Eh, honestly, I don't think the place has changed drastically during my time here. I've managed to take long hiatuses (some planned, some not), and come back and re-integrate myself just fine. Members have came and went, but it happens on every forum; but the core elements of this place have remained pretty consistent throughout.

MoonLight January 30th, 2016 10:12 AM

Ok well I joined way back in 2002 that's like 14 years ago. Forums were pretty new back then
I never really had any bad experience back then. I was a good girl lol I do remember lots of things that happened through the years . Yes we did have some drama at some points But to me I always enjoyed this place and I always will. (and I have never changed my name lol ) :)

MoonLight! I feel like your sig hasn't changed either since back then.

MoonLight January 30th, 2016 10:29 AM

Lol yeah I know that I made that a very long time ago , keep things the same for now

JustinRPG was erm... interesting haha. My PokeCommunity experience was never the same again after his days of PC xD

let's just say Treehouse is the embodiment of everything PC enforced rules against ~4 years ago.

esperance January 31st, 2016 5:54 PM

I joined in 2010 for ROM hacking and it has seriously changed since then. Teams used to be such a big deal and now we have the whole Beginner's Lounge which wasn't a thing until like last year iirc, and there was that old ROM hacking ideas subforum way back then, before even 2010 I think. Hackers back then were all very serious business but that attitude seems to have really relaxed these days, which is always nice.

I became a supporter back when we were organized by numbers and got rank one by donating one dollar. Takes a bit more these days to get the benefits. :P

And one other random thing that I remember was the social groups that were linked from user profiles. Those were um... something. Yeah.

People like ShadowE, Mika, Fernbutter, and a bunch of other people who aren't active here anymore, I spoke to them literally every day, sometimes for hours at a time. It's really a shame most of them left because they all played a major part in shaping my experience here.

This speaks for me as well. To me, it's a bit, well, painful, when you notice when someone wasn't active anymore, regardless whether you knew them personally or not. It's inevitable that people eventually leave the forum and it makes me think about how transitory life is. The fact that the community changes over time makes it harder for me to feel like belong, since that which I identify with is constantly eroded with each passing day. I wonder if anybody else has ever felt that way, and if so, how they get over that feeling.

Kanzler January 31st, 2016 9:43 PM

@flight First of all, I'm so happy that someone else can speak to how I'm feeling. Personally, it's a bit uncomfortable to think about. I can empathize with your experiences, but perhaps not so much with making new friends since I guess I haven't really.

I can't bring past friends back here; it's time to make new ones until the cycle repeats itself. Thankfully, I've got more than one way to contact really close friends of mine outside of PC, so if by any chance they leave, they won't be out of my life, if it comes to that.

Does that not upset you? The realization that the cycle is, for all intents and purposes, inescapable makes anything I might do about it seem futile. There's no easy way to square the circle.

I think I agree with your realization that a lot of people might come here to distract themselves or escape from IRL stuff. That's definitely true for me to some extent. It's not the nicest thing to think about, but it makes sense. Now that I think about it, some of the people I used to hang with and aren't around so much anymore have a lot going for them IRL and I can't help but feel happy for them. I feel like our experiences on PC will eternally be tinged by melancholy and bittersweet.

Kairi February 1st, 2016 6:42 AM

12 or 13 years ago, it really was possible to know everyone on the forum. And I did! And I made it my job to read every single post on the site. That burned me out fast, but I learned a lot about myself in the process, too.

In fact, I think that's what was best for me about PC. I got to hash out so much of who I was in a pretty safe environment, and I avoided pitfalls later in life.

It was a lot less refined than now; it was almost like a chatroom. I think it reflected how young everyone involved was.

Change isn't always a bad thing. Do you really want old folks like us to make PC exactly the same as 13 years ago? Like for starters, 2003 we were working on a better slogan cause it was an inside joke for even older veterans than me, and finally I see that now we gave up on a slogan as the old folks who understand the joke are no longer here (at least, not as active).

Everyone will really recall the time of their own highest activity to be the "best that PC has ever been" personally. It's really best to accept that it's time to move on and let the youngsters have their moment too.

Also, we weren't *that* laid back... others have mentioned how we're lot stricter in this thread, and I remember that half of my modding duties involve reporting signature sizes and double posting lol. Our potatoes back then were not the same, you know!

Pretty much this: PC is like any other place where you meet people. Think of it like school. You'll graduate and everyone scatter to different places, but if you put in effort to keep in contact with them, you'll still be friends with some of your classmates. You'll also lose contact with a lot of them, but the ones you've kept by your side are possibly friends for life. Even if you lost contact with them or hardly chatted with them in PC, you never know what the future has in store for you.

I left PC in 2004, but I kept in contact with Oni_Flygon and Lilypichu (the same one who does voice acting and LoL youtube vids/LoL streamer) since then. I met 22sa in real life as we turn out to be from the same town, so we hung out in 2005-2006. I hardly chatted with Lightning/Cherrim when I was in PC, but magically we became good friends on twitter too in 10 years later in 2014 for some reason. Then I end up meeting newer PC members like TeamFail via these connections too, and he's the one who told me to come back for a revival visit from the grave for this thread.

Of course, I also met Haruka-chan/Kairi in PC as well~ You are still probably the most life defining person that I've encountered in my life. I'm really grateful to have met you through PC here. In a thread about reminiscing the old PC, we can't possibly recount history and dig up dirt about the pass without this link about you, right? http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Staff+Administrator&defid=1002897

Frostweaver February 2nd, 2016 6:14 PM

I think that even in my stay since 2003, Kwesi showed up maybe 5 times... you are dreaming a little too hard there on that one lol.

Astinus February 2nd, 2016 9:40 PM

I definitely agree with those who have said that PC had a much harsher environment back then than it does now. Getting picked on because of a simple mistake was the reason why I took a hiatus for a few months from here, and when I returned, I became a writing section hermit.

These days, there does seem to be a missing feeling of friendship here. While I do know more people here now and more people know me (if that's just because of my orange name), I don't really know people on the same level. There's not a lot of people here that I talk to on a daily basis, or in the same manner where we have long conversations. I think because we're--or at least I am--older now and not so attached to PC.

Staff is definitely friendlier. The current staff seems like they're willing to listen to the members' problems and help the community, rather than ignoring someone just because they're a regular member.

Mostly, I remember just how fractured PC was. The forum wasn't a big community of people. It was a collection of little communities. You had the manga fans, the writing group, the RPers, the Member Fanclubs group, the OVP posters, etc. Very rarely was there someone who floated around to the various sections and posted. These days, a lot of members post around in various sections, making PC far more of a bigger community than it was.

Treecko February 3rd, 2016 4:54 AM

I have only been here since 2012 , so the most major changes have been changes in forum titles. I remember when I joined, The Treehouse was called Other Voting Polls and it was way more lenient in the type of discussion allowed than it is now. Then there was Other Trivia, Other Clubs, and Other Chat & Discussion. God, the redundancy in those names makes me cry. I remember when posts in The Playground/Other Trivia didn't go towards your post count, and that section not getting that much traffic cause of that. Many of the places that were forums back then are now just sub-forums. Anime & Manga was Japanese Entertainment. I remember at one point Anime & Manga and Culture &Media were merged was on whole forum called General Entertainment. Then Anime & Manga became a sub-forum, and now it's back to being a separate forum. Really the only changed since 2012 are forum names and forums becoming sub-forums. Back when I joined, signatures and themes were a much bigger deal. People would spend hours making signatures and icons and would have set periods of times for how long they'd have said theme. Now people don't really put effort into signatures. Like me, I just find a gif off tumblr and use the same old links I've always used haha.

Sun February 3rd, 2016 10:28 PM

The numbers, oh my gosh.

Nowadays, I don't think there's a thread that can surpass any of those numbers due to the various social medias, messenger apps, etc. etc.

Back in the days we were (mainly) limited to ICQ, MSN, AOL, YM and forums. XD Hopefully PC is still here with us for many many years to come. (:

MY LIFE. Oh man, back when DCCs were crazy, I never figured out how to quote multiple people in one response, so I would awkwardly just refer to them by name in my post and hope they saw it. And yep, by time I would post, I would be so behind that everyone was already on a new topic (and a new page)/

Having to keep up with both this and group chats on MSN, my typing speed was whipped into shape :'D

acatfrommars February 4th, 2016 6:44 PM

Honestly, I think this place will be more active than ever (well since I've been a member) if e get a new announcement in March/April. Even since the time that I've come back it seems that activity has increased.

Also, maybe we should try having a DCC again. :p

Treecko February 5th, 2016 2:52 PM

And I thought the DCC was active when I joined...Jesus is that 1 million views?? Dear lord. I think what's caused me to not be active is a lack of DCC and also a lack of active members I was friends with. The friends I had here is why i kept coming back. I miss that.

Hikamaru February 5th, 2016 3:02 PM

Ah yes it's sad to see Treehouse DCC's are now becoming a thing of the past, and we all have the current leaders to blame. It's also weird getting used to Pokemon gaming sections without a catch-all Q&A thread, instead we're now limited to creating new threads if we have questions. Not the case for XY and ORAS though, likely because they're current generation.

Back in my day, the staff weren't as friendly. Or at least most of them. I remember how many bad run-ins I had with some now former mods.

Sammi February 5th, 2016 9:05 PM

My younger PC days are getting fuzzy. That's probably a good thing. I remember being too obsessed about being a mod, and being on staff, and being in that clique... even though I felt like I was outside of the clique I wanted to be in, haha.
It's strange to me that y'all say staff was a lot meaner. Maybe it was because I was one of the nicer ones? ...was I one of the nicer ones? does anyone even remember me anymore if you're not following me on Twitter? .___.
Then I remember how HQ could be and yeah it could get pretty heated. Or even in the mod sections, where there were some not-very-nice threads. And I participated in those threads because tee hee aren't some members just stupid? Siiiiiigh.

I was quite obsessed with Other Voting Polls. It was my baby because... I don't even know why tbh. Maybe it was because I could post and not think too hard about things. For years, it was All Polls, All The Time, and that's all I wanted from it.
My kneejerk reaction when it changed names and started going in Treehouse's current direction was It Changed, Now It Sucks. Then I realized that things change and that's a good thing! Y'all can probably get to know each other better and have more fun if staff is not breathing down your necks going YOU CAN'T TALK IN A POLL THREAD!! which probably happened too often back in my day.
That was also around the time where mods were expected to be more positive influences to their sections and be more than just a glorified janitor. I'm not much of an ideas person and I was only mod by that point for the perks so I left. It was best for everyone.

Old PC meant a lot to me as a teenager. It was my only source of socializing outside of school. I met a ton of cool people and got into stupid fights and cared about stupid staff positions too much but I don't even care. I was super invested -- maybe too much so -- but I had fun doing it. But it's a little hard to see older members be successful in real life now when I'm not successful at all due to my own mistakes. ^^;

I don't come around anymore because I replaced my PC addiction with a Reddit addiction. D: Wish I could say I moved onto ~bigger and better things~ but not really. It's just that my current gaming interests are easier to talk about on Reddit for whatever reason.
Every once in awhile I see PC linked over there -- usually because of ROM hacks and Pokemon fan games -- but every time I am, I'm like "hell yeah, PC!!" I'm proud of this forum even now. :')

Also: I like that PC has a Twitter account! I don't visit the forum but I at least know y'all are still alive and kicking and having fun as always. That's actually why I logged on. I saw this thread get linked and went "I have opinions on that!!" and came to visit Treehouse to see what's up.

I'm sorry I ended up rambling there.

Mewthree w/armor. The epitome of what was wrong with the site admin system. Here is how he reacted to when the title was removed.

A few months ago I ended up running into some old downloads from our MSN conversations and saw some really awful **** he said about some of the admins he hated. And I was like "...I put up with this guy why??"

The answer is leaks. Sweet, sweet leaks. Does anyone even care about staff leaks anymore? Please tell me no.

I'm glad people can't suddenly gain an admin position on PC because of a site and not fit in with the rest of the staff. Or that great staffers aren't restricted from being admins because of those silly rules. PC as a whole has definitely changed for the better.

I remember you! And you were definitely one of the nicer staff members back in the day. You were so welcoming and friendly to me when I first became a mod, which did help me settle into the new role.

I too miss the days of the popular DCCs. Even though I never posted in them, they were fun to read through because there was always something going on.

Tsutarja February 6th, 2016 7:18 PM

Good gosh, back in my day, it was a think for 90% of the members here to display their PC family in their signature, which is not something I see too much of anymore. Oh, and back in my heyday, HeartGold & SoulSilver was its own section, too.

I always loved the unpredictable nature of DCCs. That was why so many people came here back in the day. Nowadays the poor DCC is confined to the VIP Forums so it's now limited to less people than it used to.
