Games you should have played, but (criminally) haven't...

Are there any games that you KNOW are games that you SHOULD play, but for some reason, haven't gotten around to it? Games that you feel are on almost every "essential must-play video games" list? Why haven't you played them yet?!

There are so many damned games out there that it's impossible to play them all. Being a millennial growing up chiefly in the 2000s, I spent most of my time with the brand-new GameCube and the Game Boy Advance. I also came from a family where money was tight so getting all the new systems and games was sparse. It wasn't until recently that I could buy the stuff I sorely missed with my own money.

I'll post some of those games later.

Cherrim September 15th, 2015 6:14 PM

  • Chrono Cross
  • Tales of Phantasia
  • Tales of Destiny
  • Final Fantasy IX
  • Super Mario RPG
  • Animal Crossing (any)
  • League of Legends
  • Legend of Zelda
They're all games that I either should have played by now or get talked about so much in my circles that I feel bad not having at least tried them... :(

There's a whoooole other list of games that everyone "should" play that I tried and either failed at or hated/couldn't get into but I'm too ashamed to admit some of them. XD;

Otamajakushi September 15th, 2015 6:15 PM

Admittedly, Super Mystery Dungeon will be my first Mystery Dungeon game. I'm really looking forward to it, and I hope I like it so I can play the other ones.

I've also never played a Legend of Zelda game. Tri Force Heroes and Wind Waker HD will be my first foray into the Legend of Zelda Universe.

Another one that's stuck out for me over the years was Sonic 3D Blast. I got it as a kid, but have never made significant progress in it.

Bay September 15th, 2015 6:38 PM

Dragon Age: Origins and Skyrim. I have both of them but I haven't gotten around to playing them yet because either another video game or something else distracts me. Well Dragon Age: Origins I want to get a new controller for my computer, but I've been delaying that haha.

Sydian September 15th, 2015 9:17 PM

- Final Fantasy 7

Not really? I mean, I have a ton of games on my backlog that I've bought and just haven't gotten around to yet, so I really should play those because otherwise I've wasted my money, but in terms of "MUST PLAY!" games...well, why must I play them?

I know I'm not going to like games like Persona 3, Kingdom Hearts II, and The World Ends With You - to name but three people keep trying to ram down my throat - so why should I feel obligated to put myself through the misery of enduring them, when I'll get no satisfaction out of it? Majority does not make right. They don't look appealing, so I don't feel I should play them, even though other people feel I should. It all comes down to personal taste and, contrary to popular belief, you don't have to experience a game firsthand to know whether or not you're going to enjoy it.

I don't think any games are essential, must-play titles. Play what looks appealing to you and don't worry about what other people think you should play if you happen to enjoy something. The only reasons you should have for not playing a video game is either because you don't own it or you simply haven't had the time.

Brendino September 15th, 2015 11:59 PM

There are plenty of Nintendo games I haven't played, simply because I've never any of their consoles outside the handhelds. I'm not going to list which ones I've missed out on here, because I know there are a bunch of them.

Other than that, I've owned both Mass Effect 3 and Red Dead Redemption for a good number of years now, but never played them, even though I kept saying I would. Now that my PS3 no longer works, I doubt I'll ever get a chance to play them now, and I'm kicking myself over it.

Satoshi Ookami September 16th, 2015 1:39 AM

Normally I would answer with God Eater, but I finally started the PSP version so... there goes that =D

I don't particularly think Dragon Age is the sort of game that you should wait for a controller to play. Maybe Dragon Age 2, possibly Inquisition (?), but Origins is a CRPG and...I mean, I won't say the controls are bad, but it certainly is an interesting choice of game to wait for a controller to play. Skyrim I'd believe, though.

Spinosaurus September 16th, 2015 2:00 PM

Meroid Prime

I own the game. I played it. But every time I do I cant go more than 15 mins without getting nauseous. Not sure if this fits the thread though.

I'm not mentioning games that are ridiculously priced nowadays obviously lol.

I am a horror fan who has never played a Silent Hill game before. One time I almost played a demo I had for Silent Hill 4, but my young self was a lot more cowardly in the face of horror, so I could never really get past the main menu.

I had really hoped to make Silent Hills my first in the series with how much potential it had, but now it seems all hope of that are lost. I can't see Silent Hill 1 being as scary as it may have been when it came out, but maybe I can find Silent Hill 4 and relive that little nightmare.

thedestinedblade September 16th, 2015 3:58 PM

- I have never touched a game in the Metroid series.
- Any of the Disgaea games
- Okami, which has been sitting in my collection of games for about 4 years now.
- Tried only one of the Metal Gear games.
- Castlevania series
- Advance Wars series

That's just off the top of my head. I'm probably missing a few obvious ones.

I guess a part of me is afraid I'll be frustrated with trying to use the keyboard as I don't play much games like Dragon Age and using a controller might be easier. Is it CRPG? I always thought it's just an RPG (or WRPG I often heard). Eh, whatever. Maybe I'll give my keyboard/mouse a try eventually. As for Skyrim, I have the XBox 360 version, just haven't gotten to it yet.

mannakete September 16th, 2015 6:17 PM

Oh probably most games that came out during the entirety of the n64/SNES's lifespan. The only ones I personally played then was... Pokemon Colliseum.
Then Chrono Trigger (my brother tried to get me to play it by buying me the ds remake).
In general, probably anything that isn't an obscure/ish/unpopular/not-as-beloved Japanese role playing game.
(now if you want games that I HAVE played but "criminally" never bothered to finish: FF7)

edit: OH, I forgot. While I'm a big Fire Emblem fan now, I have personally only played Awakening.
All my Elibe/Sacred Stones/Tellius knowledge is from re-reading the same LP 4 times

most of the Kingdom Hearts games (except for the first one and Re: Coded, which i did play)
Destiny

WolfAndSheep September 16th, 2015 7:47 PM

I've played at least one of the games in the series commonly listed here :x I'm kind of impressed with myself all of a sudden. I'll just scribble down things that come to mind that I hear a lot about but haven't really touched.

- Xenoblade
- Everything published by Valve
- Five Nights at Freddies / Amnesia / any of those popular lets play community type games
- Pretty much every single Mario game ever
- Splatoon
- The SMT series that isn't Persona 3 & 4
- The Tales series that isn't Vesperia
- Fire Emblem that isn't FE:A
- League of Legends or any MOBAs in general
- God of War
- Dark Souls
- Megaman
- The Witcher

How come it makes you nauseous? :o

I do hope you can overcome whatever it is. I've played through Metroid Prime and am currently in the middle of the Prime 2 (Echoes), and I found Prime very enjoyable, moreso than Echoes even (not that Echoes is bad - I just found Prime more fun).

I'd also like to be able to play other Metroid games after I finish the Prime games. It seems to be an excellent series overall.

I'm not a fan of the series :(

I've played like. The original Super Mario Bros, I just found it annoying because I suck at 2d platformers so it set the tone for the series for me. Then I played a bit of Super Mario sunshine which was just a giggle because I was running around with a squirt gun and that's it.

We own all the games though because my brother is a big fan. I'm just shameless and won't play them :V

Ah I assumed you never played a game in the series which I thought was pretty bizarre if you're into this hobby.

Not liking them is completely fair and I won't judge you for it haha. For what it's worth though the original Mario is clearly a product of its time, and Sunshine is unpolished and often regarded as one of the worst in the series.

Mainly the field of view being really narrow, and I'm assuming 60fps is another factor as well

Dusk September 16th, 2015 10:08 PM

There are a lot of games I should have played or finished, but I'm gonna keep my list to things I actually want to try in the foreseeable future.

- The Zero Escape series. I remember Danganronpa being reviewed as "a mix between Zero Escape and Ace Attorney." I love Ace Attorney and Danganronpa... so why haven't I played a Zero Escape game yet?!
- Ace Attorney Investigations 2. The game never released outside Japan. The fan translation rom patch has been out for years now, yet I still haven't gotten around to playing it.
- Many of the older Fire Emblem games. Particularly the ones officially released outside Japan. I'm currently making progress with Blazing Sword. Next will probably be Sacred Stones... and the Tellius games, if I can manage to get my hands on them, haha!
- Earthbound. There are a lot of classic JRPGs I should have played by now, many of which are listed in this thread... but these days I'm really iffy about starting JRPGs since they're generally so beefy and can be huge timesinks I sometimes get easily distracted away from. But Earthbound calls to be for some reason.

I can understand the field of view, but what framerate does the game run at, anyway (since I'm no good at telling framerates without a counter)? Do you mean that 60fps is nauseating? I would imagine it would have the opposite effect.

I happen to be playing through Earthbound right now as well. It's fun once you get into it and understand it. Gruelling at times, but enjoyable.

Lost Odyssey and Sunset Overdrive comes to mind.

Megan September 17th, 2015 5:41 AM

- Phoenix Wright AA: Dual Destinies

- Pokemon DPPt (any of them)
- any Final Fantasy after 7
- any Super Smash Bros. game
- Splatoon
- any Metroid game
- any Kingdom Hearts game
- any Metal Gear game
- any Fallout game
- any Mass Effect game
- TLoZ Majora's Mask
- Bastion
- any Mother game

mew_nani September 17th, 2015 4:58 PM

I have in my tablet a copy of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and I've never played it. I am ashamed; I've played all the others that came out before it besides Rondo of Blood.

There's also other games I have on my to play pile like Earthbound, A Link Between Worlds, Final Fantasy I, V, VIII, IX and X (I did play Fantasy War but I don't think that counts), Zelda II, Final Fantasy VII for NES (yes, that's a thing), X-Men for the Genesis, Sonic Generations...

Yeah, there's a lot of games on there.

Wicked3DS September 17th, 2015 6:16 PM

My list is pretty much...any Zelda game.

Garison September 17th, 2015 8:22 PM

Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii or N3DS would do)
Sonic Generations
Soul Calibur 5
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Skyward Sword.
Kid Icarus: Uprising
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn and Binding Blade (why can't you just translate it?)
Disney Infinity
Pokemon X and Y

Burn me at the stake.

Give me a minute I need to gather some wood and get some rope.

I feel like I have a long list of games that I should play but haven't yet. x: I just can't think of any names right now.

Oh yeah, almost every Assassin's Creed game. My brother owns all of them and I've only touched 2 and 4 so far.

Sammi September 20th, 2015 6:57 AM

Since I haven't played a good variety of games in awhile, there's probably way too many to list.

Sticking to stuff I can actually play:
- Majora's Mask, and I didn't beat OoT either...
- Anything Fire Emblem -- my roommate has Awakening but it's a digital copy on his 3DS.
- Bravely Default (same as FE)
- Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance (haven't played any KH since Birth By Sleep actually)
- Really should pick up Dual Destinies sometime... last Ace Attorney I played was #4.

Never done any Metriod or Donkey Kong game, I think I've played around a Star Fox game for like 15 minutes, no Earthbound/Mother 3... and I haven't even attempted to think of anything outside of Nintendo or on Nintendo platforms yet...

Yeah like I said it's probably way too much. D:

Dter ic September 20th, 2015 10:25 AM

Zero escape: I remember seeing everyone praising this game upon it's release yet I haven't played it. I do love good story telling so I think I'll enjoy playing this.

The Zelda series: I don't really like the characters enough to just pick any game from the series.

Ace Attorney
: I remember playing a little bit of the first game but then leaving it. Maybe I'll like it again if I continue on.

younglink198 September 22nd, 2015 12:04 AM

For me the games that I mean to play but never get around to it are:
- The Evil Within
- Kingdom Hearts
- The Darkness (Started never Finished)

Frozen Lotus September 22nd, 2015 7:33 AM

Tons, especially modern games. A large part of this is because many, many AAA games that get tons of praise end up really disappointing me, so I usually just play what shows the most promise to me personally and don't bother playing things purely based on popularity, but some examples of really major games I've yet to play...

(Note: I've marked games I've played a demo of with a *.)

99% of popular PC exclusives
99% of popular shooters
99% of popular JRPGs
90% of popular racing games
Many popular indie games
Anything exclusive to Wii U*
Anything exclusive to XB1
Until Dawn
Alien: Isolation
MGS series*
The Elder Scrolls 1-4
Half the GTA games
Just Cause series
Destiny*
Banjo-Tooie
The Witcher series
Most Final Fantasy games
Kingdom Hearts BBS & DDD
Uncharted series
Tomb Raider* (except remake)
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Starcraft II
Metroid Prime series
Mass Effect 2 & 3
Portal 2
Fallout 1 & 2
Resident Evil 5
Beyond Good & Evil
Mortal Kombat X
Castlevania III
Most portable Zelda titles
Donkey Kong series (except a little of DKC1)
Fire Emblem series*
Minecraft*
Sonic Colors
Yoshi's Island
Ratchet & Clank series
Crash Bandicoot 2 & 3
Any Spyro game except the first
Batman Arkham series (except Asylum)
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Sly Cooper series
Phoenix Wright series
Xenoblade Chronicles
Kid Icarus Uprising

Many, many others but these seemed the most prominent off the top of my head. Now, if this was a list of popular games I've never FINISHED... I don't think I'd have time to type it out.

HollyYoshi September 22nd, 2015 10:05 AM

Here's one, LoZ Majora's Mask. I haven't played many Zelda games to begin with, but MM is the one that most interests me. I've just never gotten around to playing it.

Legobricks September 22nd, 2015 5:31 PM

I've been told in multiplicity that I'd probably like Valkyria Chronicles, and I never bought it, but recently I was gifted it and now I'm like "hey guise this game is pretty gud".

Also Dwarf Fortress because the learning curve is more like a hangover cliff.

Adore September 23rd, 2015 12:13 AM

  • Bioshock
  • Mass Effect
  • Legend of Zelda
  • Fire Emblem

The first two are due to a lack of necessary systems. The latter two are just due to lack of interest.

Winter September 23rd, 2015 1:09 AM

Mother, Metroid, Animal Crossing, Skyrim, Persona, Five Nights at Freddy's, Half Life, Borderlands, Grand Theft Auto, Assassin's Creed, Fire Emblem, Portal, Mass Effect, and any PlayStation-specific title. Definitely more to the list because I'm always lagging behind what's hot and hip in the video game world xD

It's usually 1) don't have the console or money to buy and play or 2) a lack of interest.

☆Rei☆ September 23rd, 2015 7:13 AM

The Batman Arkham Games,
The Borderlands Games,
The Bioshock Games,
The Counter Strike Games,
The Crysis Series,
Don't Starve,
Evolve,
Left 4 Dead (1 & 2),
Rust,
Bloodborne,
and a few more.

What's more ironic is that I own all the games I mentioned above, but I haven't even done anything in said games yet. (Except for maybe Batman Arkham Knight)

I really need to play more different games, but I get hooked on games like Destiny and Halo and it takes forever for me to get bored with them. xD

Palkia September 25th, 2015 8:06 AM

- Metal Gear
- Most Zelda games (aside from the DS games, those were good)
- Most recent AAA games
- Minecraft (I just bought it lol)
- F-Zero (idk)

Judge Mandolore Shepard September 25th, 2015 10:15 AM

For game series that I have listed here that I have not played it is because either I don't have the right system, I am not interested in the series, or I don't know if the series would interest me

Persona
Splatoon
Metal Gear
Ace Attorney
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Counter Strike

plus a few others
