The official unofficial J/E moan thread

No, this is not a lewd thread, I'm just giving you a place to get things off your chest [Still not a lewd thread]. What's been grinding your gears recently, in the world of J/E?

2 things to start us off with from me.

Episode by episode reviews on sites like ANN. I get reviews, I get wanting to discuss a series whilst it's still airing but I will never understand why people feel the need to write 1500 word essays on episode 29583 of Naruto Shippiden's most recent filler arc. A lot of them aren't even entertaining to read and some of the links on the front page of ANN contain spoilers.

People that seemingly can't tell the difference between good animation and pretty backgrounds. This one bothers me a lot more than it should.

Remember, holding things in is bad for your health.

I hate CGI animation.

Like, hate it with my soul (well actually I'm a ginger I don't have a soul).

This is so true. And so sad...

In regards to openings...

Stop abusing stills. I get it, animation costs money and you want to focus on the show, but put some goddamn effort into the thing that should be the hook to your show. This This is not okay. This is not good. This is the fast track to making a forgettable, skippable opening because it just looks lazy and doesn't really add anything to the overall scene. It's not fucking right. And I use GO as an example because pretty much all of its openings are offenders of the whole "Nothing's Happening!" trend wherein, you guessed it, NOTHING'S HAPPENING. And this bothers me because I care about openings. I like openings. Openings should be important to the studio and especially to the singers because it's merchandise and their livelihoods respectively.

Related.

A good song doesn't make a good opening. Whether you like an opening with a good song and shitty animation or a shitty song and good animation or, even both are quality but they don't meld together at all- that doesn't matter to me. That's on you, what you like, and I'm all for varied opinions. But. But but. With that in mind, I don't agree with the massive support of an opening that does do one of those things because I think, on an objective level, it makes for a worse, lower quality opening. If we say okay to those things, as is the case with pretty much any commonly handwaved trend in anime (or anything, really), it'll continue to be marketed and used and could potentially become a problem. Hacking to the Gate is the example I often use for something where they don't actually like the openings for its various parts or the sum of them, but rather because they like the song or the show.

Ignoring these things is easy, and making excuses for them...works, I suppose, but expressing your distaste, even if you're just some baka gaijin who's convinced their word won't have any effect on anything, can mean a world of good.

The music video for Raise Your Flag completely ruined the song for me.

A lot of people who do not speak Japanese or just watch anime for the sake of such don't even get what's bad voice acting in an anime while most of the time, these same scrubs will still talk sh1t towards most English Dubs of anime because "OMGZORS DIS ENGLISH DUB SUWKS!"

Is it really that hard to know what's bad Japanese voice acting or not? I do not speak Japanese yet I know that the Jojo's Bizarre Adventure OVA in Japanese sounds so bad compared to it in English. Watching the Jojo OVA in its Japanese Audio made me fell asleep because that's what the voice actors were probably doing for more than half of the whole thing, except for that ORAORAORAORAORA. The delivery of the lines... speaking of falling asleep....

Don't mind the Spanish Subs. This is a sample of the rather lazy voice delivery of Dio's VA in the Jojo OVA.

Sometimes people forget that anime is and will usually be made to cater towards Japanese audiences, so a situation depicted in a episode that then makes some think "wait, how is this realistic this never happens to me etc". People tend to forget there are cultural differences.

Whilst not necessarily J/E this does seem to pop up quite regularly on this part of the web. People using the word 'addicting' when they should be using 'addictive'. If I ever caught a loved one using it I think I'd have to honour kill them.

When it takes sooo many months for an anime/live action movie to get a Blu-Ray before you actually get to watch it :c

Also when Funimation delays the first episode of some of the anime have licensed at the start of the season and the sub doesn't come out till half a day/ another day later than it was suppose to -.-

Although I'm thankful for local cinemas here to be showing anime movies like the YowaPedal movie and The Boy and the Beast, wish that the viewings aren't only for a single weekend :/ And that I wish more anime movies show as well...

Posted this in the DCC, didn't even think to post this here. Thoughts were just spilling out. Anyway, it's appropriate, so:

Unrelated, I saw Akuma no Riddle [at the bookstore]. I'd heard the name around, but the reason it stood out to me was because the translation is actually an unofficial subtitle...and it's accurate but it's not. A good localizer might call it Devil's Riddle or, more accurate, Riddle of the Devil. However, and I hope to God this was a Japanese translation that was kept as is for the sake of consistency, it's instead called "Riddle Story of Devil".

Got a lot of problems with this. The Engrish is obvious, but the real problem is that they actually added onto the original title with more nonsense and made it less faithful because...I mean. And not including "the" doesn't make a title more faithful, it just makes it sound pretty damn dumb and exhibits a lack of understanding about how translation- not even localization- works. Other than this, the manga is called both of these, but only on the inside. The spine and I believe the cover both just say Akuma no Riddle.

And really, this wouldn't bother me if this was the first time I'd seen this, but this terrible title trans/localization trend is getting really annoying and just shows a lack of care about what their jobs are. And some...some are just plain dumb as hell. Shinmai Maou no Testament? Yeah, that's The Testament of Sister New Devil, which would be perfectly fine (albeit silly) if she was named "Sister New Devil" or a nun named "New Devil". But she's not. And Sister New Devil doesn't even make any sense, it doesn't tell you anything. It just sounds silly. And not really in a way that's appealing. And this came out last year.

So yeah. Kinda just felt like...I don't even wanna say venting. Especially because, whether you consume officially translated media or not, it's not uncommon for anyone who speaks English to refer to a title by its well-known English name, especially if it's more convenient.

I could rant on the inconsistent name translations of katakana names that we have in Indonesia.

Like Gauche Suede from Tegami Bachi? Uh, is it Geuss, Goos or what? MAKE UP YOUR DANG MIND!

EDIT: okay, to clarify I don't mind mistranslations as long as they're consistent.

I guess they're aimed towards people like me - ones who always like reading up people's opinions on specific episodes and, perhaps, even get to learn a few details that I probably missed during my watch. I mean, I follow Gintama's episodic reviews every week on ANN, haha. I like reading and going through people's reactions - especially when there's some really surprising/dramatic shit going on in the said series (like Gintama right now).

I don't get the point of the reviews they do for series like Naruto or One Piece, though. I mean, yeah, people still watch those anime (i've given up. mango still godly tho) but all I see when I skimmed through some of them are those "authors" consistently complaining about animation/pacing in One Piece and the era of the filler-seasons in Naruto. Like, that's kinda redundant at this point, no?

This. So much.

And it isn't limited to just the background. If a person sees pretty character art, it is automatically a well animated anime for them. I feel like telling them the difference then and there but, more often than not, it really isn't worth it. Ones who are actually into anime (not just casual watchers) usually know the difference anyway.
