc as long the requirement is met
|
I'm really excited for the update. It hasn't gotten to me yet, but I reserved it on the first day that we were allowed to, so now I'm just waiting.
Think I'll go ahead and upgrade as soon as I can, but I'm worried about downgrading (how I'd do that), if 10 messes up for me. :/ |
I was anxious to receive the update, so I stayed up until midnight hoping to get my reserved install first thing, but as the day went on, it was bothering me more and more that it wasn't giving me an upgrade notification. So, I went digging around, and found that using this guide and simply using the "upgrade" method, I was able to update from 8.1 to 10 on my own schedule (instead of Microsoft's).
Windows 10 is a welcome update. My machine has never run faster. Windows are snapping up instantly, applications boot at lightning speeds, and I'm pretty sure my laptop only took a total of 6 seconds to cold boot after the battery ran dry. I do have some issues with not being able to use Cortana without linking your Microsoft account to your system. They should be separate. EDIT: And screw OneDrive. I use Mega instead, and it sucks that the OneDrive folder is permanently pinned in the explorer pane. |

|
Every single time I've tried to install has failed. This last time left my computer a little bit wonky. It's extremely frustrating. I just want windows 10 dammit!
|
I've finished updating both of my computers last night to Windows 10, and so far, I'm loving what I see! All its apps are integrated within the desktop, so to speak (as in, when launching an app, it would not fill up the screen entirely, and act as a window), which is one reason as to why I'm liking it, and its interface is also more polished than before.
Although I am enjoying Windows 10, there are definitely some things here and there that don't precisely click with me, with one being system icons (I'm referring to the ones we see in places such as notification tray, Microsoft Edge, and so forth). To me, they seem a little too... thin, I suppose. I'm not sure how to explain, haha. |
Day 2 and I think that all in all Windows 10 is a fantastic upgrade, but it's killing me inside with how glitchy it has made Chrome :( I'll just have to wait for a update as yada yada Windows 10 has just been released and whatever, but combined with the glitchy mouse it's really Cramping My Style.
|
Can anybody give a quick rundown of pros/cons, and most notable features?
|
I think I have some pros and cons to list:
Pros: - Good 'ol Start menu is back, which makes it more manageable. - Microsoft Edge looks pretty promising - Metro apps can run alongside usual Windows apps without having to go into Full Screen! - You can make second or third desktop without need of using third-party software! - More ways of logging in, you can use PIN number, gestures and your face, or so I heard. - I haven't tried this one, but apparently it has built-in screen captures as well. - Cortana might be great to assist your experience in PC. However... it has some cons described below. Cons: - The white title bar is too plain in terms of Windows interface, I wish I can change it to any color of my liking. - Shorter battery life (that might be one of the early bugs found before Windows 10 was released in public, so I hope it's fixed soon). - Speaking of Cortana, if you're not in USA, UK, German, Italy, Spain, France and China, you're out of luck because you can't use it (for a meantime). |
I'm still considering on upgrading. I'll probably ask my brother or sister to try upgrading on their laptops and see how smooth it goes.
|
Mine finally upgraded after 3 tries I think? I do like it so far though! Not a huge fan of the navigation bar at the bottom but overall it's sleek and very fast. Definitely glad I updated!
|
A FAQ would be nice I could just google for the answer.
Cooking dash 2 looks terrible and I mean the cursor just trails and black square. I try to find a good compability the result are same |
Welp. My GPU didn't like the new update one bit. So much in fact I needed to fight with it for a few hours to even let me get into Windows 10 to let me go back to 8.1. ._.
New GPU on the way though so I'll try again then. I might let my laptop upgrade though just to see what it does. I've got less to lose on that thing. |

Still waiting for the Upgrade to come, and in future i will hope when i download Windows 10 nothing goes wrong :(
|
After reverting, I'm going to guess that my computer is taking its sweet time to download and prepare the upgrade again. I can wait. Who likes buggy OSes?
|
I'm really eager to upgrade, but my computer has failed to upgrade to 10 about 30 times over the last few days. I have no idea why, but it might have something to do with the fact that I build my computer, it's not from an OEM.
|
Quote:

Quote:

So the install has still not officially appeared for me.
Question for those who haven't seen it appear yet either: did you guys have clean, non-OEM installs? I seriously wonder if that's factoring into why I cannot get it downloaded. |
People still haven't gotten theirs yet? I get the feeling this is more of an end-user thing rather than Windows, because the people I've worked with/known irl have already gotten them after 48 hours. I have a feeling there's something in your computer that's not letting the upgrade go through, so I'd rather take a good look on that.
I had a similar problem in my desktop when I was trying to upgrade from 8 to 8.1. I couldn't upgrade it directly from the Shop because of an update that failed to install. So I ended up doing a factory-reset on my whole desktop, and that actually allowed the 8.1 upgrade to go through instead of going back to 8. So maybe for those of you who are still struggling to upgrade, factory-resetting your computer could be the way to go. |
Well right now I'm using Microsoft's installation media tool to see if that can force the upgrade. Hopefully that works for me.

Apparently the Windows Update "errors" when it tries to upgrade to Windows 10 are by design - it only means that it's not its time yet. Or something. (Try searching the error code and Windows 10 upgrade.)
|
Quote:
Microsoft has been rolling the upgrade out slowly rather than all at once. The "failed" message simply means that they haven't rolled it out to you yet - which is a really dumb way to communicate that to you since it makes you pull your hair out trying to fix a non-existent problem. Forcing the upgrade circumvents that though. |

This drives me mad. This morning windows 10 works peachy, but when I shut it down and turn it on during work it trashed me with 2 blue screens and luckily it still work. However, when I try to click a few things:
|
I used the Media Creation tool and it worked first time, on release day too. Sucks that literally two days after release I had to go away with nothing but my sister's Win8 laptop since I only have a desktop, and she won't want me to update it for her.
From the experience I had with 10 though, it was frickin' awesome. I especially love Edge. I never thought I'd be saying I found any browser I liked more than Chrome, let alone a Microsoft browser! Edge was a massively pleasant surprise and the only thing it's lacking so far is addons and plugins, which will be fixed over time I hope as users start to get involved. I'll be using Edge at least until Chrome starts working properly for me. I've seen a lot of ignorant hate towards Edge from people who think it's another IE, but it's worth a try. Even if you don't like it as much as I do, definitely give it a shot: it's NOT IE. Oh yeah, and as a matter of fact, GTA V was suddenly running better. I'm not sure why, but all the RAM leak related stuttering problems stopped as of Windows 10 for me. There was no GTA update to fix that either, so that was pleasant. Also psyched for DX12, can't wait to see how that pans out. |
Well, I finally got my update today and I have to say, it's nice, sort of a "what windows 8 should have been". Sadly, my Firefox is so full of addons and plugins I can't just really try Edge without missing a lot of my regular browsing experience so... I'll have a look regardless.
Now to try all the new shiny buttons in the start menu! |
Yeah, I was really impressed with Edge that I'm wanting to use it as my new browser (so I can get away from Chrome when I want to, ya know). But it doesn't have a standalone adblocking app. There *is* a way to do so, but it requires a change in the registry and I ain't gonna risk that crap.
Oh, and one thing I really, really, really love: click on the time & date on the lower right corner. |
After a few days trial and error, I finally got my Win 8.1 upgraded and dayum is Win 10 pretty! Lovin' the dark UI, and I'm delighted that the start menu has returned. Certainly have no regrets about upgrading from 8.1
I like the way a friend of mine phrased the differences between 8.1 and 10; "Windows 10 is like adulthood after the male adolescence of 8.1." Haha. |

Has anyone found a way to do that? |
Does anybody know if Windows 10 comes with a way to monitor data and what's using a lot of it? Because I've been finding just now that my internet speed has come to crawl compared to what it should be, and I didn't have this problem with Windows 8.1 at all.
And yes, I did disable peer updates, in case anyone was about to ask that. |

I've moved on to Windows 10 again...the patient way. As in, I didn't jump the queue. The installation went much smoother this time around, and I don't have any permission errors! Yay! The only thing I have to do is to reinstall two drivers that need to be reinstalled according to my laptop's manufacturer. |
Luckily, I didn't need to reinstall any drivers with my installation of Windows 10.. then again, was it because I was "wired" to the internet? :P
|
Yeah, I keep it in mind about it. It still new and plenty of bugs going on
|
Finally downloaded Windows 10.It was good fast speed, fast browser, store etc. but the white bar in Browser really not looking decent.......it need to be changed to black again.......

Uh, yeah, still don't have it. Still won't boot on my comp.
I'm sticking with Windows 8.1 on my desktop and Ubuntu on my laptop. |
