My first "Real" team.
Hey, thaks for stoping by. I been playing the 5th Gen games lately. And after beating the main story in White 2 i decided i wanted to challenge the E4 and the tournaments with my favorite pokemons and some other ones that i like, (and that can get in the game without trading, since i dont have two DS or a friend who likes pokemon) I almost have it, but there is an empty space on my team.
My current team is: -Scrafty, Gastrodon, Gallade, Rotom-W and Dragonite. As you can see its weak to Flying and Grass. And i really dont want to make it weaker to any of thoose. And i cant decide between Ampharos, Snorlax and Forretres. Ampharos can become a nightmare under rain and would make my team weak to ground, but Rotom's ability prevents that. Snorlax would make it weak to fighting, but its a good Special wall that can attack. Forretress is weak only to fire, buts its more of a entry-Hazard wall. Which one do you think suits the best? Or what Pokemon would you put its place? |

First of all, welcome to the team building section of PC, i hope that i can be of some help to you. First of all, we need to know what sort of movesets you are currently running and if you are looking to challenge other players online, or are you just going for the elite four? Also what IV's, natures, abilities and EV's do you have in place for your team? if you are unsure of what this means then i'll explain that to you or you can use this site or Bulbapedia to look it up yourself. If i was to use this exact team online i would perhaps use the following set ups (other people on here tend to want to change your entire team so i'm going to stick with the team you suggested and give you some options on how to use them effectively) Scrafty: Ability: Moxie EV's: 252 HP, 252 attack, 4 def Nature: Adamant (or Impish if you want to be more tanky) Item: Leftovers (or Sitrus Berry) Moves: Poison Jab, Dragon Dance (or Swagger), Hi-Jump kick (or drain punch for sustain) and Knock off Scrafty is a pretty tanky pokemon so you'll have no worries taking hits, if you wanted to go all out tank you could swap the EVs to 252 hp, 130 DEF and 126 special defense. Poison Jab will deal with your 4x fairy weakness, dragon dance will allow you to become more powerful and outspeed more pokemon, drain punch and hi-jump kick for STAB damage and coverage and Knock-off for STAB and removing your opponents items. Gastrodon (A personal Favourite) Ability: Storm Drain EV's: 252 HP, 126 Def , 130 Special Def Nature: Modest Item: Leftovers Moves: Scald, Ice beam, Earth Power (Or Stockpile), Recover Gastrodon can be quite the tank, with a great typing and only a 4x weakness to grass, Storm drain allows you to gain a Spec. Att boost when targeted by a water based attack, Scald allows you to burn the opponent to reduce their attack by 1/2, ice beam takes out our grass weakness and you can either go Earth power for coverage and damage or stockpile for tankyness. Recover is there to lay down the pain by keeping Gastro nice and healthy Gallade Ability: Justified EV's: 252 attack, 252 Speed, 4 HP Nature: Jolly Item: Galladite Moves: Knock off, Drain Punch (or Psycho cut), Rock Slide, Poison Jab Knock off will kill off our ghost weakness, Drain punch is there for sustain, however psycho cut is also useful for high crit chance, Rockslide removes our flying weakness and is good coverage, and poison jab deals with those pesky fairies we have weaknesses throughout the team with. Rotom-W Ability: Levitate EV's: 252 def, 252 special defense, 4 HP Nature: Modest (or Calm) Item: Leftovers Moves: Will-o-wisp, hydro-pump, volt switch, dark pulse (or discharge, or Hidden power fire) Standard Rotom-W set up, uber tank, to breakdown any attackers. Dragonite Ability: Multiscale EV's: 252 speed, 252 attack, 4 hp Nature: Jolly Item: Leftovers Moves: Dragon Tail, Extreme speed, Iron head, Roost (Or dragon dance) Dragon tail will allow you to get rid of a bad match-up, Iron head is going to smash Rock, Ice and fairy weaknesses and extreme speed is going to get you that KO if the opponent s low health. As for the final pokemon, i recommend Forretress (its steal and bug typing is VERY good) Forretress Ability: Sturdy EV's: 252 Attack, 252 Def, 4 Hp Nature: Brave Item: Custap berry Moves: Stealth Rocks, Gyro ball, Explosion, Rock slide (or Earthquake) Ok this pokemon should always be your starting pokemon in battle, why? because its got stealth rocks, stealth rocks will limit your opponents switching of pokemon by causing damage to them when they switch or send a pokemon into battle, this also has an advantage for you as Forretress is 4x weak to fire, with stealth rocks up, fire types will take 2x damage from stealth rocks (4x if they are fire/flying), this will make an opponent think twice before sending a fire pokemon in on you however, if they send a fire pokemon in straight away, we can set up our stealth rocks and if they use a fire move on use, we are guaranteed to survive thanks to Sturdy ability, now what we then do is use Explosion, because we have a custap berry as our held item, it increases the moves priority by 1 stage if we are in red health (which we will be as we'll be on 1 HP). this will knock us out but also deal MASSIVE damage to our opponent, and likely take them out with us. (a personal favourite of mine). I hope that helps you with your team building, any questions just ask :) |
Thanks for explaning me about how things work here! I'm kinda embarased now xP
Also, Wow! What a strategy for forretres. Thats awesome! I will have it in my team! And I'm gonna make a few changes on my pokemon's movesets too. Thanks a lot bro! |

-Dragon Dance -Crunch -High Jump Kick/Drain Punch -Ice Punch Nature: Jolly EVs: 252 Atk/4 SDef/252 Spe Item: Life Orb/Leftovers/Lum Berry Ability: Moxie or (this is an infinitely better take on a bulky Scrafty set): -Bulk Up -Crunch -Drain Punch -Rest Nature: Careful EVs: 252 HP/4 Def/252 SDef Item: Leftovers Ability: Shed Skin Having Gastrodon split defensive EVs is a waste. It's better off going full physically defensive to better check things like Keldeo: -Scald -Earthquake/Earth Power -Ice Beam/Toxic -Recover Nature: Relaxed/Bold EVs: 252 HP/252 Def/4 SDef Item: Leftovers Ability: Storm Drain As with Scrafty, Knock Off wasn't useful for Gallade in Gen V. Even Gallade itself wasn't that usable in the standard environment. If you want better Fighting Pokemon in Gen V, there's Lucario and Infernape: Lucario: -Swords Dance -Close Combat -Extreme Speed -Ice Punch/Crunch/Bullet Punch Nature: Adamant EVs: 252 Atk/4 Def/252 Spe Item: Life Orb Infernape: -Flare Blitz -Close Combat -U-turn -Thunder Punch/Mach Punch Nature: Jolly EVs: 252 Atk/4 SDef/252 Spe Item: Choice Band or -Overheat/Fire Blast -Close Combat -Thunder Punch -Hidden Power (Ice)/U-turn/Mach Punch Nature: Naive/Hasty EVs: 180 Atk/76 SAtk/252 Spe Item: Life Orb/Expert Belt or -Overheat -Close Combat -Fake Out -Stealth Rock Nature: Naive EVs: 252 Atk/4 SAtk/252 Spe Item: Focus Sash or -Flare Blitz/Fire Blast -Close Combat -U-turn -Hidden Power (Ice)/Stone Edge Nature: Naive EVs: 36 Atk/220 SAtk/252 Spe Item: Choice Scarf Dragon Tail has negative priority, meaning that it doesn't go well with Dragon Dance should Dragonite choose to run it. Iron Head/Iron Tail also weren't useful on Dragonite, as Earthquake was a better coverage move to hit Steels with. And speaking of Steels, your Dragonite set is outright walled by them: -Outrage -Extreme Speed -Waterfall/Fire Punch -Earthquake/Superpower Nature: Adamant EVs: 252 Atk/4 Def/252 Spe Item: Choice Band Ability: Multiscale or -Dragon Dance -Outrage/Dragon Claw -Fire Punch -Earthquake/Extreme Speed/Roost Nature: Adamant EVs: 252 Atk/4 SDef/252 Spe Item: Lum Berry/Leftovers Ability: Multiscale Custap Berry Forretress should be its own dedicated moveset and is best used as a lead. The standard defensive Forretress is better if you want Forretress to keep setting up hazards over and over throughout the match when needed. The second set has Volt Switch to let Forretress get a frail teammate safely into battle: -Stealth Rock -Spikes/Toxic Spikes -Gyro Ball/Rapid Spin -Explosion Nature: Lax EVs: 4 HP/252 Atk/252 Def Item: Custap Berry Ability: Sturdy or -Stealth Rock/Spikes -Gyro Ball/Hidden Power (Ice) -Volt Switch -Rapid Spin Nature: Relaxed/Bold EVs: 252 HP/252 Def/4 SDef Item: Leftovers Ability: Sturdy Quote:
Take note that a few Pokemon not on that list are still usable, but they're not as good as the ones on that list, IMO. Go here if you're looking for the current generation: http://www.smogon.com/dex/xy/formats/ou/ |

If you want to completely cream the Elite for and champion then you may want to consider using the guides Platinumdude has posted. But my set-ups are designed to use your favourite pokemon and give you some interesting and cool set-ups to help you in the Meta game when you start to play online (if you decide you want to do that). Whilst i'm not the most greatest battler, i love having fun with some interesting and cool set ups. If you ever want to have any advice on set-ups that are different from your smogon style ones you'll get from the other PC members here then feel free to ask. Just for your information when we talk about Smogon and VGC this is what we mean: Smogon rules: A website dedicated to pokemon which has its own pokemon battling server, you can literally try out any sets you like and battle them out without having to grind for the right natures, abilities and EVs/IV's. Smogons community is all about reducing the luck factor in pokemon, and revolves more around out predicting your opponent. Some people like this as its more about skill (in some way), pokemon are organized into different tiers and there are rules for each tier that prevent the use of some pokemon and move sets. If you'd like to know more about it, head over to www.smogon.com. VGC: commonly known as Video Game Cartridge (as in the actual game itself), these players tend to prefer battling with no restrictions which offers a lot of variety in battling which also is more challenging to some degree as you have to know everything about pokemon, the only rules are whats set in the actual game and there is the luck factor with critical hits and things to consider. It really doesn't matter which pokemon style you prefer, both have many pros and cons, but all in all its about how you prefer to battle, if you prefer battling with your favourites thats fine, you are probably more suited to VGC. |
