Acquired Taste

Any anime that comes to your mind that you initially couldn't get into but gradually warmed up to? Like, its as if the anime requires you to have a particular mindset - one that you can only acquire through a relatively substantial amount of time dedicated towards watching it? Any series like that?

Gurren Lagann - I did not enjoy that show at all the first time around, largely because I didn't get it. I didn't get Gainax or rule of awesome. And I tried to say I only marginally liked it, but there aren't really many things that can get me to just turn off the TV from sheer annoyance, I could not understand why the show was so popular. And I watched it to the end (really enjoyed the first two post-time skip episodes)- rambling. Watched the movies years later under a recommended perspective and absolutely fucking loved them. To this day I don't really watch the show much (less out of distaste than just preference) and watch the movies on a whim, I love 'em so much.

Revolutionary Girl Utena - Yeah, so...when I originally watched this, I was young. And it came on Funimation. And I watched it casually and possibly not in order, which, as I learned, is not a good way to go into that show. I mean, I could at least comprehend TTGL. Utena was weird, had just strange direction, there was an egg, cars, shadow people, what is imagery- and those were all the things I thought when I watched last year. No, half-joking, but when I watched it on Funi I didn't really know...it was an acquired taste, let's just say that.

Kill la Kill - Yadayada one of my favorite anime now yadayada gainax yadayada hype

Death Parade - There's some type of preachy philosophy I don't like. Generally, I don't give a shit about preaching when I can see a very clear line to where it's going to go and what impact it'll have on my interest, it can be a dealbreaker. Watched the first episode, wasn't really interested. And I was at the concept, but it was mostly its conclusion that had me...uninterested. And if it'd been just about that, I wouldn't have liked it at all. Then I was forced to watch it with friends, and twister happened. Oddly, of all episodes, that's when I turned. That's when I started enjoying the show. As for why...it'd be spoilers, but I definitely felt a spark. Now I like it.

Though I will say, even when I didn't, Death Billiards was absolutely fantastic. Best episode in the series...despite not being an episode in the series.

Reverse case, Black Cat - I watched some pretty fun shows as a kid, there aren't really many that I could watch now and just not enjoy. Black Cat, though. Watched it recently. It's...uh, not very good. Really anticlimactic ending. I hear the manga's good, though.

Not many shows fit that for me but there are certainly recurrent themes in anime that I've grown to like.

The power of love - or friendship. I like battle shounen and Kawamoriesque stuff now much more than when I was getting into anime.

Recycled animation - I'm not saying that I love every piece of recycled animation out there but there are enough cases where I do. Lots of series would lose some of their charm if they got tid of transformation/walking up stairs sequences.

Harem - I've come full circle on this one. After a short stint of liking it when first getting into anime I quickly got tired of it. Was never a case of me being 2mature4u, I just wasn't enjoying them. Now they're pretty much the best thing out there.

Also shows that are described as 'so bad they're good' or 'trainwrecks'. I enjoy these more every day.

Like macho, it took me a few tries to get into TTGL. I went into it with minimal super robot knowledge and so much of that show was just designed for super robot fans. I'd undoubtedly like it more now than I did in 2009/10.

Sort of related, I had to shake off preconceptions for both sports and mecha anime, they've both gone on to become favourites of mine. It didn't take long though.

One Punch Man (I'm sorry Dero) . The first few episodes were just "okay" for me since I'm not one for those kinda humor type anime, but I started really liking it from where the Hero Registry test started. Saitama just being the underestimated C-Class hero who ends up kicking ass when everyone else struggles.

I don't really know anything else that I can say I warmed up to? In most cases it's the opposite way round where I enjoy the first episode or two and then everything goes really downhill from there.

Maybe Ouran High School Host Club since it was my first anime knowing it was an anime ever and I just wasn't used to anime/ japan things at the time? Had 2 or so attempts at watching the first few episodes before I actually got hooked.

My friend kept pushing Ping Pong The Animation on me super hard so I gave it a shot. At first, I couldn't find much motivation to watch it and I even turned it off halfway through one of the early episodes. After that, I left it alone for awhile until he pestered me to pick it back up. Gradually, I started to find a lot more interest in it and when I hit a little bit past the midpoint I just finished the rest of it in one sitting. I wouldn't call it a favorite but it's definitely really, really good.

When I started Hyouka I was having trouble staying awake watching it. Now it might've been the fact that I always tried watching it after lacrosse practice so I was already tired but I just couldn't find any interest in the mysteries. I think when the
Spoiler:
Oreki x Chitanda
hijinks really started to pick up I began to enjoy the show a lot more. The ending got me so good lmao.

Oh, I almost forgot Working!! The first time I put it on, I'm pretty sure I found it boring as bricks. I really don't know why I kept watching it or started to actually enjoy it but I did take a fairly big break from it at first. I went straight to S2 after finishing it and man did I love S3, actual final episode included. I actually disliked Yamada at first, but then she became my favorite character out of the crew.

Growing up during the good ole days of AXN and going home after school just in time for some anime, one of the things that was being played during that time was Vandread. I was a lot younger back in the day and my appreciation for anime was just starting to expand from just Gate Keepers and Your Under Arrest. For some reason, it took me a while to like Vandread mainly since its very anti-male aka "Men are Scum" or "Men are idiots from another galaxy" premise so as a young developing male years ago, i didn't want to bother with it. But after some time and some episodes, I was able to keep up with said series and now thinking about it, I think i should start watching it again.

Then there was also Cooking Master Boy. I remember seeing snippets of this show through peeking at other people's TVs and as a younger lad, I found the premise and basic formula of the show to be damn ridiculous. As i wanted more of the action fantasy types back in the day, an anime about Epic cookery was something that i literally needed an acquired taste. Of course, after seeing lots of the ridiculous yet awesome moments, i was happy. Heck, it even widened my appreciation for food and the culinary arts.

I started getting into anime watching K-on. when I watched the first season I really liked it whilst watching it every now and then, when I'm free. I watched the second season by binge watching it and I was really burned out halfway through. I finished it later and that was when I realized that slice of life anime like it should be watched weekly or so, to really get the most out of each episode without it feeling 'boring'

One of the first animes I ever watched was Kagerou Project, just as it aired. I got through about three episodes, but I couldn't really bring myself to watch more. I don't really know why, but two years have gone by, and it's now one of my favorites. Same thing happened with SAO, it really really grew on me. That's why nowadays, I try to watch at least three episodes of something before dropping it, but that's still a bit hard to do nowadays with the tight schedule I'm on ;w;

Heavy Object.
In the first arcs I was like "why am I watching this?" but slowly near the first cour's end, I definitely started to like it.
And the second cour is a blast =D
