Well the past few days have been disheartening. Over the past year there had been a chorus of warnings that Donald Trump was harnessing the dark underbelly of American history which could lead to violence. Alas, it has come true yesterday, right smack in front of national television. Not to mention the cries of alarm from overseas.

I know that I try to brush off the hush tones of civil unrest that are being discussed, but it seems that we are experiencing the late 1960's or even the 1850's yet again.

Worse part is, there is still Ted Cruz circling around like a vulture waiting to swoop in.

Rachel Maddow & her team did a good job of detailing just how Trump is culpable and how it did not get this way out of coincidence.

Honestly, I'm glad all these protesters came out and I'm not shocked in the slightest that he had to cancel over safety concerns. Why he thought he could come to Chicago of all places, and not have this situation happen is beyond me. It is so sad though, that it had to get violent.

I feel like the more polarized American politics get, the more often this is going to happen. Politicians are only looking to advance their party, rather than amicable solutions. The more polarized we get, the more extreme our candidates become, it's kind of scary to watch. I can see 2020 being even worse, tbh. I don't think Kanye will back out of his claim and his followers will happily oblige him. He'll end up being the liberal Trump of the next election.

Back to the protest though, this is what happens when a man who asks for violence finally gets what he wants.

It's disgusting. He asks for violence, gets it, and then blames it on the people he has been stereotyping and dehumanizing. The worst part? He doesn't think he's doing anything wrong.

Her March 12th, 2016 7:15 PM

Oh, I think he's well aware of what he's doing. It's simply that right & wrong mean nothing to someone who is the demagogue's demagogue. Why would he care about if it's wrong if it gets in the way of stirring up radicalised supporters for his benefit? Trump getting this far partly has to do with our huge underestimation of him at the beginning of the campaign trail, as much as everything else that has been documented throughly throughout this thread. Underestimating him when he is now all but assured the nomination only strengthens him.

I really don't mean to sound like a downer. I really don't. And I know lots of people like to sound like downers during Presidential election periods.

But I now truly believe this is the beginning of the end.

Klippy March 13th, 2016 3:04 AM

Kinda feeling the same vibes as Carchar. Really, really hating this political cycle. Between Clinton's lies, Trump's lunacy, Cruz's ideology, and Rubio's corporatism, I fear for America.

Bernie is the only sensible choice left and the entire corporate media and national party he's involved with is making it hard to see a nomination for him possible. Especially if young people don't turn out to vote. Tuesday will be a huge teller for the future of Bernie. I'm legitimately afraid about this election.

The trump rally you are talking about were fulled with Sanders supporters trying to make Trump look like hitter. People have even found proof of that being the case for a whole bunch of people.

Netto Azure March 13th, 2016 3:28 PM

Sure there were Sanders supporters protesting, but from what I read it was a diverse group of protesters from ones who saw it on Facebook and went there to actual student organizations on the University of Illinois in Chicago (the venue) which was home to many minorities and lower income students.

Now I don't know why he chose that venue in the first place but considering the rhetoric around his campaign and the relatively negative atmosphere towards protests certainly doesn't help the situation. I mean for months Trump has denigrated protestors and has said some remarks on how people "don't want to hurt each other anymore."

To quote the article:

Chicago protest: Newton’s Third Law is starting to kick in—for each action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Only the beginning.

Hey, do any of you guys remember when "grassroots" was such a big buzzword back in 2008 as a descriptor for Obama's campaign? I don't really see it being used for Sanders' campaign today.

Probably because most of Sanders' supporters are easily denigrated as 'internet warriors' and it's more advantageous to represent his campaign as something supported by the naive than a more glowing term like 'grassroots'.

Didn't you hear? Ted Cruz's campaign is grassroots.

He wants to make weed legal so that isn't much of a insult.

Kanzler March 14th, 2016 8:51 AM

Tomorrow's going to be a big day for the primaries, so if you live in Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, Missouri or Illinois, go out and vote. It's your political right and duty as Americans. Personally, I'd tell you to vote for Sanders and I could talk all day about it, but the most important thing is to get out and vote!

Super Tuesday v2.0 for Republicans and Democrats are tomorrow on Tuesday, March 15 2016.

Polls close at 7:00PM in Florida, Illinois and Missouri, 7:30PM in Ohio and North Carolina.

Also, uh, don't forget your ID so they can't turn you away.

New discussion topic(s):

Have you voted in the primaries yet? Have you planned to vote in an upcoming primary? Is this your first time voting or have you voted before? Has this election cycle changed your thoughts on the political process? Will you be voting in the general election?

Klippy March 14th, 2016 1:24 PM

Please do go and vote, folks. Unarguably who you vote for matters, but more importantly is that people are active and engaged in the political process. Voting for someone is better than not voting at all for long term health of the nation.

Have you planned to vote in an upcoming primary? California is a long ways away, but I'll be there.

Is this your first time voting or have you voted before? This will only be my second presidential primary to vote in, having been eligible to vote in 2012's. I've voted, though, in all local/state/midterm elections, including 2010 and 2014.

Has this election cycle changed your thoughts on the political process? Very much so. I was pessimistic about politics prior to this, believing the Democratic and Republican Parties really didn't represent me much, but I basically had to resign to choosing one or the other despite them being two arms of the same machine. Since Bernie and Trump have risen to the spotlight, I feel extremely disheartened and afraid for the coming presidential term. I really don't think I've ever felt so uncomfortable with the choices being given. Especially if it's Clinton versus Trump. It won't stop me from voting because it's too important to me. I've following every election since Bush in 2000, staying up past midnight some elections just to watch results come in.

Will you be voting in the general election?
Yes, but only happily, I think, if Bernie is a choice, despite being a registered Republican (which may soon change. I may go independent).

Neil Peart March 14th, 2016 1:32 PM

It irks me when people say "I'm not voting because so-and-so blah blah"

VOTE

Especially those of you who want Trump gone, and ESPECIALLY those of you who talk about the political revolution with Bernie. As Bernie says, republicans win when there's a high voter turnout.

Nah March 14th, 2016 2:14 PM

Idk why we just don't have everyone vote on the same day or even week for the primaries really. What's the point in spreading it out so much? Here in New Jersey we have to wait until June iirc to vote in the primaries.

$$$

Primaries, remember, are hosted by the parties themselves. All of this is a game to them for profit and it's why both parties hate Trump and Sanders because they are destroying the established rules.

Sanders just mis-identified a question-asker at the townhall as Muslim when he was Hindu. Is this a big gaffe?

Eh, I think it comes off as an honest mistake.
On a political scale I don't think it'll matter much at all, particularly when there are much more outrageous statements for the media to gather ratings from.

Did he identify himself as Hindu? I don't think it'll be a huge deal unless Clinton/MSM make it a big deal. I've seen worse gaffes before.

Nah, she didn't touch on it. We'll see if MSM blows it up tomorrow.

What did you guys think of the townhalls, if you watched it? IMO Sanders got a tough line of questioning for his, which I'm not sure is if how townhalls are "supposed" to go. Clinton got a lot of questioning on the Iraq War, but otherwise I felt like her moderator was a lot nicer to her.

Is that appropriate for a moderator to say to a candidate?

God no.
Moderators should work their asses off to not show any bias they might have, not add support to a campaign.

Klippy March 15th, 2016 2:38 AM

In a few hours, polls will open and begin what is arguably one of the most important primary days. Kanzler's already posted some info, but let's hope for the best. GOTV if you're in a state voting.

Polls close at 7:00PM in Florida, Illinois and Missouri, 7:30PM in Ohio and North Carolina. Don't be late!

Ohioan, John Kasich. Anyone but Donald Trump. It's a shame Rubio is such a disaster that he probably won't win his home state.
