Lunatone & Solrock

Due to the name of the games, there's a lot of speculation out there that revolves around Lunatone & Solrock (e.g. them getting Mega Evolutions, and even them being the boxart mascots). But what roll do you think Lunatone & Solrock will play in this game?

Esper February 26th, 2016 11:10 AM

Probably not very big roles. Maybe they'll be necessary to catch at certain points (kind of like when you get the choice of a fossil) or they'll be given to you. Maybe they'll help you unlock some legendary event Pokemon (like where you have to have them both in your party). I can't see them having much more to do with the game even though they're sun and moon Pokemon. Until these games most people just didn't care about them that much.

blue February 26th, 2016 11:11 AM

I'd be very surprised if they didn't even touch on Lunatone and Solrock, these games couldn't be more suited to those two. It's kinda hard to figure out what role they will play (if any) being Hoenn Pokemon and what not, but perhaps they will receive some sort of mega evolution or even a new pre/evolution each.

James169 February 26th, 2016 11:34 AM

I think they will probably get referenced, maybe an evo/mega though I think that's unlikely, and that's about it

Sirfetch’d February 26th, 2016 11:48 AM

I'm expecting them to be version exclusives at the very least, probably with a mega evolution as well. When you think of sun and moon Pokemon they definitely come to mind first but don't rule out the possibility of Espeon and Umbreon playing a role either. Both are certainly more appealing overall and could help tie in this region with Johto, as some people have speculated.

Alex February 26th, 2016 11:52 AM

they might get a reference, or even be major plot devices, but i don't think they'll be box art. there are way too many cool sun and moon legendary pokemon to be made. :P given the previous games released were ORAS, it wouldn't be a surprise if solrock/lunatone were big part of the new games.

DataFile February 26th, 2016 11:53 AM

I hope that they'll be at least catchable, as not having moon and sun Pokémon in the games would probably lead to some jokes and disappointment.

Hikamaru February 26th, 2016 11:55 AM

I probably won't see them playing a major role, but being version exclusives would make sense considering they tend to be that way, as shown with the Hoenn games so you know, Solrock being in the "red" game and Lunatone being in the "blue" game.

Or maybe they'll be flipped like the silver crystal in Sun and the golden crystal in Moon.

Lunaris Adamantine February 26th, 2016 11:59 AM

I can't say that they will have anything relevant to the story. But if they don't at least get mega evolution, I will have to fly over to Japan and slap them for being stupid.

Sopheria February 26th, 2016 12:07 PM

I'm sure they'll be version-exclusives, at the very least.

That's actually what I was thinking! I doubt they'll play a significant enough role to be the game's mascots, but maybe in these games they'll have some sort of hidden power that's necessary to unlock at some point in the game. Or maybe they'll even have some relationship to the mascot legendaries, like perhaps they're the key to unlocking the legendaries' power, or something like that? Solrock and Lunatone's Dex entries say they're from space, so that leaves the door wide open for new possibilities with these Pokémon!

If they're going to do anything with Solrock & Lunatone, I'd rather see them have something brand-new instead of simpe mega evolution. Some alternate form of transformation akin to Primal Reversion, maybe? :)

BettyNewbie February 26th, 2016 2:33 PM

I'd like to at least see these Pokémon get Megas or anything else special to go with the Sun/Moon theme. I'd also like to see something special done with Espeon/Umbreon and even Vileplume/Bellossom, as they are both supposed to be sun/moon, day/night duos.

In fact, in general, it would be pretty neat for SM to introduce Megas for all evolutions that are obtained with either the Sun or Moon Stones:

Sun Stone: Bellossom, Sunflora, Whimsicott, Lilligant, Heliolisk

Moon Stone: Nidoqueen, Nidoking, Clefable, Wigglytuff, Delcatty, Musharna

The Sun Stone Megas could be exclusive to Sun, while the Moon Stone Megas could be exclusive to Moon. ^^

PageEmp February 26th, 2016 5:33 PM

I was thinking theyd be the mascots of the games.

Very interesting theory and something I think could be quite plausible. While I don't expect all of those to get megas, I can see them at the very least being version exclusives along with Lunatone and Solrock.

Rivvon February 26th, 2016 5:47 PM

No, nothing about Solrock and Lunatone. But Volcarona will be getting a "Moon Pokémon" counterpart.

electicario February 26th, 2016 5:55 PM

I can see Solrock and Lunatone receiving some sort of Tyrogue-like pre-evolution (based on Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan being counterparts on Gen 1), and this new pokemon will be given to the player at some point. But other than that, maybe the evil teams use them along with those day/night pokemon mentioned above. No bigger role in mind basically.

Z25 February 26th, 2016 5:56 PM

Probably none that's actually important.

Candy February 26th, 2016 6:12 PM

Watch as the villain teams of the respective versions own Solrock/Lunatone.

Could be fun to watch.

Dedenne1 February 26th, 2016 6:16 PM

I doubt theyre really important tbh theres never been much news centered around them nor any hype or anything theyre just there like in the corner with nothing to do. And if hey are well I cant say ill like the games any less but it wont certainly be more

Winter February 26th, 2016 6:30 PM

I think they'll be version exclusives at most. If the villain team doesn't use them, it'll be a major waste.

Cay February 26th, 2016 6:36 PM

To be honest, I doubt they'll be the new mascots. I definitely think there's going to be new legends, but I think solrock and lunatone will be a part of the story somehow, though. Version exclusives definitely, though. And maybe a mega evolution.

fenyx4 February 26th, 2016 6:44 PM

(er...why is Lunatone's National Pokedex number before Solrock's National Pokedex number..? Odd; I hardly ever hear people use the order of "moon, sun"..)

:t338::t337: Ah, these two rockheads with the weird typing coupled with a weird Ability.. {XD} I feel that Solrock and Lunatone should get some sort of reference in Pokemon Sun and Moon, but knowing Game Freak, they'll probably avoid such an implementation just to be like they "defied expectations".. -_-

I'm not really sure what Mega Evolutions would do for them in terms of redemption (and I think other Pokemon are currently in need of it more, but that's an aside thought); Solrock's and Lunatone's stats and movesets look kind of wonky... Solrock is physically oriented (but is pretty much a floating rock blob that can't punch, kick, or scratch anything {XD}), so it can't make much use of its thematic Fire-type moves, thematic Solar Beam, and its specially-associated Psychic type, and is arguably deficient in decent physical moves... And while Lunatone is specially oriented, it can't make too much use of its physically-associated Rock type (although I guess there's Ancient Power).. Both of them need Levitate to avoid a Ground-type weakness (not to mention that Levitate is sort of a thematic Ability).. Their base stats could benefit from the buffing, though..

I'm hoping that Solrock and Lunatone are at least implemented as version-exclusive Pokemon (more of the "more common than the other, like Plusle and Minun in Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire" kind, not the "one is obtainable, one is completely unobtainable unless you trade" kind of version exclusivity); it would be even better if they factored even a little bit into the plot, like being required for "activation" of the hypothetical legendary version-mascot Pokemon..
And also, maintain the thing where wild Solrock hold Sun Stones and wild Lunatone hold Moon Stones! {:3} Other "Easter Egg"-ish/secret references would be nice, too..

Maybe, if Pokemon customization returns, we could get Solrock-themed and Lunatone-themed masks and/or hats..? ^^

LilBueno February 26th, 2016 8:39 PM

I think they'll have a significant role. At the very least, they'll be featured prominently. Looking at the design for them and the logos, it's the same sun and moon design. Solrock is an orange circle with four long "rays" protruding from the cardinal directions and four smaller ones between them, same as the Sun logo. Lunatone's is a bit different as its color isn't the same as Moon's logo and Moon uses negative space, but the moon in Moon is the crescent moon with its missing part shown and Lunatone has the same design.

I think it'd be nice to have Version Mascots that aren't Legendaries like GenI. So far, all of the ideas I've seen (two villainous teams, Mega Evolution/Primal Reversion, a related Legendary, a space theme, a pre-evolution) seem completely plausible.
What if -and I can't imagine them doing this- Lunatone and Solrock are the starters? The player isn't given a choice and you get Solrock for Sun and Lunatone for Moon. It'd be different, but since they're pre-GenVII, I don't see that happening. What's more likely, I think, is the usual choice of three starters, but you also get Solrock or Lunatone (depending on the version). I always found it strange how the youngest kids in the games can have a full team of Pokemon, but the player doesn't have one until a Professor gives them a choice even when their parents have Pokemon or are Gym Leaders.

jombii February 26th, 2016 8:41 PM

I think we'll be getting a Mega for them, version-exclusives most probably. However, I don't think they'll be playing a more central role in the games, not even as the evil team's mascot Pokemons. Who knows.

Pinkie-Dawn February 26th, 2016 10:57 PM

The least they could do to them is being version exclusives. There's no way they're going to be part of a villainous team, because they are Tate and Liza's ace Pokémon, and it would only make the twins less unique if everyone else but you, the player, use them.
