70's/80's Synth Music
For those of you who were either born or grew up in the 80's, you're probably more familiar with this type of instrument used in the songs you've listened to, called a synthesizer. It sounds something like this:
Although it was also used during the 70's, the instrument was what gave the 80's an identity, much like how certain music genres give a decade an identity (Ex: Jazz in roaring 20's, Rock in the groovy 60's, etc.). The instrument is also great for making love songs. For someone born in the 90's, I have a great liking for hearing 80's synthesizers. Nowadays, this instrument is rarely used in modern music, which baffles me, because in every music genre, despite the existence of newer models, the older models are still used in modern music. I wish to see a revival - not because today's music is bad, but it's more upbeat and you're more likely to get a song stuck in your head if an 80's synthesizer was included, considering that disco music got a recent revival with the song Uptown Funk. The most recent use of the 80's synthesizer was from Kung Fury, but I wish to see it used again in mainstream music, so I hope that one day see a modern pop song using an 80's synthesizer. Share me your thoughts on 70's/80's synth music? |
to preface: I'm pretty sure almost every modern song on the radio uses a synthesizer of some sort, but I digress. I do love a lot of '80s like synthpop-esque stuff which is I think what you're going for here. SOME EXAMPLES:
Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush Kill for Love by Chromatics (from 2012 but very '80s inspired) Personal Jesus by Depeche Mode Ghosts by Japan 100,000 Fireflies by The Magnetic Fields Temptation by New Order (!!!) The Number One Song in Heaven by Sparks Head Over Heels by Tears for Fears yeah. some of my favorites. |

When I think synthesizers I think of this:
I don't know if that's the specific synthesizer sound you mean, but for me "synthesizer" = "electronic noise sound effect thingy" |
i approve of this thread. nothing can beat the sound of 80's music and its signature synth.

The only thing about synth music I know is the soundtrack for Kung Fury and by extension David Hasselhoff.

YES!
I absolutely love 80s synth. It constitutes about 90% of the music I listen to haha. Absolute favorites: Save A Prayer by Duran Duran (may possibly be my favorite song of all time) Shout by Tears For Fears Too Shy by Kajagoogoo West End Girls by Pet Shop Boys Fly Like An Eagle by Steve Miller Band I Ran by A Flock Of Seagulls Something About You by Level 42 (not 100% synth, but the synth and instrumentals blend quite well~) Just to name a few. I love almost everything ever made by Duran Duran or Tears For Fears <3 |
