U.S. Hoopa Event - McDonalds? Sounds like a lot of Hoopa!
"For those of you in the US, the Hoopa event has been announced. Hoopa is to be distributed at McDonald's restaurants across the country from November 27th 2015 to December 23rd 2015. This event can be redeemed on X, Y, Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire but it is not currently 100% confirmed if it will be code or through the Nintendo Zone or local distribution methods."

Definitely an odd venue for a Pokemon distribution event, but hey, whatever works ^^ I'll certainly be grabbing one of these as soon as the event starts! Or three perhaps haha
|
Note that a small edit on the Serebii homepage states that it's been removed from the US Pokemon website, so they might have some changes planned for the distribution:

Luckly I live almost next door to a McDonalds.
As everyone has said, Very strange place for a Pokemon Event. |
I don't even think this is the first event at Mcdonalds. Looking at the date of the event I think they put it up on the site sooner than planned, hence why it was likely removed.
|
I know McDonalds has a history of promotions like this, but why not another venue to generate buzz for them? Hell MecDonalds turned down a temporary alliance with Burger King out of...what? Spite? Jealousy? Revenue?
|

Besides, this isn't the first Pokemon event happening at McDonald's. There was that Happy Meal toy set for B/W that came with promo cards. Maybe the Pokemon Company just wants to stick with whom they've used before. |

I really hope that someday these events are purely online and worldwide like they should be in the 21st century. |
Adding on against Nintendo's policy, that might be the reason why GameStop isn't hosting much Pokemon event lately. Yeah I get it, they might have paid to sponsor the events in the west and they need income too, but that's not how a company should earn money; a great service and honest business conduct brings customers.
Therefore, hosting in McDonald's isn't a terrible idea, on the business perspective. As for the food, that's an another topic. {XD} |
I am having doubts about McDonalds hosting the event. I will have to go to a McDonalds location for proof. After I have my proof, I hope the event will be code based. This is because I go to McDonalds for lunch on certain Wednesdays on my way home from work, so I don't have my 3DS with me.
|
I have heard of Pokemon events being distributed at McDonald's in the past, but as we know it's not entirely out-of-character to have Pokemon events distributed at areas outside of Gamestop/EB Games/GAME etc.
|
Looks like it's been reconfirmed, and it will be through Nintendo Zone at McDonalds. From Serebii.net:
In The Games Department Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire - US Hoopa Following the accidental reveal on the official site yesterday, the Hoopa event has been reconfirmed for the US. Running at McDonald's restaurants from November 27th to December 23rd, it is now confirmed that Hoopa is distributed through the McDonald's Nintendo Zone meaning you'll need to take your 3DS and a copy of Pokémon X, Y, Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire with you. |
Quote:
I mean, yeah McDonald's exists in many countries but a fast food place sounds a little weird for a video game event to me.... |
OP beat me to the reference.
I fear that I may be forced to buy food from McDonald's if I ever want to get Hoopa, but the problem is, their food isn't exactly on top quality these days. |
Has it ever been top quality?
Nintendo Zone huh? I guess I'll just drive up to one and try to get it from the parking spot (it's worked before). |
So, Hoopa is going to be available at McDonalds. It has the move "Nasty Plot", and can be received at a place that serves nasty "food".
|
Whoo, I'll definitely be getting a Hoopa. I have a Manesh Hoopa already but another one or two wouldn't hurt :-]
I have to agree that the fact that Hoopa's being distributed at McDonald's IS pretty weird but I'm not going to complain about it. When I went to GameStop for the Diancie event in October last year I was forced to pre-order OR/AS, so at least if the event will be distributed at McDonald's, I'll be there for some food anyway. |
Well I wouldn't complain if they did that here in Sweden :D Weird place but yet awesome! Now I gotta find a contact in U.S for one hehe.
|
Quote:
At least now that we know that it's distributed through a Wi-Fi service, we can be sure they can't pull any shenanigans where we're forced to buy some of their food (?) to get the event. |
If i were forced to buy something to get the event pokemon, I'd buy like a 59 cent ice cream cone and reap the rewards that is HOOPA!
|
McDonald's offers free wi-fi for anyone to use. While I'm sure that they'd appreciate people buying their products, they should also be used to people coming in and using their wi-fi. Especially when it's only being used by someone for a few seconds to download a Pokemon.
You can even go in and just ask to buy the toys that come in the Happy Meals without actually purchasing food. That way, you can claim you're making a purchase to have an excuse to use their wi-fi but you're not actually buying their food. |
Quote:
|
Didn't they host some distribution event like this at McDonald's years ago?
|
^
I'm not sure in the states, I think they did? But I could be wrong. While I'm sure such events aren't rare from McDonald's in Japan, Pokemon players over here often brag them (over the net) that's why I'm sure of it. XD |
If I had any doubts about the start date, I did not before, but I do now. I am not sure it is a good idea having the event start on Black Friday. This is due to how busy that day is, so there would probably be a lot of people attempting to get Hoopa that day.

Speaking from experience here, since my mother is currently working as a third-shift manager at a McDonalds near my home, I can attest that they typically don't mind people just coming in and using the free wi-fi, and they don't force you to buy anything. Nobody at the McDonalds knows who I am, let alone my mother's relation to me, and they don't bat an eyelash at people just sitting at a table in the lobby and getting on their wifi for whatever reason, be it netflix watching or the vidya gaems, so long as you're no disturbance to the other patrons.
And it's not like McDonalds food is -entirely- terrible. A plain hamburger is a dollar, nothing but bun and patty. It's thirty cents more to add cheese for a cheeseburger. Two bacon-egg-and-cheese biscuits, thanks to McDonalds' recent decision to start selling breakfast all day, are $3.33. Hell, just buy a dollar sweet tea or an ice-cream cone off the dollar menu, or like Astinus noted, you can buy the Happy Meal toys, if you really need to justify a visit to McDonalds. |
You think only McDonald's in Japan would do this.
|
They've had events at McDonald's before. Long ago. I remember trying to get one in the parking lot once so I wouldn't have to go in lmao.
I can't wait to get Hoopa. I've always wanted him. Although I wish they gave him on Halloween since he is ghost :3 |

I have skimmed through and read it was going to be released and then serebii updated and it was wrong, I was reading on pokemon.com and it says still that it will be released on the 27th, which is correct? Serebii or pokemon.com?

I don't even like McDonalds, prefer other better hamburger places.
I will go on my birthday to grab 2 Hoopa for my Pokedex. As long as I'm there, I'll probably just grab a diet coke. Since my birthday will be on Dec 13, so halfway through the event. |

Pretty excited for this. This must mean we get the Hoopa movie this month.

McDonalds may not be the best place to host it, I agree. But you know corporate, they'll do it for the money. I hear it's to promote the new ΩRαS toys. And as usual, cheap and plastic. I'd rather somewhere like Shake Shack. :| Also so many new yorkers :) |
Again, it's difficult to think of any other restaurant for the Pokemon Company to run this promotion at. Like with the Shake Shack, as Tkain suggested, the closest one to me is an hour away. Compare that to my closest McDonald's, which I can pop into after a short walk. I'm sure it's like that for other people all over the country. "Better" restaurants or more appropriate stores like GameStop aren't as common as McDonald's.
Even other fast food restaurants aren't as plentiful as McD's. Nor are any other fast food restaurants' kids meals as popular as a Happy Meal, and since TPC wants the best advertising, go with the most-known restaurant for the most exposure. Still, as YellowTemperance and I have said, you don't need to give McD's a single penny of your money to download Hoopa. Just pop in, connect to the Mystery Gift, get Hoopa, and then leave. I'm just happy my birthday falls in the middle of the promotion. I'll get myself the Lugia toy, a Hoopa, and a Fillet O' Fish. http://i.somethingawful.com/forumsystem/emoticons/emot-toot.gif |
Astinus has a logical explanation on why McDonald's was the best place to host this event. As we know, McDonald's has a huge business and is pretty much the giant of the fast food industry, plus we know that kids often come for Happy Meals and there have been several times Pokemon toys have been in the Happy Meals (although where I am, Happy Meals tend to have separate sets of toys, one for males and one for females, and Pokemon tends to be the male toys) and to have an event Pokemon distributed at the wi-fi spots in the restaurant, it would serve as a new incentive for kids to want to come.
And as Yellow said, you don't have to get any food if you want the Hoopa. Just connect to the wi-fi and download it, simple as that. |
I'm in the States, so I'm pretty happy that I'll finally be able to get one. But in all honesty, it does suck that other countries won't get the opportunity. Only a relatively small amount are going to take advantage of this event, compared to Japan and maybe even other countries. I only say that because very, very few people near my location even play Pokemon, let alone go to an event for it. That could be a very different story in other parts of the U.S, though.
|
Question about this event coming out at McDonald's, will there be any pokemon toys coming out in the kid's meal there as well with this event release? I have been in my local one many times asking about this and not even the managers know about this for the 27th.

I have never done never done an event like this at a public place before. So do I go up to the counter and ask for the code, or do I connect to wifi from there?

Awesome, I'm going to have to take my brother so we can get our Hoopas! To be entirely honest, I have never gotten an event Pokemon that required me to leave my home. But I'm finally going to get one, cause I don't have a Hoopa yet. Also, excuse to get french fries.
|
I have only been to GS to get events outside of my house, but for me that will be alot of trips there to get all of those toys coming out with this event
|
This would be my first event pokemon so i am especially excited for this :)
|
I remember having to go to Game Stop every time there was an event for the Gen 4 games. It was both cool and annoying. But, why Mcdonald's? XD
|
Is it possible to get a Hoopa in both X and Y or ORAS, or only one game? I am also worried it might not be every MC Dondlads, in Richmond VA where I live anime is not a big thing.
|
Quote:
|
Is it US only? So close yet so far from me.
|
Oh wow! An event I can actually receive without driving for an hour! This just made my day ^^ and made my tummy growl..
|
Seeing as this event will be rarer than easily farmed Gamestop events, it will be of worth for me and other redditors from /r/PokemonTrades such as my self. This means that the McHoopa will most likely be worth more than the GAME and perhaps worth more than the Maxsoft Hoopa. I see this as a better way to distribute it.
Also, McNuggets. |
They're hosting it in McDonalds because this is where the vast majority of Nintendo Zones are, I'd wager.
Quote:
Go there with two games, pick up one on Mystery Gift, trade it over, restart game, rinse and repeat. |

This isn't a distribution by code, though. You simply download it via wireless download. :p
|
I live in south america, so no hoopa for me :/, I wish they gave a code or something for my country :P
|
It will most likely be possible to download Hoopa at home by spoofing your network as being a McDonald's Nintendo Zone hotspot, by giving it a certain SSID ([email protected]) and spoofing your router's mac address (Unsure which mac addresses would be used for this yet.)
It's been done before for various other events, even more recently, for the Pokémon Center shiny Tyranitar in Japan without having to live anywhere near Japan (still need a Japanese 3DS and game, though.) |
Quote:
|
To be honest I'm not entirely sure how to do this with a router, I've only ever done it with my wireless card in my PC.
It's the same concept as HomePass. You set up a wireless access point with the same name as the official Nintendo Zone access points, and use mac spoofing programs to spoof your mac address. Your 3DS will be tricked into thinking they are connected to a Nintendo Zone. You can trick your 3DS into thinking it connected to a Nintendo Zone simply by changing your AP's name to attwifi or [email protected], but in order to be able to download Hoopa you'd probably have to have a certain mac address so your 3DS thinks it's connected to a McDonalds access point, and not just any Nintendo Zone. This page has a list of mac addresses for various Nintendo Zone access points, so it should be possible to spoof your router or your wireless card as having that mac address, then use the right SSID, and start up your router or wireless access point to download Hoopa as if you were at McDonalds |
Quote:
ok, thanks a lot ^^, I don't know a lot about this stuff, but I'll try to do it xD, thanks for the info, didn't know that could be done |
I can't wait!
|
Serebii has mentioned that this Hoopa event is now active, so if you're in the US visit McDonald's and pick up yours now!
And this may be a bit off-topic, but there's now been another Hoopa event announced for the Scandinavia region. Players in Norway, Finland and Sweden can obtain a serial code from Gamestop stores which they can use to download Hoopa onto their Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire games. This one will be active from December 2015 - January 2016. (Credit goes to Serebii for this) |
Can't access this event here in the Philippines so I won't get it unless there's an event distribution or someone would trade it to me which is near impossible. Hope a serial code comes out soon. :(
|

Btw, this event starts today! Anybody planning on going out to McDonald's today to grab your Hoopa? :) |
any way for me to access this in the uk?
|

You can get more than one too, one for each game you have, so I got two Hoopas, and both have three perfect IVs as well, one of them has all it's IVs over 26 too |
does anyone know if the hoopa is nature locked, if it can be fixed with synchronize, or if my ralts is just defective?
|
I went to McDonalds and only got one for the 6 games I have, their net was running slow or some thing and I did get to get 2 of the toys, got a kyogre and lugia.
|
Quote:
I'm pretty sure this event would be region-locked, so even if you were to connect to a Nintendo Zone in a McDonalds from USA, with an european 3DS and game, you probably wouldn't be able to download it. :/ In the event that it actually isn't region-locked, then you -should- be able to spoof your network card's mac address and broadcast an access point using a certain SSID to trick your 3DS into thinking you connected to a Nintendo Zone in a McDonalds in the USA which should let you download it. But if it is region-locked, that wouldn't help much. By the way, I don't know if that would be allowed here, but if it is, given that I have access to editing my save file, I could get the Wondercard and pick up a few to give away to some of you who can't get it. All I ask is that you keep it for your personal collection only, unless you let the other person know where it came from and they are okay with it. |
Yeah I got 5 of them today, so it's pretty cool.
If you can't/don't want to go to McDonalds for whatever reason, this will work for people in the U.S. and Canada to get the Hoopa from home. |
Got mine, and made sure to snag the unused Wondercard from my Alpha Sapphire save just in case I want more. Wasn't too hard, and I didn't even leave my house to do it; the trick Fun Size linked works well... ;)
|
Thanks for the info. I'll make sure to get my Hoops. However, I doubt the McDonalds near me will have this. They aren't the best McDonalds in my area if you catch my drift.
|
Quote:
Can also confirm it does :3 Spoiler:
(Don't try Connectify, it won't work; at least I don't think so. I had to use my phone's wireless tethering. Link says it has to be an access point with no security and Connectify only supports WPA2.) |
Quote:
|
Quote:
If you can change the settings on your wireless router and set the name to "McDonalds Free WiFi" with no password, you can download the Hoopa from the comfort of your own home. Or if you have the ability to create your own wireless AP, from your phone or whatever, you can do that too. Or if you can't do any of it, I can do it and trade the Hoopa over to you if you want. |
Quote:

Quote:
Actually, I'll try make a network named like that except with WPA2 encryption and I'll see if it works too. Edit: So I just tried, it has to be a network with no encryption, otherwise the game doesn't find a gift on Mystery Gift, even if the network name is changed to "McDonalds Free WiFi" |

I'm a bit confused about this event. I've tried to do a test run of opening up the "Nintendo Zone" program on my 3DS before I make a trip to Mickie D's, and I get an error message that says "This service has been discontinued. Thank you for using this service." I've never connected to their wifi before, and I'm just really confused as to how this works. Do I just need to connect to their wifi like I would at any other hotspot or do I need to use the Nintendo Zone program to do it?
Thanks in advance guys. |

Sucks for me, as I live in Australia. We don't get all these specials half of the time, or when we do, it's like already been a month or two after every other country gets them...
|
Quote:
I also plan to go there frequently for a while to collect all the toys <3 Yesterday I got a Groudon :P http://i.imgur.com/9TzX2b5.png I'm really loving this- going to McDonalds, getting some tasty food while getting free Pokémon and Pokémon toys on the side? This is the life {XD} |
Tried it from the parking lot, but couldn't get good enough connection. Went inside to eat some nuggets then and got two. One with crappy Defense per the Stat Checker, but hey, it's Hoopas # 4 and 5 for me so I'm not picky. If I noticed they had Pokemon toys, I would've gotten one.
|
I got the Hoopa event done when I went to McDonalds for lunch today. I then left my 3DS in sleep mode after doing so.
|
Quote:
Australians seem to be getting shafted lately, because we are the last region that will be getting Super Mystery Dungeon (it's only a day after Europe but still we are last and that sucks) and now being shafted with the Hoopa events. |

And i know this would be more suited for the discussion topic, but I figured I'd use that as an example to get my point across. |
