Hikamaru February 26th, 2016 2:01 PM

Are you a boy or a girl?

I know the protagonist designs haven't been revealed yet, but will you play as a male or a female trainer when you get the games? Do you go with the one that matches your gender, or are you waiting for the designs to be revealed and then choose based on the design you like better?

pkmin3033 February 26th, 2016 2:03 PM

The boys have all looked the same for the last three generations. I'll be playing as a girl...called Serena. Because I lack originality and can't stop with the Sailor Moon references. My team will be Sailor Moon themed as well...

blue February 26th, 2016 2:04 PM

As always I'll play as the male for the first run, then if I end up getting the second version I'll choose the female protagonist.

Hikamaru February 26th, 2016 2:07 PM

I plan to stick to tradition and play as the female again. Hopefully we get another cute-looking female protagonist because I know cuteness is the key to their designs.

TCB February 26th, 2016 2:10 PM

I always picked the boy...except I think when I picked Leaf in Leafgreen.

With that said...the last three designs for him (excluding ORAS) has been so samey I may change. Gotta see what we got to play with.

And if there's customization back in with added features...

Abby February 26th, 2016 2:16 PM

Well I'm hoping character customisation is a thing, I generally dislike most of the designs.
That being said, I'll be choosing the female character most likely

MarinoKadame February 26th, 2016 2:30 PM

Female because they are always better looking than the Males.

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire February 26th, 2016 2:34 PM

I'll probably pick male. I wonder how the characters will look though.

AlphaTangoFoxtrot February 26th, 2016 2:35 PM

I'll probably go male. I just really hope they expand on the character customization from X and Y and give us a real taste of creating our own characters. The clothing changes and limited skin tone changes were alright, but I'd like them to give us a few base models that we can kind of build around. If not, at least give us a male character that doesn't look the same as all the other male characters from the series in the past decade.

Sopheria February 26th, 2016 2:37 PM

I'm always female :P At least, I always am on my first playthrough. Maybe if I ever decide to do a reset and play through the story again, I'll go with the male, because why not.

Sirenita55 February 26th, 2016 3:08 PM

I prefer to play as the females, I'll most likely be a girl named Luna in Moon XD

Palamon February 26th, 2016 3:23 PM

I always play as both male and female, I'll probably pick male first this time, probably.

Captain Oshawott February 26th, 2016 3:29 PM

I'm gonna be that guy and say that I'm playing a male for obvious reasons. Much like Hudsonbay said above, however, I'll likely be naming my character Sol or something Solar related.

'Cause y'know; 'creativity' :P

Edit: Really hoping for Trainer Customization. It's something I feel ORAS lacked, where X/Y excelled. Maybe you can actually choose from a group of pre-designated pallettes in the beginning, instead of three default options. Nothing annoyed me more than having to wait to get to Lumiose City to get those contact lenses, just because the default option I chose didn't have it. Or to change my hair color.

It's also a stretch, but following Pokemon would be a nice thing too.

Dedenne1 February 26th, 2016 3:29 PM

I always do both as i always buy both versions and ill be starting with the usual whoever looks cooler etc.

Arylett Charnoa February 26th, 2016 4:46 PM

I always find females to be more appealing-looking, and dislike playing as males, so I'll go with female. Also, I like my in-game character to match me as much as possible.

Iceshadow3317 February 26th, 2016 4:50 PM

Don't know yet. If customization makes a reappearance, which I think it will, I will probably be a boy, just to see what kind of clothing we get this time.

Most likely, I will end up getting both Sun and Moon relatively quickly, so I will probably choose a girl to play as in the second game. I always like have a 2nd game so I can restart it if I want.

I am hoping that the female is like White. I love her design and her personality was awesome in the manga. That being said, I was EXTREMELY disappointed when they decided to break the chain of female protagonists from the games being in the anime.

Sirfetch’d February 26th, 2016 4:55 PM

This is something I won't decide until the protags are revealed haha. Typically I play as the male during the first run but if the female is more appealing to me, I will use her :)

Cay February 26th, 2016 5:06 PM

It really depends for me. I usually tend to stick to the boys for my first playthrough, but it's now a matter of whose design I like more, and if I'm basing the protagonist on a character. Can't wait to see the designs, though.

Snoopyfish February 26th, 2016 5:15 PM

I'll likely pick female, since I usually prefer their designs more.
I sure hope that character customization is still a thing.

Lunaris Adamantine February 26th, 2016 5:23 PM

I always go with male. I like to imagine the character basically being me in pretty much everything I play. I liked X an Y with this, because I was able to make the character actually look somewhat like myself. I would like them to bring that feature back, so I can do it again.

Thepowaofhax February 26th, 2016 5:27 PM

I'm probably going to play the female protagonist for once. I've never played the game with the female characters and most of the recent male characters are samey.

Zet February 26th, 2016 5:30 PM

I'll be playing as both. Boy in Sun and Girl in Moon.

PageEmp February 26th, 2016 5:35 PM

I'll be most likely picking male cause I'm a male myself. But I'm on high hopes that the female one looks good.

Brendino February 27th, 2016 3:07 AM

Unless the male character looks like a zombie or something, I'll probably be picking him for whatever version I get. I've only played as the female character once actually, and that was only after I'd beaten Sapphire a few times, and wanted the novelty of my rival being named Brendan.

Kikaito plush February 27th, 2016 3:23 AM

Even though I am a girl I'll choose who ever design I prefer.

CrowSvenson February 27th, 2016 5:08 AM

Both, for different versions.

Sonny for the guy in Sun, and Luna for the lady in Moon.

Because, you know, creativity.

JJ Styles February 27th, 2016 5:37 AM

I'll keep with my tradition of playing the female avatar but if the designs do finally come out and the female avatar doesn't look the part, I'll be a male this time.

Lycanthropy February 27th, 2016 6:11 AM

I would totally pick the male character if that were the case. I mean how cool would it be to play as a zombie? :D

But for serious, like several people here, I normally pick the character of my own gender on my first playthrough. On later saves I just pick whichever I feel like.

εcho. February 27th, 2016 1:45 PM

I almost always play as the female character, mostly because I feel more connected to the game when I play through as my own gender.

Pinkie-Dawn February 27th, 2016 2:26 PM

It would depend if my brother plans to buy one of the versions or how good the design of the female protagonist is going to be.

Tojin February 27th, 2016 2:43 PM

I'm probably gonna stick with the female design unless she looks really bad and/or the male design looks really good. Gotta stick with real life, of course. =P

Rivvon February 27th, 2016 4:00 PM

I always pick the female protagonist because it helps me with immersion, regardless of whose design I prefer. Since lately they've been including the unused protagonist as an NPC in-game, it works out either way because I'll get to see them somehow.

As with all NPCs, I'm looking forward to seeing the new protagonists. I hope we get some official art soon!

MarinoKadame February 27th, 2016 4:18 PM

I got some idea for the names of the female trainers that may be picked.

For Japan they could go with Mizuki as placeholder.
From Japanese 美 (mi) "beautiful" and 月 (zuki) "moon". It can also come from 瑞 (mizu) "congratulations" and 希 (ki) "hope".

The official name may end up being Tsukiko.
From Japanese 月 (tsuki) "moon" and 子 (ko) "child".

In English they got Luna who is too obvious, Lucine and Selena ( Kind of too close to Serena ).

There's maybe other names that could fit.

LilBueno February 27th, 2016 4:48 PM

I always play as a male, regardless of playthrough it is since I identify as such and its easier to immerse myself into the game that way with a silent protagonist. If by chance, we get a non-silent protagonist, I may try out the female POV for once.
Or if the design is that much better~

MarinoKadame February 27th, 2016 5:04 PM

It would be great if by default the female would be dark skinned or tan to break with the usual fair-skinned trainers. Also getting white hairs or silver hairs would go well with it as default.

Lunalie February 27th, 2016 7:37 PM

Depends solely on which one looks better.
If history repeats itself, probably male. Although I did prefer the female character in X/Y so who knows.

Actually, now that I think about it, probably female and name her Luna.

Hermione Granger February 27th, 2016 7:59 PM

Sun I'll play as the male, Moon as a girl.

PageEmp February 27th, 2016 9:36 PM

Yeah, I'm still standing my case that I'm most likely picking male because in real life, I am a male. But I am on high hopes that the female will have a good design.

I'm so HM02 February 27th, 2016 10:20 PM

I've always played as the male character (even with the meh designs as of late) I really am super excited to see the character models and starters!

LilyGardy February 28th, 2016 12:01 AM

As I always play as the Female Character in the Pokémon Games I will pick them. I hope character customisation remains even if it is just an option to change say hair colour.

The male characters have looked similar to other for a while now hopefully he has some variation similar to how the female characters all have different designs.

FennekMaster February 28th, 2016 5:14 PM

I always go with male for the main games and female for the rom hacks and speedruns. I have no idea why I do that but I just do.

Desert Stream~ February 28th, 2016 5:20 PM

Male, as always, but I'm gonna get both.

DragonLordAcid February 29th, 2016 5:14 PM

The grils are always good looking, except for crystal.

KittiOcelotti March 1st, 2016 7:52 PM

It depends on the design, although I doubt that the male design will look that appealing (they usually look plain in contrast to the female design and aways have the the same hair colour (with the exception of Gold, whose hair was a navy blue colour.)

Lately (Gen 5 and onwards) the character designs look like they came straight out of Code Geass (Noodle People) , which bothered me a little. I hope they'll be given proper body proportions this time, or at least slightly more realistic proportions.

jombii March 1st, 2016 8:21 PM

I usually play as a male but I'm expanding my horizons now seeing as the female character have a lot better costumes on XY. It all depends whether they bring back customization.

Angelroid March 2nd, 2016 12:50 AM

I've always play as a male.

Treecko March 2nd, 2016 1:01 AM

It really depends on the design of the male at this point cause I'm just tired of playing as the same looking male every generation. But if the male actually has a nice ,not boring design then I'll go with him.

Inky March 2nd, 2016 1:28 AM

Always depends on the design for me

Hikamaru March 4th, 2016 5:59 PM

I agree. It is kinda disappointing that we had three consecutive male protagonist designs (Hilbert in BW, Nate in B2W2 and Calem in XY) who all had brown hair and wearing blue in their outfits. I feel like Brendan and even Ethan/Gold were the only uniquely designed male protagonists, but I do hope the designs can pick up more in terms of design.

At least the females have more diversity in their designs. Now we just need Game Freak to improve the males.

PokéMew March 5th, 2016 10:16 AM

*implements "other" option considering the amount of people who classify as other genders these days* XDDD

Really though it all comes down to what they look like, but I'll most likely play as a boy.

Flowerchild March 5th, 2016 1:37 PM

The only reason I wouldn't play as a boy is if the character's design was really stupid, but hopefully they'll amp up the character customization this time so that that's no longer a valid concern.

Hikamaru March 5th, 2016 2:06 PM

Or if customization doesn't return, they might actually put effort into the male trainer design.

LexAnarchy March 5th, 2016 3:41 PM

Female I reckon. I'm fed up with male protagonists, they all look the same.

Starry Windy March 5th, 2016 11:39 PM

As for me, I might probably pick as male protagonist again as per my usual tradition most of the time when I picked according to my gender in real life, even though I might play as both whenever I got both versions.

Sun March 6th, 2016 12:38 AM

Usually, I end up getting both versions. So I play both, haha.

KillerTyphlosion March 6th, 2016 5:42 AM

I only picked female in gen 2 and 3. Didn't like the designs of most females afterwards. I wanted to pick female in gen 6, but because of the customization I picked male because I wanted to run in a suit.

Pebbles March 11th, 2016 2:50 PM

a girl of course
gurls rock, boys suck :pink_giggle:

Jetfire March 11th, 2016 4:55 PM

I never understood why some individuals didn't always go with their real gender but, after reading all of your posts.. I understand now. Makes sense lol

I'll go with Boy.

Firox March 11th, 2016 7:08 PM

Most times I always play as the female player, so on my first run that is who I will choose

HyperJono March 13th, 2016 9:55 PM

I will be doing what I normally do and choose the male character as I feel more involved and actually feel like I'm in the game when I pick my own gender. But if I get the other version as well I'll be either gender as my second version of a region is generally for nuzlocke, speed run's or challenges

Harmonie March 14th, 2016 3:07 AM

I always play female, because I like playing as my own gender.

callumchristopher March 14th, 2016 8:06 AM

Hi everyone! I'm Callum and I'm new here!

... I'm also a boy.

NightmareClown April 5th, 2016 1:14 AM

Hhhmmmm....there has been a lot of discussion on the character gender, looks and character overall personality(?). But what really needs answering is if there will be more than one character to choose from for each gender.

So in OM and AS you could choose your hair colour ,girls, at the start. (Not sure about boys tho) but if in Sun and Moon there is different characters altogether to choose from, it's really still a matter of choice... Unless...

Each character has a different rival/friend/whatever then what matters is what path (storyline) looks the most exciting. But in the end these two ideas are pretty far featched and stretch along way from the traditional 'two choices' so it's unlikely that this will happen at all.

But what it really comes down to is your taste in looks, design and Opinion on which one you want.

ShaGaL April 5th, 2016 11:08 AM

Never played as girl, i dont know but it dont fits me :D i couldnt evan have girl pokemon on my silver :D

Outlander April 5th, 2016 1:31 PM

I always buy both versions. I play as a boy in my first run, and then I go back and playthrough as a girl on the other version in honor of my late sister Lauren.

OuterTsuchinoko April 5th, 2016 4:06 PM

I've been playing as the female character since Gen 3 so I'll continue with that tradition. I usually name my character my Reyes (last name) or Matty (nickname by my mom and old gf). I tend not to change things up much. The player character designs are always the thing I look forward to the most with new pokemon games, even more than seeing the starters. I really hope CoroCoro shows their designs in the upcoming issue. Also really hope they go back to the classic trainer style from Gen 1-3. I like the new style for the females at least, but that tough look they all used to have needs to seriously come back.

Patoto April 6th, 2016 9:30 AM

I will probably pick the female as i tend to enjoy their designs more. i am unsure how i will name her though. perhaps Veronica.

Utopian April 6th, 2016 10:51 AM

Hmm I think i'll wait untill the designs are revealed, and then I will most likely pick the one that's better looking.
For the second playthrough i'll pick the other gender.

TheOregle April 6th, 2016 12:23 PM

I personally always play as my own gender, and I like to call the characters 'Oregle' after my online alias, but it does destroy the immersion a bit in certain games when they talk about a legendary trainer that saved the Kanto region from Team Rocket or something. Every protagonist in every region has been called Oregle {XD}

I'm just not creative enough for anything more than that.

AliceBlaze April 6th, 2016 12:42 PM

In every game where you pick your gender, I always pick girl because I like to imagine myself as that character. I always end up liking the female character's design better than the male's anyway.

thunderrose April 6th, 2016 12:50 PM

Hey, you know what would be great? A gender neutral character!...which probably won't happen. At least not in this generation. I'm pretty sure some fangame (I think it may be Solarlight and Lunardark? Maybe?) has an option for that. So why can't the official games? Anyway, I'm rambling. I usually pick the girl because the design is better lol Except in the case of the Johto based games, I always pick Gold :3
In short, I'll probably pick the girl (Man, I just wrote a novel lol)

Swaggachu April 6th, 2016 9:53 PM

I always play as a trigender pyrofox.

Kacchan April 6th, 2016 11:00 PM

I'll probably play as male my first playthrough, and then female on any second playthrough I do, unless the design is awful. If we can build our character, then I might play as female the second time around for sure, just to see their customization options.

8bitn00b April 7th, 2016 12:52 AM

I'm going to play as male in my first playthrough, because I haven't tried yet ;w; (unless the male design is really bad) >_>

Fannie April 7th, 2016 1:59 AM

Female unless this time around the male stands out more. There's better be customisation though -_-

Hikamaru April 7th, 2016 12:25 PM

I know we're all hoping for customization. But even if the female design seems less impressive than the male (likely doubting it since female designs seem to be very diverse) I will still follow my own gender.

AquariusPixie April 8th, 2016 8:26 PM

i normally play as a female because I am. i hope we can customize our players again but more features and stuff to it would be nice

elf rat April 19th, 2016 9:11 PM

girl, because the boys design are since bw mostly generic. I mean, i really like Hilbert, but he look like Red twin, and Nate and Calem look a lot like Hilbert.

I'd like a blond or redhead boy, and with a different hairstyle.

Hikamaru May 10th, 2016 5:56 AM

So now that we've seen the protagonists, will this change your first pick?

The male protagonist reminds me of Calem, who was only just last generation. The hair is very Calem, to the point it's almost him wearing a new outfit. Male protagonists have been very samey for the past couple of games now so it's disappointing to look at.

The female on the other hand, seems like she's wearing green which is a colour we rarely saw in most protagonist outfits (barring Emerald May/Brendan) and I am getting a lot of OR/AS May influences with her shorts and shoes, with her bandanna looking like it's based on both R/S/E May and Dawn's hats together. The bag seems like a recoloured version of Hilda from B/W. Anyways, I wish we could have gotten closer shots of her in the trailer.

JJ Styles May 10th, 2016 6:20 AM

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CiGBgguVIAApGFL.jpg

Well... i wonder.. The Guy looks kind off interesting or not interesting depending on how ya'll look at him. The Girl on the other hand. -w- She looks like a real queen. Oh and I'll safely assume they might be as old as the gen 5 and 6 protags (being teenagers) so that's all well and good.

I might continue my trend of playing the Female avatar again even if there might be more promising customization options for both genders.

Starry Windy May 10th, 2016 6:27 AM

After seeing how male trainer look in the game, I think I've made my mind for now, I'll pick male first since I'm digging into his blue clothing and design, and because that's what I am. However, like in my current tradition which starts in X and Y, I would play as the opposite gender when playing the other version of the game.

Judge Mandolore Shepard May 10th, 2016 6:29 AM

When it comes to choosing between playing as a boy or a girl, I am of course going to choose to play as the boy.

Iceshadow3317 May 10th, 2016 6:34 AM

I really like the female's design. I am almost 100% sure that there will be customization. I will probably play a boy in the main game and then play as the female in the second version I get.

Pinkie-Dawn May 10th, 2016 7:15 AM

[QUOTE=Xin ZhaoYun;9234811 Oh and I'll safely assume they might be as old as the gen 5 and 6 protags (being teenagers) so that's all well and good.[/QUOTE]
Still underaged to be claimed as someone's husbando/waifu.

The new girl definitely pulls short hair better than Serena (yeah, I'm still bitter about that), so I'll have to pick her over the boy, depending if my brother plans to get either two versions.

Inky May 10th, 2016 7:23 AM

I prefer the girl design honestly, so probably her

blue May 10th, 2016 7:32 AM

Slightly disappointed with the female protag, not a fan of the short hair style tbh. The male on the other hand looks much cooler, I'll definitely be choosing the male protagonist in my first run.

Angelroid May 10th, 2016 7:55 AM

I'm playing as the boy.

Hikamaru May 10th, 2016 8:30 AM

Female protagonist's design fits the region so well, and her hair is around close to the length of my own hair. So yeah, still going to be the female as I usually do.

*hopes for adorable as hell fanart*

Sirenita55 May 10th, 2016 8:32 AM

I'll be playing as the girl like always :D

MarinoKadame May 10th, 2016 8:42 AM

I hope we get some more light hair color, hoping they at least added a silver color and not just brown, black, blonde shades.

LilBueno May 10th, 2016 8:53 AM

I've never played as a female trainer before, but I do like her design.
Odd how I'm seeing the consensus in this thread is not liking her design lol maybe it's because I haven't played as a girl before that I like it.
Unless it's an RPG with a unique character (established name, backstory, personality, etc. like FFXIII), it's a little odd for me to play as a female, I guess because I don't identify as one? Though I have role-played as them before (and still do. As a writer, I'm trying to learn different identities to portray them accurately).
The boy is just...too Pokemonish. By that I mean exactly what everyone else has said: he looks completely interchangeable with the last few protagonists.
I'm considering getting both versions (which would be a first for me) and play as one gender for my main version (barrel through for the story) and the other gender for my other version (explore the hell out of Alola).

Esper May 10th, 2016 10:21 AM

What is that girl wearing on her head? Why so many bobble things? I hope we can change that if we get clothing customization. But still, liking the rest of the design and will probably go with her because, again, the boy is too plain looking.

J a s m i n e © May 10th, 2016 10:50 AM

I'll be playing as a girl, of course, in both of the games.

Rhynn May 10th, 2016 11:18 AM

Girl in my first playthrough, but after that it depends on my mood and on how far the trainer customisation goes. If it's like XY I'll be picking a boy on my second playthrough, but if it's limited to the skin colour, it'll depend solely on my mood at the time of starting!

Spinosaurus May 10th, 2016 11:20 AM

Male protagonists continue the tradition of being too plain. Girl is really cute, though. I'm all for her.

Rivvon May 10th, 2016 12:48 PM

I'm sorry but I think these are the most bland, uninspired protagonist designs we've ever gotten. The boy is so boring it's painful. And the girl's .......hat??? looks like a slug. I would be able to forgive her hair for looking like an octopus if her ..........hat?????? didn't look like whatever it is Tierno has on his head.

I mean I'll still pick the female character because I always play as the female. But ................Arceus please let legit customization be back!!

PageEmp May 12th, 2016 7:58 PM

I'm still picking male since I am a male irl lol. But looking at the trailer, I am a bit worried that I wouldn't be getting my wish of getting a decent female protag. ._. It's because in my personal opinion BW1 had the last decent female protag(or at least the last one I liked) It's not that the newer female protags did anything, But as of now, I have my fingers crossed.

Venitardus May 12th, 2016 8:00 PM

It depends on the time of when I get the games.. Since I'll be getting both, I'm probably gunna do one male and the other female.

Elekizer May 12th, 2016 10:32 PM

Well I always choose the same gender just because it says on the manual to choose the same gender as you but then again who reads manuals anyways. {XD}

TheLegendaryGuy May 13th, 2016 12:17 AM

I don't think changing your gender is good;-) and i've been choosing a male character since i played Red, so, i am gonna go with the male one.
