Character Similarity

Is it easier for you to construct and develop a character that mimics aspects of your personality or appearance, or someone who you cannot relate to at all? Which is more fun to write?

Not sure it's easier to write about someone who is similar to myself, but I'm sure putting a bit of my own characteristics into characters sometimes. Completely different characters can actually be more fun to write, as you are forced to put yourself in another kind of thinking and see the world differently in order to be able to portray them well.

I say utilize existing tropes and slowly flesh out each one on the basis of personal motivations and habits.

I write more about characters that are completely unlike me; it's more fun, as it's like getting to know a new person.

As a writer, some of your aspects will seep into your characters, if you like it or not. For me, it's my sense of humour. The thing I pay attention to is how much I use it depending on how fitting it is for the character, so to not make dead serious characters also huge wise crackers. And I may shift my focus a bit from bad puns to more witty remarks, depending on what fits the character, but none of my characters tend to have a sense of humour very unlike mine. Outside of that, my characters don't tend to be like me. They all have strenghts and insecurities that I don't have, and I try to give them those to make them interesting not to make myself identify with them.

I feel like the base of my main characters are me, but then I branch out away from that and explore personalities that I don't have. I find that the characters themselves are as influenced by me just as much as their environment, so it's a combination of the two.

Same here. A lot of my original characters tend to be someone having a different personality from me. For instance, they tend to be more outgoing while I'm pretty quiet in real life.
