The best job that I'm getting interviewed for will at most make me $25,000 a year. So, no, I'm not part of that afluent greedy capitalist therefore they all must die empire known as the "1%"

Those statistics are interesting. I guess most of my non-grad school millennial friends are doing a lot better than I thought, as I'd guess that most of them are in the top 10%, and a bunch are in the top 1%.

Cost of living also makes a big difference, though. You can have a top 1% income, but if you live in a top 1% cost of living area, your lifestyle may seem worse than if, say, you had a 50th percentile income but lived in a really cheap area.

I have a few high-level banker types in my family, but I have no idea what their financial situation is (and would never dare to ask). They are all very private people, but from what I can tell they do live pretty fabulous lives. They travel wherever/whenever they want, they wear expensive clothes, they have multiple houses in areas with high costs of living, etc. One paid for his daughter's private university education out of pocket.

I find those relatives difficult to relate to and communicate with because they tend to be pretty out of touch with the world outside of their own financially successful bubble. Their solution to every problem is to throw money at it. They don't react well when they can't do that. I still kinda wish they would adopt me though.

No I'm not rich, If I ever come into money I want to be responsible with it. I live in an area where 1 million dollar homes surround me. I'm literally in the middle of these houses stuck in my apartment complex although there is luxury apartments across the street which I'd rather live in. We do have the families in my area who can afford luxury cars and expensive fashion. I'm just glad I have a place to live honestly!

You have a winner. I say this modestly, I am in the 1%.

However, I did not inherit this money, I achieved it on my own. I definitely did not grow up in an affluent town. I was right in the middle of the dirty, dirty. The ghetto. I didn't like my surroundings and admired the people across the Hudson River. Yeah, Wall Street.

I was a weird child. Mon-Fri I would watch news channels and Saturday mornings I would watch my morning cartoons. At the age of 14, I was very interested in the stock market. It was around 2004 that I was able to convince my parents to invest in a few companies. One of them was Amazon. The rest is history.

Moral of the story? Invest in your future! Be smart, take risks, be hungry and always strive for better.

My family's definitely up there when it comes to income, wealthy to the point where I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they were in the top 1%. Due to social circles and all, I know a lot of people who have similar incomes, and it's true that money can really blur perspective. On the other hand, my parents and siblings are some of the most charitable people I know (personality-wise and money-wise), so I guess a lot of it has to do with how you get the money that you have? Like Razor Leaf said, you'll probably find that those who had to work tremendously hard for any sort of wealth would be a lot more grounded that those that have never had to work for anything.

I don't see myself as having that much money though, I'm just a student with an okay salary for my age. When you factor in the amount I spend on food, clothes etc....I'm broke as fuck. I've always seen my family's money as money I can lean on for rainy days, but I like the idea of being self-sufficient.

Not to say they couldn't

There's just probably something more enjoyable if you're paid

That's true, though everyone needs some downtime. I agree this would be an unlikely place, but it's certainly possible.

Top 1% is in the multimillion dollar a year category. While my family is pretty well-off, we're upper middle class if that, and don't come close to the 1% category, I'd honestly be surprised if anyone here does actually.

I mentioned it in this thread already, but it's actually closer to 400k a year. Given the uproar over bankers and capitalists we've had over the past couple of years, I think bar is a lot lower than we'd imagine. The top 0.1% is where you get into multimillion per annum territory. Either way you're likely to be a millionaire because it's hard to spend all that money without investing it somewhere.

Of course 400k a year is still a very large sum of money which over time can accumulate into a lot of wealth. Because families making 50k a year will likely spend all of their money (if not more) on living expenses and a 400k/year family can not only spend more on expenses and even luxuries, but then have even more to put away in savings.
