When did you start using the Internet?

When did you start using the Internet? What was the internet like back then for you, compared to now?

For me: used it the first time in 2002.
Starting using it extensively in 2007.
Was off the internet for most of 2010 because I was only on in school. Rip.
Starting using it again in 2010 of September.

Back then, the Internet was a lot different. People were... how do I say this, meaner. Kind of uppity. I definitely remember my early years, when everyone was kid of uptight, and whatnot. The internet got calmer in 2009 for me, but on December 5th, 2009, my computer was taken away from me, so I disappeared from the internet for most of my year when I was 13. I came back towards September 2010, when I started using my parent's computer every day, that was three years, until I got my own computer in 2014. These days... the internet is so different. Tumblr is pretty much everything, and most of the kids there kind of scare me... has it gotten more laid back? I guess, kinda, but not really.

The core of it has changed. Forums are dying. Back in 2007, those were awesome. Now, hit 2016, nine years later, everyone care more about apps and social media. Twitter was new in 2007, and MySpace was probably still popular.

Times have changed.

ive been off and on but cant remember when my parents did and did not have internet the past few years i been paying for the internet myself

noa January 24th, 2016 11:29 PM

2000 when I was 8. I've been on the internet for a very long time. It was a simpler 'net back then... And a lot more dangerous pre-adblock, lol. I got so many viruses on my computer.
The first sites I frequented were of course Neopets, Kirby's Rainbow Resort and various Pokemon sites, good times.

2008 for me, when I was in Middle school, but I started actively using it around 2010 (High School). I still remembered back then (2008 I mean) we used it just to download some pictures and getting study materials from Wikipedia and other educational sites, mostly because the textbooks we received weren't detailed enough.

Harmonie January 25th, 2016 2:24 AM

Hard for me to say when I first used it. I knew I was actively using it when Pokemon Gold/Silver were released in Japan, because I remember looking at the Pokedex entries in Japanese online. So 1999/2000 at least.

I wasn't allowed to use forums until 2003, though. Even then my parents were reluctant. I didn't become super-active on forums until late 2004, though.

2007 back then We have finally have an offer to get cheaper internet package for 1mbps at rate of rm 110 per month. For me the first time I have touched the world of Internet during 7 years old is extremely awesome. It's like exploring the unlimited space of the other world. And that time I started playing online games and the first one was Ragnarok and Call Of Duty 4 ( lolololololol )

I'm not sure exactly, but I feel like it may have been my early teens. Again, I'm not really sure so I can't really vote in the pole since I don't remember. :c

dad January 25th, 2016 6:55 PM

maybe around 2005, we had typing class back in elementary. i might've started actively using it around 2008/2009?

Tsutarja January 25th, 2016 7:30 PM

2004 was probably my earliest recollection of going online. I remember visiting various sites like Serebii, Psypokes, and even IGN to read up about Pokémon stuff and if it wasn't for that I wouldn't have known about the release of FireRed and LeafGreen. XD

I remember AskJeeves as I used to use that site all the time before Google, lol. Good times.

I think it's around 2002 or 2003 was when I first started using the internet as I remember starting looking up sites for projects during middle school. It wasn't until perhaps over a year later my family got home internet.

Skip Class January 25th, 2016 11:11 PM

Either 2000 or 2001 when I was around 6 or 7 because neopets was the love of my life.

Early January 27th, 2016 10:46 PM

It's hard to say, but definitely some time around 2004; we had one desktop computer at home, so we had to share it. I started using the web consistently when I got my first laptop for Christmas in 2010, and started using it for things other than playing games once I discovered forums.

Pebbles January 28th, 2016 9:01 AM

probably when i was around 11/12 or so
so that is....2004

i was very young when i already owned a fansite about my fav tv show haha
charmed!

Electricbluewolf January 28th, 2016 11:17 AM

Probably around 11/12 years ago, my brother showed me a video of little clay men, I still remember one part had the lyrics of "Macaroni, Macaroni, Macaroni, Macaroni, put the cheese in the noodles and what do you get?
No idea if it's from that many years ago but that's my first memory of it

Syssareth January 28th, 2016 10:04 PM

I'm not entirely sure. I was about 6-7, I think, so '96-'97? And I'm pretty sure my first hands-on internet experience was through AOL Kids, or whatever it was called. It sucked. :P

And then when I was 8-ish I upgraded to the real internet and discovered Neopets. It all went downhill from there. {XD}

Bounsweet January 28th, 2016 10:36 PM

I started using it regularly when I was about 8-9 so in 2002ish, because I remember spending a lot of time on the Pokemon website and Neopets then. I didn't really have a break period between when I first started to use it and when I started to use it extensively, I was pretty into it from day one lol. I remember sitting and waiting literally 5-10 minutes for each page to load when I'd look up Pokemon on the official website's PokeDex q_q

mondays suck February 23rd, 2016 8:46 AM

Got a DSL connection in 2006, I believe. Had a modem one a few years (2-3?) before that, but it was so slow and expensive to use, it never saw much use.

Apollo February 23rd, 2016 10:53 AM

I was a huge animal nerd back then - I remember searching for stuff and games about animals. I think that was around 2005-2008. The internet never really played a big role in my early pre-school years. I became hooked at 2011 when I had my "omg so random xD" phase, which can be seen in one of my earlier posts on my older accounts.

Savashy February 23rd, 2016 11:07 AM

i think it would be around 2005-6. i was a young lad back then.

killer-curry February 25th, 2016 1:10 AM

Do eventually 2007 is the most intensive uses of Internet.

Brendino February 25th, 2016 3:15 AM

I definitely remember using the internet in some form back in 3rd grade (which would've been 2000), but I also remember using school computers before that- I just don't know if I used the internet or not.

Then we got a computer with Windows XP shortly after it came out (I wanna say late 2001/early 2002), and one of the first things we did was sign up for our free trial of AOL, haha. And I've been glued to the internet ever since then.

Substitute Doll February 25th, 2016 1:40 PM

for me, 2003
my parents made me do preschool things when I was in 1st grade, and the internet was the way to do it.

Palkia February 26th, 2016 1:10 PM

I started using it about 2008 to watch mainly youtube videos, but I started joining forums a year later. Fast forward 8 years later and I'm still mainly a youtube user and only go on a couple social networks (Facebook, PC) and just lurk some other places.

Cherrim February 26th, 2016 2:19 PM

I used it a few times in 1997/1998 but I wasn't a fan because I didn't like the dial-up noise because it was so loud and... I remember looking up Sailor Moon info once and the fansite was based on the Japanese version so it was confusing and made no sense to me so I got angry LOL.

I started using the internet for real in 2000 and I've pretty much been addicted ever since, lol. First I got into Neopets and then in late 2000 or early 2001, I discovered Pokemon forums aaand I suppose the rest is history.

I think the best difference I can think of is that tumblr post that goes: "I used to worry about people from the internet finding me in real life but now I worry about people in real life finding me on the internet."

Lipstick Vogue March 7th, 2016 7:01 AM

Early 00s for school stuff and occasionally playing flash games at home. Our home pc was awful and so full of viruses that I didn't bother using it much.

Mid 00s was when I really started using it. Got my own laptop and haven't logged off since.

Taemin March 9th, 2016 5:11 PM

Hmmm... 2000. I'm sure I used it a little bit in 1999, but not very often. Probably small internet searches and I didn't really know what I was doing. 2000 - 2001 was when I started using it for fansites and fandom things.

Eden March 10th, 2016 1:54 AM

2002 just to go on sites to play games. I didn't start going on message boards until 2005 back when the NSider Forums were still remotely relevant.

JJ Styles March 10th, 2016 6:23 AM

I remember in 1999... and unfortunately the first thing i heard from the older guys or those who already had internet access were telling me that's where you can get the "good stuff", and by good stuff, they meant NSFW.

Oops.

Sheep March 10th, 2016 7:24 PM

Around 2000 during the good days of Neopets and taking care of my precious Shoyru and Zafara. Didn't start using it more seriously until 2002-2003 though when I'd actually spend at least a few hours browsing websites and, again, taking care of my precious virtual pets.

I remember the good times of trying to sneak online at 12am in 2004 but the dial-up sound woke my parents and they'd unplug the net. Barely got them to give me their old 1998 computer to keep in my room. D: lol

Firox March 10th, 2016 9:17 PM

Early 2001 for me, was the earliest I remember using the internet, can't remember exactly what I did back then. Do remember using for football related news

ShinyUmbreon189 March 11th, 2016 3:07 PM

To be honest I'm not even sure when I started using the internet. I'm 24, I'm getting old.. You expect me to remember the year I started using the internet? jk. If I were to guess it would be like 2nd maybe 3rd grade?

Jetfire March 11th, 2016 6:06 PM

Woow, I feel old lol.

I started using the internet around 1996. My dad brought home a desktop with a tower that probably weighed as much as a cinderblock.

I'm one of the few who remember Dial-Up lol. At the time, I used to play competitive chess on the MSN Gaming Zone. I was part of a league and everything. #Boss

Morgnarok March 23rd, 2016 11:22 AM

I started using a computer and internet in 1999 on a Hotwheels Windows 98 PC(Link Below)

Starry Windy March 24th, 2016 5:36 AM

I don't quite remember when I started to browsing through internet (probs around 2000's), but I still remember when my relatives want to invite me to internet cafe, and I was browsing some sites and bringing my floppy disk with me.

Since then, I started to surf in internet cafe every month under permission of my parents, and I started to become somewhat of a download holic in these days. Many years later, I managed to get the USB modem that I can browse when I wanted to, even though I have to limit the usage due to quota limitations, and it's not becoming my issue anymore once I switched to Wi-Fi connection.

I must say, compared to back then, I have no idea internet become this vast, and becoming much more accessible to everyone than it was in the years back.

Guest123_x1 March 24th, 2016 7:43 PM

I started using the Internet for the first time probably in 2000, at an aunt's house by using AOL. It was quite an interesting experience, but at the same time, I was nervous that I might end up somewhere I shouldn't be.
I started going online a bit more starting in late 2001, when I was in 8th Grade, where my school district had implemented massive technology upgrades as part of a bond issue passed the previous year, usually at school after I was finished with my work.
Finally, in March 2002, a neighbor installed a phone jack near my computer, and signed me up for NetZero, meaning I could finally get online at home. By then, I was starting to get used to using the Internet, but even then, I would make the occasional misstep. During my earliest years of being online at home, I mainly browsed Pokémon fan sites, as well as software sites. I started to do message boards in late 2004, but things were a lot different even then as compared to now.

Even these days, I primarily use the Internet via desktop and laptop PCs, but eventually, I'll be considered the "odd man out" as everybody is switching to do online stuff exclusively through smartphones (I have done smartphone internet a few times, and trust me, it's very difficult to handle. No one will ever convince me that mobile/smartphone web browsing is "superior".)
