The Art School

A&D's Tutoring Program

What is the A&D Art School?

This is the Art School, founded by Aiden, now being run by Nina. The idea behind the Art School is for users who wish to learn how to create art or improve their skills with help from a Tutor, who would specialist in the skill the user wishes to learn. The Art School aims to be a users gateway into the world of A&D, allowing them to create things they may not have thought they were capable of, and also aims to give users a tool to improve and hone their skills. Essentially, the Art School fills the lack of resources for less skilled users, whilst also giving something to those users who already have a foundation of knowledge in A&D.

How does the Art School work?

The Art School functions in a class system, where a class thread for each medium and multiple tutors will come in to work with the students. There are few other things being added!

Introducing....New Thread Types!

Community Classes: Everyone who wants to learn a medium will be in a class together, and all interested tutors will work together in the thread. This way the thread will be able to keep going if a tutor needs to take a break and tutors will not be so pressured if they have so many students. Projects should be designed to accept drop in and drop out students. As always, students are encouraged to collaborate and critique with each other. The goal is that at all times there should be activity in the class. All previous classes will be converted into this thread type.

Homework Help: Either for our class or another project, students come here for individual help with projects. It can be something that you've put on yourself, but this is about help working within specifications. It can be difficult to create work and solve problems when you only have a certain amount of things you can work with. When you create a Help thread, you seriously want a lot of help and critique on a specific peice of work in it's entirety, not just a quick question.

Challenge Collaboration: There are some things we don't know! There are also subjects we don't have anyone with us who can teach us, or we don't know much about. This is what these threads are about, where we all go through materials or challenges to get better, together! Things like the Weekly Pixel Challenge and other related things will be refreshed here under this idea.

How can I sign up?

To start with, below is an application form which you should fill out as honestly as you can. It's perfectly fine to put down more than one area which you would like to learn or improve, but please be aware that classes could clash, and it's not recommended to take on more than one at any one time. Also, if your chosen area is quite broad, that is also okay, but try to be as specific as you can when stating what area you wish to learn or improve; it helps us match you with a tutor. Even if we don't have a tutor for exactly what you'd like to learn, multiple tutors may be able to coordinate with you, or a tutor may pick a new skill to teach, so don't worry! Whatever happens, we will make sure you are assigned a tutor who fits your desired area as closely as possible.
Application form:

What mediums are you interested in learning?:
Give us a small bio about your artistic history:
Why do you want to join the program?:
Where do you feel your artistic level is at?:

Interested in becoming a mentor?

That's great! We're currently looking for new tutors to improve our range of areas covered in the School! Below is another application form for you potential tutors, which you should fill out as detailed and honestly as you can, then PM the completed form to myself. I will then review your application and respond letting you know whether or not you can become a tutor. Should you be successful, you will be added to the list of available mentors, and will be able to start your classes immediately.

What you need to know before you get started

This is a fun, safe School and you should never feel intimidated by the tutors our the assignments. If you're unable to see a class through to the end, that's fine! There aren't any consequences for missing a course, or not being able to participate after signing up, but a little notice is always appreciated! Ensure you read the "About Our Tutors" section to learn a little bit about your tutors and the rules they have, because it's different for everyone!

Do's and Don't's

  • Do know that all PokéCommunity rules apply.
  • Do feel free to ask our tutors questions outside of the program if you need help.
  • Do try your best to participate and be active and attentive. If you might miss a course, let us know and reschedule!
  • Do socialize with your peers whilst learning.
  • Do have fun!
  • Don't pressure the tutors to teach you something that isn't approved.
  • Don't ask your tutor to help you with your Hack. Those questions belong in the ROM Hacking section.
  • Don't use any tutor's art without their permission. If you collaborate on a piece, always give credit!

Let's begin!

This is a fun program, designed to help you improve artistically and develop new skills, setting you on the path to a positive creative outlook. So be prepared to learn and have fun!

About Our Tutors

What we have to offer

Before you are assigned a tutor, make sure you read their application! This is mandatory, as anyone who defies any rules stipulated in their applications can be expelled from the program. These sections will tell you about what the tutors have to offer, a small biography, a syllabus, time zones, and other such relevant information. Please be aware of each tutor's individual applications and listen well!

What mediums are you interested in learning: I am interested in learning pixel art. I enjoy playing 2-D games and love the details that the pixels create.
Give us a small bio about your artistic history: I have a small understanding about sprites from playing around and revamping some Gold and Silver sprites.
Why do you want to join the program: I have nothing to tell me if I'm creating a proper sprite or if I'm going in the right direction. I want to learn from someone who has a lot of experience so that they can guide me as I create Pixel art that I envisioned.
Where do you feel your artistic level is at: I would say that it's low and I should be starting from the basic's.
Relevant contact information: P.M or Skype: Lauchil

Fairy July 20th, 2015 4:47 PM

Soulryu, I'll PM you soon. :)

Urugamosu July 20th, 2015 6:27 PM

What mediums are you interested in learning? Pixel Art & Traditional Art would be nice. Learning more CSS would be nice too.
Give us a small bio about your artistic history: Well, I've been drawing and making things for as long as I can remember. Though I made a deviantArt in 2008 and was using it until early 2013..? I got pretty good, although from then until now, I've been drawing in my book and I have gotten way better.
Why do you want to join the program? Because I'm studying Graphic Design and Arts, so I want to learn different types for art so I can be more versatile. And I feel like it's amazing to create something and feel ownership of it, I think that it amazing.
Where do you feel your artistic level is at? I'd say I'm just leaving the basic level, although I am having problems with lighting and where to shade.
Relevant contact information: PM would be fine.

Ooh this is pretty awesome! :D I do have a question though - about how long will programs go for? I'd love to sign up, but I'm not sure how available I'll be for a large part of next month so I don't know if it makes sense to! Also how often will tutoring sessions occur?

What mediums are you interested in learning?: CSS, Traditional Art
Give us a small bio about your artistic history: I took an art class in high school, I can draw things to be recognizable, but not very well.
Why do you want to join the program?: I've always wanted to learn CSS to be able to use it around the forum. I'd also love to learn how to draw and come up with some of my own projects.
Where do you feel your artistic level is at?: Beginner, but not starting from scratch.

This all depends on the tutor and their idea for the course. Courses don't have a fixed duration. I would recommend PMing the tutor who will be running the course you want to join. BUT, you can start a course, and if you are busy, you can always reschedule with your tutor to continue when you're not so busy. It's not a problem, the scheme is quite flexible!

That would be interesting. To become a tutor you will need to PM either myself or Fairy an application, using the form in the OP. We will review it and tell you if you may run a course or not.

Nolafus July 20th, 2015 9:41 PM

What mediums are you interested in learning?: Traditional art, mainly
Give us a small bio about your artistic history: I draw from time to time, but never really took it seriously. I recently did a couple pieces that I'm really proud of, and I want to build off of that.
Why do you want to join the program?: I want to really dedicate my time to get better at drawing. I'm pretty easily distracted, so having someone to keep me focused and have things laid out to keep me moving along would be great.
Where do you feel your artistic level is at?: I feel like I'm at that point where I'm beginning to grasp the basics. Nothing too complicated quite yet, but I'm getting to that point.
Relevant contact information: PM or Skype (I'm Nolafus S. on Skype, but make sure you message me on here before adding me).

I'll be gone without internet for the last week of July, so could I start after that? Or, maybe my tutor can assign me something to draw while on vacation. Either one works.

Lycanthropy July 21st, 2015 3:53 AM

This looks awesome, I might be signing up for a course of pixel art later, but I feel Fairy will be busy with others for now.

There are group classes as well as one-on-one classes. If you wish to sign up, do so, and Fairy will tell you when you can join (if not immediately).

Just sent in my tutor application. But also:

What mediums are you interested in learning? Pixel Art
Give us a small bio about your artistic history: I've been into art for most of my life and have dabbled in a number of mediums and such
Why do you want to join the program? To broaden my horizons! haha I've never really done any pixel art but I really like the way it looks, so I would love to learn more!
Where do you feel your artistic level is at? Generally at least somewhat advanced, I'd say. But new to pixel art

Oh yeah, right

What mediums are you interested in learning? Pixel art
Give us a small bio about your artistic history Regarding pixel art there's not much to tell, I've only made a grand total of four sprites I think, but I like to draw with pencil and paper in my free time (and during boring colleges).
Why do you want to join the program? I simply love pixel art as style and I want to get better at it myself.
Where do you feel your artistic level is at? Regarding pixel art just above the zero level. I've only tried it for a bit.
Relevant contact information VM, PM or Skype (aerocheese)

What mediums are you interested in learning?: Pixel Art, Traditional Art Basics
Give us a small bio about your artistic history: Ok so, I've worked a lot in photoshop, designing graphics for around four or five years now. I've occasionally dabbled in sketching, but nothing much, and certainly nothing of skill.
Why do you want to join the program?: Well, I want to broaden my artistic capabilities, and as such I want to explore various areas of art, in order to improve and find new ways to express myself.
Where do you feel your artistic level is at?: Regarding these two areas, around nill. I've very little experience in either.
Relevant contact information: Skype - firestar_84, PM and VM.

What mediums are you interested in learning?: Pixel Art, CSS
Give us a small bio about your artistic history: Ditto the mentor application! I've studied traditional art and digital painting in terms of illustration, at a professional level. I've gone through fast college courses explaining new techniques, so I'm always willing to learn!
Why do you want to join the program?: I can apply my art skills to pixel art, as well as my previous experience with it, but it's been so long and I have to relearn my patience and techniques.
While we learned basic graphic design skills in school, CSS was not required of us. I've been pretty good about just gutting other code until I get mine to work, but it's pretty frustrating not having a more indepth understanding of what goes wrong or how to approach coding a layout.
Where do you feel your artistic level is at?: In terms of graphic design I would consider myself having an average understanding and eye for design. Specific CSS coding I would consider myself intermediate, I can make anything work, it's just frustrating. Illustrative work I would consider myself professional, but there is much more I can learn.

Oh gosh my pixel art class is going to be a crazy one, isn't it? I didn't expect such a turn out!

Everyone sit tight, I'm still working out a few things right now but I'll be posting a thread for the official Pixel Art class soon enough! I will be teaching in a class setting, meaning there will be multiple students so threads, skype group chats, and mass PMs will be our main way of communication and sharing. Obviously extra time can and will be put aside for each student individually should they want it.

If anyone wants to work specifically one on one, let me know so we can make plans. I'm assuming everyone is okay with a class setting but if you're not for any reason, get in touch with me.

Circuit July 26th, 2015 3:15 AM

Okay all, I will be starting the CSS class tomorrow! Everyone who has signed up will receive a PM, letting you know, but if you read it here too then you're doubly prepared!

EDIT: It was gonna be a PM, then I thought quoting everyone would be easier. Hope that's ok!

Aquacorde July 28th, 2015 4:32 PM

hi im back <3

What mediums are you interested in learning?
I'd like to develop in the basics of traditional art please!

Give us a small bio about your artistic history
I've never had more formal instruction than a painting class in the fourth grade? And that was an impressionist painting class. Mostly I've been learning by observation and copying from other art. I've done a lot of CSS and graphics and whatever in my time as well.

Why do you want to join the program?
I've been drawing on an off since I was young and have recently been working more in varying styles and paying attention to lighting and anatomy and that but I have no idea where to go. I'd like to have some sort of actual help and structure to develop basic skills. Shapes, perspective, anatomy, lighting, etc.

Where do you feel your artistic level is at?
Not... awful?

Sorry I haven't got anything going for traditional art yet.

I'm back home and the internet here hasn't been working properly for almost 2 weeks and the provider hasn't really helped us much despite several increasingly annoyed phone calls.
We hope to get it fixed next week. Fingers crossed!

Basically, you're gonna be expected to have resources on-hand. If you don't, you'll have to look them up and stuff. C4Ds are just the start when it comes to signature designing, but I will probably teach you one-on-one since no one else seems interested so far, so don't worry, you have everything you would need to improve and ask questions and so on. I'll start the signature class soon ^-^

What mediums are you interested in learning? Signature, CSS
Give us a small bio about your artistic history I've done tags/sigs for awhile, basically it though.
Why do you want to join the program? I'd love to be more active in this section and in graphics as a whole, I've been doing tags for awhile but I can't say I've made any improvements in recent memory. Basic CSS has also always interested me, tbh the "programming" aspect always intimidated me.
Where do you feel your artistic level is at? Idk hard to gauge, I've been around for awhile but I've got a lot of techniques I'd love to learn.
Relevant contact information I have Skype if that's what's being used

lol whoops, didn't realize CSS already started

What mediums are you interested in learning? Traditional art, more specifically shading with colored pencils
Give us a small bio about your artistic history

I've always loved art, however when I was in elementary school I had a bad art teacher who told me I would never be good at art so I stopped trying. But when I moved up to grade 6 I had a teacher who encouraged me and I ended up creating great pictures/portraits with graphite pencil. Ever sience then I've been hooked and can't stop drawing. I also love oil pastels however I don't have any atm :(
Why do you want to join the program?
I no longer have time for art classes in my school schedule due to AP classes.
Where do you feel your artistic level is at?
Fairly good with drawing/shading with graphite but not with anything else
Relevant contact information
pm on the forums will do or skype I have that too

Fairy August 10th, 2015 6:03 PM

Awesome, excellent to have you new guys on board. :) It may be a little bit, since most of the tutors are currently running a class, but I personally will be taking on the next traditional course going up so I'll make sure everyone gets notified!

I also think, in the future, I'm going to be splitting up my pixel art lesson into a beginner and advanced program, since there's so much I'd like to cover haha.

What mediums are you interested in learning? Right now I desided to go for CSS.
Give us a small bio about your artistic history I've been dabbling in all kinds of art till childhood: pottery, drawing, paper making, knitting, origami, more drawing, digital photo collage, and others.
Why do you want to join the program? Recently I've been stumbling about layouting with CSS a lot and so far I feel I don't even know what that is. So I hope to get an idea what you can do with CSS and learn some code, so I have a basis to build on.
Where do you feel your artistic level is at? I've never even so much as touched CSS, but I have done some layouting with html and wikitext, so I think with good explanation a lot of the basics should come easily to me.
Relevant contact information PM here should work. I can also give out E-Mail or skype, but not in public. My time zone is central Europe. I might be on somewhere between 8am and 5am, more likely between 11am to 2am (right now it's 12:30).

Also make sure to check out the newly added tutor jazzyjazz666! Jazzy will be teaching sculpture and various 3D arts, so make sure you read the outline so you know what tools you'll need beforehand. What? Art School? I may be giving this a go, but who knows how it will turn out in the end.

What mediums are you interested in learning? Pixel or Traditional Art. Basically want to create art from the computer.
Give us a small bio about your artistic history: I have no history of being an artist, which means I've actually never tried before. Fairy designed my current signature, but that was when she was known as Alexial.
Why do you want to join the program? Because, as previously stated, I have never drawn art on the computer, not even tried. It's crazy but I would like to learn. It would be a good experience.
Where do you feel your artistic level is at? On regular drawings on paper, I draw like a kid. But that personally doesn't matter.
Relevant contact information: P.M me here. I always check for them! I am available in the morning, from 8:00 A:M to Noon, on weekends to 1:00 P.M.

What mediums are you interested in learning?
It would be only Pixel Art as for now.
Give us a small bio about your artistic history
Well, I have started drawing back in 2006, at the age of 12. Two years later I became interested in pixel art. However, I have stopped doing anything creative for a pretty long while, somewhere around 2012-13, and it lasted till few weeks ago.
Why do you want to join the program?
I got rusty. Sooo rusty.
Where do you feel your artistic level is at?
I wouldn't say it is bad, however it isn't as good as I would like it to be.

Uuuhhh
What mediums are you interested in learning?
fakemon spriting, I'm interested in learning the steez. BuuUUuUUT whenever I try, I just revert into a shitty mix of what I'm used to and pokemons.
I'm not looking for anything super formal, just someone to lead me in the right direction 'til I get the hang of it
Give us a small bio about your artistic history
I started Fire Emblem spriting like 2 years ago and in terms of pixel art that's literally all I've done. I don't know any other style except for my own which is not relevant to any of this haha.
Why do you want to join the program?
So I can understand the secrets of these absurd sprites
Where do you feel your artistic level is at?
I know the basics, splicing is easy. My big weakness is my tendency to pillow shade if I'm not careful/ if i can't find a reference image.
keegan_25 is my skype

hope i did this right :P

What mediums are you interested in learning
Pixelart. Definitely pixelart. The coolest type of art there is IMO :P
Give us a small bio about your artistic history
I have honestly no art history at all. I have tried a bunch of times to draw something and have attempted pixelart, but I always miserably fail.. :/
Why do you want to join the program?
As I previously stated, I always miserably fail at pixelart. I hope in joining the program so that I can change this and will hopefully learn how to sucessfully make my own pixelart.
Where do you feel your artistic level is at?
1/10. (I draw like a child). The fact that this is the case has always bugged me, so again I hope to change this.

What mediums are you interested in learning? Pixelart, Character drawing (I don't know what that fits in xD)
Give us a small bio about your artistic history: I make drawings for fun sometimes and I usually work in contests for a fakemon region i like.
Why do you want to join the program? Because I feel like my drawings suck and I want to make them better.
Where do you feel your artistic level is at? 4/10. Harshly 5.

What mediums are you interested in learning? Pixle art for now!
Give us a small bio about your artistic history:
I grew up loving art and wanting to be creative! I love all art but I don't like to paint it is the one kind of art I don't understand. My most prominent skill is sketching. I sketch most of the sprites I make then I make them sprites however they normally don't end up with the same look I was going for. My art skills blossomed young when I saw someone sketch a Noctowl (In full detail) by looking at a TCG card. I had asked them if they would make me one and they very rudely told me to do it myself. So I did and ended up with a beautiful (if not completely finished cause I was at day care and my mom showed up to get me before I was done) Noctowl picture! I would post a pick but the picture went missing.
Why do you want to join the program? Cause I would love to improve my artistic skills and learn knew ones as well!
Where do you feel your artistic level is at? On a scale of 1 to 10 I would say 4-5ish I am not bad but I know I am not as good as I could be.
Relevant contact information: Um do I have to put something here? If so then I might give an email but not in a comment. I will only share it in a PM.

Pixel art
Give us a small bio about your artistic history
I'm good at drawing simple pokemon, as long as I have a picture to work with. I'm really bad at pixel art, and drawing fakemon on paper.
Why do you want to join the program?
I want to learn more about art, it interests me. also it dissapoints me when I have a great idea for a fakemon but I can't make it.
Where do you feel your artistic level is at?
Beginner. I've had a tiny bit of practice, but I'm not very good.

What mediums are you interested in learning? I'm interested in learning pixel art.
Give us a small bio about your artistic history. I'm currently learning how to draw manga, I can also sketch some Pokemon. (And by some, I mean three. Voltorb and Electrode are two of them...)
Why do you want to join the program? I'd like to join the program because I've always wanted to make good pixel art, just for fun.
Where do you feel your artistic level is at? Well, I'd say beginner. But I can sketch! Kind of...
Relevant Contact Information You can contact me via PM or email, which I'll only give via PM. ;)

What mediums are you interested in learning?
Digital Drawing and Pixel Art

Give us a small bio about your artistic history
I do not have any real training. Drawing used to be a real passion of mine when I was younger. I used to draw fake yugioh cards when I was much, much younger. In middle school I had co students teach me some drawing techniques which really helped me. In 8th grade I drew sonic fan art and when I entered into 9th grade my subject had shifted to whatever I wanted it to be. I have done a few traditional pieces in the last year, but I haven't got to scan those yet. After High School I didn't have anyone I could really get excited about art with aside from the random edits for RPG maker games.
Off Topic: (I've just moved last week, and I haven't got to unpacking my printer. Then I need to find the wires for it. Also waiting on 2 paychecks to reach my hand. It may be another month until I have my habitat the way I like it, and when that's done I'll scan the few pieces of the last year.)

Why do you want to join the program?
I do not grow on my own. I like being around people who enjoy creating art, and can provide me with feedback. Having someone to guide me, and mold me would be a tremendous boost to my confidence and hopefully will show through in my work as well.

Where do you feel your artistic level is at?
My level is all over the place. At the moment I want to say complete novice
Here's a link to an album of digital art on imgur I created to gauge my 'skill'
also this piece of rwby fanart (unfinished)

What mediums are you interested in learning?: Pixel Art, CSS

Give us a small bio about your artistic history: I've messed around with a small bit of pixel art before. Admittedly, I'm not good, but I've tried to learn in the past. For CSS, I expect to pick it up more quickly since I'm a programmer.
In recent history, the best I've done is a poorly done pixel over seen here(quality of the image has dropped? no sure why) : http://i.imgur.com/eJnD4kX.png
I've also done some minor editing of Kyledove's tiles here (circled) : http://i.imgur.com/PYWuPbS.png

Why do you want to join the program?: Purely out of curiosity and interest. I don't have any special reasons such as future plans related to art or anything. I'm just really fond of looking at people's pixel art and other illustrations on deviantart and other places (including here!). I'd like to give it a serious try!

Where do you feel your artistic level is at?: Not very high. I think I have some of the basic basic concepts down such as smooth lines, coloring, maybe shading to basic degree(?). As for CSS on PC, I used to know once upon 6 or so years ago. I haven't touched it since, and have forgotten!

Relevant contact information: VM, PM, IRC, PC's Battle server, you can text me if you want (I have a cellphone but I'd rather not post my phone number publicly).

Hoping to be a student when the revamp is done.

What mediums are you interested in learning?: Illustration, specifically learning how to draw in the Sugimori style.
Give us a small bio about your artistic history: I've been drawing digitally for about 10 years now, but lately I've been in a "slump," I guess you could say. it just takes me a lot of time to finish an image, so I'm unmotivated to finish my artwork. I usually stop after the lineart stage. I used to sprite a little, but I was always terrible.
Why do you want to join the program?: Mainly, I'm trying to make a Pokemon/Monster Hunter game using Essentials. Most creatures from MonHan are too complicated to sprite, and I think being able to draw them in Sugi style would be a great help.
Where do you feel your artistic level is at?: I think it's above average. Not as good as you might expect from 10 years but I can hold my own.
Relevant contact information: PM me for a Skype name, AIM name, e-mail, or Steam chat name. I'm just a bit to shy to post those publicly.

What mediums are you interested in learning?
Pencil drawing, I do like to expand for scenery drawings.

Give us a small bio about your artistic history.
Well when I was in primary school, I did not learn any art things, but I do like drawing especially buildings or roads when I was small because I do like it. Most of my drawings previously were not that good, my friends teased me for bad drawings so I hid all my drawings and did not draw again.

Till recent years in secondary school, I learned some art skills from my teacher and improved my drawing little by little. I tried to draw different things and it was quite fun to draw.

Why do you want to join the program?

I want to explore the world of art so I can get to know more about it and try out different things.

Where do you feel your artistic level is at?
I would say Novice level, referring to my drawings.

Relevant contact information: You can PM me for getting skype and discord username ;)

What mediums are you interested in learning?: I'm a fairly simple 'old chap with simple interests. Pencil, Pen, and Graphic Design. I want to do some Pixel art as well, but it's not a main priority quite yet. I have experience in Charcoal and Conte, but am not the biggest fan of those.
Give us a small bio about your artistic history: I'm someone who naturally desires to be a creator - I love to cook, compose, write, draw... Anything that involves inventing! This should be a world we give to, not take from. I've felt this way for a while now, and it dates back to me simply wanting to learn how to draw anime in high school. A couple years of mediocrity later, and now I'm taking Drawing I. Not sure what else I can say!
Why do you want to join the program?: You kidding me? This is an opportunity to receive feedback, improve, and help other artists. Who could ever pass up an opportunity like that? Not me, that's for sure.
Where do you feel your artistic level is at?: I can draw in two point perspective. That's about it.
Relevant contact information: Hit me at [email protected] if you need to. Private Messages on here, generally.

What mediums are you interested in learning?: Pixel art
Give us a small bio about your artistic history: Not much. I learnt how to do 3d in blender but I've never done/published anything really
Why do you want to join the program?: I'm interested in pixel art in general, and I'd like to learn the techniques and skills so I don't just draw block-colour ugliness.
Where do you feel your artistic level is at?: Not very good at all, I understand things like light&shade but I've never been able to make it look right
Relevant contact information: You can VM and PM here on PC, I'm @lucario on the discord so you can contact me there as well if you want.

Unfortunately, it's not currently still working! However if you have any particular things you want to learn or ask about, if you open up a discussion thread in the main area for the time being, I'll be sure to help you in any way I can and find resources for you!
