Conventions
Have you ever been to an anime/comic book convention? Share stories!
I've never been but thought about going. I especially would like to go to Comic-Con sometime. Idk who I'd dress up, probably as the Hulk. ^^ |
While I have never been to any conventions, there are few conventions that I would like to go to in my state.
The ones I am interested in going to are: Sakura Con Emerald City Comic-Con Brick Con PAX Prime Aki Con |
I've been to Armageddon Expo (Nerd/ Pop-culture convention) in my city for around about 7 years now and this upcoming one will be my 8th year going.
Went to Anime Expo when I visited LA in 2012 and I also went to Vidcon the month right before that (but that's a Youtube convention). I did have plans to travel to PAX Aus last year, but I've had to postpone it for reasons - I do still plan on going but that's probably not gonna happen for the next 3 years at least. Planning my trip to Japan next year and I may or may not be in the country for Anime Japan Fair (however not counting on it since I might be going in Jul-Aug or September instead of March when it is). Also may be NY Comic Con since I've been talking to family about traveling to NY - but that's far from anything solid. Aside from that, there are things close to home that I would love to go to: Armageddon Expo Auckland, Overload NZ and NZ Akiba-con are all in NZ but far up north. |
I've been to 3 different conventions. I went to Meta Con back in 2012 as my first ever convention. The next year I went to AniMinneapolis, my second ever convention, and much larger than Meta Con. And these past two years, I've gone to Anime Detour, which is slightly larger than AniMinneapolis, but also a much better experience. I will actually be attending Anime Detour again this April.
I'm eyeing larger conventions in other cities like Otakon, ACen, Anime Midwest, Anime Expo, Otakon, and one of the 3 American PAXs for future trips, but I've gotta pick where, when, and who I'm going with. Those are all quite far away from me, with the closest being ACen and Anime Midwest in Chicago. For most people, I thinking going at least twice is a worthwhile experience, with your first being getting used to being at one, and the second for using what you learned about being at one at the first one to make the experience better. |
I went to uh, Bronycon in the summer 2012. Back in my bronies day. It was a nice time, and it sucks that all the people I used to talk to pretty much abandoned ship with me from this brony thing. I try to get into contact with the few I had more memories with but meh, past is the past

Haven't posted here since Christmas.
Let's talk Comiket. I was staying at a hotel in Toyocho, about 4km away from Shin-Kiba station (takes you straight to Kokusai-tenjijo station, immediately north of Tokyo Big Sight). Woke up at 3 am that morning. oops, forgot my bus card. oops, my bills are all 10k yen. guess I'll run to the station. oops, today's really ****ing hot. oops, 1 bottle of pocari sweat isn't enough for me to run that far in the Tokyo summer heat. oops, crossed the wrong bridge. industrial area has almost no crosswalks. giant u-turns. finally get to Shin-Kiba. oops, forgot to BUY MORE WATER AT SHIN-KIBA oops, con buddy lost his reception and now we're separated. get on metro. A/C is freezing cold and I love it. was nice while it lasted. back to the frying pan. I finally get to Big Sight at 9:00 am. after a lot more walking, it's 9:30 am and I'm waiting in the secondary superlot (each superlot contains several hundred 10x10 lots aka centuries). oops, didn't bring a fan. I'm surrounded by fat, sweaty otaku and weeaboos. I'm really sweaty so I try changing my clothes discreetly. doesn't work, I get groped by about three or four guys. it's 10:00 am and the doors are open. it's 11:40 am and finally my century is let inside. oops, totally forgot to preplan my route. walking through this human tidal wave is sweaty and not fun. oops, walked right past ZUN and didn't shake his hand. oops, yukari scroll doesn't fit inside shipping box. I have no idea how I'm going to bring all this stuff back to the US. on my way back to Kokuten, I see a dude doing stunts with yo-yos, hoops, and sticks. I stop to watch and take a video. oops, phone out of battery. now I can't call my bro to drive me home. oops, I haven't eaten anything since breakfast. oops, I'm really tired. oops, my legs are giving out. luckily, I know that I'm staying roughly to the north. sky is getting dark. road signs are bae. I get back to the hotel. I have 693 yen on my person. (6 USD) enter elevator. pass out. get carried back to my room. good times. |
I go to anime conventions typically twice a year. I have friends that go to four or five, but I can't travel to some of the ones they go to. Can't be that hardcore. We all usually cosplay, sometimes different series, and sometimes group cosplay. There's about six of us planning a Soul Eater group for a con that's happening next year, already.
Its really fun to stay a hotel during the cons, because it makes it more exciting, but this year I think I'll just be staying at home, and commuting back and forth cause it's cheaper. We got to Naka Kon, that is now so big that takes a convention center to hold everyone. The other is Motaku, and sometimes Ahn!Con (yaoi), and those take place in hotels since they're still somewhat small. I've only been going since I started college, so all in all, I didn't start as early as some with all of this, but it's pretty fun, and I don't think any of us plan to quit any time soon. |
I've been to San Japan in 2011, cosplayed there-- it was a pretty crappy con ngl, though I hear it's improved since then? In any case, it wasn't worth it.
Then I went to the Haikyuu only event IDLING ATTACKER in 2014, which was... interesting? I guess? It turned out to be a mish mash of -insert series name- Only events, and they all shared the costs of getting the Tokyo Big Sight location. I think the one in Fall 2014 had Free!, SNK, Jojo, and Haikyuu all together-- got a bunch of cute goodies like magnets and clear files but, true to Japanese fashion, it was like 99% doujin which was a huge let down. Then finally I went to AX 2015, which was AMAZING because I a) Got my pass for free since my friend was a translator and she gave me her 1 free pass and b) didn't actually see any part of AX besides the Artist Alley, which was easily the only thing I needed to see. I loved loved loved the AX Artist Alley, partially because literally all of my friends are there (from all over the world), but also because we're all tabling, so we're just sitting behind the tables trading prints and buttons. I got so many beautiful prints for free, and got to hang out with some really amazing people. And I also swiped a bunch of my tablemates' leftover prints/buttons/charms, so that was great too. I also really like trying to get people to buy stuff, so it was fun being a saleswoman. Quote:

I hear it's like all doujin and I'm not even into doujin so I'm not sure if it's worth the suffering LOL |
I haven't been to conventions for a good while now. I haven't been to the Anime Festival Asia Indonesia (AFAID) since 2014, and I'm not sure I'll have the time this year. In fact, I think this year will be void of conventions due to the lack of time on my hands.
Comifuro I still attend, but most of the time I know only half the fandoms on the fandom booths. I tend to browse through the original stuff, even though in the end I never wasted that much money haha. I just go commission hunting. xP |

Spoiler:
I too had never heard of it since I haven't really paid much attention to cons outside of NZ,Aus and the big American ones. Apparently its one of the bigger animation conventions since it pulls in a lot of TV and film studios and production companies - it's only just been opened up to the public since I think it used to be just an industry event prior. |
I've been to two. One of them was this awful, disorganized brony convention that we ended up leaving after one day. As vendors. Due to lack of sales (barely anyone was selling things) and lack of really... much of anything to do. This was my first experience with conventions and it was quite negative.
The other one was an anime convention. We hung up our vendor hats and went to a much better, well-established place. It was loads of fun, and I even cosplayed for the first time. I loved it and felt like it was a place in real life where people actually talked about things I knew of and cared about. Was so sad to leave. But we're planning on going to another convention again... provided my fiance can get those days off. To save money, we're just going to do some quick Star Trek cosplay. I'm totally getting a Bajoran earring. I love them. <3 |
Been to like 17 conventions and I have outgrown them, a bunch of hyperactive pocky eating 14-16 year olds who get drunk on coca cola and praise yaoi and then the group of 20 + who still think they're 14 and squeels over yaoi and hypers over something pink.

Then again, I did only start attending back in 2012, so that was well after most conventions and their host hotels figured out how to get attendees to rein in problem behaviors that they weren't even aware people didn't have the common sense to restrain when anime conventions started popping up everywhere 10 to 15 years ago. ... though I do generally just go to peruse the merchant stalls, attend a couple panels, and hang out with friends at various places. |
I go to this anime convention called Saboten every year. :3 So far, I've met Troy Baker, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn (twice), Vic Mignogna, Steve Blum, Chuck Huber, Derek Stephen Prince, Ian Sinclair... and many more. :D One of my favorite things to do at conventions is cosplaying! It's so much fun. If I cosplay loved characters by others, I get a lot of hugs and people asking me for a picture. The attention is great for me, and it also improves my social skills as well.

I've only been to Fanime. It was fun. That was where I first saw Sailor Moon Abridged.
|
I'm a frequent attendant to cons since i really enjoy that time of the month where i get to see some cosplay, meet some personalities, and buy a bunch of merchs. Heck, one of my Meloetta dolls is something i got from a convention a while back.
Also, i did go to a con on costume at one point where i dressed up as the TF2 Scout and actually had some people notice me. I was backed with some friends who went with their attires as well, but i didn't consider what i wore as actual cosplay since i was not in character, nor i did i look the part where it looked professionally done. Well, at least i now have a suit and tie on so I can go to cons as "Secret Agent Xin Zhao" after i crafted my spear. |
Unfortunately, i've never been in a convention even though i'm super hyped to go to one but i can't afford them because i leave far away from them :(

and if they would make it "illegal" to do on convensions people would cry out they're being opressed most likely. Yaoi is rape Leaches are for the bedroom Japan isn't like in the animes The list could go on and on, I don't go to conventions anymore because of several reasons... |

Those other two are true, though. Really, it sounds more like an issue of the culture of attendees in your area of Sweden not having a filter. |

Sekai Ichi Hatsukoi, Junjou romantica, Kirepapa and so on. |
The first (and only - so far) convention I've been to was AWA back in 2009. {D:} Life has just been too busy, but it was a lot of fun when I went!
I graduated recently from college so things are finally starting to slow down for me, so we're able to do things like conventions now! In May we are going to go to MomoCon, and then we'll do AWA in September this year. I'm super pumped! Not sure if I'll dress up or anything yet. Maybe just do a Pokemon hat or something at MomoCon and do an actual costume for AWA...haven't decided yet. |
