A variety of factors influence it for me. It's usually a matter of aesthetics or voices, or just what I feel like going with at the time. But I do generally find myself playing gals more than guys these days.

---

Akiba's Trip is getting a...uh...

Acquire's making a new Akiba title. Akiba's Beat, their first Action RPG. Their first Action RPG. I...guess AT/AS wasn't one- or at least that's what they're asserting. And I'd disagree, but...details.

http://gematsu.com/2016/05/akibas-beat-announced-ps4-ps-vita

Anyway, didn't know the franchise was Akiba and Strip/Trip was one such title, but it makes sense. After all, it's a virtual tourism game in a lot of the same way the Yakuza series is, so this is less of a sequel and more of an adjacent entry.

Either way, if it gets released over here, I'll be interested. Been needing more Action RPGs in my diet.

pkmin3033 May 30th, 2016 10:06 PM

Guys have such uninspired designs a lot of the time, even with character customisation options...I typically find myself playing as the girl when I've got the choice too. That said, in Fates I've got a male avatar, because the only characters I like the look of are female, so...

Have you considered Anima for an Action RPG? That's out this week and it looks pretty interesting.

In other news Dungeons II is now on PS4...I wonder if I should get it. I used to love those kinds of top-down strategy titles, although this was back in the day when I played mostly on my computer; I'm not sure how point-and-click would handle on a console...hrmn.

Unknown# May 30th, 2016 11:41 PM

On the topic of action RPGs, has anyone here played Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core? I feel like that game doesn't get enough love.

pkmin3033 May 30th, 2016 11:47 PM

Crisis Core was better than the game that spawned it, in my opinion. Zack was more likeable than Cloud, Genesis was more interesting than Sephiroth - who was himself far more interesting in the game than he was in FFVII - and, whilst I HATED the level-up system and the fact that petrification was a death sentence, it was a fantastic game for its time. I'd be totally fine with it being one of the FFVII remake episodic titles if they gave it a straight-up adaptation with some gameplay tweaks...like the removal of that goddamn roulette.

Unknown# May 30th, 2016 11:52 PM

I would agree (Though the original will always hold a special place in my hear). Its partially why I'm not completely put off by the FFVII remake being an action RPG. I'm still not a fan of the fact its episodic, though. I just feel thats unnecessary.

Are there any other games that play like this out there, preferably on consoles? I can only play through New Game+ so many times before I want something new.

pkmin3033 May 31st, 2016 12:04 AM

I'm...very iffy about the FFVII remake. Episodic could mean literally anything. Considering they see FFXIII as a trilogy of titles - despite them being more or less standalone - I'd be inclined to believe they're going to split up the story into manageable chunks so that, when you have all of them, moving to the next game would be like swapping discs was back in the old days.

But this is Square Enix, who have taken a decade to release FFXV, have been giving us crappy smartphone titles of amazing franchises despite fan's pleas for console releases, and who are so out of touch with their target audience it's amazing they're still in business. Sparse episodic story-driven titles would be just the sort of thing I'd expect from them. A healthy dose of skepticism is required.

Hrmn...you could try Drakengard 3; asides from the flying segments it's a stage-based action-RPG, although it's a bit more geared towards hack-and-slash. The problem with Action RPGs these days is that they degenerate pretty quickly into button-mashers; Crisis Core had a combat system quite similar to Kingdom Hearts and was a lot more...technical, I suppose? Mission-based hunting titles like Soul Sacrifice Delta, Freedom Wars, and Toukiden are quite similar, though - they don't have the same rigorous equipment upgrading system that Monster Hunter does, and Soul Sacrifice in particular is a lot more technical. Might be worth thinking about if you want something similar-ish.

Continuing on of why i do play female avatars more often than guys in MMORPGs is basically said earlier:

Example of what melly said earlier:
Spoiler:
http://i.imgur.com/YasmK9H.jpg?1
its no contest. Everyone wants to play the Female version of the Archbishop.

Most of the time, Guy avatars in MMOs have (usually) less inspiring designs than the females, which i can't blame the game's art team. I mean, sure, most of the design team of an MMO are probably guys and these guys enjoy drawing and designing girls more than their own sex. Of course, I'm only refering to those MMOs that actually do some justice to female character designs and not the ones that overly sexualize females by giving them overly scantily clad clothing like in most other MMOs in their advertisements since the past few years.

http://i.imgur.com/YTfEEcK.jpg?1
The bonus in RO is that the female overworld sprites are also very cute to look at. Especially for those who main Archbishops (3rd job super priests).

Disclaimer: I mained either a Knight up to its 3rd Job (Rune Knight) and an Assassin (Guillotine Cross).

The only few times I've played as the guy in an MMO were MMOs that i actually considered taking seriously, like in one server in RO where i decided to be a guy (Male Knight), and in some other MMO that i played a long time ago (Pristontale, THE ORIGINAL ONE). And Diablo 2 and 3, being a barb main. Oh wait, Diablo is an MMO? Oh wait its not. But Diablo 3 had selectable genders and i decided to be a barb main, and I'm a male Barb since Male Barbarians are manly and iconic.

Then again, my gripe with some MMOs is that why do they have to genderlock classes.. like okay? I wanna play as a female knight, with her big womanly breastplates, heavy armor, big swords and bigger BFGs, and my glorious hair of destiny. Or i wanna play as a murderqueen Guilottine cross because female assassins are 5ever cool! Genderlocking classes is not cool MMORPG Makers! We wanna play as Female Knights, Female Assassins and Male Dancers, Male Medics. oVo, even though RO did have their own genderlocked classes in the Bard (male exclusive) and the Dancer (Female exclusive)

pkmin3033 May 31st, 2016 3:19 AM

Because we're still bogged down in gender roles in video games...well, either that or limited resources. Some developers deserve the benefit of the doubt with these things...and others don't. It's a case-by-case basis thing again, in my opinion. Really, the best thing to do is to either lock down roles for the sake of the story - and make damn sure they're well-developed characters if they fall into the expected roles - or provide a very thorough character customisation system. With adjustable breast sizes, thank you, Nintendo.

That's one thing I love about Disgaea actually - it's pretty diverse. You get male and female Fighters, Clerics, Mages, Knights, etc. They come with their own bonuses, too. Same with FFXIV - I could be whoever I wanted. I was a female Gladiator/Paladin and I was amazing. I miss my character ;_;

Playing through Dark Souls series in order now. Just got my DS2 playthrough build worked out:

HOLY SHIT, it's GUTS. Because Guts is huge, which means he has huge guts. RIP AND TEAR.

AT THIS PARTICULAR MOMENT IN TIME, I DON'T BELIEVE I HAVE A HEALTHIER AND A MORE DEEPLY FELT RESPECT FOR ANY OBJECT IN THIS UNIVERSE THAN MY PARTICULAR GAMING MOUSE!

Well its just a cheap white G-10 ARES mouse which I'll probably still use for my new PC once its done.

HUH? WUZZAT? I like what i see... an important looking news article!
BLIZZARD FINALLY DID IT! Overwatch prawns being taken off the door Sorta NSFW btw.

and I like to point out that this is Blizzard protecting their IP. I mean sure okay, prawns of Blizzo property are bad. I've also heard from other people that youtube content creators for Blizzo have to also watch their language since they can't use typical SpicyLingo when making Blizzard-related gaming videos. Which is why we barely hear anyone making like Hearthstone, WoW, Starcraft, HoTS, and especially now Overwatch vids go crazy... Blizzo why..

EDIT:
Quote:

To maintain and protect the image of our games, Blizzard also requires that Productions maintain the 'T' rating that has been given to its products by the ESRB."
Also, no wonder why most of the Blizzo related youtubers that I've seen like Swifty (WoW) and Muzelk (with his OVW vids) are so careful with their language. It seems that motormouths will get Blizzo shanked if they even try. That means that if ever i try making videos on Blizzard's games, I'll probably get blizz-tagged ASAP. I'm already a motor mouth in both text form and especially in person D: HEEEEEEEELPPPPP!!!

pkmin3033 May 31st, 2016 11:05 PM

As generally distasteful as explicit fanart usually is, I'm surprised Blizzard is so uptight about it. Any publicity is good publicity, as they say. When you've got an excited, dedicated fanbase before the game is even out, it seems almost like a disservice to reward that level of dedication with censoring. I'm not saying they should actively support or even acknowledge it - far from it, that would be extremely stupid considering the nature of it - but to actively censor it? It just seems a bit...well, strange.

I'm sorry, I'm not buying the "protecting our image" line. Nintendo are as family-oriented as they come, to the point that they frequently censor their games for Western releases, but nowhere do I see them doing anything to actively or effectively remove the obscene amounts of Pokemon fanart, and let me tell you, there is some seriously disturbing stuff online when it comes to Pokemon. It's the internet. You're fighting a losing battle here, Blizzard. You're just making yourself look silly. It's an admirable effort, but when every other company pretty much just ignores it, just doing that would have been enough.

Moving away from that particularly sticky subject...as for the copyright video thing, Jim Sterling found an amazing way around that. Well, that works with monetisation, but I'd think it'd apply for making actual videos as well, maybe? They've not cut out his recent Jimquisition on the Overwatch scene, anyway...by the way, don't watch that at work. Or if you're even remotely sensitive. Because it's Jim Sterling, with all that implies.

Karma Police June 1st, 2016 2:01 AM

Blizzard is fighting a losing battle if they think they can take down all the rule 34 of Overwatch out there. Active censorship is only going to draw more attention to it. Streisand Effect and all.

pkmin3033 June 1st, 2016 2:54 AM

It wouldn't surprise me if that was the point of it, actually - more publicity for Blizzard, more sales for Overwatch, etc. It's driven down the price of Battleborn by 50% in GAME already...well, that might be a half-term deal, but I was still pretty shocked by that today!

Speaking of half term...PSN sales. God damnit. £4 for The Walking Dead on Vita, Axiom Verge for £9, £8 for BioShock Infinite plus DLC, £7.39 for all three Trine games...need to get me a PSN voucher, stat. Or just buy the things, but then, reward card points.

JJ Styles June 1st, 2016 4:59 AM

I need to put my current reply in some sweet delicious bullet points (or some nice "-"'s) for once so I'll say them one by one

- Ahh Jimmy.. when it comes to giving Konami a verbal smackdown, you never fail me. Also, that Copyright Deadlock got me learning. I could always just Stream League though once i GIT GUD (i mean I'm already decent anyway as a League player, but I'd definitely need to sharpen my mental fortitude even harder), or something. I'd want to have an alternative source of fun (and the $$$) other than some office job.

- We can all thank Kotaku for having to expose that sticky side of Overwatch... Blizzard must be celebrating in their offices with Dustin Browder screaming TERRIBLE TERRIBLE DAMAGE in their offices. Not that its anything true though. But that Kotaku article mang.

- Is it me or is that Overwatch Porn episode of the Jimquisition is one of the better things I've seen lately? I really love how he pointed out that we need more colorful and more personality based shooters in this day and age, and not just more CoD chasing here and there. And I'm proud and happy of the month of May being literally a month of pure colorful, personality driven, and simply fun MAYHEM with DOOM, Battleborn, and Overwatch definitely being the highlights of this year's May 2016. MAYHEM BABY!

- is PSN finally learning from the Lord Master King and God Emperor of 1-2-2.5 Gaben himself? You gotta love it when PSN sales act like a man possessed xD.

- I really would love to endorse more people to help support the Battleborn community of all things. I've mentioned it before that I would have prefered Battleborn myself because its an FPS+MOBA hybrid, and I have a sticky fetish for MOBAS. I mean I would if i could really. Which is why I would love to tell BB's players to keep their community alive instead of needlessly moving to Overwatch because they wanna play as Tracer, Widowmaker, Mercy, D.Va (mah bae) or any of OVW's lovely ladies. I mean Battleborn has some nicely designed characters as well, and I've already checked who's the bae material of the game...

oh wait.. Its just Phoebe and Thorn. Phoebe for those who like blondes, and Thorn for those who like tough looking white haired ladies with war paint.

Blizzard, stay the hell away from those lovely "fanart" pics of D.va

They can't stop it. But it'll be amusing to watch.

On a related note, the popcorn's done. Want some?

I see what you did there. I've got my eye on you, mister.

I wonder how this is all going to be remembered...because it WILL be remembered. The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that that is the whole point of this ridiculous campaign to eliminate Rule 34 and stifle a ridiculously dedicated fandom.

...still not buying the game here.

Sir Codin June 1st, 2016 12:30 PM

Blizzard is really effing up right now by putting themselves such a compromising position. The artists won't come quietly and are sure to be real tight about this sticky situation. Blizzard better pull out right now before they go deeper or else they'll have a huge mess on their hands. If not, they're most certainly screwed.

Karma Police June 1st, 2016 12:49 PM

Blizzard will probably enjoy all the publicity they're getting. They've been in such controversies since the start of this year so it's nbd for them.

pkmin3033 June 1st, 2016 1:03 PM

Controversy sells titles. People will buy the game just to see what all the fuss is about; they'll want to know what sort of characters could inspire such a ridiculously filled-out pornography fanart demographic. Admittedly, it IS very interesting if you don't know anything about the game...I mean, Rule 34 aside, it's not a common occurence. It's even less common that a publisher will step up and do something about it. It's all very clever...although I still think it a disservice to the fandom and their creativity, regardless of whether that creativity is being put to the best possible use or not.

JJ Styles June 1st, 2016 1:40 PM

Before i get srs:
http://i.imgur.com/K4feQ1v.gif
PHOEBE PLZ!

And it all started from a player's complaint about Tracer's booty months ago...

I forgot to mention something like this...

We are all aware about Rule 34 of whatever game there is right? If it exists there's sticky stuff of it. I mean, even something as Dynasty Warriors wasn't safe, and remember jimmies and jilles, Dynasty Warriors way back especially during the dark ages was basically a sausage fest save for the few chosen ladies (SSX, Qiao Twins, Diao Chan, Zhurong, Zien Ji) and I still remember those dark days where I was that desperate... hey, i was a young and stupid teenager back then and I had to claw my way through a ton of pages just to see if there exist decent DW Doujins that didn't involve BL and Bara... then came DW5 and beyond, and especially right now, every faction, is now a nice Co-ed of things with each faction having a sizeable amount of ladies,. inb4Xinthat'stotallyhardcore and Lu Lingqi and Diao Chan.

Also, this is official Koei art. its a work of beauty. and I get macho and other Yinping's fans regarding that booty. Indeed. Okay I see were they are coming from. I am on to you.

So yeah, i mean, its already a given. Yes for a couple of people like some of us here, its really hard to accept that we can't have any game nowadays without a perverted fandom. But as mentioned before, most companies probably do not go to an extent on going after said fanwork as long as they aren't like using any of the game's assets (as mentioned before, many of the sticky OVW stuff have used models extracted directly from the game, and for Blizzard's case, they have the right to cease and desist these things because its their game assets.. its not really all about the prawn)

However, I am still a believer that hey we all have our own ways of expressing our love in whatever mediums. Some people like writing fan fictions. Some people like just simply making youtube videos (and those doing youtube full time, are making money of it as well and providing more exposure to the game), some love making fan art, and some... well.. we already know.

I mean I like D.Va and Mei, it be all like, having fun together, giving me something cool, LIKE YEAH, JUST I tag team with D.Va and Mei with my SUPER SHOTGUN, THATS HOW ITS DONE... I dunno what the F*** i'm talking about... but what i do know is that seeing that Blizzard is doing something like this, and knowing Blizzard's status as an iconic company already since the dawn of time, some developers might try following Blizzard's ways of keeping things PG and this might become another Polygon or Kotaku capitalization of some distasteful controversies to capitalize on, and another culture war..

Or something. I dunno. I mean all i care about is either breaking enemy faces and carrying my teammates and being a nice and responsible Doomguy or Xin Zhao to all ;)

Even Minecraft wasn't safe, Dynasty Warriors had no chance. Rule 34 of Dynasty Warriors still makes at least some sense when you look at it that way.

I mean, I really don't get the appeal of pixelated blocks doing the dirty. But whatever gets people going, I suppose.
