Have you ever run out of PP and had to use Struggle during a battle?

I did in my very first file I did, when I thought I thought avoid trekking back to a Pokemon Center and just use a lot of Potions to keep myself going. I didn't even think that something like this would exist; I thought I'd get all my moves back or something. xD

I do not believe so. I usually just switch out if that happens. Maybe, but I can't remember.

DraconianWing October 3rd, 2015 9:29 PM

I've done it before in a Battle Factory match in SoulSilver; both mine as well as my opponent's team were heavily stall-based, so there were a lot of turns wasted in favor of Protect or residual damage. That was the only case I can remember though. Most of the time I'm either stocked up on Ether/Elixir that I've collected throughout my walkthrough, or fresh out of the Pokemon Center.

I believe I have once, maybe even twice! I can't remember when exactly as it was some time ago, only I do recall having trouble with Cynthia in Pearl on my first play-through when I was abusing Revives and Full Restores haha. ^ ^;

I was a noob then, y'see.

I'm pretty efficient on using moves with 5 or 10 PP because those moves are powerful and have a very little accuracy, so no. I don't run out of PP and force to use struggle :P

This has happened to be me often in competitive play but not so much in the normal game play. It's happened once or twice but that was early in the game against those Pokemon that spam Harden when you've only got tackle xD

Well there was that one time when I was playing a randomized Emerald and I had a Wobbufett and I ran into another Wobbufett. That was fun.

Sopheria October 4th, 2015 6:27 AM

This happened to me just yesterday when I was re-challenging the Elite Four in Omega Ruby. My Heatran only had Fire Blast, Hyper Beam, Ancientpower, and Earthquake (25 PP total). Since it was my only Poke at a high enough level to take on the E4 (the rest were low level Pokemon I was trying to level up with the Exp Share), it was basically the only Pokemon I was actively using. So by The time I got to Glacia I was out of PP. Oops.

I've had this happen during Elite Four and I for some reason had no way to restore so I ended up having to redo it. Other than that it's random times during trainer battles, but struggling was during the Elite Four especially.

It only happened to me in battles on Showdown and not in the actual games for some reason but that's because I like to conserve PP. Once you do get Struggle going, there's a high chance you will end up killing yourself before you kill the foe.

I don't think I've ever had that happen to me, but I've had it happen to legendary Pokemon at 1HP. Yep, good times.

Ughhhhhh, that's happened to me too. It's definitely not fun when that happens.

It happens to me a lot in ORAS. Sometimes it makes me just want to toss a masterball at it and be done. But, I end up resetting and trying again.

Question of the Day

What's one thing you would change about or add to the main series Pokemon games to make them more challenging?

Crystal Berry October 4th, 2015 8:34 PM

I would make EXP share change back to how it was in the previous generations, and I would have gym leaders and elite four members have access to exclusive moves that you can't learn yourself. To put into perspective an elite four member could have a Psycho Boost Alakazam, or a Tail Glow Raichu. It would be really fun I think! :)

Add in a level cap mode that stops you from going above a certain level until you beat a Gym Leader. Removing the ability to grind would probably increase the challenge significantly...or at the very least, force you to take advantage of the game's other mechanics.

Make EXP Share an item instead a key item, Gym leader rematches with mega stones and stronger level and more puzzling hms or path

Make Gym Leaders/E4 use more than one type of pokémon so you can't just sweep them all.

How about making event battles such as Gym Leaders, villainous bosses, the Elite Four, etc. competitive? As in, both teams Pokemon would be adjusted to the same level for the duration of the battle (like having a level cap like in BattleSpot and the level 50 cap it has). They could also have full teams of six Pokemon. Honestly though, while that sounds like a ton of fun, I really don't want it to happen >~<

Doing away with the EXP Share, and the need to grind. Making the Elite Four teams built on themes, rather than monotyping. Having dual-typed teams is fine though, I just want to up the ante and have the E4 be less of a pushover. Oh and Game Freak, when you introduce new battle formats, how about actually letting them have a prevalence in the games? More Inverse Battles NPCs seems more sensible and contribute to a greater challenge and more fun (likewise for other modes like Triples and Rotations). xx

Removing the shift mode, forcing people to play in set mode. Why would every other trainer announce which Pokémon he's going to use so that you can switch in a type advantage? You don't let them do that either, how's that fair?

I would change the current Exp Share to Exp All and make it obtainable late in the game. I would then bring back the Exp Share hold item for use otherwise. I think it would also have benefits post game, say if you only wanted to give exp to a single Pokemon. The Gen 6 exp share should stay though, in some form, just not obtainable so quickly.

Sopheria October 5th, 2015 2:38 PM

Yea, the Exp Share (the 6th gen style one) is definitely a big one. I always do miss the old style Exp Share that you give to your Pokemon as a hold item.

One big thing that I would definitely change is, I would make the AI smarter. Having them play more strategically, like utilizing type advantages, predicting your next move, switching out, etc. I've always felt like that'd make the games a lot more fun and challenging! But that might just be the competitive battler in me talking ;3

Well, you may be on to something there. Perhaps one way to add challenge to the game is to add the concept of difficulty levels. There could be the normal mode, where everything is as it is, and then you can have a sort-of challenge mode, where everything is as you suggestion. Huh, interesting. I think that could work out.

Perhaps the player can select which mode to play in at the beginning OR always give them the option to go between the modes throughout their play though. So if they feel it's too challenging, they go to normal, and vice versa. Neat!

DraconianWing October 5th, 2015 4:30 PM

Extend the Elite Four/Champion Pokemon rematch level to the late 80s-early 90s, with Egg moves included in some movesets. I find that Exp. fodder (ie. the Chansey line and Audino) is much easier to find and farm in the newer games, so getting an entire team to level 70 is not as difficult as it used to be.
