Need help adding tiles.

Hi,

I'm trying to add a bunch of tiles to my tileset in AM. http://i.imgur.com/asFEWXZ.png
However, (I am following Le Pug's tutorial) I was getting errors earlier. Do I have to add those things tile by tile, or do I have to (as you can see in the image I already did that with the first few tiles) place them all next to each other? Like do I make all the 16x16 parts touch each other, and I can then add them all at once into the tileset of AM, or do I have to do it tile by tile (which will take FOREVER!)?

Please help me, I'm desperate in getting this to work....

Kind regards,
BremFM.

First off, Tiles are in 8 by 8 sections and they need to be touching each other and aligned with the top left corner. 16 by 16 works, there's just more wasted space from duplicated tiles. You will have to make them into blocks in the block editor of A-Map. Also, you need to have your tiles indexed and reduced to 16 colours if you haven't already. Finally you need to copy/paste the tiles into the .dib file that A-map exports. You can export a tileset through the Block Editor. Then just click "Picture>Save Tileset (1 or 2)"

Don't index eeverything at the same time, you lose colors like that. There's 6 primary tileset colors you have to work with. I suggest splitting them like the default tiles are, and inserting one at a time to get full advantage of the pals available. You can group all the things which use the same pals though, that's fine.

Ok so;
Reduce color (did that)
Select all the tiles and make them touch each other
Export .dib with palette 7 from a-map
Paste my files into it
Import

However, I think this image is too big thus not fitting in the .dib file. How do I fix that?

If it's too wide or tall, you can try moving some tiles into empty spaces but if you fill it all up and there are no gaps left, you will have to get rid of the duplicated tiles and work with 8 by 8 tiles instead, which give you more room to work. For example, you can get rid of all but one copy of each corner path because you can mirror and flip it in the Block Editor and have 4 blocks for the space of 1.

I did not make these tiles, they're from the internet. How do I make them 8 by 8?

You select 8 by 8 sections when you copy/paste instead of 16 by 16.

But then I only have 1/4th of the tile? Or do I shrink them?

Got a link to a tutorial for this? Sorry for asking these questions, I just really don't understand all this tile nonsense. Why did they make it this complicated in the first place?

No, you don't shrink them. That 1/4 of a tile is very powerful. As I mentioned earlier, the Block Editor can mirror tiles, both horizontally and vertically. You can compress your path surround in grass tiles into 4 tiles: the corner, the top edge, the side edge, and the path. Suddenly 9 16 by 16 tiles became 1 16 by 16, that can be made into any of the other tiles.
Take a closer look, you can see other duplicates in the tiles that can be removed.

Okay, finally something I understand.

However, when I tried to insert the trees, when I clicked "Load tileset2" it came up with random weird ****, something like "Search for byte", and I couldnt proceed. I guess I'll just start by inserting some houses, then...

Unfortunately, I have never come across that error and I am not at my computer right now to attempt to recreate it.
Good luck with the rest of your tiles though. I'm glad I was able to help.

Here's the thing I'm getting, not exactly an error but I have no idea what it is.

If I remeber correctly, emerald let's you save more tilesets to the ROM.
The dialog box is asking for an offset to save this tileset to.
But someone who hacks Emerald would give you a better answer (I hack Firered).

I started yesterday with hacking so I have no clue what offset to use. I do know I can like find a free offset with Free Space Finder..?

Use FSF (Free space Finder) to find an empty offset to use.

Also, if you want a tool pack then shoot me a PM or VM or heck, add me on skype.

Where do I full in that offset? Sorry for bothering you guys so much with my dumb questions, I just really want to learn rom hacking.

Take the offset that FSF gave you, bring up the dialog box you took a picture of earlier, click "Specify" and type the offset into the box under it.
I'm happy to see your enthusiasm to learn ROM hacking, your questions don't bother me.

BremFM October 28th, 2015 12:05 PM

on the a-map, it says I need 2724 bytes, however, in FSF, I can't remove the value of how many bytes you need (64 by default). I'm trying to use the built-in free space feature inside A-map now.

Okay, I screwed up... http://i.imgur.com/RdSxsOV.png

I used the following thing;

The colour of the sand and water are not in the palette, so the ROM defaults to making it the last colour in your palette. Try a different palette, this one doesn't have any of the colours you need or if you're replacing this palette, run the image through Advance Tile Helper or another program that can change your palette into a format that the ROM can read.
I use "The Ultimate Palette Converter".

I did that... I 'll use the one you linked then, hoping it works.

BremFM October 28th, 2015 1:05 PM

Ok so, from wherepart do I start over?

BremFM October 28th, 2015 1:20 PM

It really doesn't work goddamnit, I've used TileHelper, IMO that ultimate pallette converter is really useless cause it doesn't do anything else than the thing tilehelper does... What do I do? Who invented this super user-unfriendly hard tile-adding system anyways?

Syrex October 28th, 2015 1:32 PM

That's how the the tile system has ever worked pretty much when A-Map & Elite Map came out.

It's rough, I know. You'll get it thought!
