16 and Pregnant
Did you guys ever know anyone at your school who was a teen mum (or dad)? How bad was teenage pregnancy at your school? Did they fit the stereotypes that the media portrays (i.e. poor, no father around, babies with weird names) or not?
My friend Nathaniel, who is a year younger than me, became a father at the age of 17. His girlfriend was also 17. It really surprised me when I found out that he was about to become a father because he and the mother of his baby were both from good, relatively stable families and definitely don't fit the stereotypes of teen parents. (Nathaniel told me that he didn't want to play into stereotypes of teen parents. He even said "no teen mum names" when they were pondering names for their baby - they ended up naming her Violet.) Their daughter lives with the mother and the maternal grandmother, but Nathaniel still visits his daughter frequently. On the other hand, I did know a few teen moms at my school who were stereotypical bogans. The youngest pregnant girl I encountered had her baby when she was 15 and she really fit the stereotype. She ended up naming her daughter Brooklyn. Even though Australia has a lower teen pregnancy rate than the US and the UK, there were still a surprising amount of them at my school. It's really sad... |
I dont really know anyone young that is pregnant but my mate told me that her cousin is pregnant and she is like 14 but she does fit the stereotype due to the photo my mate has shown me.

A lot of the people I went to Secondary School with have kids approaching double digits in age by now. I don't know if they fit the negative stereotypes associated with teenage parents at the time, but most of them have their act together by this point. No odd baby names I've seen and, whilst there are a couple of single parents amongst them, that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
I don't know any pregnant teenagers at the moment. I know of an area where there are plenty, but it's one of *those* areas, so it's not surprising. |
Yea, when I was either a freshman or sophomore in high school someone I knew from middle school got pregnant. I didn't really talk to her much after middle school so it was a little surprising when I heard but I saw her around my senior year and she seemed to be doing well.
As far as the stereotype goes, although I don't know about any strange names, I'd say she fit the bill. But I mean, a lot of us could have as well. There was another girl, that I also knew from middle school, that got married to some older guy her sophomore year. They're still together but no pregnancy yet, that I've heard of at least. |
Quite a few friends and people in my year have had children. Some have really taken to it (like my friend Katie, who loves her little girl, and has been inspired to work with children)
One girl who was in my year is 19, and has just has her 4 child. All by different men. Tbh I wouldn't even care about that, but she's told her other 3 kids that "mummy doesn't love them", which is horrendous. They have stereotypical names as well |
I had a friend who got pregnant at 14, and we were still in Junior High. Hard times.
I'm still in touch with her, surprisingly. It's actually her only child. So if you do the math, the kid is 10-11 right now I think. All of my cousins from my mom's side of the family have at least 1 kid before turning 20, with their first one born at around 16-17 years old. I am the only one in the family that does not have a kid, and I plan to stay that way. |
I literally know so many people from school who have kids now. When we were at school one guy had 1 baby at 13 (I think he has 3 now) and another when we were 14.
I've decided to attribute PokéCommunity to me never becoming a teenage father. (This may or may not be a good thing) |
When I was in high school, the community was very much conservative against teen pregnancy, so for the few instances that might have occurred, I've never heard of them. On the bright side, perhaps they all got abortions. I still don't know anyone who got pregnant as a teenager.

They were many teen mom/dads at my school, but I wasn't really close to any of them.
One of my friend wanted to have kids young and she had it at 18. But we kinda lost touch right after (we all moved away). |

Most I heard during school was like..."oh yeah, [some random girl I don't know at all] is pregnant", etc.
And since I didn't know them, I couldn't make any kind of comment about stereotypes. But that's it. I don't recall anybody I actually knew ending up like that. After high school, sure. I heard of a few things like that happening then with friends I'd lost touch with. Just not during. (I think worst I heard was basically "got pregnant and then ended up marrying boyfriend because of it". Whatever.) |
A handful of girls in my class made a pregnancy pact to get pregnant before hs ended. I think we had 6 or maybe 7 girls in my graduating class who had children. It was really a staggering number for a class as small as mine was :s

I've never heard of that before!! o.O It's kinda.. scary. (Well for me everything that turn around a kid is scary. Kids are scary. I sometime have to punch myself in the belly if I see a pregnant woman because it make mee feel so weird inside... Just thinking about it....) <-- I probably ever have kids XD |

I do. In my junior year, a girl in my grade got pregnant. I'm friends with her on Facebook, and her baby is doing very well. Think he's one now? She named him Kevin, so I'm guessing that's avoiding stereotypes? I don't really keep up with her, but judging from her Facebook posts, I'd say the she doesn't fit the stereotype at all.
|
When I was in high school, I had two friends that were pregnant junior and senior year and there was one other girl on the day of graduation that got pregnant too. I didn't ask my friends what they would name their baby, so I don't know if the names were stereotypical or not. With family, I have one cousin that got pregnant with her first child at 17 while another cousin I never really talked to apparently got her first child at 13.
|
Currently, I know a Junior that's pregnant, but that's all. Probably more that I'm missing, they took me by surprise. I don't really have a big issue with that kind of stuff, people make mistakes, but I really think it's not good to make a big life decision and end up not living up to it. I know more people who've lost their virginity at early ages than ones that actually end up pregnant, though.
|
I think only one girl in my grade got pregnant. She had her baby sophomore year of high school, dropped out and got married. I think her brother got married and had a kid around 17 too, actually.
Other than that, no one else had kids until after graduation. |
I actually can't think of anyone from my high school who got pregnant whilst still at school.
|
I've met no one that got pregnant or got someone pregnant during school.
|
There weren't any teen pregnancies when I was in high school (at least as far as I know of) but a ton of my former classmates have had kids since I graduated 5 years ago, some of them having kids when they were 18 or 19 so I guess that still counts as a teen pregnancy? Technically, lol. Idk, I don't even want to think about kids until much later, I think early 20s is still too young for them, but that's imo.
