The New Bird

.... Is there really not a thread about the bird?

https://49.media.tumblr.com/24bf672b14b9f532e249c66b10c7ea8f/tumblr_o35ur7fyWH1tdtetdo4_540.gif

initially we all thought it was Fletchling but on closer inspection that's 100% a new bird Pokemon. it has a large tuft on the back of its head that Fletchling lacks, and when the wireframe's model gets a texture applied to it, you can see it has zygodactyl feet-- which means two toes in the front and two toes in the back. Here's Fletchling for comparison:

considering this new bird has zygodactyl feet, its species can be narrowed down to only a few kinds. (most birds have three twos in the front, one in the back)

a woodpecker, owl, cuckoo, or parrot all have the same type of feet. i'm thinking woodpecker, definitely.

Why am I getting peacock vibes from this?
I REALLY WANT A PEACKOCK POKEMON

pokestar1993 February 26th, 2016 9:26 AM

I think that the bird is more of a woodpecker, I could tell by its head and, even more importantly, it's feet.

Hikamaru February 26th, 2016 9:26 AM

I think it looks like a hummingbird or a woodpecker, with a body shape inspired by Fletchling thrown in.

pkmin3033 February 26th, 2016 9:26 AM

The plumage reminds me of Fletchling, which makes me think it'll be a fire-type of some sort, but...eh. It's difficult to tell with a crappy wire-frame model and a zoomed-in model. xD

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire February 26th, 2016 9:27 AM

To me it looks like a woodpecker instead of a hummingbird. Hummingbirds tend to have longer beaks.

blue February 26th, 2016 9:28 AM

Looks like some sort of Woodpecker or Cardinal which would be great since we haven't had any Pokemon based of either of these.

Sopheria February 26th, 2016 9:31 AM

It's tough to say because we don't have any idea on what the scale is for the model--it could be a small bird, or it could be a bit larger. It reminds me of Fletchling so I keep assuming it'll be around the same size as Fletchling too :P But we can't be too sure on that. A woodpecker Pokémon would be pretty cool, but it could also be a hummingbird.

Can't help but be reminded of 'Woody's New Bird,' which rather concerned season tickets at Middlesbrough, albeit tangentially to the main query of whether birds result in the annulment of Jonathan Woodgate's marriages.

Looks a bit like Taillow. We'll have to see if it ends up in the same bracket of, 'We have no in-game Pidgey, panic.'

Sirfetch’d February 26th, 2016 9:47 AM

I agree that it looks a lot like a woodpecker haha. Maybe it's potentially a Grass/Flying Pokemon, if so? Though the orange coloring makes me think not :( Super excited for it regardless!

Funny you mentioned it, because there was a leaked list from last week that included a hummingbird Pokémon. Its base form is pure Flying type, but it gains an Electric typing in its evolution. This is why I did not list my ideas at the New Pokémon thread, because I'm still holding on to that leaked list, and this mystery bird Pokémon could be that same hummingbird Pokémon from the list.

MarioManH February 26th, 2016 10:01 AM

Oh terrific, more bird spam in the early routes :(

An Electric/Flying bird would be cool, but one would expect it to be blue or yellow :/

the only problem with that is hummingbirds don't have the same kind of feet as this bird.

this bird's feet are specifically for climbing vertical poles (trees), which is why it has an extra back toe. whereas hummingbirds only have the standard bird feet with one back toe.

now here's what a woodpecker's feet (and this bird's) look like:

kingkaiultraron February 26th, 2016 10:49 AM

I feel like it could be a woodpecker since it's beak gives of that sort of vibe.
That would make it a grass/flying in my mind, could see it as a counterpart to Talonflame.

moon February 26th, 2016 10:56 AM

Woodpecker grass/flying would be really cool yeah! Gonna hope for that one. Give us an "early bird" that's actually interesting again (;

MarioManH February 26th, 2016 11:03 AM

If the final evolution is as good as Pidgeot, I will have no issues what so ever.

I didn't thought of that before, but I definitely do now!
A Woodpecker would be nice too!

Sylphiel February 26th, 2016 12:26 PM

As much as I would love parrots, oh god please parrots

...Yeah, that's definitely more of a woodpecker vibe, there. No problems with something like that though, that would still be cool to have.

Forgot to pattern the other wing.
The ability would be gale wings but instead of giving flying type moves priority it would do it with grass type moves with woodhammer. As it evolves wood will grow on its head allowing it to use it as a hammer to headbutt with.

Dedenne1 February 26th, 2016 6:19 PM

Plz be an adorable hummingbird plz plz plz we really need one! But who knows it could be anything just cant wait to have that bird spam early in the game :3

Cay February 26th, 2016 7:56 PM

I'd really love a hummingbird, and hopefully it'll have some cool evolutions, too! Great to see a little glimpse of what's to come, as small as this.

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire February 26th, 2016 8:08 PM

I think it'll be a woodpecker. Could be a fusion too of the two birds though.

kingkaiultraron February 26th, 2016 8:24 PM

Here is what I feel the line would look like if it is a woodpecker

jombii February 26th, 2016 8:39 PM

I didn't realize that it was not a Fletchling! Oh my god. A woodpecker Pokemon is something I would like to see. Do you think it is the regional bird? Or is it more of a starter? I'm getting a Grass-flying type from the concept.
