Last movie you watched? Edition II

quite self-explanatory: what was the last movie you watched and what did you think of it? (: (: (: go into as much detail as you'd like.

Judge Mandolore Shepard September 27th, 2015 2:47 AM

The last movie I watched on Netflix was The Man Who Never Was. It is a 1956 movie about the World War II Operation Mincemeat. Course another way of calling it is how a dead man tricked the German high command into believing the Allied invasion of Sicily would actually be happening at Greece and Sardinia. Overall, I thought the movie was quite good.

Captain Gizmo September 27th, 2015 10:38 AM

The Last House on the Left (1972)

It's a very good movie. Wes Craven's directorial debut with an exploitation horror film. It already tells you that Wes Craven will be a very good horror connoisseur.

I can see why the movie was controversial for it's time. The rape scenes were pretty bothersome for me, but it was pretty much meant to be, according to Wes Craven.

All in all, I loved the movie, very well done with a low budget and I actually wanna see the remake since Wes Craven WANTED to make a remake of it to do all of the scenarios that he couldn't do back in the days due to budget restraints and time issues.

Thor: The Dark World

It's a toss-up between this and Guardians of the Galaxy as to which is my current favourite MCU movie. It depends on my mood, really - Guardians has the better humour and cast, but Thor has the better fight scenes and score. Villains are equally shit (although in the comics I prefer Ronan...which makes his movie treatment all the more disappointing, I suppose) so it all comes down to my mood. Today I was in the mood to watch an armored Chris Hemsworth beat shit up with a magic hammer. Hell yes.

Equestria Girls: Friendship Games.... That film proved the saying "Third time's the charm" is a lie

Aisu September 29th, 2015 1:57 AM

The last movie I saw was Rise Of The Guardians, which was a re-watch; the newest movie I've seen is Get Hard.

Van Helsing

...I can't believe I sat through all 2 hours of this. What utter trash. Why is it that monster movies these days seem to follow the belief that you can make up for substandard writing by just chucking as many different monsters as you can get into the pot? Dracula, werewolves, Jekyll & Hyde, Frankenstein's monster, Kate Beckinsdale, Dracula's slutty vampire harem, some weird little exploding gargoyle things that are apparently their mutant kids...bloody HELL, it's a menagerie of a movie, and not one of them is well done. I got very strong Underworld vibes from the final battle (only significantly less violent and entertaining) and...I have nothing positive to say about this film. Nothing. It wasn't even trashy fun; it was just plain trashy. Never again. NEVER. I can't believe I recorded this. "It'll be fun; it's got Hugh Jackman in it." I think to myself. Sometimes my idiocy astounds me. Lord. WHY.

Lexatom September 29th, 2015 1:09 PM

The last movie I watched was the Smosh movie on Netflix. It was pretty good. Some people say it's stupid, but you gotta understand that it's supposed to be stupid, it's Smosh. It even states it directly in the movie.

The Rite. Classic Anthony Hopkins.

X-Files: I Want To Believe

I saw it before, but I was going through an X-Files rewatch and decided to watch it again. It's not a bad movie, but certainly nothing you'd want to watch if you weren't a fan of the series and even then it's kinda of like a good (but not great) episode that's two hours long.

Riddick

Father wanted to watch it again, and as per normal I'm the convenient excuse: if I want to watch something too, then it can be justified to whoever else happens to be around at the time. It's a 2-to-1 rule we seem to have in this house that comes into play every time someone asides me wants to watch something...and in my case I get overruled when people want to watch Pointless.

Anyways. I quite like this film, although I like it more as a setup movie than I do as a standalone...it's Pitch Black all over again, only not quite as entertaining this go around. Sure, Vin Diesel is a fantastic actor who really lends presence to the role, and I loved the whole "head in a box" thing that was going on for half the film, but...well, after Chronicles this isn't a very good follow-up. I want to see more Necromongers! Fortunately, the end of the film promises retribution and, with a fourth all-but confirmed by the DVD sales of this one, I can't wait to see where it's all going to go from here. Good film. Not as good as Pitch Black or Chronicles, but still good. Keep 'em coming.

VisualJae October 10th, 2015 11:52 AM

The Wind Rises by Hayao Miyazaki.

I've seen it before, but I wanted to go back and really pay attention to the movie as a movie.

And my original opinion of it still stands. It's one of his weaker films, unfortunately.

Mad Max - Fury Road

It was fair. The atmosphere and designs were great, but Road Warrior is still better.

Alexander The Director's Cut

There are like four versions of Alexander and I wish that wasn't the case because one of my favorite military leaders from history deserves better than a sloppy caricature from Oliver Stone </3

Captain Gizmo October 12th, 2015 10:51 AM

Insidious

The atmosphere of the movie is great and scenes are pretty bone chilling. I'd say it's one of the best horror movies made in the 2010's until now.

a small amount of people complained about the dream sequence but I think they failed to realize that this is a ghost/demon horror movie. It's supposed to be paranormal.

maccrash October 12th, 2015 11:57 AM

Buffalo '66.

going into this I knew I was either gonna love it or hate it. a film about this dude who gets out of jail and immediately kidnaps a teenaged girl, pretending they're married for his parents, laden with faded colors and diner scenes and tap-dancing to King Crimson. additionally incredibly self-absorbed. there would be no in between on this. thankfully I fell into the former camp, loving it with all of my ****ing heart. Vincent Gallo is a terrible, terrible actor (and person in general) but for some reason he pulls off some sort of cathartic, earnest need to make this film. it's obviously hearkening back to films from the '50s in a way but it's also a portrait of a lonely, broken, self-conscious man who portends to Know It All but really has not a clue. recommended if you're into unconventional things.

VanillaMiltank October 13th, 2015 11:46 AM

X-Men: Days of Future Past

We're in full-scale rewatch mode at the moment...thankfully we skipped all the other X-Men movies asides First Class. Whilst this isn't a brilliant film, and I am dreading Apocalypse after seeing the titular character looks like a fat version of Ivan Ooze, it's a lot better than the awful trilogy and Wolverine spinoffs. Fassbender and McAvoy are by no means as good as McKellan and Stewart, but they seem to have grown into the roles a little since First Class, and they're...adequate. The plot isn't too badly mutilated, and the special effects are nice enough. One of these days I'm going to have to watch the Rogue cut, out of curiosity. Also, major props to this movie for erasing what happened in the trilogy. If only I could forget The Last Stand happened too...

antemortem October 16th, 2015 3:47 AM

I saw The Visit a couple of weeks ago, which was hugely disappointing. I was expecting some sort of psychological thriller, if not outright horror, but it was nothing more than spoof horror without the humor that normally makes them. I didn't find any of it funny or creepy - however, I will hand it to the twist about the grandparents. The mother's reaction was the best 10 seconds or so of the movie and I wish that whole bit had been played up more, as the Paranormal Activity-esque ending was a bit of a relief thematically but it fell flat given the rest of the film.

Esper October 16th, 2015 8:43 AM

Aladdin. Hadn't seen it since I was a kid. Robin Williams is really the thing that makes the movie worth watching.

I just back from seeing Goosebumps. This movie is based on the books by R.L. Stine. It it was quite good.

Aisu October 18th, 2015 6:05 PM

I re-watched How To Train Your Dragon and Hercules, but the most recent movie I've seen is Rio 2, mainly for Bruno Mars; on a more realistic note, I've watched Dope.

Enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. Well acted, decent premise, but not particularly scary. Somewhat soured by the very end, however.

The Barber.

My boyfriend and I have been looking for horror or thriller movies to watch on Netflix. I came across this one, which didn't have a bad description, so we gave it a shot. It was actually pretty alright for an lesser known thriller on Netflix, haha. Definitely worth a watch. Nothing too special, but not bad at all.

ElCabron October 25th, 2015 12:46 PM

Inside Out! That movie is amazing!

pkmin3033 October 25th, 2015 1:49 PM

Jurassic World.

I have mixed feelings about the first two Jurassic Park movies (the third one was ****) as they were films of my childhood...so, they were awesome, because they had dinosaurs in them, but they were terrifying, because those dinosaurs were devouring people. I still get an uncomfortable feeling when I watch them, as I remember how scared I used to be. I mean, I was only about four or five when I saw the first one, after all.

But I...didn't really get that with this movie. It didn't FEEL like a Jurassic Park movie; it was just a random film with dinosaurs in it. Sure, it was a pretty good one, and I was very grateful they didn't spend much time on those bratty little kids and actually gave me what I wanted - dinosaurs running rampant - but it felt like it had been...censored, perhaps? That element of suspense bordering on horror was completely gone, it wasn't quite as graphic as the past films were, and a lot of the excitement was gone...in fact, the movie summed itself up perfectly right at the start when they were talking about the park: people have gotten so used to dinosaurs that they need to keep on bringing in new attractions to keep people interested. Whilst the park in the movie might have managed to do that, this movie did not. It felt more like a rehashed reimagining than a true sequel.

Well-paced, nice special effects, passable acting...but lacking. Not what I was hoping for. But still a million times better than the godawful third film.

Livewire October 26th, 2015 10:59 AM

Crimson Peak

I really did like it, the use of color and the atmospherics were great, but kinda called the fact that Chastain/Hiddleston's characters were married and running a scheme early on and it kinda killed the mood a bit for me, but I loved the production value, set design and Hiddleston's acting and I thought that the ghosts themselves were actually pretty:

Nihilego October 28th, 2015 9:35 AM

Paths of Glory.

Spoiler:
I've been really into war movies lately, and I thought this one was excellent. It did a great job of portraying the cold, hard side (as if there's a warm and soft side, haha) of war. At times it was extremely emotional and thought-provoking and I feel like it hit a lot of what most of the modern gun-fuelled blood-guzzling battlefield porn films miss; I don't want to watch something glorifying mass murder, be it for the "allies" or the enemies. Indeed, Paths of Glory somehow managed to achieve this despite war being only slightly the major focus - the legal and moral dilemma explored in the second half of the film was easily as thought-provoking as the rest of it. All while making it only too obvious how disgusting and corrupt the whole idea behind war is. Brilliant watch.

...typical Kubrick, though, who as per decided to wrap it all up prematurely with an abrupt and out-of-place ending. 2001: A Space Odyssey being the (somewhat) exception, of course.

G0!d October 29th, 2015 1:17 AM

Attack on Titan

I was disappointed. It kinda deviates from the original source (which I assume is the manga) and didn't focused on the more important parts of the plot such as their days in the academy, the other members of the 104th squad, the officials of each legion, etc. For those people who will be watching the movie and had no idea of what Attack on Titan's original plot is, they will be mislead by the movie.

I haven't read much of the reviews of the movies, so I can't really say if what I observed is reliable. But for my own opinion, the movie didn't live up to its name.

Macbeth

This was honestly one of the best films of the year, and one of the best of Michael Fassbender's filmography. It stays true to the source material, is beautifully shot and well cast - Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard are just powerhouses in their roles, and I thank Justin Kurzel for directing this.

tl;dr I'd recommend this to everyone.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

It's movies like this that make me hate the fact that I know anything at all about Marvel outside of the films. Ignorance really is bliss when you're watching crap like this. This is easily one of the worst Marvel films out there - worse than Amazing Spider-man, worse than X-Men Origins: Wolverine, worse even than Elektra. I can't believe I sat through this again. I don't even know why we have the DVD. This is an abomination. Yet it's still better than the FF reboot...somehow. I don't even want to think about it. I want those 90 minutes of my life back.

...and yet I still think Chris Evans does a better job as the Human Torch in this than he does as Captain America in the MCU. I just don't like him in the role.

Star Wars Episode 3.

It was okay. I had actually never seen any of the Star Wars franchise up until a couple weeks ago when I decided I'd see what all the fuss was about. I enjoyed the original trilogy, though I think I would've had to have grown up with it to really be able to get into it. I honestly fully expected episodes 1-3 to be superior, since I figured all the stuff I'd heard about them being crap was just a bunch of nostalgia-induced nonsense from super-fans, but it turns out people are right: The original trilogy is so much better.

Episode 3 was the best of the three, but that's not saying much. Everything still felt awkward and stiff and unnatural. That being said, the scene near the end between Anakin and Obi-Wan right after Obi-Wan dismembers Anakin is easily the best scene in the entire series.

Spectre

I loved this movie. I liked the throwbacks to the more campy, quasi-satirical Bond films of the past but i felt that it did drag the movie down some, tone wise. If it had been purely a "Craig-era" bond movie, more skyfall/casino royale-esque I think it would have been the best bond ever made. That being said, there were plenty of parts, such as the Day of the Dead opening in Mexico City and the scenes in Tangiers that just left me in awe. And the music from Thomas Newman (the opening Mexico city scene theme especially) was awesome. And, as usual, Christoph Waltz was ****ing amazing and made for one of the better Bond villains I think. So all in all, maybe not quite the level of Skyfall, but still an amazing bond movie.

my favorite Ghibli film personally! but I still have a fair few that I've yet to see. but yeah Whisper of the Heart ticks all the boxes for me -- aesthetically beautiful, romantic, a palpable sense of longing, plus all the writer's block **** that's depicted in the latter half really gets to me. and the ending is the sweetest most awkward thing of all time which I also have a huge soft spot for. what a film. Riki Oh: The Story of Ricky (1991)

Oh Riki Oh. I've always had this cult classic under my radar for some time but I've never had the opportunity to watch it until fate called for it. Watching too much Monster Musume (and having some fun sessions in my "station") made me feel that I was losing some EDGE and I definitely needed some. Ok back to the plot.

Riki Oh or The Story of Ricky. Supposedly a movie adaptation of the manga, however this one is noticeably different from the source material aside from a few bits and pieces. What makes this movie amazing for me is that it was produced at a really low budget, yet somehow it manages to tell a really good story, with some good albeit really basic 90's cinematography with the very limited budget that it had. Consider Riki Oh's rather small budget, the movie manages to portray a fictional yet rather unsettling prison setting (minus prison rape which thank god the movie does not have), along with some insanely over the top violence that is highly justified to have. Remember, this is Riki Oh. Those who have somehow read the manga should know how over the top Riki Oh is.

Because of the movie's limited budget, there are some rather noticeable flaws that obviously came with it, such as the small cast of characters, extras or background actors that didn't do anything to feel involved, and a hilariously bad english dub which should be heard in order to believe. To be fair, this film's low budget english dub is still 10000x better than some other English dubs of Asian movies with a higher budget.

To sum it up. Great Martial Arts action, check. Over the top blood and gore, check. Produced at a low budget yet everything was used effectively, check check and tons of check. I highly recommend this movie for those looking for some EDGE, especially since were in Pokecommunity ;)

Off note: About to Watch Cannibal Holocaust. Yes I definitely love myself so much.

Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2

Some scenes dragged on too long, but the action is great and also the end of the movie was pretty good too, even tho it dragged on a little too much. If part 1 and part 2 was made into a 3 hours movie, it would've felt better rather than splitting them into two and having the 1st part full of plot development and the 2nd part drag on too long because a one hour movie to end the franchise wouldn't give it justice at all.

Besides that, a great movie and a good way to end the serie :)

Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones

So, I'm watching a couple of Star Wars films a week, to refresh my memory in time for Episode VII. Ugh, this film. People generally say that Episode I is the worst one, but it's nowhere near as awful as this one. It's a badly written love story between a fantastic actor (Portman) and one of the worst I have ever seen (Christensen) and it just drags on...and on...and ON. Christopher Lee's Dooku is the only real highlight to this film, and much as I admire the man, I have to say I preferred Maul in Episode I...he just looked the part so much more. Attack of the Clones has some good fight scenes, but that's all it's got, and by the time they roll around you're either close to death, half asleep, or trying to remember exactly why you're doing this again and why you didn't just skip to the good parts. It'd save a good hour and a half if you did. I want my hour and a half back. This film has not aged gracefully.

I am so glad this one is behind me. Now I just have to endure Episode III and I'll be free to actually enjoy myself with it. As horrible a director as Abrahms is - and make no mistake, he RUINED Star Trek - I don't think he could possibly screw Episode VII up any more than the prequels. It's just...not possible. That would go beyond the realm of human stupidity and incompetence and enter Gurren Lagann-levels of kicking reason to the curb. It's NOT possible. At least, it had better not be...

Porco Rosso. A film produced by Studio Ghibli in 1992. The plot revolves around an Italian World War I ex-fighter ace, now living as a freelance bounty hunter chasing "air pirates" in the Adriatic Sea. However, an unusual curse has transformed him into an anthropomorphic pig. Once called Marco Pagot (Marco Rossolini in the American version), he is now known to the world as "Porco Rosso", Italian for "Red Pig".

The story is absolutely great and the characters as well. It really reflects the life at early 20th Century in Italy. The planes designs are historically correct. The songs are playing an important role as well in this film.

I would rate this as 8.5/10

I went on a Vincent Price binge and watched the original "The Last Man on Earth" and the original "House On Haunted Hill" last night. They're older horror movies, both filmed in the early to mid 1960s but that doesn't take away the suspense and twists of those two films.

I sincerely hope that I'm not the only one on this forum who's familiar with Vincent Price. Everyone I know has no idea who he is. {XD}

Hitman: Agent 47 - The plot is good although it's a bit cliche. I'm kinda disappointed with the portrayal of Agent 47 because it lacks stealth and espionage in which he specialize in-game. The movie is bursting with hand-to-hand fighting, gun-shooting actions and explosions with little to no disguise and stealth kills.

Dragon Blade

Another display of amazing art, and sheer audacity. Dragon Blade lives up to the expectations originating from one's heart. The actors did a great job taking the bargain and bidding farewell to evil. The genocide of evil, and the moto that "Truth prevails" is transpired the film.

Jackie Chan, without a doubt, made a breakthrough performance. I cannot picture myself imagining a 61 year old man fighting like Bruce Lee, but my, my! that's who Jackie Chan is.

Dragon Blade is a Chinese film made collided with Hollywood industry. The story focuses on the construction of a city made together with the Roman warriors and Chinese prisoners. The story takes twists and turns and leaves a heavy emotional impact in the audience. Much to the antagonist's demise, we see the sheer audacity of true warriors who doesn't feel any regret to die for their own man. I won't be spoiling the plot now so don't worry ;D

But, the film is a must watch. Even though so, I'd say taste differs based on the tongue.

Double Whammy!

Cannibal Holocaust - yep, after seeing it, I finally got to knew why this one was talked about when it comes to the whole shock factor.

Dredd 3d (Karl Urban):
This rework of the Judge Dredd movie is without a doubt, a great improvement over the Sylvester Stallone version. The action sequences had that "The Raid" style and Karl Urban's performance as the titular character Dredd was spot on. There's a reason why I really like Karl Urban as a lead actor since he's able to carry leading roles when he has to.

The Peanuts Movie.

What a great film to enjoy on Christmas~ Oh, the nostalgia. I definitely give it a 4.5 out of 5! :D

Flowerchild December 26th, 2015 12:32 AM

I got the full set of Indiana Jones movies for Christmas so I watched #1 for the first time since I was a little kid.
I absolutely love that movie, and would give it a 5/5 rather than a 4.999999.../5 if every punch didn't use the exact same sound effect.

yes I know 4.999.../5 = 5/5. it's an exaggeration. if PokéCommunity has mathematicians, they can rest easy.

Interstellar was on HBO just a day ago. It was a good thing i started the whole film from intro up to the end. I remember seeing this with my girl, and my other female friends at the theaters when it came out. It was worth going home late that night.

Red Dragon, I have a habit of rewatching that since its one of my favourites XD
But Ralph Fiennes as Francis Dollarhyde is just perfection. I loved Richard Armitage in the TV series, but for me he didnt really portray the damages psyche of Dollarhyde well, he had the insanity down well, but he seemed more stable emotionally than Fiennes, idk maybe thats just me but I personally felt Fiennes did a better job with the character.
Although Armitage terrified me like Fiennes never could...and his voice as The Dragon was amazing, for me Fiennes got the main aspect of the character down well: That he's insane, but his insanity is borne from years of abuse rather than just being there like Hannibal.

Bruce Almighty

One of Jim Carrey's better films, in my opinion. By no means the best, but the slapstick moments in this never fail to make me giggle a little. The plot isn't brilliant, but that's mostly because the film doesn't really need it - Jim Carrey with godly powers is the sort of thing that should justify itself, really. Shame about Evan Almighty...
