Bank Allows Transferring RBY VC Pokemon into Sun and Moon

Here is the source.

I, for one, am very surprised. They broke backwards compatibility with these games and Gen 3 because of how different the data structures are. To move a Gen 1/Gen 2 Pokemon into the current games you need to freshly generate a ton of data to fill in the blanks, and at that point, you might as well be generating a new Pokemon altogether.

Unless they tampered with data structures in the VC re-releases to have all of the necessary information pre-generated, the Pokemon that arrive in Sun and Moon from the Bank are not going to be the same Pokemon that left RBY VC. Stat Exp and DVs, lack of personality values in the Gen 1 and 2 games, Gender itself being determined by DVs and not personality value, no natures, etc. It'll be a mess!

Thoughts?

EDIT: Something else to note, this re-releases long gone moveset possibilities into the current games. The old TM moves can be taught to RBY VC Pokemon and brought up into Pokemon Sun and Moon. If Game Freak is feeling particularly generous, the old TM moves could be used as egg moves for a ton of later gen Pokemon. Teach Razor Wind to your Pidgeotto, transfer it to Sun and Moon, and breed it onto Fletchling!

EDIT 2: No Guard Fissure Machamp anyone?

GiovanniViridian February 26th, 2016 8:57 AM

If there's actual backwards compatibility from Gen 1 to Gen 7 (I assume Sun and Moon are actually Gen 7 though) and not to Gen 6, I suspect that there should be huge Kanto references.

And speaking of this, looks like I got another good reason to get the RBY VC rereleases now.

Sirfetch’d February 26th, 2016 8:59 AM

I am really curious as to how the Nature of the Pokemon are going to be determined. Will it be completely random?

AliceBlaze February 26th, 2016 8:59 AM

I just realised something; since it has been confirmed that the Missingno glitch will still be in the VC version of Red/Blue, what will happen if you catch it and try to put it on Bank?

We'll have to assume that Bank will not accept Missingno. and other glitch Pokemon. I bet that glitch Pokemon may be given the Stadium treatment and turned into Ditto, or deleted altogether by Bank.

Hikamaru February 26th, 2016 9:04 AM

With this new update to the Pokemon Bank compatibility, I'm definitely curious as to how the nature/characteristic/ability etc. of a Pokemon sent from the RBY re-release to SM will be calculated, like Chase mentioned.

Pinkie-Dawn February 26th, 2016 9:05 AM

I've been asking the same question. Will their natures, IVs, and abilities be at random, or is Game Freak fully aware of the competitive community and that all Pokémon transferred from R/B/Y will be given the most recommended natures, IV spread, and abilities by default?

Do you happen to know if the Mew glitch is also still intact in the VC version? This would make it easy for us to farm Mews in our PokeBanks.

As far as I hear, the Mew Glitch is intact in Yellow. Yellow has also changed Jynx's skin to purple and unlocked the Surfing Pikachu minigame to Pikachu without Surf. I assume the Mew glitch is intact in Red and Blue as well.

EDIT: Source on Yellow information.

ggctuk February 26th, 2016 9:12 AM

VC games almost never fix their original games' glitches so it is safe to assume the Missingno., Old Man and Mew glitches will still be present. That too presents another interesting question: what will happen if you try to transfer something over level 100?

KillerTyphlosion February 26th, 2016 9:27 AM

We will find out tommorow when the games get released.

esperance February 26th, 2016 9:31 AM

Well this certainly makes getting a copy of the re-releases more appealing. If I had to guess they'll just take the basic information from the VC Pokemon and randomly generate the rest as if it were a new Pokemon.

Sirfetch’d February 26th, 2016 9:56 AM

I am sure there will be a filter that blocks Mew and Missingnos from being transferred since both have to be acquired via glitch.

esperance February 26th, 2016 10:03 AM

I really wish they would let us transfer the glitch Mew at least but then Mew would become way too common.

Sopheria February 26th, 2016 10:22 AM

I certainly wasn't expecting this. This officially makes RBY-exclusive movesets available in the modern era. Sorta makes that "limited edition" Lance's Dragonite that they're giving out as prizes for Kanto Classic not-so-limited edition anymore :P

Here's what I'm curious about:

Quote:

Once Pokémon Bank has been updated, you'll be able to use it to transfer Pokémon you've caught in the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console versions of Pokémon Red, Pokémon Blue, and Pokémon Yellow into your copy of Pokémon Sun or Pokémon Moon. Pokémon from Pokémon Omega Ruby, Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, Pokémon X, and Pokémon Y can also be brought into Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon in the same way.

Note that Pokémon cannot be moved directly from Pokémon Red, Pokémon Blue, and Pokémon Yellow to Pokémon Omega Ruby, Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, Pokémon X, or Pokémon Y via Pokémon Bank.
So in other words:

RBY---------->Sun/Moon
XY/ORAS----->Sun/Moon
RBY-----X----->XY/ORAS

This just raises all kinds of questions about Sun & Moon and the Pokémon Bank. I'm still trying to fully wrap my head around why this limitation would exist. Presumably, you'd be transferring from RBY to the Pokémon Bank, and once it's in the Pokémon Bank, it can be placed into any game that's compatible with the Pokémon Bank. But this tells me there's a gap between XY/ORAS Pokémon Bank functionality and Sun & Moon Pokémon Bank functionality.

Perhaps Sun & Moon has a separate Pokémon Bank repository from XY/ORAS?

BettyNewbie February 26th, 2016 11:27 AM

I wonder if the fact that RBY can transfer to SM but not XY and ORAS could be a possible hint that the stat system is getting revamped and simplified in SM? Stats were very simple in RBY and GSC, with only 15 IVs, no Natures, and no EV caps, so it was much easier to have strong/viable Pokémon back then.

As somebody who hates IVs, EVs, and especially Natures, going back to RBY/GSC style stats would be a real treat, and it would certainly go a long way towards simplifying Gen 7, as they were talking about back when XY first came out.

mew_nani February 26th, 2016 11:34 AM

Well it technically can be done. In Gen II the Special split was implemented, as well as genders and hold items, but the Pokemon brought in from Gen 1 are the same. They'd have to implement that as well as its IVs (Gens I and II used the DV system, which was different), nature and ability, (and change it to Shiny if it is) but it could still be done without losing the Pokemon, and could even allow it to learn moves only learnable in Gen I.

One thing they need to watch out for however is illegal movesets. I have no doubt any unstable hybrids and glitch Pokemon will not be allowed through, but in Gen I you can get perfectly normal Pokemon with moves they can't have through stabilizing them through Daycare or Evolution.

Curiously did you know any Pokemon being transferred to Gen II automatically had a hold item? It would be neat if they implemented that again.

They already block event Pokemon that were caught in the wild in places they shouldn't be so that shouldn't be a problem. (Well unless they put that Mew under the truck just for giggles...)

Treecko February 26th, 2016 11:44 AM

So does this mean that RBY VC will still have the special stat instead of the split stats? And when they're transfered over, wil the special stat split come into effect? But also what about abilities and nature? There's just so many things that are gonna have to be upgraded when Pokemon are transferred over. I'm curious how it's gonna work.

Necrum February 26th, 2016 11:48 AM

My personal theory on the transfer method is that it will choose the nature based on the highest and lowest stat value attached to the Pokemon in question. High attack and low Special could result in an Adamant Pokemon. Characteristics are entirely dependant on actual IV stats so that one is easy. They'll probably just double the IVs in Gen 1 since they are 15 base instead of 31 base. It may be reasoned that 31s are impossible on imported Pokemon. For SpA and SpD it may just randomize which stat Special goes into and then roll the other separately. Abilities are likely done on a formula based on the IVs of the transferred Pokemon.

I should point out that while they said you can transfer Pokemon to Sun and Moon, they did not say it would not work with XY and ORAS. Bank is going to work with all the games still so it stands to reason that perhaps the only Pokemon that will be restricted from being sent to Gen 6 are ones actually caught in Sun and Moon, or even just Sun and Moon Pokemon and attacks.

Ivysaur February 26th, 2016 11:50 AM

I'm so hyped. Mew Trick mew trick mew trick! FREE MEWS FOR EVERYONE. FREE EVERYTHINGS. GEN I TMS. It was the only think I asked of this and I got it.

Not really. The hardware/low-level software incompatibility (most probably the GBC and GBA networking protocols being too different to be compatible) was the main reason why Gen 1/2 and 3 could not connect. The new data structure is a result of GF realizing they no longer needed to ensure backwards compatibility and using this opportunity to create a new, more interesting, more balanced and kludge-free system.

I think the conversion will be simple. here's how I would do it:
  • Take each stat, calculate the ratio of EVs for this stat divided by the EVs in every stat. Then take the ratio of all gained EVs across all stats divided by all obtainable EVs, multiply by 510 to get the amont of EVs the convrted Pokémon will have. And then, using the ratios caculated for each stat, spread the EVs in the same proportion as they were in Gen 1 (factor in the ratio calculated for the Special stat twice, for obvious reasons). There sure will be side effects, because Pokémon in Gen 1 could have all their EVs maxed out instead of two stats, so a perfect ace in Gen 1 will become a Jack of all trades, master of none in Gen 7, but hey, what can you do?
  • Multiply the IVs by two and add one. Use the formula that is more or less used in Gen 1 to determine the HP IV (which didn't exist as an independent value back then) and to the same.
  • Use the same formula as in Gen 2 to determine the gender and whether the Pokémon is shiny.
  • Transfer the species, the nickname (they might not keep this one, with their paranoid censorship system and everything) , the moves and the experience points verbatim.
  • Everything else... well, there's nothing to base Natures, Abilities and everything else on, so that will be determined at complete random. Factoring in other data could make the conversion formula open for abuse (imagine if someone discovered a series of moves or something a particular Pokémon could have to get the best abilities in Gen 7) .

What else... oh yeah, if the Bank can't transfer Mews obtained with the Mew glitch... then, this feature, at least to me, will be completely and utterly worthless. I don't see the problem with Mew becoming easily obtainable, IMHO the existence of event exclusive species of Pokémon is the only thing holding the franchise back.

We'll wait and see...

Cherrim February 26th, 2016 12:18 PM

I'm a little surprised at the fact that you can transfer Pokemon and all the glitches are left intact but... I guess maybe it's not that weird?

They've already made some edits to the games to update them for 3DS, even though they're still quite faithful, so I wouldn't be surprised if under the hood, everything's being given natures and stuff like that for when/if they get transferred up to a newer gen.

Half-life 3 Generation 7 confirmed!!!
I think it could be like the day-care, it just randomly learns some moves.

I would think it difficult to determine whether the Mew is glitched or not, those games store a lot less information than modern Pokemon games do. We'll probably be okay for it, plus Mew is still not allowed in VGC or on GTS so what good is it for them to block it?

... unless they don't plan on distributing Mew for Gen 1 at all, in that case they could consider all Mews coming from Gen 1 as glitched and prevent them from crossing over simply based on species :) .

Crin February 26th, 2016 12:27 PM

Do you think we'll be able to transfer R/B/Y pokemon into X/Y?
