My first of many adventures in Dark Souls 3:

The Coalition taking a page out of 343's book, and making all Gears 4 DLC free, unless you want to play them in private matches.

On the topic of souls, I'd like to point out how defense works a bit. It seems that DKS3 took a Bloodborne esque approach and gave all armor the same flat defense rating for damage reduction (example: if your total is 250 and you get hit with a 500 damage attack, it's coming in at 250), meaning that if you happen to play through with one less piece of armor, you're gonna take more damage period, no matter if it's like a cloth hat or a Havel's Helmet. It's more fashion, but heavy armors still have uses cause the heavier armor has more Damage Absorption which is percentile based. I believe it falls off to a lower scale after like...25%?

tl;dr

Light armors: Good for general stuff
Heavy armors: Good for dudes that have heavier, harder hitting weapons

Note that obviously if you have good equip load it probably doesn't matter to you, but for those who wanted to have more Glamour in their souls game without risking your defenses, this is as close as you're getting.

Also, Quickstep is amazing. That is all.

My personal bias towards handhelds over consoles has me gravitating towards it naturally. Plus there is the extra content.

Speaking of...god, I want Marin already. I was quite pleased about Medli, but then they went and announced Marin. I have renewed hopes for Yuga and Vaati now <3

I tried the N3DS Demo kiosk, it seems alright, defiantly playable, but not the type of game I would probably play on the 3ds, though hard to tell because playing at a kiosk =/= on your own device. I just want the new stuff on the Wii U version, possibly on Hyrule Warriors 2, Wind Waker is my favorite game and its sad I don't get it. xD

I'm so broken, I got Mario Maker in Physical as a late Christmas gift, though I kinda did want it Digital. Reason is it seems like a game when you get done playing so and so, and see Mario Maker on the homescreen, not change disc. Getting digital also means getting either Super Mario 64 (More likely) or Super Mario Land II on the VC which is a nice bonus. Though the casing is also quite nice, and I'm not sure if getting a digital code (Because its cheaper then the eShop) comes with the physical art book offer. Also with the NX this or next year according to rumors and Mario Maker being ported, it would be nice to be able to sell. I already own WarioWare, Captain Toad, NES Remix, New Super Luigi Bros if I get it, and planning on selling my copy of Tank! Tank! Tank! and if I still want it to rebuy it digitally, even though that just sounds like money down the drain because its not that good. I could just buy the Case/Book/Box separately, then its weird without a disc, I'm so weird. I'm already overflowing with Wii U games space-wise anyways. :/

Is it crazy that, this time last year, I proclaimed "NO MORE DISK-BASED GAMES FOR ME", and then Amazon recently announced you get new titles for $48 with Prime and now I want to go back to getting disk-based games?

Well your saving $12 pretty much, so not crazy at all. Still irks me that digital Games are the same price as physical copies. I get that the dev, R&D, marketing cost still, though I doubt they sell the packaging and distribution for free.

Morkula April 14th, 2016 11:02 PM

I still much prefer physical copies for two reasons:

1. My internet sucks and I can't download modern 40+GB games without it literally taking days.
2. I enjoy having a physical collection of games that I can display, loan out, sell if I want to, etc.

Plus Best Buy GCU/Amazon discounts make it more affordable to go physical than digital. Sure, there are PSN flash sales and the like, but I still prefer to go physical unless it's an absolutely insane deal.

I have pretty much gone all digital on PC though and just download at work where we have FiOS.

pkmin3033 April 15th, 2016 3:13 AM

If digital games weren't tied to a single account on handhelds, I might be a little more forgiving...but having to buy a game a second time if I want to play it on a different account on my Vita/3DS is just annoying.

I also refuse to pay full RRP for a digital game when I wouldn't even pay that much for a physical one, EVER. I'd never pay £50+ for a PS4 game unless it was a special edition, and £40 for a 3DS title is outrageous. Nope. Not happening. Publishers these days are such greedy bastards. I can actually understand RRP being high to a degree, because the store needs to make a profit as well. But you cut the middleman out with digital purchases, and they're the same price and/or higher no matter how old they are? Yeah. No.

JJ Styles April 15th, 2016 5:32 AM

FFIX is sale on Steam then again, i think most people posting here at VG has already played FF9 to death.

And Call of Duty 2 is on at a 50% sale as well. Oh yeah CoD2. "Best" CoD before Dudes 4.

Activision super sale. Hmmm tempting lord Gaben.

I'm wondering how this even qualifies as a remake anymore. Seems a lot closer to a retelling, if anything, but this definitely isn't Final Fantasy VII built from the ground up. I also love some of the quotes, this one being my favorite:

"Whereas with Final Fantasy VII Remake, we already have a preexisting story, so it wouldn't really make sense if that isn't encompassed in a multi-part series..."

It wouldn't make sense, huh? Cool, cool. Hey, remember that one time you made that game and shipped it out, in full, in a single release? You know, the one about ex-soldier who was hired by a group of terrorists in order to save the planet from an energy source that was literally sucking it dry? What was that called again?

Oh, right. FINAL FANTASY VII.

Di-like, did something happen? Was Sakaguchi really the guy that planned every part of the games prior to XIII while the others just watched? Because the things these guys say sometimes absolutely boggles my mind.

You know what they could have said? They could have said that in the original release, so little time was devoted to developing places and characters that they wanted to make entire games focusing on those...discs, I suppose. I wouldn't have any problem with them making 1 game that focuses on- well, pretty much anything from disc 1, especially AVALANCHE.

Now I, personally, have no problem with the episodes being full sized games, especially if each disc is an episode and there's more development and content than the original had- it had a lot of room for improvement and expansion, after all. Of course, a single release'd be ideal, but they've already committed to an episodic release, and thanks to the money they're pushing into FFXV, if that doesn't work out this is the only way that they'll be able to recoup, especially after the statement they made about what would happen if XV fails. FFVII has always been an ace-in-the-hole, and I'm hardly surprised that they'd exploit that. That's business.

My problem is the fact that I have no idea what this multi-episode release entails. They've said literally nothing about what it means for the story, storytelling, how many episodes it'll be, the content, what content'll be available across which games, so on and so forth, so in no way can I call this a good thing. That they're so mum about this creates skepticism among fans about the game- their emergency cash grab that should have guaranteed millions sold. And when they make vague statements about its release process and the gameplay. they do themselves far less favors than should even be possible.

That they're treading dangerously corrosive ground with this is kind of amazing.

EC April 15th, 2016 6:19 AM

EvilChameleon here, bringing you the hottest rumors, such as the first teaser for the next Battlefield game being released today. Possibly.

JJ Styles April 15th, 2016 6:21 AM

I wonder of VN's or Visual Novels are counted as "Video Games" in terms of PC's standards.

If so, well, here's some Tsukihime Remake related stuff that I'll share since its something i grew up with (that includes the accelerated physical puberty)

New Arcueid. Dat short skirt and long stockings. Hmmm makes me a happy XinGuy.

Hmm FF VII Remake.. discussions about this seemed to die down unless someone mentioned it.

So i was playing CSGO the other week via a friend's account who let me play a few rounds while he went to the grocery store, and I said something about some guns being really bad compared to the meta weapons (AK, M4, Deagle, Tec9, AWP). Apparently, I forgot something. Why was I owning some 20+ year old college kids/terrorists with my Based CT-Aug? I forgot that i actually use the weapon scoped more often than straight up hip firing, which fits my style of "Defensive Offense". The AUG actually has a lot of stats that people tend to overlook but then again, it still has the lowest damage per hit among the ARs in the game, with the long-arse reload time.

This current version of CSGO is making me feel sorta happy. It must have been fun ELO boosting my friend. Lord Gaben pls don't ban me for ELO Boosting.

pkmin3033 April 15th, 2016 6:24 AM

How big is a full game these days, though? In the so-called AAA industry you're lucky to get 10 hours out of most titles, and even JRPGs, which have historically been titans in terms of the sheer amount of content they pack into them, have been clocking in at around 40 hours at most recently.

Now, I realise that quality is not measured solely by quantity, but when Square Enix of all people say "full game" that could mean ANYTHING. This is the company that won't stop screwing us over with smartphone releases nobody wants, delays upon delays upon delays, announcements of announcements, and consistent butchery of franchises. This is the company that doesn't think the things people like will sell. It's worrying.

That said, I'm half hoping they'll retcon FFVII so that I'll actually like it. I'd love to see references to Crisis Core - or, more specifically, Genesis - in the remakes. The compilation of FFVII is a complete clusterfuck right now, and this remake is giving them a great opportunity to tie all the loose threads together that they've made since the original title was released. I doubt they'll take it and do a good job with it, because this is Square Enix, the RPG version of Konami. But it's a possibility.

Whether a VN's actually a game varies, but regardless, we're totally okay with the discussion of them, so go crazy.

Until I actually get a release date I could give a damn less about this. We been hearing about a Tsukihime remake since the golden days of Hattori Hanzo and pictures aren't enough for me at this point.

Mostly, the licking. It was...disturbing. VERY disturbing.

As a side note, I'd consider visual novels as games, but only if they have some form of interaction, be it branching pathways or whatever else. Otherwise it's just like reading a comic online. Since most VNs have something like that, though...yeah. Games. Far more so than walking simulators.

My favorite part in any Action RPG such as Borderlands. Having a back pack full of weaponry and a head full of wrath. And that Green Hostile Stinger SMG is doing a lot of work just bodying a lot of fools. And when you are money capped, just keep every decent piece of loot. You'll never know when you need to switch to that Corrosive SMG to take out the right opponents.

Speaking of Borderlands and Action RPG style games.. if i were designing my own version of Borderlands or something, I'd make my mastery/talent trees. Here's what i thought of:

Stock images used belong to their respective owners. Please excuse the poor quality but yeah, something that i just thought off..

Warhound (Elite Marines of the US Army with obvious references to 80s-90s action movies and vidya games) Skill tree
http://i.imgur.com/WYh4ryC.png
Rip and Tear = Close Quarter Combat, Melee combat and damage, Ferocity, SMGs and Assault Rifles
Man and a Half = Tanking, Resistances, and Survivability
Cooking with Gas = Energy Weapons, Area of Effect Damage, Explosives

Siren (Females with mystical powers, definitely not Arcueid) skill tree
http://i.imgur.com/7iyFCeR.png
Banshee = Isolation, CQC, Survivability, Melee combat
Sister of Battle = Supportive Auras, Field Control, Use of Revolvers and Heavy Pistols
Nightraven = Assassinations, Acrobatic moves, Sniper Rifles, Silenced Weapons

Haven't thought about the passive nodes yet since icons are hard to make.

killer-curry April 16th, 2016 12:27 AM

it seems like you can spam thru the bullets with ease. The weapon buff are so cool, and freaking awesome if deal with higher damage.

Sometimes, I just want to play some WW2 games that are quite realistic and pack with thrills and funs.

pkmin3033 April 16th, 2016 2:38 AM

Pretty sure there wasn't much fun to be had on the battlefield, so I wouldn't say they're particularly realistic in any sense, aha. It's been a long time since I played any historical war games, though...not since one of the first Call of Duty titles, I think. One of these days I might actually buy one that isn't so multiplayer focused, just for the experience. It's not that I dislike them, it's just not something I'd typically play. Good to get out of your comfort zone every now and then, though! :3

...and there's another idea for a topic I might post later. Derp.

JJ Styles April 16th, 2016 3:05 AM

Interrupting your delicious chat with some Xin made skill trees for a character class (No nodes yet though): Also, maybe i should take up a short course on Game Design after i graduate. Who knows, i might end up devoloping vidya games more than i end up being in charge of recruitment and selection.

Class: Avatar (In-game leaders of the battle field who are obviously inspired by Fire Emblem. Specializes in Energy Swords, One handed firearms, and Tomes). Character class for people who prefer to fight with tactics rather than raw brute force (Warhound) or hand-eye reflexes (Siren)

Tactician: Skill tree that focuses heavily on air support (Air Strikes) and devastating energy magic.
Noble: Skill tree that focuses on supporting the team with Inspirational Auras, healing, and survival
Radiant: Manly as feck. Skill tree that tells people to be a "leader", you need to fight like a real man.

Also, a really good heavy single player focused FPS would definitely be Wolfenstein: The New Order since ITS ONLY SINGLE PLAYER. What i love about TNO is that while it only features a single player campaign, the single player campaign for the most part is definitely done well. I remember the explanation of not having any MP on the game since the devs (idsoftware, aka OUR GODS AND GODDESSES) felt that having both SP and MP on a game would feel inefficient. So there's none of that sense of diversion of resources. Also, its a game of killing Nazis turned up to 111x, with some of the most murderous means ever. Who doesn't love killing Nazis? If you feel that Nazis should be given pity and remorse, I'm on to you people ;)

Contrary to some belief that most people would think of me, I actually enjoy First Person Shooters more on Single Player form than on Multiplayer since I get to be more immersed in ripping people and demon's groins off. Multiplayer can be very taxing especially when i push myself to higher rankings and placements. I lose that whole immersion of groin ripping like a real effin maniac and be more concerned with my sweet delicious KDA and the tasty "VICTORY" in multiplayer, even in something like in Counter Strike and CoD4 where i used to body a lot of fools before i converted most of my MP competence on something else. Currently, my Multiplayer concerns are already on MOBAS. Battleborn though might be that game where the two greatest things ever (according to myself) are combined into one sweet delicious bloody meatball. Sorry Tracer (and Overwatch)

Co-Op campaigning is fine though. Its just as immersive, and the partners who kill demons/aliens/zombies/ and/or nazis together, bond and stay together. I remember some fond memories of me and my cousin playing Halo 1 on my cousin's OG XBox years and years ago when we visited them in Maryland and everything about Co-Op Halo 1 was joygasm.

pkmin3033 April 16th, 2016 3:29 AM

I'm sorely tempted to pick up a Wolfenstein title again actually, since it's always been a series that has never made any pretense at being anything other than what it is - a game where you blast stereotypical Nazis into atoms. I don't think it's supposed to be taken seriously, unlike series like CoD that have always tried to carry themselves with this ridiculous sense of gravity and self-importance that requires a suspension of disbelief I'm not willing to be part of, because they're trying to market themselves as historical war simulators. Don't get me wrong here, I don't HATE the series. I just can't get into the right mindset to enjoy it because of this...and because I like immersing myself in fantasy worlds when I play games. I don't care for any "realistic" games really.

Plus I had Wolfenstein 3D on GBA as a kid and I loved it. It was my first FPS. It was hard. I sucked at it. But I still enjoyed it.

Single-player FPS titles are totally fine; it's nice to shoot things instead of hack them to pieces every now and then; Borderlands has always been a great series, and I've enjoyed first-person stealth titles like Dishonored and BioShock as well, which give you a few more options. The fantasy setting makes it more appealing, in my opinion. I can lose myself in those. With stuff like Call of Duty I'm not entirely sure WHAT I'm supposed to be playing. Is it supposed to be realistic or isn't it? People need to make up their minds.

Co-op on current gen would be better if you weren't expected to pay for it. No co-op is worth the PS+ subscription, and nor are the crappy free games they offer you every month, so it's off-putting.
