Shifts

Ever work a particularly bad set of hours? I'm adjusting to a night schedule right now. I'll be working from 10pm to 7am for the next three months or so.

Margot February 26th, 2016 7:39 AM

Nah, I've always been in corporate, so my work days always fell between 8 and 5:30. My current job is usually 9:15 to 6pm. For 2 weeks last month I was basically running non-stop from 8am to 10pm. It was brutal x_x

NinjaRaichu February 26th, 2016 11:19 AM

nope Ive only done office work so just bewteen 8-5 mon-fri type stuff, I dont think I could deal with late shifts or constant weekend work.

pkmin3033 February 26th, 2016 12:57 PM

When I worked at my local Tesco Express my shifts were from 5:30am to 2pm, quite often without a break due to being short-staffed and overcrowded because it was the weekend. I was getting up at 4:30am and it was wreaking merry hell on my sleep schedule - as I was waking up at 3am thinking it was 4am and not realising it until I was downstairs and dressed - and I couldn't really cope with it on top of my rather packed College schedule.

My last job I did 8:30am to 5:15pm Monday to Thursday, and 8:30am to 4:15pm on Friday. The slightly longer shifts through the week was worth it to leave an hour early on Friday.

Sammi February 26th, 2016 1:55 PM

I don't think I've ever had particularly weird hours.

Except Black Friday. When I was working at the pizza place, one year I came in at 4 or 5AM. I got to leave "earlier" than I usually did, but it was still no earlier than noon iirc. I didn't have Thanksgiving that year because I needed to sleep...

These days I work 6AM-2:30(ish)PM Monday-Thursday and 6AM-12PM Friday. I'm more used to waking up early. Mostly I just hate closing, so I'd rather open.

I used to work 8 am to 10 pm though, with a 4 hour break in-between. x.x Split shifts are awful.

Do you get double for working +8 hour days? Just curious, cause I could have sworn that was a thing.

Might depend on the state/country. I think over here, overtime starts after 40 hours in the week. So you could work 10 hours per day per week and not earn overtime wage.

Correct, I know that in the US if you work over 40 hours you get overtime payment, I just didn't know if there was another rule if you worked over 8 hours in a day it applied as well.

Depends on the state still and also the corporation. If you do indeed live in Boston, Mass has some very nice labor laws for workers so it might just apply to you. If you work over 10 hours any given day here (Ohio) then it's overtime but working exactly 10 hours is fine.

Over 40 a week is also overtime.

Sweet deal. I do live in Boston but thankfully I don't work +10 hour days. As a teacher I'm perfectly content working my 8-3PM's. (:

Brendino February 27th, 2016 2:18 AM

My work hours right now are 230-11 PM, which I'm not really fond of, but at least they aren't graveyard or split shifts like I've done in the past. Still, it sucks that I don't usually get home until midnight, and my whole sleep schedule is thrown off because of it.

killer-curry February 27th, 2016 2:28 AM

8am to 7pm

Everyday.

Least you have freedom to do stuff in work.

Keiran February 27th, 2016 5:20 AM

I (normally) work 10pm-7am as well! Every first and last week of a month I work 8pm-8am. But I rarely leave on time.

But it doesn't bother me. As a kid my sleep schedule was constantly changing and almost always awful, so I'm used to it and acclimate to change easily.

Bellsprout February 27th, 2016 1:28 PM

for a little while i was working overnights 11pm-5am and that was okay at first but after a while it gets to you.. do not recommend

Astinus February 27th, 2016 2:01 PM

When I was promoted to full time, I had to completely switch my schedule. I used to work second shift, from 4 PM to 10 PM. Now I work from 7:30 AM to 4 PM.

Along with that switch, every two weeks, I have to work an overnight shift. Which means that I go into work at 12 AM and don't get out until 9 AM. It's really difficult to make sure I get sleep on those weekends.

moon February 27th, 2016 4:27 PM

Yeah, my work hours don't match up with certain time zones I want to be in tune with.

Nick February 28th, 2016 6:32 PM

I worked 7am until 3pm and then 4pm until 9:30pm today. And mostly every day for the past week, and foreseeable future except on days off. Which is usually on Monday and Tuesday. It's not that bad.

Sheep February 28th, 2016 6:52 PM

Latest schedule I've worked was 3:30PM to 10PM once a week when I did retail for three months last year. Didn't like that at all, preferably I'd like to get out of work by no later than 5PM so a traditional 9-5 works best for me. I haaate working later into the evening when it gets dark.

Logan February 29th, 2016 12:58 AM

I am paid to work x amount of hours a week so as long as I fit them all in Mon-Fri I'm pretty flexible. I usually work 7:30-5 so I can finish early on a Friday.

I never quite understood the 9-5 thing. A normal workday for me is 8-5. Do Americans not take lunch or do they only work 35h weeks?

Lipstick Vogue February 29th, 2016 5:41 AM

I could imagine my shifts wouldn't sit well with a lot of people. I start between 3am and 4am and get out between 12pm and 2pm. Mondays and Thursdays off so no real weekend.

Agreed. I don't get paid for my lunch hour either.

35hrs is full time in a lot of places. In others it's 32 or 40. Depends on the employer and/or state. It's not really an American thing.

Sheep February 29th, 2016 6:18 AM

Well it depends really. 9-5 are your typical hours with no hour of lunch which is fairly common around here. I work 10-6 and any time I take a lunch break over 30 minutes long (which I've only done twice) I won't be paid for it, though my mom does 8-5 and can take a two-hour long break and still get compensated. The 35 hours/week is still considered full-time in quite a lot of places.

I can barely get myself up at 8AM to get ready for work.. time to find something more enjoyable I guess. ='(

Meganium February 29th, 2016 7:47 AM

As a supervisor my hours were usually mornings, where I go in at 6 am and leave at 12 pm sometimes. However, with my classes being in the mornings now, I had to readjust to a night schedule, where I go in at 5:30 pm and leave until the store is spotless...usually after 11:30 pm.

My new job will have that typical 9-5 schedule so I'll be looking forward to that.

All times are GMT -8. The time now is 4:40 PM.
