How would you rate the ORAS soundtrack?

So, the soundtrack of Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire consists primarily of remixed, updated versions of music from the originals, as well as several brand new pieces.

Here's a few examples of updated versions of original tracks:

Spoiler:

The Gym Leader Battle Music

Deoxys Battle Music

Primal Legendary Encounter Music

And here are some examples of brand new pieces introduced in ORAS:

Spoiler:

Soaring Theme (night)

Wally Battle Music

Zinna Battle Music

So, how do you have any thoughts on the ORAS music overall? How would you rate the soundtrack as a whole? Are there any remixes that you thought were especially better than the originals? Any that you thought weren't as good as the originals?

Kawaii Shoujo Duskull January 1st, 2016 1:38 PM

Honestly I love the soundtrack of ORAS. Almost every single song was remixed perfectly(and those that weren't perfect were still pretty good).

I think the most disappointing remixed song for me was probably deoxys's battle theme. It just felt underwhelming compared to the original version to me.

The music for battling primal groudon/kyogre was great though. I really liked how they had the original version of the song fade in and out of the remixed song itself. Really good touch.
Giving secret bases and Fortree different themes was a nice touch too.

Kaiyu January 2nd, 2016 6:19 AM

I would rate as 10/10. The soundtrack is really amazing. Usually I would only listen to a soundtrack once but with this one I've listened to it over and over again.

Evyl January 2nd, 2016 6:52 PM

One of the best to date, though I can't decide if I like it better than B2W2 or XY.

Skillah January 2nd, 2016 7:12 PM

Definitely one of my favorite sound tracks of all time. I think ORAS did it great justice. I usually played with the sound on full for the maximum experience. ^_^

I thought it was pretty darned good too! It wasn't as good as I expected though, I must admit. Most of the tracks sounded more or less the same as the originals to me, but that's certainly not bad, since it was a great soundtrack to begin with.

So is there any one in particular that you guys would say is your favorite? My favorite is definitely the Primal encounter theme. It's just so cool how they mixed in the remixed version with the original GBA one, like Kawaii Shoujo Duskull said. It just feels so epic :')

My favorite would be "Southern Island". It's very calm and soothing. It's my favorite place to be at in Pokémon Alpha Sapphire.

Holy smokes, I almost forgot about this lovely piece. It's really relaxing. I could honestly go to sleep to it! If only we could hear it more than just once in the game :'c

I wasted majority of my first play-through at Southern Island just so I could listen to the music lol. It can help me go to sleep most of the time.

Hey, that's what a remake is all about ;)

I like the surfing music in these games too. I think out of all the beginning area tracks, Littleroot Town's theme is my favorite.

Nas160 January 4th, 2016 4:09 AM

Oh, man...I can't describe ORAS' soundtrack with any words other than beautiful. :) It may be a little bit of bias since my first game was Emerald, but I think the re-done songs were absolutely perfect. Some remixes stayed somewhat faithful to the original (route music, Ever Grande City), some changed the tempo (Fortree City, Archie/Maxie battle) and feel (Mt. Chimney) entirely, but in the end, all of them brought new life to the various songs from the original in different amazing ways, while also still feeling new and fresh- something that all remakes should do. :) The songs really enhance the originals, and dare I say, at least a lot of them are even better in my opinion. Overall, they all just make the adventure feel even bigger and grander than the originals (and the visuals also help that too :P). And of course, they made the game an amazing experience for those who have childhood memories of playing the originals. :)

I was disappointed that there wasn't a "GBA Sounds" item that replaces the music with the RSE versions like they did in HGSS, but the new songs are just so dang good that I've come to be perfectly fine with that. :) Even so, the, the little snippets of RSE music in there were all really nice touches (beginning of the game, Primal Groudon/Kyogre battle, Time Travel Award).

Overall, AS has easily become my favorite Pokémon game of all time, and the soundtrack is one of the biggest reasons. Powerfully nostalgic, and enhancing the original's charm tenfold. And yes, the new music is amazing too ^^ I really like the different Zinnia songs played during the Delta Episode, especially her battle theme.

If you had the Eon Ticket, you could go back to catch the remaining Eon Latios/Latias you didn't get earlier in the game :)

There's quite a lot that I love, but I'll list a few ^^

Littleroot Town - Just really instills that warm, home-y, nostalgic feeling for me, and it's perfect to start your grand adventure with :)
Route music - All of these are just so great! The ones I especially love are Route 101, 104, 110, 120. All of these just really take me back and take in the nostalgia <3
Battle music - Particularly the rival battle, wild battle, trainer battle, elite four battle, and especially Gym battle music. All of these are just so much more energetic and awesome sounding, and I love them :) Especially the Gym Leader theme, I honestly cannot stop listening to that one ^^
Southern Island - This song is very serene, calm and relaxing, and it reminds me of when I encountered Latias in AS, who became my favorite Pokémon shortly after that :')
Primal/Rayquaza battle - Dear god do I love these. In short, both of theme amazingly instill a sense of "you are battling one of the mightiest creatures in the history of the world" like every legendary song should, and helps the Pokémon establish a very intimidating, strong presence. The Primal battle theme has samples of the original track, which is one of my favorite little details in this game, while the Rayquaza battle really sounds intense, like from some epic action movie or something. After being told the history and lore of the ancient savior Pokémon from the heavens, you really feel the weight of standing right in front of that Pokémon.
Victory Road/Ever Grande City - Both really convey the feel of "You're near the end of your grand aventure, all you've done has finally led up to this" and helps you to keep pushing forward, which I think is the best tone to instill for that part of the game :) Ever Grande has that nice, relaxing break in between, letting you breathe a sigh of relief from overcoming the first part of your final challenge. It's beautiful, and I think the flute-ish instrument sounds a bit like the original in itself (at 0:07)

In the end, all of the music contributes to one of my absolute favorite soundtracks in gaming. Bless Masuda and the other composers for making the music in this series so amazing ^^

Mark Kamill January 4th, 2016 5:06 AM

They kept it in tempo and didn't have twi wildly contrasting styles between the OW and Battles, unlike a certain Johto remake. Staying faithf was honestly enough for me, the GBA games and behond have some great music composition, not a lot you can do withiut being too different.

KetsuekiR January 4th, 2016 6:51 AM

Overall, for me, the soundtrack was in the higher end of ones found in games and so I liked it quite a bit. That said, there was one song that made it for me, and I think it's the best soundtrack I've heard in a game to date. That song is Zinnia's Theme. It's so good that I actually went ahead and downloaded it to my phone (very few songs make the cut, mind you).

All in all, I'd give it a solid 5/7.

Zomg, yes.

Zinnia's theme seriously stood out to me. It sounds completely unlike any song I'd expect to hear in a Pokemon game--reminds me of something you'd hear in Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts (I can't be the only one who thinks this). So well put together, and I do love me some strings ^^

The Evil Mewtwo January 6th, 2016 8:06 PM

I like the original Ruby and Sapphire soundtrack better than OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire from some of them.
I like:
Route 119
Route 120
Steven
Zinnia
Deoxys
Elite Four

Qibli January 7th, 2016 4:44 AM

I do really loves Elite Four and Gym Battle music because it was more intense as the battle bit harder and Steven was way more cooler and Zinnia is also interesting. The Villainous theme are OK however.

SilverCrown January 7th, 2016 6:00 AM

The soundtrack is pretty amazing. I got so hyped when Wally's battle theme started.

Sun January 7th, 2016 10:25 PM

Aside from the Trainer battle theme, Surf theme and Wild battle theme. Everything is perfect!

I rate it 8.5/10. (:

And Wally's encounter theme was pretty cool too. In fact, a lot of the new music was more interesting to me. Everything else… sounded more or less like MIDI versions of the stuff from Ruby/Sapphire, and I just so happen to like the low-quality sampling from that better.

The music seemed overall low-budget. I'd listen to X/Y's soundtrack more than OR/AS's.

Aww, but surely you liked the remixed Kyogre/Groudon encounter music? :3 Out of all the remade music, that one definitely seems to stand out since they did something so unique with it.

PlatinumDude January 8th, 2016 8:26 PM

Nostalgia hit me hard upon listening to the OR/AS soundtrack. I couldn't help imagine the original R/S/E soundtrack alongside the OR/AS one.

Adam Levine January 12th, 2016 3:13 AM

ORAS had great soundtrack and it competes with the original. Many things here had their simplicity broken, which made it sound like an actual adventure. The music also got a little more organized and completed.

The originals are also good. Who doesn't love the sound of French horns always being there? The simplicity is also what makes me love it.

In my opinion, both the remakes' and originals' soundtracks are great and evenly weigh each other out.

Hikamaru January 12th, 2016 1:27 PM

I pretty much felt tons of nostalgia as I listened to this soundtrack, which makes sense given I started my Pokemon gaming experience with Hoenn. I did love the revamped Groudon/Kyogre theme, which definitely sounded more epic than the original.

Sopheria January 12th, 2016 4:38 PM

You know, for some reason I didn't quite feel the nostalgia with this one. Probably because I wasn't actually that young when I played it :P Makes me kinda sad to realize my nostalgia pretty much ends at 2nd gen ;;

sirboulevard January 12th, 2016 7:02 PM

ORAS really hit the soundtrack just right. In fact, I think several pieces from ORAS are actually better than the RSE versions. Most notably, Littleroot Town, which just couldn't get the emotional oomph needed from the RSE soundchips. Most of the pieces are faithful and thats what saves them.

That said, there are a couple of pieces where they were outdone.

First is the Gym Leader theme. Here is the one from ORAS.

And here's the version from Pokemon Colosseum and XD, which I feel is superior.

A large chunk of that is due to the Colo/XD version using more instruments and harmonies (specifically using the infamous trumpets in conjunction with strings). Not to mention Tsukasa Tawada improvising some additional flourishes on the pieces like at 0:33 and 0:59.

The other is Mt. Chimney. While I don't dislike it as a fan of Jazz. Its totally wrong tonally for the location. Mt. Chimney was really Team Magma/Aqua's first real act of world changing villainy, setting a trend for a decade and a half of Pokemon enemy teams. It should have been music to invade Poland too, not music to chill in a hipster bar to.

fenyx4 January 26th, 2016 5:43 PM

Unfortunately, I'll have to reserve judgment on the entire soundtrack of Pokemon OmegaRuby/AlphaSapphire (ORAS) in comparison to their Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald (RSE) predecessors, although it seems like some tracks like Zinnia's battle theme and Wally's battle theme have been well-received, so that's good to hear.. Preliminary thoughts on the music (I am not really one who can sufficiently describe music as I would like to, so apologies if some of these remarks don't make much sense :~):

-I really like the booming percussion featured throughout in the "Battle! VS Wild Pokemon (Hoenn)" ORAS arrangement, although I felt that a few "sub-melodies" from the RSE version were lost in the transition.

-I inadvertently heard the remix of the Hoenn Battle Frontier overworld theme ("Battle Resort)", but it sounded decent from the segment that I heard.

-The ORAS arrangement of "Pokemon Main Theme" was inferior to the RSE composition, in my opinion. Even in the early segments of the song, some sub-melodies that you can hear in the RSE version fail to be present in the ORAS version (compare the RSE beautiful melodic trills of 0:13-0:20 to what is supposed to be in the ORAS repetitive segment of 0:13-0:20; so much beautiful melodic diversity lost!) , which dampened my outlook on the whole soundtrack, sorry to say. -_- I mean, it's essentially the first song (and arguably one of the most iconic of Hoenn) of the game.. >_>

-I think that the ORAS version of "Battle! VS Team Magma Grunt/Team Aqua Grunt" removed the tubular bells (sadly, prominently replaced with some...other instrument..it sounds brass-ish), harp (or piano?) thing, and "malevolent-sounding buzzing" in one portion that were arguably iconic (and one of my favorite) components of the original RSE song.. Granted, I haven't heard the whole song, but when my favorite part is seemingly ruined, there doesn't seem like there is much to salvage..

-the ORAS version of "Battle! VS Team Magma Leader/Team Aqua Leader" is probably my greatest disappointment so far..
--While I do like how the ORAS version's introductory segment (percussion of sorts?) has more of a nice-sounding melody to it (not that the original RSE version's introductory notes were bad, so to say), the "secondary" melody that begins seconds later that was comprised of backing brass in the RSE version (either French horns or trumpets; hard to distinguish all of the brass happenings {XD}~_~ - I guess I would call them something like "pumping" brass horns/instruments in the original version, as if valves were getting opened and closed in rapid succession..?) now sounds very weird...as if someone was swishing saliva with one's mouth closed, with visually-unappealing food particles getting sloshed around in their mouth at the same time. {XD}-_-
--Also, the general tempo of the ORAS song (at least from what I can tell) seems to have been (slightly?) reduced, which detracts from the intimidating imposing nature and intensity of the RSE composition.
--The ORAS version's "bass drop", while interesting to hear in terms of placement and decent-sounding, didn't do much for me as it apparently did for other people. {XD}
--Furthermore, the brass after the bass drop sounds really "laborious", as if the brass-instrument players are having a tough time playing the song compared to the seemingly "effortless" brass players of the RSE version (this sensation of "trying hard to play brass instruments" may stem from the reduced tempo/speed of the song..?). I was hoping to hear additional sub-melodies that "built" upon the original composition, kind of like in this fanmade remix. In particularly, I would have loved to hear something like the "piano trills" that begin at 0:14, as well as something that conveys "escalation" like the lovely "step-wise climbing phrase (evocative of the notable '8 escalating notes' in the Team Magma Grunt/Team Aqua Grunt battle theme)" between 0:23 and 0:31 (and even the aforementioned fanmade remix seems to at least maintain a tempo similar to the RSE version of the song - really, that fanmade great remix (up until 0:55; :S) is what I was expecting ORAS to achieve).

-Regarding the ORAS version of "Battle! VS Pokemon Trainer (Hoenn)", I'm sorry, but the synthesizer/synth just sounds horrible/over-produced/unfitting at around 15 seconds in (I think this melody was carried by brass instruments in the RSE version). It's like the song is blatantly trying to tell me "Hey! I'm using a weird synth for the melody! Hope that's okay; thx plox". The subsequent violin didn't sound as powerful as the original RSE brass, in my opinion.. The song does an okay job of keeping the general melody (especially during the "stuff gets serious"/low-sounding part), although the synth that crops up right before the loop point still manages to be annoying, unfortunately..

-I don't want to outright blast the song without even hearing it yet, but I apparently read that the ORAS version of "Battle! VS Elite Four (Hoenn)" took out the RSE version's distinctive clapping sounds, which were another of my favorite sounds.. I'll wait until hearing the whole thing, but there had hopefully be something that is worth the omission of the classic clapping.. :(

-I heard "Pokemon Gym" and "Fortree City (at least one of the remixes)"; these sounded decent, although I think Fortree had way more brass..?

-Whichever remix of "Battle! VS Super-ancient Pokemon" did it, I like the idea of the one that (from what I've read) fades in and out and interspersed the original RSE composition with the ORAS arrangement. A shame that this tidbit was spoiled; I would have loved to discover this musical treat firsthand in the games themselves... :(

Apologies if this post seemed overtly negative... I guess I'm particularly more critical of Hoenn music remixing/rearranging since I've heard a lot of the tunes for so long, as well as since the Hoenn music already had "sounds/melodies" that were defined/refined already.. {XD} Now I see how some Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal fans felt about the Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver (HGSS) arrangements (although, out of the 2 HGSS songs that I've heard so far; both of them were amazing ^_^). The overall ORAS soundfont seems to provide a nice, rich, vibrant sound to some of the original compositions (still on the fence about the soundfont's execution of violin), so at least there's that positive..

blue January 31st, 2016 7:11 AM

I think they did a really good job with the soundtrack, some of the tracks have been recreated perfectly. RSE have some of the best soundtracks of any of the games, but ORAS managed to remix a majority of them to sound just as good!

Alita February 1st, 2016 7:55 AM

I love the new Verdanturf theme, it's a big improvement.
Sky Pillar is amazing, so ominous. ^^ It kind of reminds me of Derris Kharlan from Tales of Symphonia. :D
The Hoenn E4 has my favourite E4 theme, but I slightly prefer the original in RSE.

9/10

Harmonie February 1st, 2016 8:25 AM

I think they did a pretty good job with it. I had no second thoughts about buying it on iTunes right when it was released!

I particularly like that funky sound they went for with Mt. Chimney.

ZoroStar February 1st, 2016 12:54 PM

The ORAS soundtrack is absolutely fantastic.
RSE had my favorite arrangements overall, and if I have to be completely honest,
I was interested in the music before the game itself.

This remake nailed it throughout and I can't be any happier with how it turned out.
