Showers Likely With Isolated Storms Possible

So I've been testing the waters with a Rain team, as the only types of weather-based teams I've made previously have been Sand teams and a troll Sun team. I feel like there's something wrong with this team, but I'm not really sure what it is.

http://media.pldh.net/pokemon/gen6/xy-animated/642-therian.gif
Thundurus-Therian @ Life Orb
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunder
- Nasty Plot
- Thunder Wave
- Focus Blast

I wanted to take advantage of Thunder's 100% accuracy in Rain, so I picked Thundurus-Therian as my Thunder Pokemon. It has 145 Special Attack, giving it the most powerful Thunder in the game. With Thunder, it has a chance to OHKO Rotom-Wash after Stealth Rock, can very easily OHKO (Mega) Slowbro and Manaphy. It can also score victories against opposing weather-setters, beating Mega Charizard Y, Mega Tyranitar, non-Scarf Tyranitar, and Abomasnow provided Thunder/Focus Blast don't miss. tl;dr, this is my Wallbreaker.

http://media.pldh.net/pokemon/gen6/xy-animated/186.gif
Politoed @ Damp Rock
Ability: Drizzle
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Scald
- Encore
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Didn't really know what to do here, as I only have Politoed on this team because of Drizzle, of course. Opted to go for a physically bulky set, and it has proven itself useful so far.

http://media.pldh.net/pokemon/gen6/xy-animated/641-therian.gif
Tornadus-Therian @ Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Hurricane
- Knock Off
- U-turn
- Focus Blast

Again, I picked a Pokemon that can take advantage of a move having perfect accuracy in rain, in this case, Hurricane. While this mon isn't quite as powerful as Thundurus-Therian, it is rather useful, being able to cover some things that can eat up Thunder and Focus Blast, such as Mega Venusaur. U-Turn is for momentum, and Knock Off is crucial against Pokemon with Leftovers, as it makes them slightly more frail. Focus Blast is great against Tyranitar, as it OHKOs it even in sand, but Scarf Tyranitar can give this thing problems.

http://media.pldh.net/pokemon/gen6/xy-animated/260-mega.gif
Swampert-Mega @ Swampertite
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Waterfall
- Earthquake
- Ice Punch
- Stealth Rock

Chose Mega Swampert over Mega Pidgeot because rain-boosted Waterfall from max attack Mega Swampert does a bit more damage to an average mon than max special attack Hurricane from Mega Pidgeot. It also has a large movepool, and has a very nice coverage move in Ice Punch, which OHKOs offensive Garchomp, and even at -1, still OHKOs Landorus. I also wanted a Stealth Rock setter, so opted to give this guy Rocks instead of replacing a mon with Ferrothorn.

http://media.pldh.net/pokemon/gen6/xy-animated/490.gif
Manaphy @ Leftovers
Ability: Hydration
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Tail Glow
- Surf
- Energy Ball
- Ice Beam

Just a normal Manaphy set, except I can use the Rain to my advantage now.

http://media.pldh.net/pokemon/gen6/xy-animated/497.gif
Serperior @ Life Orb
Ability: Contrary
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Leaf Storm
- Hidden Power [Rock]
- Dragon Pulse
- Glare

Again, just a regular Serperior set. Opted to go with Hidden Power Rock over Fire and Ground because even a +2 Hidden Power Fire does not score the kill against Ferrothorn in the Rain, whereas Gyro Ball is an easy 2HKO. Hidden Power Ground seems a bit redundant to me, as all of my other Pokemon can handle and kill Heatran without a problem, so it would rarely see actual use. Hidden Power Rock however, can OHKO Charizard Y after Stealth Rock damage, and OHKOs anyway at +2. It also takes care of Volcarona, which can be another threat to the team.

I'm not an expert by any means but it seems to me that you might want to do something about rocks with two flying types on your team. You've also got nothing that can absorb toxic/toxic spikes which could potentially be problematic.

Anti December 13th, 2015 8:52 AM

i would definitely switch up thundurus-t to thundurus-i though because prankster thunder wave is so much more useful for you than whatever volt absorb and the extra 20 base satk is providing. this is especially true because you lack a swift swimmer except mega pert who needs to be mega evolved beforehand.

...and that's my only real critique of the team. you're defensively compromised by not having a high speed tier poke like kabutops or kingdra, and you're missing an opportunity offensively as well. i think kingdra in place on manaphy makes a lot of sense, and if you're really worried about the stall matchup without it you can run knock off (or taunt) over hp rock, dragon pulse or glare on serperior (this shuts down chansey) and/or taunt on tornadus-t over knock or uturn. i think this is making much more use of rain than hydration is.

in the weaknesses department, i would definitely watch out for offensive talon sets. this is where kabutops often comes in handy, but you can't fit everything, and i think the utility that pokes like torn-t provide is really nice.

A Moon Gust December 13th, 2015 12:12 PM

Pokemon that are major threats to your team: [Mega] Garchomp, Mega Char X, Mega Altaria, Kyurem-B, Dragonite, Sylveon, Mega Gardevoir, Excadrill, Tornadus-T, [email protected], Weavile, and Clefable.
I do agree with Anti that you should change Thundurus-t to THundurus-I for the same reasons. Using prankster t-wave helps you with checking majority of dragon dancers.
I suggest you change Tornadus-T's item from Leftovers to Life Orb and change Knock Off to Iron Tail so you can check Fairy types.
I suggest you replace Manaphy or Serperior with a steel or a fairy type of some sort so opposing teams can't just click Outrage or Draco 6 times. Manaphy and Serperior are actually the most expandable members on your team in my opinion. I do not think you should change both because they do pressure Calm Minders such as Slowbro, Mega Sableye and stall in general. Scizor seems like an ideal option but I am still not sure exactly what your Dragon resist should be.

Sets:
Thundurus @ Life Orb
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunder Wave
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power Ice
- Focus Blast / Nasty Plot

Tornadus-Therian @ Life Orb
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 76 Atk / 180 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Hurricane
- Focus Blast
- U-turn
- Iron Tail

Besides that, nice team!

Sayuri December 13th, 2015 1:00 PM

I do agree that you should maybe replace Manaphy with either Scizor or possibly a Special Weakness Policy Aegislash or Scarfvoir if you want to keep the 5/1 Special/Physical ratio on your team. I do agree also that Thundurus-I would benefit your team more, and Volt Absorb really isn't very necessary, assuming you're replacing Manaphy.

Aegislash is an Uber Pokemon. This team was made with the current OU environment in mind.

Gardevoir isn't worth using as its regular form, as its Mega form does virtually all its roles better.

Sorry, I automatically assumed it was for Battle Spot.

I only mentioned Scarfed Gardevoir as it's a fast Fairy-Type and I've had success with it recently.

Dark Azelf December 15th, 2015 1:46 PM

Yeah Spikes and Stealth Rock are the end of this team. Kabutops would really help in that it provides an offensive threat aswell as a spinner and a check to misc threats like Talon and a solid revenge killer as anti said. I think dropping Manaphy works here especially since this team is slow af lol.

Id also be careful about Ferrothorn and **** that can use water against you that you cant KO easily see: Keldeo, Toxicroak is amazing on rain for this reason so you could look into that or even Magnezone which pairs well with Torny-T. Sub Charge Beam is a nice set on rain teams and sets up all over Ferro not having to worry about Leech Seed. Just dont use HP Fire lol. Mag would fit over Thund obv.

I also question offensive pert as a rocks setter but if it works i guess. I always liked Rain Dance in the last slot incase Poli gets rekt or w/e lol.

Im not a fan of serp on rain since HP Fire is alot better than Hidden Power Gimmick and obvs you cannot use it lol. Ferrothorn is cool as it provides a more durable defensive backbone for you to fall back on but yeah and free's up a slot on pert in regards to rocks but up to you.

Toxic > Encore imo on Poli.

Life Orb on Torny. Taunt if fat teams are causing you issues.

Probably still needs some adjustments, but this is how it stands right now.

ddrox13 December 16th, 2015 3:04 PM

How about a Tentacruel? Bulky, sets and absorbs T-Spikes and Toxic, gets Rapid Spin for Rocks and Rain boosted Scald is insane power for a utility pokemon. You can throw Rain Dance on there too, I assume it gets it.

Also Ferrothorn is a rather good way of absorbing hits, as Rain allows it to do it's thing without worries of Fire coverage. I used a Band Ferro to great effect on my one Rain team ever, not that I recommend banding the thing...

Nah December 16th, 2015 3:45 PM

If you're using Ferro you could just use SR in place of Spikes to free up a slot on Swampert. Spikes is more of a luxury and I kind of agree with Elf that Rain Dance might be nice to have since having a back up rain maker is good. Or even just throw in some sort of coverage move.

gimmepie December 17th, 2015 3:13 AM

Why not use Rocky Helmet on Ferro? That in combination with hazards and iron barbs punished physical attackers you switch into and because of the rain you don't have to fear Flare Blitz on Talon etc so that's not such a risky idea imo. It's not like you don't have recovery available since Ferro almost always runs Leech Seed, although it's certainly not as reliable as lefties.

Also in agreement that you should go with Rocks not Spikes and then add Rain Dance to Swampert. I don't think Rain teams are complete without a backup rain dancer.

You could use Rocky Helmet Ferrothorn, but it will get worn down faster, since it will lack the passive recovery in Leftovers and may not have time to use Leech Seed.

I'd consider moving some of your Def EVs on Ferro into Sp. Def so you can absorb Special Attacks a bit better. It's Def is naturally higher anyways. Irrc the standard is 252/88/168 with Relaxed nature though it's really just up to whatever threatens your team most.
